landlord fined €56,000 for 10 unregistered flats

by miChael maCkeyA LANDLORD who was renting out ten properties on the same road, in-cluding eight flats, has been fined €55,750 for not registering them after he repeatedly ignored warning letters, and didn’t show up for court.

The Private Residential Tenancies Board (PRTB) issued proceedings against John Maguire Jnr after he failed to respond to four separate warning letters.

The landlord, of Moneynamuck, Galmoy, Co Kilkenny, had tenancies at 21 and 23 North Circular Road, Dublin 7, as well as flats 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 at 35 North Circular Road which he hadn’t registered.

Convicting him in his absence, District Court judge John O’Neill said Maguire had been given ‘ample notice’ of his obligations and was aware of the consequences of not dealing with the matter.

A PRTB officer told the court the tenancies have still not been registered and that the cost of registering a ten-ancy on time was €90 and the late reg-istration fee was €180 per instance.

Maguire was fined €2,500 plus the same in legal costs for each tenancy, bringing the total in fines and costs to €55,750.

Landlords, if convicted under the Residential Tenancies Act 2004 for failing to comply with a notice, can face a maximum fine of up to €4,000

and/or six months in jail, along with a daily fine of €250 for a con-tinuing offence.

The case will no doubt be a warning to

rogue and ‘accidental’ landlords who are renting properties ‘off the books’, and the PRTB said it would be taking similar prosecutions.

PRTB planning tobring more cases

‘I don’t go to anything. I’m not interested in film premieres or parties, I just like being with my family and old friends,’ she told Red magazine.

‘Unless it’s One Direction... I once took Daisy to sit outside [Harry’s] house after school.

‘We sat there for ages in the car and got really excited when he came out.’

Despite 39-year-old chef Oliver’s hectic schedule opening restaurants and campaigning for healthy school dinners in the UK, Jools is keen to match Brad and Angelina’s king-size family with six kids.

‘Well, it would be amazing to have twins,’ said the 36-year-old, who is mum to Poppy, 12, Daisy Boo, 11, Petal Blossom, five, and four year-old Buddy Bear.

‘I’d like Jamie to work less, but I’m used to it... And to be honest, if I want to know what he’s up to I can just look at his Instagram.’

Concern at rise in sex traffickingEighTy-ThrEE womensupported by an agencyworking with prostitutes last year were trafficked to ireland.

ruhama, which began 25 years ago offering outreach services to street-based sexworkers, said the number ofpeople illegally brought here to work as prostitutes increasedby 17 per cent in 2013.

The charity said it has assisted2,500 women from 60countries since 1989. More than300 were given direct support in the last year.

ruhama said the number ofwomen accessing support in2013 increased by 18 per cent. italso said 219 women were given specific care plans.

Third day of disruption to rail users IRISH RAIL had said it was‘hopeful’ that commuterswould not be hit by anotherevening of rush hourdisruption last night followingtwo successive days ofsignalling issues, but, alas, commuters found themselves delayed around 6pm.

All Dart and rail services were stopped on the Drogheda to Greystones line following thesignal faults, which struck justbefore 6pm. The ten-minute delay was not related to thefault of the previous two evenings, a spokesperson said.

The company yesterday launched a ‘major investigation’ but was unable to fully identify the source of the fault.

Irish ‘living longer due to science’ ThANKS to modern medicine, irish life-expectancy is now above the European average, say health experts.

in the last ten years, theaverage lifespan in ireland has grown by four years. An irish person can now expect to live up to the grand old age of 80.6 years.

in a recent report, the irish Pharmaceutical health Organisation outlined that ‘people in ireland live longer, healthier and more active lives’ than a decade ago.

it showed that more than 70 per cent of the increase can be directly attributed to advances in the field of health science.

city cyclists demand Garda clampdown on bike theftDUBLIN Cycling Campaign is calling for an increase in secure bicycle parking throughout the city after more than 4,500 bikes were stolen in Dublin last year.

While that is the official Central Statistics Office figure, campaigners believe that the actual number is much higher as many go unreported. It is also looking for tighter controls on the online selling of second-hand bikes.

Campaign researcher David Timony

said: ‘We need a multi-pronged approach, a massive increase in secure bicycle parking throughout the city and more action by the Gardaí to detect and deter bicycle theft.

‘A tighter code of practice for buyers and sellers of second-hand bikes online is also needed, as is more responsibility by cyclists in buying better locks, not buying second-hand stolen bikes and always reporting stolen bikes to the Gardaí.’

Dublin Cycling Campaign (DCC) is also calling on the Department of Transport to set up a co-ordinating body to tackle bike theft.

It said that a ‘standard city-type bicycle costs upwards of €700 to replace’ and said that Gardaí are not taking this type of crime seriously.

Mike McMillan, from DCC, added: ‘[Gardaí] are treating it as a trivial offence. It’s not, it is a criminal offence.’ Lockdown: Bicycles

Plan to stop exodus from health insuranceMINISTER for Health Leo Varadkar yesterday announced measures to stem the tide of people ditching their private health insurance.

The Private Health Insurance Package includes a reduction in stamp duty, special lower premiums for young adults, a reduction in the Health Insurance Authority levy and the introduction of the Lifetime Community Rating.

Key recommendations from two reports on private health insurance costs were included, and the package ‘builds on Budget 2015’, a health spokesperson said, which included a freeze on hospital bed charges.

Minister Varadkar said: ‘These measures are designed to work as a package and make private health insurance affordable again for as many people as possible. We want to

try and limit the need for increases in premiums, and even secure some reductions if possible.

‘I think the time is right to try a new approach. The economy is growing again and more people are back at work. Following a long period of rising premiums and a severe decline in health insurance cover, the number of policy holders is now showing modest growth.

Coalition water fight as Labour senators back FFTHE Government played down any threat to the future of the Coalition after an unprecedented split between the ruling parties over the deepening water charges saga.

Fine Gael and Labour voted against each other – for the first time since the Government was formed in March 2011 – in the Seanad on a proposal to hold a right-to-water referendum.

The schism laid bare tensions within the partnership and heaped further confusion on the public about the new utility bills. It also followed attempts by Taoiseach Enda Kenny to dampen a declaration by Tánaiste Joan Burton that the controversial tap tax should cost a family of two parents and two

adult children less than €200 a year.Under fire about her stance, Fine

Gael leader Mr Kenny claimed his Labour counterpart Ms Burton made the remarks in a ‘personal capacity’.

Ms Burton revealed her predicted costs to an average family in the Dáil while being questioned by Socialist TD Joe Higgins. Both her own aides and Government sources attempted to

row back on the comments. Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin

insisted she could not have been speaking in a personal capacity, as she is the deputy leader and was an-swering questions in the Dáil .

Ms Burton yesterday defended her estimate for a water bill for average families. ‘My personal hope is that for some of the family types who were being described yesterday that the cost of the bill including or net of the water support payment will come in around €200 or below,’ she said.

‘And I’m very confident that the Taoiseach and I are very much on the same page on that.’

Asked if she believed the coalition is now under threat from the fall-out, she replied: ‘I don’t believe so.’

The upper house had to be suspended twice during heated outbursts over the Fianna Fáil motion demanding a refer-endum to ensure water is never priva-tised. The proposal was passed by 37 votes to 15 with Labour backing.

Mr Kenny again insisted the Gov-ernment had not made a decision on the price of water charges yet.

The inner Cabinet of Mr Kenny, Ms Burton, Finance Minister Michael Noonan and Public Spending Minister Brendan Howlin are to meet today to debate the imminent charges.

It is expected an announcement will be made within the next two weeks.

Environment Minster Alan Kelly, who will attend today’s talks, de-scribed his party leader Ms Burton’s estimations as a ‘reasonable assess-ment’ of what could be expected.

‘The Taoiseach and I are on the same page’

The potent homebrew is made by inmates from water, sugar, fruit and bread, which is mixed in plastic bottles and hidden in cells until it ferments.

‘You’ll be shot dead, Garda told Bailey’An EnglishmAn suing the state for wrongful arrest over the murder of a French film-maker was told he would be shot dead if he could not be framed, a court has heard.

ian Bailey, 57, a former freelance journalist born in manches-ter, was arrested twice over the killing of sophie Toscan du Plantier outside her holi-day home on a remote west Cork hillside on the morning of December 23 1996.

The killer of the 39-year-old has never been found.

mr Bailey was never pros-ecuted and 20 years later, his lawsuit has begun in the high Court for wrong-ful arrest and mistreatment by gardaí.

senior Counsel Tom Creed claimed an officer made a death threat in the back of a garda car after the first ar-rest in February 1997.

‘he said: “Even if we don’t pin this on you, you are finished in ireland. You will be found dead in a ditch with a bullet in the back of the head,”’ the

lawyer told the court room.mr Bailey, who has lived in west

Cork for 23 years with a home at Prai-rie house, liscaha, schull, was ar-

rested for the second time over the du Plantier killing in January 1998.

The court was told the DPP ordered mr Bailey not be prosecuted after the arrests.

The Four Courts heard that four days after the murder, certain gardaí had decided mr Bailey was ‘the man’ and

set about ‘straight away, zoning in’.The journalist is suing for wrongful

arrest, false imprisonment, assault, battery, trespass of the person, inten-tional infliction of emotional and psy-chological harm, harassment and in-timidation, terrorising and oppressive behaviour and a breach of his consti-tutional rights. The jury of eight men and four women were told the state denies all claims.

isn’t pornography

by cON DOHERTy

By far the daftest thing about this Web Summit is that you have to attend it. and use your legs to get around, and your arse to

sit down, and your hands to clap. This is all very un-internet. Why not a webinar? Or a .com-ference, or a sim-posium?

But no, they went for a conventional convention that’s Davos meets the Electric Picnic. and try how they might to distract us with Bono or Eva Longoria, we all know the real reason they’re coming here: to steal our free water! Or our thunder! Or our ideas! (But mostly our water).

The start-up deals are just a ruse – they’ve sunk a well in the rDS from which they’ll steal the nation’s moisture, and when the land is as parched as a shrivelled prune they’ll hightail it back to the desert in California, leaving us with inflated hotel prices and water debt, and the inescapable sense that ‘the future’ paid us a visit, took a dump in our toilet, had a shower, and buggered off again without buying us dinner.

Still, that’s what you get for hosting your event in what critics

are calling ‘reality’. This does have advantages though – if your internet connection dies during a webinar, the show’s over. Not so at the Web Summit, where you can still hang out on the set of Top Of The Pops and cheer middle-aged men in tight T-shirts who use phrases like ‘the meaning gap’, which is clever, because as soon as you say ‘I don’t know what that means’, well,

that’s a meaning gap right there. aren’t word games fun? Lookout

PlayStation – and facebook, which once tried to sell us on ‘throwing sheep’. Perhaps this inspired the pink sheep grazing in Simmonscourt, though it’s more likely the ‘realised conception of an imagineer-curating-life-hacker’ who wants to ‘crash your neural mainframe’ with positivity.

and it’s the positivity I hate the most. This isn’t america – this is Ireland, where begrudgery tastes of black pudding, so don’t expect me to be happy for some bozos half my age in Clare who sell cheese-craft.yum for a gazillion bucks.

anyway, when not supplying the actual internet, the Web Summit still manages to resemble the internet in that there is far too much happening for you to get any coherent sense of the whole thing. With dozens of speakers quasi-TED-talking across loads of stages, one can ‘surf’

around until your brain develops that same, frazzled, aDD catatonia you get from too much browsing online.

The glaring way the Web Summit does not reflect the internet is that 40 per cent of it isn’t pornography, so to compensate there’s a room full of kittens scrambling their way onto soft couches made out of pure love, which will at least maintain a

credible ‘aww that’s so cute!’ quotient, which

anything web-related cannot but have.

More broadly, however, it won’t have escaped your notice that

between the massively hyped

product launches, and conventions ‘rebooted’ as

‘festivals of ideas’, the tech sector is very ‘hot right now’. They market like the movies, and shortly we’ll have a film about Steve Jobs, which follows on from The Social Network, and to some extent, Moneyball – films in which money management and commercial

success are the defining qualities of the modern hero – and where pathological behaviour in pursuit of business ambitions is not even remotely grounds for moralistic tut-tutting.

But there are dangers. The gizmos at the end of the rainbow will only make us more stupid and useless. Take ‘Tiles’. These exceedingly handy small squares, which attach to keys, for example, guarantee that you’ll forget how to remember, thereby ensuring your brain reverts to an infantile ‘now-eat, now-sleep, now-poop’ state that surely signals doom for the human race.

In the end, technology won’t ‘Skynet’ us into a mountain of skulls, or ‘Matrix’ us into a million batteries, but will in fact mollycoddle us into extinction, until it is we, and not the kittens, who must run the cutesy gauntlet of ribbons, yarn and cuddles until at last we become those gelatinous, barely sentient puddles of flesh with those hover chairs and super-size slurpees from Pixar’s Wall:E.

although hover chairs will be awesome. @kenroganBig ideas: Lily Cole at summit

a PrOPOSaL to expand the skin colour options for emojis may get the thumbs up from those calling for more diversity in the icons.

The cartoon-like pictograms – such as smiley faces or hearts – have become popular in texts and online chats to express users’ emotions. Now Unicode Consortium, the non-profit organisation that sets the standards for the pictograms, is considering

adding up to five new skin colours. The default emoji face was designed

to be generic, but Unicode says users have been clamouring for changes to better reflect global diversity.

The proposal is still under review but could lead to changes for many users as many operating systems are based on Unicode standards.

DAY two of the Web Summit saw more small ironic WiFi glitches, but nobody seemed to care as attendees milled around the RDS in Ballsbridge.

Big-name speakers included now-occasional model Lily Cole, footballer Rio Ferdinand, skateboarding god Tony Hawk and House Of Cards producer Dana Brunetti.

Cole was plugging her online gift-giving platform, impossible.com, where users can trade things with each other, from help with CVs to language lessons.

However, far from being a non-profit or charity, she said she is interested in making it into a sustainable business which will allow it to also do philanthropic work. In the course of her charity

work, Cole also recounted how she had visited Brazil and done a tour of ‘the only wild rubber condom factory in the world’, as part of a project to develop a market for wild rubber grown by forest dwellers as opposed to plantation rubber.

Asked if being a celebrity helped open doors, she said: ‘I always bristle at the word “celebrity”’, adding: ‘The product will only work if it’s a good product, the other stuff will only go so far.’

Thursday the worstday for job accidentsBE on your guard today because Thursday is the most common day to have an accident in work.

Forget Friday the 13th, the Injuries Board – the independent government injuries body – have released their an-nual figures, and most people were hurt on a Thursday during 2013.

According to the report, the total amount awarded to injury victims last year was €24million. Some 826 report-ed workplace accidents occurred – up by 19 from 2012. Payments recorded

by the Board were covered by accident insurance and liable employers.

The highest payout for 2013 was €432,000, which concerned the death of a mechanic. A spokesperson for the claims agency said that the quantity reflected the family’s loss of income.

Meanwhile, the average compensa-tion for men was €29,523, slightly higher than the €27,441 sum typically received by women. For a man living in Dublin, the job risks are more pro-nounced. Men are twice as likely to

fall into harm while at work and the Capital ranks top of the liability pile.

Patricia Byron, Injuries Board chief executive, noted the increase in acci-dent figures coincided with decreas-ing unemployment levels.

‘As the economy starts to grow again, and as businesses around the country begin to expand, it is impor-tant that a renewed focus on health and safety is cultivated,’ she said.

‘The onus is on us all – business owners, sole traders, and employees – to promote and adhere to the high-est levels of health and safety.’

She warned those commuting long distances and workers who drive for a living to ‘heed the advice of agencies such as the Road Safety Authority’.

The construction industry, a spokes-person added, was a particularly risky business. However, farming is largely absent from the report as, in the main, farmers are self-employed.

Slips, trips and falls were the most frequent accidents, accounting for more than 30 per cent of all awards.

Unsurprisingly, Sunday was the saf-est day of the week.

The €50m bouquet... well, it is a van GoghA MASTERPIECE painted by Vincent van Gogh weeks before his death has sold for €50million.

The 1890 painting, Still Life: Vase With Daisies And Poppies, was one of the few the Dutch artist sold during his lifetime.

Expected to fetch between €23million and €38million, it was sold to a private bidder from Asia, Sotheby’s in New York reported.

Van Gogh painted the wildflowers at the French home of his physician, Dr Paul Gachet. The high price, however, is a long way short of the record fee paid for a van Gogh at auction. That stands at €66million for his Portrait Of Dr Gachet, which was sold in 1990.

The still life was acquired by one of the founders of the Museum of Modern Art, Conger Goodyear, in

1928. It remained in his family until 1990, when it was sold to its last owner.

The painting was not the only item at Tuesday’s auction in Manhattan to excite art collectors.

A buyer paid €80.7million for Chariot, a 1951 bronze sculpture of a goddess-like figure perched atop a wheeled chariot, by Swiss sculptor Alberto Giacometti.

Crimbo cutbacks on cards THE average household will spend up to €1,463 this Christmas – but this is no more than last year according to research carried out by Aviva Home Insurance.

The findings show that, despite the economic recovery, many of those surveyed said they intended to cut down on what they spend this year.

One in five people surveyed said they intended to spend less on

presents while 27 per cent said they would cut back on the cost of house decorations. Only 18 per cent of those surveyed said they would cut down on food and drink.

Households around the country will have gifts to the value of between €350 and €500 under their Christmas trees this festive season and the average household spend on gifts is around €620, the research found.

CHARLIE HUNNAM says his beefed-up muscles aren’t just for Sons Of An-archy fans but to keep his mental health in check.

The British actor, 34, who passed on 50 Shades Of Grey, grapples with de-pression.

‘I get more out of fitness mentally than I do physically. It’s like an oil change,’ he explained. ‘Your body is mostly water and it gets dirty.

‘You have to clear the dirty wa-ter otherwise it’ll corrupt every-

‘If I get injured or I don’t have time, I’ll start to feel cloudy, then depressed.’

Banker ‘posed for selfie with corpse of oneof his victims’

by sHAROn MARRisA BRITISH banker accused of murder-ing two sex workers in Hong Kong posed for a grisly selfie with one of the bodies, it has been claimed.

The photo of Rurik Jutting is said to be among 2,000 found on his phone following his arrest on Sunday.

It reportedly shows the 29-year-old with Sumarti Ningsih, 25, whose decomposing body was later found almost decapitated and stuffed into a suitcase on Jutting’s apartment balcony.

Police also found Indonesian-born Jesse Lorena Ruri, 32, dying with her throat slashed and buttocks stabbed.

It was later revealed that one of Jutting’s trading licences was revoked on October 28 – the day it is alleged he

killed his first victim. Investigators are now looking at whether he attacked the women after losing his permit.

He has yet to enter a plea to the two murder charges he faces. But a source told the Daily Mail he was ‘frank and honest’ the women died in his flat, add-ing: ‘But he is adamant he is not mad.’

Fellow drinkers in Hong Kong’s Wan Chai district said Jutting could be ‘aggressive and confrontational’.

One, an ex-British policeman, said he regularly saw the Cambridge graduate ‘in a very bad state’, adding: ‘I have absolutely no doubt his zombie-like appearance was a result of drug abuse.’

Vatican: Assisted suicide ‘reprehensible’THe Vatican’s bioethics chief has called the assisted suicide of an American woman with terminal brain cancer ‘reprehensible’.

Brittany Maynard’s death in Oregon on Saturday, following a public declaration of her motives aimed at sparking political action on the issue, has sparked fierce debate over assisted suicide for the terminally ill.

Ms Maynard, 29, stated she wanted to die with dignity, but Monsignor Ignacio Carrasco de Paula, head of the Pontifical Academy for Life, told ANSA news agency that ‘dignity is something other than putting an end to one’s own life. Brittany Maynard’s act is in itself reprehen-sible, but what happened in the consciousness we do not know’.

He warned that he was not judging individuals ‘but the gesture in and of itself should be condemned’.

Rev Dr Ignacio Castuera, a board member of Oregon-based advocacy group Compassion & Choices, said Ms Maynard was not Catholic and it would be wrong to impose a set of religious beliefs on people who did not share them.

Israel said the number of militants killed was much higher and accused Hamas of using civilians as human shields.

On the Israeli side, 66 soldiers and six civilians were killed.

Amnesty said in a report that ‘Israeli forces killed scores of Palestinian civilians in attacks targeting houses full of families, which in some cases

have amounted to war crimes’.Israel’s foreign ministry

rejected the report’s findings, saying the London-based rights group ‘ignores documented war crimes perpetrated by Hamas’.

the ministry added: ‘the report does not mention the word terror in relation to Hamas, nor mentions tunnels built by Hamas to infiltrate Israel.’

Obama handed a mid-term beating

Republicans make huge gains as party swoops to take control of the US Senate

Emotional: Republican Mia Love celebrates winning in Utah PictURe: AP

Victory: Kansas governor, Republican Sam Brownback, is re-elected PictURe: AP

REPUBLICANS have seized control of the US Senate and put increased pressure on Barack Obama in the final two years of his presidency.

They also tightened their grip on the House of Representatives as yesterday’s mid-term elections saw a thumping defeat for the Democrats.

New Jersey Republican governor Chris Christie said after his party’s victory: ‘This result is a reflection of the president’s lack of leadership both here and abroad.’

The result means the Republicans now control both chambers of Congress for the first time since 2006 – giving them momentum heading into the presidential elections in 2016.

Nearly two thirds of voters inter-viewed after the elections said the US was on the wrong track. According to exit polls for TV networks, more than four in ten voters disapproved of both Mr Obama and Congress.

Republicans had made Mr Obama’s

presidency the core issue of their campaigns, even though he wasn’t on the ballot.

They tapped into a well of despond-ency at a time when many Americans are upset with a sluggish economic recovery and troubled by the spread

of ebola and the rise of Islamic State militants in Iraq and Syria.

House Speaker and Republican John Boehner said: ‘We are humbled by the responsibility the American people have placed with us but this is not a time for celebration.’

Legal pot in DC and Oregon

MARIJUANA was yesterday legalised in Washington DC and Oregon with Alaska set to follow suit.

Smoking pot in public is still banned but possession of a small amount of the drug for recreational use is now lawful. The

only major loss for drug law reformers in state ballots came in Florida where they narrowly failed to get marijuana legalised for medical purposes.

Legalisation opponent Kevin Sabet called the votes ‘a bit of a wake-up call’.

Women’s clothes help send profits up to €340million

A RANGE of fashionable clothes for women helped Marks & Spencer defy expectations by announcing a rise in profits yesterday.

The clothing range was cited by chief executive Marc Bolland as one of the reasons half-year earnings were up 2.3 per cent to €340million.

‘Womenswear performance continues to improve with growth in full-price sales and increasingly positive feedback from our customers,’ he said.

‘However, the recent market conditions remain challenging, with unseasonal weather resulting in high levels of promo-tional activity across the market.’

The British-based retailer is still fighting to turnaround clothing sales overall after the division has seen more than three years of decline. Across the group, sales rose by 1 per cent to €6.2billion in the six months to September 27.

Food was in line with the rise but warm weather in September contributed to a 4 per cent fall in general merchandise.

M&S, which has been overtaken by rival Next in the UK, is hoping profits will

total €845million this year, up from €798million in the pre-vious 12 months.

Shares were up 10 per cent after the update.Neil Saunders, of retail con-

sultancy Conlumino, said: ‘Overall, M&S’s school report

for this term reads “showing signs of improvement”.’

Irish among big polluters

Drug ‘grows eyelashes’EyE ExpERTS have discovered a drug used to treat glaucoma can also boost the growth and prominence of eyelashes.

In a year-long trial, researchers at Southampton General Hospital and Saint Louis University in the US analysed the effects of a daily application of bimatoprost to the upper eyelid of patients with poor eyelash growth, known as idiopathic hypotrichosis, or eyelash loss, as a result of recent chemotherapy.

Conventionally, under the brand name Lumigan, the drug has been used in eye-drop form to decrease the amount of fluid in the eye and reduce eye pressure, treating both glaucoma and ocular hypertension.

The study, published online by the British Journal of Dermatology, offers the first long-term investigation of the drug’s safety and effectiveness as a treatment for lengthening, thickening and darkening eyelashes using direct application to the eyelid.

parwez Hossain, a consultant ophthalmologist at Southampton General, said: ‘This study shows bimatoprost is a safe and effective treatment for eyelash growth over a sustained period of time for anyone affected by poor eyelash length, thickness and darkness. It also offers a viable, rapid treatment option for patients who have suffered eyelash loss as a result of chemotherapy.’

IRELAND is among the highest carbon emitters in the world, a new report has revealed.

In an environmental impact study conducted by Trócaire, Ireland is ranked as the 35th highest producer of the pollutant. On a European emissions scale, we are in eighth place.

In fact, according to the charity, our emissions are currently so high that our island – with a population of more than 4.5million – emits as much carbon as more than 400million of the world’s poorest people.

Hay fever misery on wayHAy FEvER sufferers could reach new heights of misery over the next century as pollen levels soar, new research suggests.

Scientists predict that higher levels of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere will lead to a significant boost in the amount of air-borne grass pollen.

Despite increases in ozone, which suppresses plant growth, pollen production is expected to more than treble in the next 100 years.

US lead scientist Dr Christine Rogers, from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, said: ‘The implications of increasing CO2 for human health are clear. Stimulation of grass pollen production by

elevated CO2 will increase airborne concentrations and increase exposure and suffering in grass pollen-allergic individuals.”

For the study, grass plants grown in special reactor chambers were exposed to different atmospheric gas concentrations.

Different ratios of carbon dioxide and ozone were tested to show their effects on grass and pollen production.

The scientists found that an atmospheric CO2 concentrations of 800 parts per million – possible by the end of the century according to some forecasts – raised pollen production per grass flower by 53 per cent.

IgnORAnT PEOPLE DOn’T

EVEn USE MY nEW nAMEX FACTOR judge Cheryl Fernandez-Versini has branded people ‘ignorant’ for not using her new married name.

She changed her surname from Cole when she wed Jean Bernard in a secret ceremony in the summer and said getting use to her new name

‘has come quite naturally’. The singer, 31, added: ‘People are so ignorant about it, they just start calling us Cheryl but I’ll take that.’

Her X Factor boss Simon Cowell had joked Cheryl married a man with a long surname so she could be a

one-name pop star. But she responded: ‘So I could be like Madonna? See how his brain works. I mean, who even thinks like that?’

The star also told Marie Claire magazine she is not ready for babies but added: ‘You can never say never.’

Swift’s Spotify snub makes her a record breakerby AnDREI HARMSWORTH

TAYLOR SWIFT’S ploy to boost sales of her new album has proved a soar-away success – after she sold nearly 1.3million copies in one week.

The singer’s latest offering, entitled 1989, is the fastest-selling album in the US for 12 years – thanks to Swift removing her body of work from the music-sharing service Spotify.

The purge included new hit Shake It Off which meant fans had to buy her album to hear the single – and they did – sending 1989 to No.1 in the charts.

Sales tracking service Nielsen SoundScan said 1989 earned the largest weekly album sales since Eminem’s The Eminem Show sold 1.322million copies in 2002.

Having sold 1.287mil-lion copies of 1989 last

Dear Metro Herald, I would like to vent my anger at the ridiculous change in temperature over the last number of

days. I was quite happy with the unseasonably warm weather and now I am not pleased at all with this latest cold spell.

I blame the Government – it has to be their fault. everything else is. Who is the Minister for Weather? What is the Government going to do about it? Grinding My Gears

To all who didn’t bother march-ing against the water charges over the last few months, to all who said ‘we’re going to have to pay it in the end anyway’ and to all who were going to take this water tax lying down (as we Irish tend to do), I say this: No need to thank me and my

in the know, on the go

Presenter and naturalist chris Packham, 53, talks about

Winterwatch, frisky badgers, collecting chairs and why he can’t hear

birdsong anymore

Itchy and Scratchy are right at the centre of my life and sleep on my bed – I wake up to a pile of man and dog every

day. It’s brilliant

Who will be the stars of the BBC’s Winterwatch? I suspect it will be the badger family we’re following in Brighton – we’ve discovered that 50 per cent of the offspring in a badger group are not from the dominant male as you’d expect, but from ‘sneaky shaggers’ – males that secretly have sex with the females when the top male isn’t around. But it’s all about reproductive success, trying to ensure your genes are passed on.

So animals never have sex for pleasure? My view has always been a firm ‘no’, as there has to be an evolutionary purpose to any animal behaviour. However, there are some good scientific arguments coming out of ape and dolphin studies to suggest otherwise.

Springwatch and Autumnwatch are hugely popular – could you cover the rest of the year? Well, we’ve added Winterwatch for the past couple of years and now plan to add easterwatch and Summerwatch as one-episode shows between the longer series. Having an annual presence will mean we can address unanswered questions about what happens to the animals that viewers have been following. It’ll be a bit like a soap.

You had a snake as a kid. Is that a good pet for a child? Snakes are ideal because they’re clean and don’t produce heaps of stinky mess – unlike rabbits and hamsters. My parents had a very simple rule that if I had an animal I was entirely responsible for it, so if it suffered or died it was my fault. But parents must choose pets children are capable of looking after, and they need to be tactile and hands-on – don’t get a kid a parrot for goodness sake.

These days you have two poodles. That’s not quite as macho as a snake… I wouldn’t have any other breed. Itchy and Scratchy are right at

the centre of my life and sleep on my bed – I wake up to a pile of man and dog every day. It’s brilliant. Poodles are quite anarchic but they learn commands quickly.

Are you geeky about anything other than animals? I’m a big collector and enjoy ordering and reordering things. I still have animal skulls from when I was eight. I now collect modern chairs, which upsets my partner and stepdaughter, Meg, as they’re not allowed to sit on them.

You’re looking good for 53. Any anti-ageing tips? Not really! I drank heavily for a long

time, now I don’t drink at all – but I’m not sure it’s

made a difference. I never use soap on my face, but always moisturise after my shave. Maybe that’s it.

You do suffer from hearing

problems these days. Is that

anything to do with ageing? I suffer from hearing loss in one ear because of a condition called Ménière’s disease, which I developed at 37, possibly as a result of bursting an eardrum diving. The most severe symptoms – extreme vertigo and nausea – have thankfully passed, but the affected

ear has lost its ability to hear high-frequency sounds. For me the most upsetting thing is that I can’t hear birdsong properly any more when I’m

birdwatching.

Is that why you got involved with the Sound Seekers charity? Yes, it has given me an affinity with anyone suffering from deafness. I was keen to get involved

with its Hear In Malawi project especially, which

is raising funds to treat hearing there.

Are there animals you dislike? Only one, and you can probably guess – humans. actually most of them are OK, but it’s just we play outside the rules and have been doing it for too long. We put ourselves above everything else, which is a mistake. caroline Jones

STRIPESAll ripe for

The sartorial staple in any woman’s wardrobe has to be stripes. Until now, this meant Breton jumpers, T-shirts and the occasional dress, but this season calls for a whole new

way to wear them.Gone are the classic navy and white nauti-

cal styles, and in their place comes a far more directional, modern offering. Marni and Isa-bel Marant lead the way on the AW14 cat-walks, leading to plenty of affordable options coming to the high street. Think tailored pin-stripe coats, updated as the new off-duty hero. Or knitwear, which also plays a starring role, coming in a new wave of bold clashing colours. And if that’s all a bit too much, why not tap into this linear trend and amp up your look with some stylish accessories? A faux fur clutch (try ASOS’ version) or stole (Shrimps), perhaps.

It’s also time to rethink the way we wear them. Silk shirts will update your workwear in an instant (elizabeth And James is a great choice), or try teaming a horizontal stripe knit with a vertical-style pencil skirt for extra cool points.

Or why not keep it classic and go for Sea-salt’s chic chunky knit? After all, there’s always room for another stripe in our ward-robes, so give your current wares a much-needed pick-me-up for autumn and invest in a new-season style.

Fur Coats

Decades of real fur abstinence paved the way in recent years for a resurgence in its

popularity. Vintage fur coats,

previously confined to the recesses of our grandmothers’ closets, were suddenly being dusted off as a younger generation realised just how warm fur is. Last year saw a decline in its popularity; was it a just a milder winter, was there still an ethical dilema, or was it simply a trend issue?

This season big fashion names – armani, Hermés, elie saab, chloe, Fendi, saint Laurent... the list goes on – gave us a controversial-free way to wear fur – by making it faux. From short pile bomber jackets at Marc Jacobs to multi-coloured shearling at Marni it is faux all the way for a/W14.

What’s more, this season’s faux fur comes in fantastical colours you’ll never see in nature; from pastel shades and silver to bold primary multi-colours. Just browse the boutiques and you’ll find not just coats but clutches, collars, shoe detailing and hood linings too.

If you can’t (or won’t) spend thousands on a full-length navy blue faux fur coat from Bottega Veneta or a pastel pink cropped jacket from elie saab then simply take inspiration and choose one of these high street offerings. This patchwork coat from asOs (pictured €142)

is a complete faux fur statement, while M&s have gone for rich red (pictured €210) as part of their autograph range. Topshop haveembraced silver short pile with this zip-through skirt (pictured €55) and black for this roll top clutch (pictured €42). If you prefer to make a more subtle trend statement, the easiest way to embrace faux fur is by wearing a collar or tippet; the Monsoon Olivia

stole (pictured €45) comes in the chicest shade of pastel pink. Keeping warm and looking chic has never been so easy or controversy-free.whisty.wordpress.com

This new show is pretty standard fare until the finale, when DMC walks through a wall.

Oh bOy, it’s a girl thing

For a chap who pretty much invented lad-lit in the 1990s, Nick Hornby has recently spent a lot of time writing about women.

‘There was the film an Education, then there are forthcoming films Wild, based on Cheryl Strayed’s memoir, and Brooklyn, an adaptation of Colm Tóibín’s novel about a Wexford girl in 1950s New York,’ he says, counting them off. ‘Then there’s my new novel, Funny Girl, about a TV actress in the 1960s.’ He stops, a bit sheepish. ‘Because my first book was about football, some people think I’ve become a bit of a weirdo.’

Thanks to the mass-market popularity of Fever Pitch, High Fidelity and about a Boy, for a while the name Nick Hornby was synonymous with a particular type of bloke. at the height of the boozed-up, football-mad, emotionally arrested 1990s, chaps who balked at the challenge of committing to a woman for more than four weeks found easy refuge in a new social trope: the blithely unattached new lad whose most meaningful relationship was with his record collection. It’s hard to

know whether Hornby created new laddism or new laddism created him. Either way, Hornby has always felt uncomfortable with the lad-lit label.

‘I can see now that Fever Pitch and High Fidelity were the sort of books that could sink you, because they were both a case of the book and the world matching up at the right moment,’ he says, sucking furiously on an

e-cigarette. ‘But the books became much more than they were ever intended to represent. I found myself a spokesman for something I never signed up to’

Fast forward a decade or two and new lad has become metrosexual dad; and Hornby has become a sensitive chronicler of

the lives of young women.‘Women’s lives are so much

more moving: they nearly always have some sort of obstacle to overcome,’ he says. ‘Whereas for men, usually the only obstacle they have to overcome is themselves.’

Funny Girl isn’t just the story of a working-class actress from Blackpool, it’s a love letter to the TV cultural explosion of the

1960s and to some of Hornby’s favourite writers: ray Galton and alan Simpson of Hancock’s Half Hour and Steptoe & Son fame, and The Likely Lads’ Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais. ‘Galton and Simpson had as much influence on me as any novelist,’ he says, pointing to a childhood filled with the new Saturday teatime pleasure of watching TV. ‘These writers weren’t oxbridge educated but they were very bright. and they were passionately committed to the idea of popular entertainment.’

as is Hornby. He regularly takes issue with the elitist pretensions of highbrow culture. His books are deliberately middle of the road: there to be enjoyed by everyone and he is a passionate advocate of the joys of reading. ‘Noel Gallagher said he didn’t see the point of reading because novels are made up,’ he says. ‘That sort of comment drives me a bit nuts.’

Funny Girl is also Hornby’s sunniest novel. He puts his contented disposition down to years of therapy. He is not ashamed to say he has suffered depression, or to admit periods of his life have been difficult. ‘Part of it was because when you are younger you assume every rejection is definitive,’ he says. ‘But it was also partly because of my eldest son [who has severe autism]. Dealing with that has been a hard, long road for us all.’

Today his career is flourishing and family life is easier. ‘I am much happier in my work,’ he says. ‘I have a much better sense of security in who I am and what I do.’

From new lad to metrosexual dad, Nick Hornby has got in touch with his feminine side, writes Claire Allfree

From book to film…

Harrington among Jackson contendersgOLf Padraig Harrington will continue his bid to stop his slide down the world rankings in the Sanderson Farms Championship in Mississippi this week. While 40 of the world’s top 50 players are contesting the WGC-HSBC Champions event in Shanghai, world number 340 Harrington is one of nine former major champions in the field at Jackson Country Club. Harrington, who reached a career-high third in the world six months after winning his third major title in the 2008 US PGA Championship, will partner fellow major winners Lucas Glover and David Toms in the opening two rounds of the $4million (€3.2million) event.

F1 title memories give Hamilton liftfORMuLA1 Lewis Hamilton can still recall with clarity the day he ‘lost’ and won his only Formula One world title. It was six years ago Hamilton was crowned world champion in Brazil. With title rival Felipe Massa in his Ferrari crossing the line 40 seconds up the road, many people in Ferrari assumed they had won. At that stage, Hamilton was running in sixth position, but required fifth or better to snatch the title away from Massa. On the last corner he passed Toyota’s Timo Glock to claim victory. Ahead of his return, he said: ‘Brazil is a very, very special place for me.’

Robshaw issues All Black rallying cryRugby Chris Robshaw will send England into battle against New Zealand with the warning there is ‘no hiding place’ if they are to overcome the world champions. England are hoping to end a sequence of four successive defeats to the All Blacks at Twickenham on Saturday, in the process serving notice they are credible challengers for the Webb Ellis Cup next year. Robshaw was at the helm in 2012 when Richie McCaw’s New Zealand were crushed 38-21 and outlined what it would take to repeat the feat. ‘There’s no hiding place. We’re not going into this game to come out second best,’ Robshaw said.

Ball’s cricket pastRugby It is not stretching the boundaries of sporting fantasy to suggest that Wales lock Jake Ball might have played cricket for Australia. But Australia’s loss is Wales’ gain, and Ball will run out against the Wallabies on Saturday for a rugby union Test match that he admits ‘means a lot to me’. During a previous sporting life, the bearded Scarlets forward struck fear into opposition batsmen on the cricket fields of Western Australia.

South AfricA coach heyneke Meyer has remained loyal to the players who beat New Zealand last month by naming an unchanged lineup for the opening match of their northern hemisphere tour against ireland on Saturday.

the only change to the matchday squad is at replacement prop, where coenie oosthuizen comes in for injured Marcel van der Merwe.

‘it’s only the fifth time in what will be the 34th test since i was appointed as Springbok coach that we’ve been able to select an un-changed starting lineup,’ Meyer said in a press release from SAru yesterday.

‘in this day and age, not making changes to teams is pretty much unheard of, but this is a great position we’re in. however, we need to make it count against a very tough irish side on Saturday.

‘Although we won our last test, the challenge this week is to make another step up. it’s im-

perative that we improve in all facets of our play.’

Meyer said he had thought of giving un-capped Lions prop Julian redelinghuys a spot on the bench in the place of Van der Merwe, but opted for the greater experience of oost-huizen.

‘Although Julian redelinghuys was also con-sidered, he’s still new in the team and not fa-miliar with our patterns of play and especially the line-out calls, while coenie knows the way we play well,’ said Meyer.

‘coenie is also in great shape and we know what he can do, especially if he has to make an impact off the bench. it’s good to have him back.’

the selection of 20-year-old rookie flyhalf handre Pollard over the more precise boot of Morne Steyn suggests the Boks will look to run the ball more, as they did in defeating the All Blacks 27-25 in their last test on oct. 4.

After ireland, South Africa have tour match-es against England (Nov 15), italy (Nov 22) and Wales (Nov 29).

‘Nothing will Savea come Saturday,’ carter hints...‘Huge threat’: All Blacks winger Julian Savea

New ZealaNd fly-half dan Carter has warned england that prolific wing Julian Savea is in ‘red hot’ form.

Savea has plundered 29 tries in 30 outings for the all Blacks, but it is against the Red Rose he has been most lethal, touching down eight times in four games.

The 24-year-old has been described as better than Jonah lomu by all Blacks head coach Steve Hansen and will be the world champions’ main strike weapon in Saturday’s QBe Series opener at Twickenham.

‘Julian has really grown. He’s such a huge threat and a great player to have on your side,’ Carter told Sky Sports News.

‘He’s strong, he’s powerful, he’s fast, he can break tackles and he loves scoring tries.

‘He has a great strike rate against england and every time he pulls on the all Blacks jersey. He’s in pretty red hot form and

is a great player to play alongside.’

Savea will collide with Semesa Rokoduguni, the

serving British army soldier who is set to make his debut.‘every player who pulls on the

england jersey performs out of their skin, even more so in the early stages of their career,’ Carter said. ‘For Rokoduguni to come into an environment like this... he’s got nothing to lose

and will make the most of the opportunity.’

Carter won his 101st cap in Saturday’s 74-6 thrashing of the United States, but Hansen hinted afterwards he is unlikely to start against england.

The last 12 months have seen the 32-year-old complete a six-month sabbatical and rehabilitate a broken leg and troublesome calf. However, his seven starts at Twickenham have left him with a clear understanding of the occasion.

‘The all Blacks love playing there and it’s never an easy match. It’s going to be a huge occasion and we’ll be up against a strong england side,’ he said.

EVERTON should enjoy a straight-forward victory when theyentertain Lille in tonight’s EuropaLeague action at Goodison Park.

The French strugglers have wononly one of their last ten matches, scoring just five times in that run.

The Toffees, on the other hand, have worked hard to correct thedefensive woes which hinderedthem at the start of the season astheir rearguard has been breachedjust once in their four last outings.

Everton will be good enough to

win this at 5/6 with William Hill, Betfred and Sky Bet, while RomeluLukaku (pictured) is 4/1 withLadbrokes, Hills and plenty more firms to score first.

Tottenham have suddenly wonthree out of their last four gamesand should improve that tally at Asteras Tripolis this evening.

City see red as Euro campaign falls apart

rapid reply: Toure fires in to level for city but his night ended in defeat and with a late sending-off

football champions league

NINE-man Manchester City were left in disarray as they were sunk by an ill-disciplined display and two goals from CSKA Moscow star Seydou Doumbia.

Fernandinho and Yaya Toure were both dismissed in a shambolic second half as the Premier League champions slipped to a defeat which leaves them at the bottom of their group.

Doumbia struck twice in the first half, taking advantage of appalling lapses from City’s back four.

The Ivory Coast striker was left un-marked to open the scoring, head-ing in a free-kick from seven yards when Toure failed to track his run.

That was in just the sec-ond minute of the game and set the tone for the night for the hosts.

The Etihad Stadium was plunged into silence as the Russian club’s fans are banned by Uefa from travelling as punishment for racist behaviour.

The lead lasted just six minutes as Toure curled a beautiful 25-yard free-

kick inside the near post after Stevan Jovetic was fouled.

But City did not learn their from their earlier errors and Doumbia scored his

second in the 34th minute, firing a low shot past Joe Hart after

horrific defending from Gael Clichy.

CSKA’s defence held strong and goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev denied both James Milner and

substitute Edin Dzeko. City then lost their heads

when half-time substitute Fernandinho was sent off for

two bookings in eight minutes before Toure was dismissed for needlessly shoving Roman Eremenko in the head.

Gala fans arrestedGERMAN police have arrested 21 Galatasaray fans and opened an attempted manslaughter probe after firecrackers, smoke bombs and flares were thrown at Borussia Dortmund supporters on Tuesday. The Champions League match, won 4-1 by Dortmund, was interrupted twice and police, who reported no injuries, prevented a clash between rival fans after the game.

Ollie’s counting to five in referee rantIAN HOLLOWAY insists video technology must be introduced after this week’s refereeing controversies. The boss of Millwall (pictured), sent to the stands on Tuesday after a bust-up with Blackburn manager Gary Bowyer, was angered by referee Darren Deadman’s performance in the 2-2 draw. ‘We are sick of mistakes,’ he said. ‘It’s human error, the eyes aren’t quicker than the ball. Get the fourth official in the stand and the decisions right with a camera. What’s happening at the moment cannot be right. It’d take five seconds, that’s all.’

FA tells Rio to show remorse for tweetRIO FERDINAND has been told he ‘should have known better’ than to become involved in a Twitter row which led to a three-match ban. The 35-year-old QPR defender was also handed a €32,000 fine by the Football Association for using the term ‘sket’, slang for a promiscuous girl or woman, in reply to a tweet suggesting Ferdinand’s team needed a new centre-half. A statement by the FA’s independent regulatory commission read: ‘With nearly 6million followers, Mr Ferdinand is clearly an experienced Twitter user and he should know better than to respond in the way that he did. Unfortunately there is no formal or direct admission and certainly no sign of remorse.’ Ferdinand has until Monday to appeal.

Fined: Ferdinand

60 Minutes injury-plagued West Ham striker Andy Carroll managed to get through in a behind-closed-doors match against Southend yesterday – he could be in contention for Saturday’s Premier League visit of Aston Villa to Upton Park

Outburst: Warnock

Warnock pays price for outburstCrystal Palace manager Neil Warnock has been fined €10,000 by the Football association for post-match comments about referee Craig Pawson after the 2-1 Premier league home defeat by Chelsea on October 18.

the Eagles boss, 65, had said Pawson was ‘influenced’ by

complaining Blues players as he sent off Palace defender Damien Delaney for a second yellow card.

Warnock denied the charge and had requested a personal hearing, held yesterday.

an Fa statement read: ‘Following an independent regulatory commission hearing,

Warnock has been find £9,000 for misconduct in relation to post-match media comments.

‘Warnock was charged following media comments he made after the game which the Fa alleged implied the referee was motivated by bias and/or brought the game into disrepute.’

Chelsea climb out of Hazard-ous position

EDEN HAZARD missed a late penalty as Chelsea’s trip to Slove-nia proved anything but straight-forward for Jose Mourinho.

Although Nemanja Matic’s second-half goal spared his side’s blushes, the Blues manager’s face looked like thunder for much of the night, despite a sporting hug for Maribor coach Ante Simundza at the end.

Thrashed 6-0 at Stamford Bridge just a fortnight ago, Maribor posed an attacking threat all night and

took a stunning 50th-minute lead when Agim Ibraimi curled home from the edge of the box.

After Diego Costa had squan-dered the kind of opening he was

gobbling up earlier in the season, the hosts should have made it 2-0 when Mitja Viler crossed from the left but teenage striker Luka Zahovic blazed over an open goal.

Chelsea then began to turn the screw and Matic’s 75th-minute equaliser was the reward for a sus-tained spell of increasing pressure, poking home

after John Terry had headed down a corner.

As they went in search of a winner, Hazard’s shot was saved by Jasmin Handanovic after he was brilliantly fed in by Oscar, the keeper made a flying save as Cos-ta’s shot looked destined for the top corner and the striker had a goal ruled out for offside.

Hazard should have won it for Chelsea from the spot five minutes from time after he danced into the box and was brought down.

However, his penalty was hopelessly tame and the heroic Handanovic made an easy save.

NOT THE bEsT NEws fOR JOE scHMiDT...RoRy Best has been ruled out of Ireland’s autumn Test opener against South Africa in Dublin on Saturday.

The Ulster hooker, who has won 77 caps, is sidelined due to a calf muscle strain.

Leinster forward Sean Cronin is now likely to start against the Springboks after 32-year-old Best became Ireland’s latest front-row injury casualty following props Cian Healy, Marty Moore and Nathan White.

Tighthead prop Mike Ross, meanwhile, is battling to be fit after a month out with groin trouble, although he returned to training on Tuesday.

‘Following a medical review yesterday evening, Rory has been ruled out of

selection for the game against South Africa,’ the Irish Rugby Football Union said in a statement.

‘His calf strain has been slower to heal than expected.

‘He is partaking in modified training, but a decision has been

made not to risk him this weekend, and his progress will continue to be monitored.’

Ireland head coach Joe Schmidt is due to announce his starting line-up for the

JoHN ToSHACK says failing to win last season’s Premier League left a ‘dark cloud’ over Liverpool.

that championship. I think there’s a dark cloud still hanging over Anfield.’

Boss Brendan Rodgers (pictured) was criticised for making seven changes for Tuesday’s 1-0 defeat to Real Madrid and Toshack, who managed the Spanish giants twice, said: ‘It looked a bit of a dam-age limitation job.’

CHELSEA were held to a 1-1 draw by a battling Maribor side after Eden Hazard saw a late penalty saved, but Man-chester City suffered an even more embarrassing fate.

Jose Mourinho’s men found themselves 1-0 down to a 50th-minute Agim Ibraimi strike before Nemanja Matic equal-ised with 17 minutes left in a thrilling clash in Slovenia.

And, despite Hazard’s profli-gacy from the spot, the Lon-doners remain on top of Group G and on course to qualify.

Nine-man City, though, have a mountain to climb to emerge from Group E after they slumped to a 2-1 loss at home to CSKA Moscow.

Fernandinho and goalscorer yaya Toure were both sent off to complete a miserable night for City and a dismal two days of European action for English clubs in general following Ar-senal and Liverpool’s poor results on Tuesday.
