Nokia MetroHopper Radio innovative base station accessNokia MetroHopper Radio isa wireless access link using the58 GHz frequency for reliabletransmission. Part of the NokiaMetroSite capacity solution, this radio provides access toNokia MetroSite Base Stationsin dense microcellular networks.Compact and unnoticeable,Nokia MetroHopper Radioenables a variety of new sitelocations and can eliminatethe costly delays associated withtraditional cellular transmission.
Nokia MetroHopper Radio enablessame-day base station (BTS) accessusing the 58 GHz frequency band, which does not require coordinatedfrequency planning. Becausethe band is self-regulating, delayscaused by frequency licenceapplications or waiting for leasedlines are completely eliminated. This allows you to more easilysynchronise network rollout andavoid the wasted investment ofbase stations lying idle on-site dueto transmission delays.
In the Nokia MetroSite solution, the indoor unit of Nokia MetroHopperRadio is fully integrated in theNokia MetroSite Base Stationcabinet and the outdoor radio unitincludes a small, flat panel antenna. The radio and BTS are connectedusing a single Nokia Flexbus cable, allowing fast and simple installation.
Truly affordable accessThe integrated, rectangular flatpanel antenna makes the NokiaMetroHopper Radio so hard to spotin the urban environment that itcan be deployed in locationsunreachable for conventionalmicrowave radios. And weighingonly 3 kg, the outdoor unit is quickand easy to install. Together theunobtrusive design and compact sizehelp to cut the cost of networkimplementation by contributing tosimplified site selection, which mayenable mass site acquisition.
Compared to the cost of leased linetransmission, Nokia MetroHopperRadio is simple and cost-effective toinstall and operate, makingmicrocellular network access trulyaffordable.

Reliable access improvesnetwork availabilityBecause this radio uses the 58 GHzfrequency, it takes advantage of thebands unique characteristic of highoxygen absorption. This allows veryhigh reuse of the same frequency,so you can establish hundredsof transmission access points persquare kilometre. And because it isbased on proven microwavetechnology, Nokia MetroHopperRadio offers reliable transmissionaccess, regardless of climate, as wellas high mean time between failureperformance and loop protection. The Automatic Channel Selection
Procedure selects the best channelfor transmission during initial set-upof the radio relay, reducing the needfor on-site configuration.
Access service provided by NokiaMetroHopper Radios also can bedeployed easily from existing NokiaTalk-family Base Station sites with abase station integrated indoor unit. This offers a cost-effective way tomaximise the usage of existing sites.Another option is to use the FIU 19indoor unit which provides generaltelecommunications interfaces andmounts to a standard 19 rack.
