THE NUMBER of people out of work is to fall below one in ten for the first time in years, the Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI) has said.

Gross National Product – the value of every-thing we produce – is expected to rise more than 3.5 per cent both in 2015 and again in 2016.

This will lead to a recovery that will see the numbers unemployed dipping below ten per cent by next year, the researchers said.

Latest figures show 11.5 per cent of the work-force are unemployed, with more than 400,000 people on the dole.

The last time fewer than ten per cent were out of work was at the end of 2008.

While the Institute paints a glowing picture for the economy in its latest report on the state

of the nation, it is warning of a number of threats that need to be addressed.

‘While the outlook is positive, the weak growth prospects for the eurozone are a con-cern. Domestically the particularly low rate of investment, the high rate of unemployment and the weak levels of credit being extended remain to be addressed,’ it said.

The think tank also dismissed claims by some observers of a property bubble.

House prices are still undervalued and will continue to rise until a significant number of new homes are built, the ESRI said, adding that the cost of living, including house prices, need-ed to be kept in check if the economy is to con-tinue growing.

Space rock: The rough surface of the comet, left and inset, holds secrets from the dawn of the solar systempicture: esa/epa

Rosetta catches up with comet after ten-year chase through spaceWHEN the comet-chasing probe Rosetta began its mission, Facebook was just a month old.

Yesterday, Rosetta finally caught up with its rubber duck-shaped target.

The spacecraft has been pursuing the lump of dust and ice since March 2004 and has travelled about 6.4billion km in its chase. In a historic first, Rosetta began orbiting the comet, which is hurtling around the Sun at 55,000kph.

It will now match its pace as they travel together through space 400million km from Earth. ‘Rosetta is the sexiest space mission there has ever been,’ said Matt Taylor, a scientist with the €1.4million European project. It will maintain a 100km distance for two weeks before edging much closer to the

surface. Rosetta will travel with the comet for 17 months as it heads towards the Sun and heats up, throwing out hot gas and dust. If all goes to plan, a probe featuring a mini-laboratory will land on the surface of he catchily-named 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko in November.

Information gathered may help scientists understand the origin of comets, the solar system and even life on Earth.

WHAT do you do if you’ve got a jumbo-sized itch? Well, this elephant turned to a car to scratch its back and belly. And yes, it crushed the VW Polo while relieving its irritation – leaving two people inside terrified but unharmed at Pilanesberg National Park, South Africa. The animal was likely on musth – where testosterone levels soar – when the itch hit, said guide Armand Grobler. ‘After a good scratch, it left,’ he added

ONE in four young Europeans has admitted to having taken a selfie while at the wheel. New research, which was carried out by carmaker Ford, surveyed over 7,000 smartphone users aged 18 to 24. It found almost a quarter have posted an update while at the wheel, with almost half of these on the move. Researchers estimate it takes four seconds to adjust a rear-view mirror, seven seconds to dial a phone number, and over 14 seconds to grab a pic. Ford is now providing training programmes throughout Europe and the US, to create awareness among young drivers, where drivers undertake slow speed manoeuvres while taking a ‘selfie’ to show how much it inhibits reaction time.

Pedestrian hit bycity centre Luas COMMUTERS faced delays on the Luas Red Line yesterday after a pedestrian collided with the Luas at the Four Courts. The man was hit by the tram at 1.15pm. Emergency services were at the scene and the man, who is not believed to have been seriously injured, was taken to hospital. Red Line commuters also experienced further delays due to a technical fault on overhead wires between Red Cow and Kingswood. Dublin Bus were accepting tickets between Red Cow and Tallaght and Saggart, and an alternative bus service was in place. Services later returned to normal.

SuperValu drops Israeli carrotsSUPERVALU has ordered all of its stores to remove Israeli carrots from its shelves. An email instruction was sent to all 232 stores last Friday saying the Chantenay variety must not be sold. The supermarket chain is one of more than 20 retailers written to by trade union Mandate seeking a boycott of Israeli goods last week as the death toll in Gaza reached almost 1,900 Palestinians and 67 Israelis. SuperValu confirmed an instruction was sent to managers but said there was no ban on products from Israel: ‘We currently have sufficient stock from our usual suppliers, with no goods ordered from Palestine/Israel.’

McCollum to be moved to Northern jailCONVICTED drug smuggler Michaella McCollum is to be transferred from Peru to a jail in Northern Ireland.

McCollum, 21, from Dungannon, Co Tyrone, and her accomplice Melissa Reid, 20, from Glasgow, were jailed last year for six years and eight months after trying to smuggle cocaine worth €1.89million from Peru to Spain.

The Government has been

providing consular support to McCollum, an Irish citizen.

The Department of Foreign Affairs said: ‘The Peruvian authorities confirmed they have accepted Michaella’s prison transfer request and have passed this to the UK National Offenders’ Management Service which co-ordinates prisoner transfers to the UK.’

It could be months before she returns home as the logistics will be

complicated. The women are being held in the notorious Ancon 2 prison, where horrific conditions reportedly mean McCollum is crammed into a cell with 30 other prisoners.

The situation at the mixed prison, two-and-a-half hours from Lima, has previously been criticised by McCollum’s lawyer as ‘appalling’

Reid is also seeking to be repatriated to a prison in Scotland. Prison: McCollum (left) and Reid

Fleadh Cheoil hands back Shell’s fundingThE country’s biggest traditional music festival has snubbed energy giant Shell after activists kicked up a storm over sponsorship from the company.

Organisers of Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann, which pulls in about 300,000 visitors from home and abroad each year, took the last-ditch decision to reject money from the oil and gas multinational after they were accused of prostituting themselves and reneging on the ethos of promoting peace.

Activists from the Shell to Sea group claimed President

Michael D higgins was being put in an awkward position by officially opening the event, even though he has spoken out in favour of the communities affected by Shell’s Corrib gas project in Co Mayo.

The fleadh takes place in Sligo from August 10. The exact amount of money has not been confirmed.

Shell E&P Ireland, the Irish subsidiary of the multinational, said it was disappointed by the decision and said organisers had approached the company to become a sponsor.

Lawyer ‘overwhelmed’ by support for Facebook caseA LAWYER suing Facebook over online privacy is to limit the scale of the lawsuit after being overwhelmed with support.

Up to 7,000 users a day from more than 100 countries have registered backing for campaigner Max Schrems’ legal challenge in Austria.

The activist said the case, which could be the largest class and privacy action yet taken, will be restricted to 25,000 members of the social network in order to verify each account.

‘We have hoped for large support, but the number of participants in such a short

time exceeded my most optimistic expectations,’ he said.

Germany tops the list for the most people backing the case with 5,287 users, while there have been 944 users based in the UK and 162 from Ireland.

The action is being taken against the Irish subsidiary of the New York-listed web giant and claims Facebook Ireland is in breach of European law on users’ data and violates rights by tracking internet use on external sites, including the use of ‘Like’ buttons.

Mr Schrems says he has more than 20 active complaints of alleged breaches of data.Case: Schrems

We’re creating less waste and dumping less of our rubbish

by ORnA cunnIngHAMIRISH households are creating less waste and recycling more, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.

It found 2012 was the first year that more waste was recovered (59 per cent) than disposed of (41 per cent). Some 40 per cent of all municipal waste was re-cycled.

The figure is a reflection of ‘a combi-nation of measures’, a spokesperson said, including an increase in the use of municipal waste as a fuel and increases in the landfill levy for disposal of waste to landfill.

In its 2012 National Waste Report, published yesterday, the EPA also showed that all EU waste reduction tar-gets are on track to be met.

The data showed that municipal waste generated per capita has decreased by 24 per cent from 2007 to 2012, from 0.78 tonnes of waste per person in 2007 to 0.59 tonnes in 2012.

The EPA said that ‘the economic downturn undoubtedly had an impact

on the levels of waste generated’, but the trend was towards less waste being generated and improved waste preven-tion in the country.

EPA programme manager Dr Jonath-an Derham said: ‘The data shows that Irish society is producing less waste per capita and is deriving more value from the waste it does generate through recy-cling and use as a fuel.

‘Maximising the resource efficiency of all materials consumed is an essen-tial aim of our transition to a sustainable economy.’

But he warned there is only landfill space for another 17.3million tonnes of waste and alternative treatment options must be developed as landfill capacity continues to decline. Dr Derham added: ‘Ireland is now one of the top EU per-formers in relation to waste generation per capita and in achievement of our EU waste management obligations.’

Victim of DIY saw accident has replacement built on the cheap by designer friend

Grip: Mr Kamarata

Replacement: The hand built by Casey Barrett PIctures: charlIe leIght/the rePublIc/recFX FOuNDatION

WHEN three of his fingers were severed, pipe fitter Howard Kamarata thought he would never be able to afford the €30,000 for a prosthetic hand.

But the 57-year-old’s life is back on track, thanks to a €75 replacement partly made on a 3D printer.

Mr Kamarata, whose fingers were cut off by a mitre saw in a DIY accident in

October, was offered a new hand by industrial designer Casey Barrett.

Mr Kamarata, from Arizona, said he and wife Pat ‘just smiled’, perhaps not believing such a disability could be fixed so easily. But Mr Barrett said: ‘A few

months earlier, I’d seen a video online of someone who made a hand for a child.’

He bought a 3D printer and used it to make pieces for each missing finger, which were put together with a glove, fishing wire, pins and screws bought at a

DIY shop. Now Mr Kamarata can pick up things, carry items and even dial num-bers on phones.

‘I did some research and found some-one who had made a design that would work for Howard,’ said Mr Barrett.

Ebola dead ‘abandoned on roads by loved ones’THE bodies of ebola victims are being abandoned in the streets by relatives afraid of being quarantined as the death toll from the world’s worst outbreak will soon reach 1,000.

In Liberia, affected families are in a state of panic – as they believe ebola isolation wards are death traps. Information minister Lewis Brown said such actions made matters worse.

‘We’re asking people – please, leave the bodies in their homes and we’ll pick them up,’ he urged.

Ebola is transmitted through direct contact with the bodily fluids of someone who is infected. As yet, it has no proven vaccine or

treatment. In total, 932 have died from the epidemic. The World Health Organisation said 45 died between Saturday and Monday.

Two US aid workers who contracted ebola in Liberia seem to be improving after they received an unapproved medicine ahead of their evacuation.

The drug, ZMapp, has only been tested on monkeys. It is unclear if this lies behind their improvement.

Meanwhile, Ireland will send an additional €120,000 to the affected areas – delivering a sum total of €350,000 to the region. The funding will be provided directly to Irish Aid partners Goal and World Vision Ireland.

Drug ship had stop in DublinSPANISH police have seized127kg of cocaine from a navytraining ship which visitedDublin in June. It allegedly carried the drug from Colombiawith a drop-off in New York. Three sailors were arrested onJuly 12 when the ship returnedto Spain, but the drug wasn’tfound until last Saturday, hiddenin the ship’s reserve sails. USauthorities arrested two Colombians who allegedly picked up 20kg of cocaine fromsailors on the ship, the JuanSebastian de Elcano, during aNew York stop in May after they were contracted by traffickers to transport the drug.

Gaza truce likely to be extended past deadlineISRAEL has agreed to extend a truce in Gaza beyond tomorrow’s deadline, an official has said.

The comments came as negotiations over extending a ceasefire and ending a blockade of the territory got underway between Israeli and Palestinian officials in Cairo yesterday.

The unnamed official said: ‘Israel has expressed its readiness to extend the truce under its current terms,’ referring to the deal brokered by Egypt that took effect on Tuesday. Hamas had no immediate comment.

Israel wants Islamic militant group Hamas to disarm before considering its demand that the

territory’s borders be opened. Israel and Egypt imposed a closure after the Hamas takeover of Gaza in 2007, although Egypt allows individuals to cross intermittently.

Meanwhile, Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu defended Israel’s attack on Gaza, saying that despite the high civilian death toll it was a ‘justified’ and ‘proportionate’ response. Nearly 1,900 Palestinians have been killed in the conflict, most of them civilians, while 64 Israeli soldiers and three civilians have also been killed.

In a step toward reconstruction in Gaza, Norway is organising a donor conference for next month.

commuters work together, using bare hands, to free trapped train passenger

MOST days it’s difficult to find someone willing to shift along a seat to make space for you in the rush-hour commute.

But not all passengers are mean-spirited, as this lot proved when a fellow traveller fell as he boarded his daily service, wedging his leg in the gap.

With the man firmly trapped between the platform and the train, commuters and rail workers teamed up to rock the carriage to free him.

Quick-thinking staff alerted the driver not to leave the station then got all passengers off the train to take part in the rescue effort.

About 100 commuters leaned against the carriage and all pushed

together to tip it away from the platform and save the passenger.

Praising commuters who helped free the man after he slipped at Stirling station, near Perth, West-

ern Australia, Transperth spokes-man David Hynes said: ‘We hear a lot about poor behaviour on public transport, so it’s really great when something like this happens and

people work together to help a fellow commuter.’

He said the passenger, who has not been named, was not hurt in Tuesday’s incident.

‘After being seen by emergency services he boarded a later train to the city,’ Mr Hynes added.

Passenger Nicholas Taylor, who helped heave the train off the man’s leg in the morning rush-hour, said: ‘He seemed a bit sheep-ish, because he fell right where the “mind the gap” writing was.’

Mr Taylor said rail staff did a ‘really good job’ by taking com-plete control of the situation.

‘They handled it well. It took about ten minutes to free him. When I first saw it, I thought we’d be there for hours,’ he added.

Becks gets his teenage kicks on skateboard

Kanye: I’m smart, not dumb like BritKANYE WEST had a pop at reformed wildchild Britney Spears as he swore underoath that he’s the ‘smartest celebrity’ to land in the dock. The rapper, who’s facingtrial for hitting a photographer last year, boasted as he recorded testimony for usein court. ‘I’m the smartest celebrity you’veever f***ing dealt with. I’m not BritneySpears,’ the 37-year-old proclaimed.

MILEY CYRUS has shown off two new tattoos. The 21-year-old added Flaming

Lips’ track Love Yer Brain to her right forearm and a crescent

moon on her left inner-arm. Cyrus was inked by her fave tattooist, Bang Bang.

BROOKLYN BECKHAM is a chip off the old block, it seems, after his actress girlfriend Chloe Grace Moretz revealed he’s a little daredevil.

The 15-year-old footballer’s son likes to play with fire when skateboarding – but Moretz, who is two years his senior, likes to be a little more careful.

When asked about her hang-outs with Beckham Jr, the Kick Ass star revealed: ‘I think he’s a risk taker, like a typical guy, weaving in and out of people. I’m a safety boarder – I don’t want to break any bones.’

Speculation that Moretz and young Becks were dating has been rife for the past three months – after sparks flew when they were introduced by mutual friends.

Not too long ago, they were pictured skateboarding in

sun-soaked Los Angeles.Asked who was better at their

fun pastime, the teen performer added: ‘I don’t know. I mean, he has a pretty small skateboard and I like more of a long board.’

According to friends, Posh and Becks have given the pair

their ‘blessing’ as they hang out this summer in LA.

There, they have also been spotted at a spinning class at Soul Cycle in Brentwood, where David and son often enjoy a workout. And even though the couple are only teenagers, their jetsetting lifestyles have seen them meet up in Paris.

But well-connected Moretz can count a few famous Brits as friends, she told Company magazine.

The son of Jude Law and Sadie Frost, Rafferty, is in her social circle – as well as the

daughter of Jonathan Ross and Jane Goldman.

‘I lived in London for so long when I filmed Hugo and Kick Ass,’ she said.

‘I’ve known Raff since I was like, 14,’ the US-born star added.

Am I the only one who feels that compa-nies and the Government do not provide enough staff any more to answer phone calls? When I ring, the usual long ‘suite’ of options is recited, and then you are asked to email your query, rather than be put through to a real person. When you hold you are left for a long time waiting for ‘an agent’, all the while paying for a premium rate call. It smacks of a scam. Does any one else feel the same? Anto, Ringsend

Cosy comfort’s cool edge

Thea Bregazzi is sitting poised at her desk opposite her business partner, husband Justin Thornton, in the couple’s studio in

a converted attic in Kensal Green, north London. She’s wearing a cosy knit cardigan over a blouse with her flame-red hair cascading down. a pair of classic black jeans and practical leather boots finish off the look.

Bregazzi is the perfect embodiment of Preen, the brand she’s carefully built with Thornton since setting up the label in London 18 years ago. ‘My wardrobe is full of Preen, past and present,’ she says. ‘I keep almost everything. This is Preen from years ago,’ she says pointing to her top, ‘and this is from 2006,’ she says, referring to the cardigan.

Thornton chimes in: ‘Thea does an order like it’s for a small shop.’

‘That’s not true,’ she says coyly, ‘but it is what I live in. Preen collection is great for events but I’m a mum running after kids, so I need jeans, easy tops. Comfort and practicality are everything for me.’

It’s that down-to-earth cool that has given Preen an appeal extending far beyond the runway. even if the name doesn’t ring a bell, you’veprobably seen its wares on the backs of stars ranging from Julia Roberts and Jessica Chastain to Gwyneth Paltrow and Claire Danes.

Bregazzi and Thornton met aged 18 in their native Isle of Man before working together for British designer helen Storey. afterwards, they launched Preen, selling clothes inspired by Victoriana and punk rock from their first shop on London’s Portobello Road.

‘It was nothing serious,’ Bregazzi says nonchalantly. ‘We were just having a good time.’

Preen’s Thea Bregazzi andJustin Thornton no longerdo indie looks, writesNaomi Mdudu

Pop icon Cher was among the first to come knocking and they soon had a roaring business in Japan. ‘They were obsessed with anything British at the time,’ says Thornton – and it

wasn’t long before the brand had garnered a cult following in London.

The rubber pencil skirts, denim pedal-pushers and drainpipes they were selling when they started out reflected their lifestyles and what they were wearing at the time. ‘We were going out in Camden a lot and going to see bands so [our look] was a little bit indie meets Britpop,’ says Thornton.

As their own styles changed, so did the brand. ‘We’ve always designed for us and our friends, so we’re not designing for teenagers anymore,’ says Thornton. ‘our friends have gone from being the people we go clubbing with to CEos and executives. They’ve got big jobs but still want to go to music festivals. They want a bit of rock’n’roll in their wardrobes but they need cocktail attire and they need smart. our style is a mix of the two.’

Having worked together for so long, their individual sensibilities have developed as one. ‘We’ve always had similar tastes,’ says Thornton. ‘Being able to travel together is so exciting. We see things at the same time and we’re inspired by the same thing at the same time.’

Despite showing menswear for a few seasons, they decided to bring it to an end to focus on sister range preen Line, so Thornton lives in navy – ‘that way I don’t have to think, because everything goes together’ – and a uniform of jeans, shirts and soft jackets.

The leave-on tanWhat is it? The new St Tropez Self Tan Express BronzeMousse is a super-speedy tanthat allows you to choose yourcolour, depending how longyou leave the product on –one hour for a light tan, two hours for medium and threefor a deep colour. What happened? I appliedthe mousse using the tanningmitt supplied and was relievedto find it had St Tropez’s summery signature scent. Themousse is tinted, which allowsyou to see where you haveapplied it, so there’s no chance of unwelcome second coats. Afterleaving it on for an hour I washed it off in theshower.Did it work? The best thing about this tan wasthat once I had washed it off, there was noscent left on my skin. It was also remarkably streak free considering my fairly haphazard application. The colour was very light (as theone-hour option had suggested it would be)but it was even and looked natural. Happily,my bed sheets didn’t stain an unsightly orangecolour. My only issue was the tan lasted forjust one day: next time I’ll aim for a deepershade and leave it on for longer. Jenny Reilly€41, st-tropez.com

The application tanWhat is it? Tan Organic is an Irishself-tanning oil made from 80 percent aloe vera with a little rosehip, macadamia, orange peel andalmond oil. There are no parabensand no artificial drying agents andinstead of smelling of old biscuits(like most other fake tans) it’s freshand sweet. What happened? My therapistused a rough exfoliation mitt on

my body, focusing on my elbows, knees and feet. This, shesays, is the mostimportant part of thewhole process. Then, with latex gloves, sheapplied the tanning oilusing her hands. The trick issmall, firm, circular motions andpatience – it’s not a quick process.Did it work? Within an hour, asubtle gold colour began to glow and because it is an oil, it

soaked into my skin as my therapist applied it. Icontinued to glow forabout four days and then itfaded naturally. Althoughyou can top it up yourself, Iwould be wary: the colourdoesn’t show until it istotally soaked in, so yousimply have to apply it andhope for the best.Lisa ScottFrom €19.99, tanorganic.com

Because orange isn’t the new tanWant bronzed skin without looking like an Oompa Loompa or putting yourself at risk? We put three safe, UV-free tans to the test

The spray tanWhat is it? Mii Cosmetics has just launched its Kissed By Mii home-tanning range and its professional spray tan for salons. Its makers claim the coral seaweed and coastal flowers help to replenish your skin’s natural minerals, leaving it super-soft.What happened? The salon visit involves the usual ‘pose and spray’ but with an attempt to bring back the luxury experience that seems to have been lost, so fluffy robes to maintain modesty and hair

turbans are used. The spray is non-greasy and has a fresh marine scent. I went home, slept (no stained bedsheets), and washed off the tint in

the morning.Did it work? I was amazed at the quick-drying properties of the treatment. I dressed in seconds and

left the salon confident I wouldn’t get streaking. A golden glow ensued, albeit with that unavoidable ‘beefy’ smell until I showered. The tan was a perfect colour for my skin tone and the home products helped prolong the colour for an extra few days. Vicki-Marie CossarFrom €32, kissedbymii.com

LOUIS VAN GAAL is not prepared to splash £47million on Arturo Vidal until he is certain the midfielder doesn’t have a dodgy knee.

Vidal has been strongly linked with a moveto Old Trafford all summer after impressing for Chile at the World Cup.

However, the 27-year-old had rushed back from cartilage surgery at the start of May to appear in Brazil and his national manager Jorge Sampaoli believes the sacrifices he made to put his country first could cost him a move to Old Trafford.

‘The problem in Vidal’s transfer from Juventus to Manchester United is the doubt

Van Gaal has with respect to the improve-ment of Arturo’s knee,’ Sampaoli told a Chilean newspaper.

Sampaoli said Vidal was able to play at ‘only 30 or 40 per cent of the level shown in Juventus’ but that he set a great example by playing at the World Cup, even though it could complicate his personal goals.

‘His attitude to his team-mates is all you can ask. It really was out-standing,’ added Sampaoli.

Meanwhile, Van Gaal has hinted he may be interested in Fiorentina’s

Colombia winger Juan Cuadrado.

‘I cannot talk about Cuadrado, because if I say

something about him the price will rise,’ said the

Dutchman.

‘When they tell you Liverpool want to sign you, I think like any player, you are going to be absolutely amazed and you

don’t think of anything else than going straight there.

‘The immediate objective is to do the best I possibly can here. I’ve come here to try and secure a place for myself in the side and, if possible, stay here for

many more years in the future.’Reds boss Brendan Rodgers is still

hopeful of adding a striker to his squad and continues to be linked to Manquillo’s fellow Spanish full-back, Sevilla’s Alberto Moreno.

Legia loss spells disaster for under-pressure Deila

CELTIC were booed off at Murray-field after an abject performance saw them slip out of the Champions League against Legia Warsaw.

After just four competitive games in charge, pressure is already mounting on new manager Ronny Deila, who admitted before the game that defeat would be a ‘disaster’.

There is some consolation for the Hoops, who drop into the Europa League play-off round.

But there is no guarantee they will make the group stage, so badly were they outplayed over the tie.

Murrayfield – being used as Celtic Park remains out of commission following the Commonwealth Games

– was far from full and could not rep-licate the atmosphere of a European night in the east end of Glasgow.

Following Legia’s 4-1 win in the first leg, Michal Zyro’s strike in the 36th minute effectively ended Celtic’s hopes.

Michal Kucharczyk added a second on the hour to rub salt in the wounds.

After the damage of Warsaw, Deila had to come up with something special.

Without defender Efe Ambrose who was sent off in Poland last week, the Norwegian brought in left-back Emilio Izaguirre, midfielder Nir Biton and striker Anthony Stokes,

with Teemu Pukki and Jo Inge Berget dropping to the bench.

Celtic started on the front foot and Legia keeper Dusan Kuciak did well to hold an Adam Matthews cut-back. But the visitors looked potent on the counter-attack and there was a sign of things to come when captani Ivica Vrdoljak had an effort from 20 yards saved by Fraser Forster.

In the 33rd minute, Matthews drove down the right but failed to find a team-mate with his pass, to the frus-tration of Stokes. Three minutes later, it was all over for Celtic.

A long ball from Kucharczyk sent Zyro through as Izaguirre failed to deal with the danger and the striker slipped the ball past Forster.

Celtic were booed off at the break

but they did not improve in the second half. Stokes forced a good save from Kuciak with a curling shot from 20 yards in the 56th minute before Kris Commons came close with an effort which flew just wide.

Striker Leigh Griffiths replaced defender Mikael Lustig, with captain Charlie Mulgrew dropping into defence, but the Hoops were disjoint-

ed and dispirited, all too easily allowing Kucharczyk to sneak into the box, take possession of a Zyro flick and round Forster before knock-ing in from an angle.

Pukki replaced Commons and James Forrest came on for Stokes but there was still no way through for Celtic, the noise of the final whistle immedi-ately drowned out by boos.

Trainer attackends Macklin Dublin boutBOxeR Matthew Macklin has pulled out of his middle-weight clash with Jorge Sebastien Heiland in Dublin due to his lead trainer Jamie Moore being shot twice in the legs in Marbella.

British-born Macklin was looking to secure a fourth world title chance, in what was billed as an official eliminator for the WBC crown at 160lbs.

However, the Irish favourite has postponed the bout, booked for August 30 at the National Stadium, after Moore’s attack in Spain.

‘I am disappointed to have to postpone my fight, but in the light of the circumstances and the disruption to my preparation it is the right thing to do,’ said Macklin.

‘every fight at this stage in my career is of huge impor-tance and being 100 per cent for the night is vital.’

As a result of Macklin’s withdrawal from the card, Matchroom has revealed the entire show has been scrapped until later in the year.

Macklin added: ‘We will make an announcement shortly on a new date and I look forward to fighting in Dublin in 2014.’

Moore, who was reportedly shot at five times and hit twice, in the leg and hip over the weekend, is in hospital.

He tweeted on Tuesday: ‘Thanks for all the well wishes. Overwhelmed. Gutted and confused about what happened, but thank God I’m ok. x. It’s at times like this that you realise how well your thought of. I’ve had unbeliev-able support. Means a lot it really does. #BoxingFamily’.

Reds face Real-ity asKarim gets new dealKARIM BENZEMA dealt a blow to any hopes Liverpool and Arse-nal had of landing him by sign-ing an extension to his contract at Spanish giants Real Madrid yesterday.

The 26-year-old striker’s fu-ture had been uncertain this sum-mer after Real snapped up Co-lombian World Cup star James Rodriguez for £63m and the Spanish giants were linked with a swoop for Monaco hitman Radamel Falcao.

However, Benzema, whose con-tract was due to expire at the end of

next season, has ended specu-lation over his future by pen-

ning a new deal that will see

him stay at

Los Blancos until 2019. ‘Real Madrid would like to an-

nounce the extension of Karim Ben-zema’s contract with the club until June 30, 2019, to include the next five seasons,’ a statement said on Real’s website.

Benzema joined Real in 2009 from French side Lyon for £30million and has scored an impressive 111 goals in 235 matches.

Premier League duo Liverpool and Arsenal were reportedly keen on signing the French international

but both clubs will now have to look elsewhere for attacking tal-ent.

Reds boss Brendan Rodgers had earmarked Benzema to fill the void left by Luis Suarez after his £75m move to Barcelona, while Gunners manager Arsene Wenger has been looking for another striker to chal-lenge Olivier Giroud.

Having ditched a move for QPR striker Loic Remy already this sum-mer, Liverpool may now consider going back in for Swansea City pow-erful striker Wilfried Bony, who scored 25 goals last season.

Both Arsenal and Liverpool face a race against time to sign a forward before the transfer window closes on August 31.

Mission impossible: Mikel Lustig retrieves the ball as Celtic lose a crucial away goal

CELTIC crashed out of Champions League quali-fying last night after an inept home display against Legia Warsaw ended in a 6-1 aggregate loss.

Ronny Deila’s side had gone into the Murrayfield tie needing to overturn a 4-1 defeat from the first leg in Poland. But goals either side of half-time from Michal Zyro and Michael Kucharczyk put paid to any hopes of a comeback.

The Hoops now drop into the play-off stage of the Euro League, the draw for which takes place tomorrow. But the pressure will now pile on new boss Deila after a shocking start to his Celtic career, while the board will also face criticism for a perceived lack of investment in the squad.
