What’s so special about license plates, you may ask? Well, they helped to idenfy me, or at least my car, when I was approved to travel on wind- swept, icy and snowy closed highways. And it’s important that we share the presence of Christ with those around us by living that presence and loving naturally. We don’t need license plates to idenfy us as Christ followers. People can see it by observing how we live. Showing God’s love and being part of a community of faith are witnesses to who we are and whose we are. Thank you for being such good examples! Pastor Bill’s Word of the

Month for Prayer and Reflection is:

License Plates. That’s what I look at every morning before backing out of the garage. They’re hanging on the wall in front of the car. They remind me of the state we lived in before coming to Missouri.

What’s so special about license plates, you may ask? Well, they helped to identify me, or at least my car, when I was approved to travel on wind- swept, icy and snowy closed highways. That way the state patrol could ensure I got through to my destination. The key here is that they helped to identify me.

Being a Christian carries some identifiers as well. Can you think of some of the common ones?

The one that comes to my mind first is captured in an “old” “contemporary” song, “they’ll know we are Christians by our love.” That means our love for each other and our love for everyone else. That means everyone else, even those outside our Christian family and community.

The question then is how do we do that? How do we love each other? Jesus taught that love is shown by how we treat each other – not as an emotion, but as action. Jesus showed us how he understood that to happen. He cared for those less fortunate than he.

Now that would have been a pretty hard thing for him to do. He was poor. He had what he wore. He depended on others for food. He was frequently inviting himself to dinner at someone’s house. So what could be meant by “less fortunate?”

Jesus showed us as he blessed those who were poor in spirit, those who mourned, those who were meek, those who were hungering and thirsting after the righteousness God was giving, those who extended mercy, those who had pure hearts, those who loved peace and made peace, and those who were persecuted for God’s sake. He blessed people with God’s love and forgiveness.

Notice that the rich as well as the poverty stricken all have those characteristics and need God’s love and forgiveness. So does everyone else. The Holy Spirit prepares and brings to Jesus those who are open to receiving God’s great mercy into their hearts. That can be any-one. As the apostle Paul put it in Galatians 3:28, “There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male and female; for all of you are one in Christ Jesus.” We’ve all been adopted equally. We’ve all been loved and accepted, just as we are.

It’s important to know that we share in God’s love. It’s important to know that we belong to each other. And it’s important that we share the presence of Christ with those around us by living that presence and loving naturally.

We don’t need license plates to identify us as Christ followers. People can see it by observing how we live. Showing God’s love and being part of a community of faith are witnesses to who we are and whose we are. Thank you for being such good examples!

May the presence of Christ in your lives continue to witness to those around you.

Blessings,

• 3rd-5th Grade: taught by Cindy Cummins. • Middle School: taught by Mary Ann Sander.

These classes are all using the fun Whirl Lectionary Sunday School lessons. Each week’s lesson uses the same scriptures read in worship and so, ties in with Pastor Bill’s message! The lessons include various activities to keep it interesting, such as colorful worksheets,

discussion and fun video lessons. Learn more at: www.wearesparkhouse.org/kids/whirl.

YOUTH & CHILDREN’S SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASSES

Sunday School is at 9:45am. Children & Youth

have classes divided by age/grade in school:

• High School: taught by Lisa Dollens & Tom Pavlak (who is filling in for Amy Fair for a bit).

This class uses the BL4Y (Bible Lessons for Youth) which is designed to help the youngsters apply the Bible to their lives. They are encouraged to dig into the scriptures, then go live them out! Learn more at: www.cokesbury.com/BL4Y

* B i b l e S t u d y C l a s s *

We are just a bunch of ordinary people looking for answers in all the right places. We search together, we grow together, and we find truth together.

Each week, we read a scripture, and then have a round table discussion on the meaning and the message. There are no wrong or right answers -

everyone interprets the scriptures in different ways.

Currently studying in Exodus, the book that tells how the Israelites leave slavery in Egypt through the strength of Yahweh.

Fellowship Hall west classroom. Contact: Beth Crum, 573-682-2655, [email protected]

Acts 17 describes Paul speaking about God to the people of Athens in front of — incredibly! — a site

that still exists. What is that site? A. The Panathenaic Stadium C. The Acropolis and the Parthenon

B. The Areopagus D. The Temple of Hephaestus

(Answer will be printed somewhere in the newsletter )

* Town & Country Sunday School Class *

Our class consists mostly of retired and “empty-nester” folks, but we welcome everyone! With shared leadership amongst

the class, we have a variety of lessons ranging from single-topic discussions to more in-depth book studies or series. Ol’ Bob Green

always has the coffee on - why not join us? Classroom is the left door at the end of education hallway.

“Your children will become what you are, so be what you want them to be.” - David Bly

We began Holy Week on Sunday April 9th - Palm Sunday, with our fun and meaningful Children’s Processional of Palms. That afternoon, the youth met at the home of Mandy & Seth Lafferty. Mandy used a thorny locust tree growing in the woods for a wonderful Holy Week object lesson, they stuffed Easter Eggs for the children’s hunt, and got to enjoy some of Lafferty’s menagerie of animals, including Lucille the potbelly pig and a litter of new puppies!

On Easter Morning at 6:15, the youth presented the Sunrise service (photo on page 2). They did a reader’s Easter drama, presented the scriptures and helped lead singing for the service. About 45 people were in attendance for this service. After the service the congregation and youth enjoyed a breakfast prepared by the youth mission team. The proceeds of the breakfast and the offering for the Sunrise Service were to benefit the Youth mission team trip to Montana next year.

Later on Easter morning, the children had their Easter Egg hunt out- side in the courtyard and inside the fellowship hall, as it had rained and the grass was still wet (photos here and on pages 2 & 4). A great thanks to the Sunday School teachers for leading the hunt and breaking down all the eggs after the hunt was over.

Scott Long Director of Children’s & Youth Ministries 573-819-1114, [email protected] Editor’s note: Lots of photos of the April 9th Youth Group and Easter morning posted on the church facebook page, www.facebook.com/ CentraliaUMC. Stewardship Update

Our Presence: Average worship attendance is 131 year-to-date for 2017 through mid-April; average attendance through the same period last year was 127, so we continue to grow!

Our Treasures: Our budget for January - March was $57,466. Our giving was $52,316, or $58,361 with the Auction proceeds included.

New Challenge: To continue to current level of giving, and consider a new goal. In 2016, we spent $12,000 replacing/improving the HVAC system in the sanctuary (after the old air conditioner went out). Those funds were borrowed from restricted sources. The regular budget does not include reimbursement of these funds, so the Budget & Stewardship teams have set a goal to raise $6,000 above the regular giving level in the months of May, June and July to repay 50% of the funds borrowed.

Our Talents: Many wonderful programs are occurring.

Our Prayers: Please continue the 7:15 prayer and general prayers for all concerns.

Submitted by Stewardship Team member Karl Shellbarger; a summary of the information presented in church by Nathan Chitwood on April 23, 2017.

1st quarter giving statements are being distributed; please contact Treasurer Sally Palmer as listed below with any questions.

OUR COVENANT PARTNER CHURCH: T-3 UMC, MOZAMBIQUE

Jim Downing’s Four D’s

Centralia was blessed to have Pearl Harbor survivor Jim Downing speak at CHS on the evening of April 26, 2017. A 103-year- old Navy veteran and the oldest living member of The Navigators campus and worldwide ministry organization, he has much wisdom to share. In addition to sharing the history of World War II Pearl Harbor attack, he shared what he calls “God’s formula for fulfillment, the four D’s, and they go hand-in-hand with being good stewards of all that God has given us:

1. Discover your gift. 2. Dedicate your gift to a higher cause. 3. Develop your gift to the maximum. 4. Deploy your gift.

Learn more about The Navigators at: Navigators.org. Jim’s book, The Other Side of Infamy: My Journey Through Pearl Harbor and the World of War, with James Lund, is available from Amazon and other booksellers.

Covenant Update and Palm Sunday 2017 at T-3 UMC, Mozambique.

We have a covenant to give a minimum of $990 to T-3 annually, as well as to support The T-3 congregation through prayer. Remember that you may give to T-3 at any time, simply make a note on your envelope and/or check.

We were blessed to have Craig Stevenson, Associate Director of the Mozambique Initiative, join us on Sunday April 2nd to give the message and to share about the current work of the Mozambique Initiative. Here are a couple of photos of the T-3 congregation’s celebration of Palm Sunday, more are posted on the bulletin board.

“Russ and I both grew up in Centralia and after we married in 1993, we moved to several different cities and states with his job and moved back "home" in 2009.

Russ is self employed working in the area of finance. Stephanie is a part-time bookkeeper for Russ and manages their rental properties. We were led to CUMC because it’s the church Russ grew up in and where his parents are currently active members. We love the mission opportunities, friendliness of the congregation and ongoing outreach programs for the community that CUMC provides.

We have 3 children. Jenna is currently a junior at the University of Missouri and is in the Radiography Program. Emily is a Junior at CHS and is active in softball, band, Chamber Choir and Student Council. Nathan is in 8th grade and is involved in swim team, basketball, track and golf and Honor's Club.

Russ has been attending the Bible Study class on Sunday mornings and Stephanie has become part of the Urban and Rural Class. Emily and Nathan are enjoying their youth Sunday school classes as well as the youth gatherings. We plan to go as a family on the Mission Trip to Montana. We love to travel, hike, and play golf as a family and stay busy with all of our children's sports and musical activities!”

April 3, 1939 - March 23, 2017

Caryl Ann Truby, 77, of Powell, Ohio, passed away at NCH Baker Hospital in Naples, Fla. on Thursday, March 23, 2017.

Services were held Saturday April 1, 2017, at Centralia United Methodist Church (Caryl grew up in this church, which during her youth was Allen Street Methodist Church).

She was born April 3, 1939 in Greensburg, Kan. to the late Wayne and Matilda Abendshien. She moved to Centralia, where she entered Centralia High School at the beginning of her freshman year. After high school, she married classmate Jerry Truby on June 25, 1958. After, they lived in Jefferson City and settled in Powell, Ohio in 1984 and now winter in Naples, FL.

Caryl loved life, family, and friends. Since her 20′s she had more than her share of health issues. With a smile, she would say “I’ve got a bunch of alligators chasing me.” Through it all she had an amazing positive attitude.

She is survived by her husband, Jerry, of 59 years; her devoted daughter, Jerri Ann Seidl; her son-in-law, Kipp; and her granddaughter, Sam, all of Cincinnati, Ohio; her brother, John Abendshien (Cynthia) of Lake Forest, Ill.; and a number of nieces and nephews, Steve Shores, Patti Keeling (Duane), Craig Shores (Nancy), Charla Barnes (Brad), Beth Mead (Sam), Jeff Abendshien (Sandy), Robert Abendshien (Karen), Melanie Abendshien, Amy Bryan (Scott) and Lauren Lee (Tom).

Caryl is preceded in death by her sister, Joyce Roth (Bill) of Centralia; and brother, Bob Abendshien (Judy) of Las Vegas. Bob donated one of his kidneys to Caryl in 1975, which provided Caryl with 42 years of quality life. Donations can be made in Caryl’s honor to: The American Kidney Fund, 11921 Rockville Pike, Suite 300, Rockville MD 20852. http://www.kidneyfund.org

The CUMC Disaster Response Team (DRT) met on April 17th and are now planning on a deployment (mission trip) for May 22 through May 25, leaving early Monday morning on May 22nd, and returning the afternoon of Thursday May 25th. These dates have specifically been chosen because school will be out, so the team is very hopeful that several youth will be able to participate!

The team will work in either the St. Louis area or the Springfield area, depending on the best match of skill sets and whether youth are with the group or not. So, youth and parents, please let us know ASAP if any youth are wanting to go! Currently, the immediate storm response needs are being met, but there is a great deal of need in Missouri for long-term rebuilding efforts following flooding and storms, where we can help fill a need. Please prayerfully consider volunteering for this mission.

Please contact Karl Shellabarger, D.R.T. Leader, as listed below ASAP with questions or to sign up for this trip.

Dear United Methodist Church of Centralia, (late March 2017)

On behalf of Esther’s Pantry at Crossroads Cathedral Assembly of God, we wish to thank you for your recent food drive. What a great job you did in collecting food. We appreciate so much your desire to help the hungry of our community to have the food that they so desperately need.

Please let those who are in need of food, know that there is a food pantry in our community supported by your church and other churches and organizations of our community where they can find help.

Pastor David Hartgrove, Crossroads Cathedral Assembly of God and Volunteers and Staff of Esther’s Pantry

Remember that we have a collection bin under the hall table where you can place nonperishable food and household supplies for Esther’s Pantry at any time. Thank you!

UMM Meeting - April 5, 2017 Submitted by Henry Finck

Five members, including Pastor Bill, were in attendance and the discussion quickly turned to the question of increasing attendance.

The primary purpose of the meeting was originally to be the election of officers. That quickly hit a snag because it was expressed that many members had already “done their time” and were therefore reluctant to “do it again.” So we recognized that the lack of interest was at the root of low attendance, so the question became: What could be done to increase the group’s interest and involvement? It was thought that the development of ideas would be a good place to start.

OK. Ideas for what? Or what to do? Developing increased interest in anything takes effort and sometimes a lot of effort. So, where to start? The answer, in very general terms, is Community Betterment.

Now, the DRT is involved in developing ideas in relation to community betterment, but the concepts considered almost always require some time away from home. The idea here is to raise money for local needs that not only do not require away time, but can be accomplished within the church facility and — careful now — be lots of fun to boot!

What’s fun??? Fish fries, chicken barbeques, sausage/pancake breakfasts or dinners for that matter.

There is one area of charitable giving that we would like to avoid if possible. And that is giving to an organization that will use all or part of the donation for administrative costs.

If we used UMCOR as a model, we would be following a good example of using the money for direct benefit. Such as food for a needy family or a CPAP machine for someone who can’t afford one and can’t get help elsewhere. More ideas, please.

Finally, we might consider holding our meetings on the first Saturday MORNING for a BREAKFAST meeting. And inviting the ladies to attend. Not as voting members, but as a rich source of truly terrific ideas.

Many of know Jill Angell and her Senior Service Project group. Maybe by combining all our thoughts and ideas, we might develop a CUMC Youth Service Group. Hope this generates some thought and interest. Thank you.

THANK YOU to Chris Guinther for faithfully serving as the U.M.M. President for the past several years! Your time and efforts have been appreciated.

It was decided at the April meeting that Jim Matteson will serve as Interim President of our UMM.

If you have thoughts, ideas or questions about UMM, please contact Pastor Bill or Jim as listed below, or any of the UMM members.
