On Nov. 29, United Methodists will come together
to support the work of Advance missionaries and
projects on UMC #GivingTuesday. Last year,
more than 770 Advance missionaries and projects
received 8,757 gifts through The Advance,
the denomination’s designated giving channel.
The theme for UMC #GivingTuesday 2016 is “Give Light, Give Love, Give Life.” Every
day, you give God’s light, love, and life through your faithful work, prayers, and gifts.
This year, consider supporting a project that is working in an area you care most
about. Gifts made through The Advance make a tangible difference in the lives of
those we serve. Also, look out for more information and resources coming soon at
www.umcgivingtuesday.org.
The Clarkston UMC sponsors Katherine Parker, Missionary to Nepal. More infor-
mation about her mission work and how to help pay her salary can be found at
http://www.umcmission.org/Explore-Our-Work/Missionaries-in-Service/Missionary-
Profiles/Parker-Katherine
Another advance that will help support Katherine’s work is:
Integrated Community Development Project of the United Mission to Nepal
Advance #3021568
#3021568 - Using media and mass mobilization to promote social programs for
people living in remote areas.
Background/History
Nepal is the 19th poorest country in the world, and the
poorest in Asia, after Afghanistan. About a quarter of the
population live below the poverty line. The gap between
rich and poor is growing. Political instability since the civil
war that ended in 2006 has meant that the basic and devel-
opment needs of the people remain largely unaddressed.

We live in a world of cynicism. It is, in fact, the common language of our day. One might
even say it is the new religion of the world. You hear the voices call to you—“Oh, don’t
get your hopes up. Whatever it is, it will let you down. That institution? That church?
That politician or authority figure? They’ll all let you down.”
“Whatever it is, whatever you do, don’t get your hopes up. You’ll only get burned.
Whatever you think it is, whatever your hopes are, just give it time. You’ll see.”
But here we are. We’re almost to Advent. I LOVE Advent. Advent steps on to
the scene and confronts this dark cynicism that has corroded our hearts. It tells
us that God has not abandoned this world, that hope is real and something is
coming.
Advent charges in to the temple of cynicism and overturns the tables of despair.
It announces that there is a new day coming, and it’s not like the old day.
And so each winter time we enter into this season of Advent, this season of waiting,
expecting, hoping, longing. This is where the Spirit meets our ache, and we ask God to
enter into the deep places of cynicism, hardness, and bitterness where we have stopped
believing that tomorrow can be better than today.
We peer into the eyes of a baby that was sent to renew, rebuild, and restore the world.
We catch our breaths, because the joy is overwhelming—indeed, the good news has
been sent, and it is not ours to keep, but instead it is ours to share.
THAT’S Advent. That we have received the one who was sent and now WE are sent
to deliver the gift of hope. As we move toward Christmas through Advent, here at
Clarkston UMC we will be taking a look at what it means to be sent. We’ll examine the
how, where, and to whom we have been sent. We will learn about God’s great longing
for this world, and how we are part of the fulfillment of that longing.
Each week of Advent we will explore these themes, and the small groups will be kicking
off during Advent, all looking at one particular Advent study called “Sent.” Each session
will feature a short video and discussion time all about these ideas. We would love to
have as much participation as possible, so please talk to me about how you can join.
I hope you have a joy filled Holiday season, one filled with blessing—but one that also
moves you as one sent into the world to bring blessing to others!

The Finance Committee is having a money raising project during November and December.
We will offer glass spun memorial hearts for your Christmas tree. Each heart will cost
$5.00 and have the name of the loved one you are honoring along with that person’s birth
date and death date on a banner attached to the spun heart. There will be a Christmas tree
on the table in the foyer. As I receive the papers and money for each heart, I will make
the heart with the information you have provided. I would like to use the month of
November to gather the information and make the hearts. The tree will be put up right
after Thanksgiving. I will put the hearts on the tree every Sunday morning, or if I have
quite a few, I’ll start on Saturday. You will be able to take your heart(s) home on
December 18 to decorate your tree at home.
This will be a great gift for grandchildren to remember grandparents or
to remember any other family or friend they, or you loved or admired.
I have approximately 100 glass spun hearts and I would love to get them all
made up for you!

Nativity Showcase
Last year the showcase was really awesome! This year we hope to serve
even more people by providing a quiet time to share and talk about
the Christmas story through the nativities. The Advent Team will be hosting
the 4th annual Nativity Showcase December 9-11. Admission is free! There will
be cloth nativities that children can play with, festive refreshments, a choir
cantata, and more. This year the choir cantata will be even bigger! Look for more infor-
mation as we get closer to that date. Our facility is handicap accessible.
The showcase will be open to viewing from 5:00-8:00 p.m. on Friday, from 8:00 a.m.-
5:00 p.m. on Saturday, and from noon to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday. On Saturday all are also
welcome to come to breakfast from 8:00-9:00 a.m. The Nativity Showcase is open to the
public to view the nativities, and submit their own. Nativities need to be registered
by December 7. Those registering nativities will need to set them up sometime between
12:00-4:00 p.m. on Friday the 9th, and pick them up at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday the 11th.
Nativities can be dropped off in the church office the week before the showcase and we
will set them up.
The Advent Team is really excited about inviting the community into our church to
share in the story of the Nativity. To advertise the showcase, we will be walking and
handing out postcards in the Clarkston Christmas Parade. If you would like to help with
the parade or the showcase, please let Kaylissa Beale, Pastor Cody, or Judy Elliott know.
And please share this information!

As part of our partnership with Highland
Elementary School the Outreach Committee
will be providing Christmas food boxes to be sent home with the kids that
normally receive the weekend Backpack Program. During Christmas vaca-
tion, the kids will not have the meals the Backpack Program provides, so we
want to provide easily prepared food for them to have during the school break. This
year we will be fixing 25 or more boxes.
Your monetary donation to help with this ministry is greatly appreciated. If you wish
to contribute, please give your donation to Tom Truscott. Thank you for your help!
There will be a Charge Conference on
Wednesday, November 16, at 5:00 p.m.
in the downstairs fellowship room. This is
the meeting where we vote on the Nomi-
nations Committee report and introduce
the 2017 budget.

Pumpkin Picking with Highland Elementary Kids
On Thursday and Friday, October 20-21, children from kindergarten and first grade
classes came to pick a pumpkin from our patch. Tana Truscott, Master Gardener, orga-
nized the event and had help from church members and other Master Gardeners.
Games were played, treats were enjoyed, and a little knowledge about pumpkins was
passed on also. Thank you to those who helped with the fun time!
FREE Christmas Cards will be available for you sometime during
the month. Please look for them on the kitchen hallway counter.
If you need cards before they get put out, please check with the
Office. A time for you to get some cards can be arranged.
