Office of Councillor Ernest SonnenbergMayoral Committee Member: Utility Services

Complete your supplier shortlist in just two days and save months of due diligence at the leading African power and water exhibition and conference.

Dear Colleagues

On behalf of Cape Town, the Mother City of South Africa and official 2014 Design Capital of the World, I have the pleasure of inviting you to attend African Utility Week & Clean Power Africa conference and exhibition being held in the central business district of Cape Town in May 2014.

The City of Cape Town’s Department of Utility Services’ goal is to not only provide basic services, but to minimise wastage and use our available resources to maximise output, while augmenting the associated economic activities that will be derived from having access to reliable and affordable power and water. In 2010 the City adopted the Energy and Climate Action Plan with 11 objectives that have seen a marked reduction in electricity demand in households. It is encouraging that our goals tie in perfectly with the overlaying theme of the conference and exhibition, Delivering Beyond Tomorrow, and I am honoured to have this prestigious event hosted in our vibrant economic and tourism hub.

As the City’s Utility Services Department we look forward to be given an opportunity to share and benchmark our successes and challenges with our peers from across Africa and learn what they have achieved to this day. African Utility Week’s focus on case studies will facilitate collaboration and interaction between cities and utilities on the continent and help all of us develop the skill sets needed to be recognised on an international level.

We look forward to sharing our lessons learnt with you during your visit to the City in May 2014. Let us meet in the unique spaces created at this conference to share insight, learn from experiences, and grow our network of peer-to-peer collaboration.

I trust you will enjoy your stay in the City and take home a plethora of learning to enhance your ability in Delivering Beyond Tomorrow.

Sincerely

Councillor Ernest Sonnenberg Mayoral Committee Member for Utility ServicesCity of Cape Town, South Africa

Koeberg Nuclear Power StationRegistration deadline for security processing: 24 March 2014. Delegates are required to submit a copy of their passport or identity document. Security approval cannot be guaranteed

An exclusive tour inside the workings of Africa’s only nuclear power station. Areas include the intake basin, turbine hall and low level waste unit. Koeberg Nuclear Power Station houses the only nuclear power reactors in Africa, each with a capacity of 900 MW. This is enough to provide continuous power for over two million middle-income houses. With no viable coal or gas to power stations for base-load electricity in the Western Cape, these reactors have been pivotal in creating stable and affordable electricity to the region for over two decades.

GlaxoSmithKline Factory and Hotel VerdeGlaxoSmithKline factory has reduced CO2 emissions by 7.5% and increased production by 5.2% through changing its workforce’s habits, work areas and production models and investing in a 80kWp solar PV array and solar hot water systems. Learn first-hand from their experience and ask technical questions on this and their plans for further sustainability projects.

Hotel Verde has the advantage of being built with photovoltaic panels, wind turbines, geothermal loops, grey water recycling and rain water harvesting from the start. Highlights on the tour include geothermal heat pumps bypassing the need for standard air-conditioning systems, complex pumps and piping network using the earth as a heat-source in winter and heat-sink in summer to boost efficiency and dramatically reduce operational costs.

Mariendahl Experimental Wind Farm and Villiera Wine FarmVisit Stellenbosch University’s Mariendahl Experimental Farm for a technical show and tell demonstration of the facilities that test renewable energy resources on a small scale. The farm has two 15kw wind turbines installed to evaluate wind energy technology from the turbine to the connection with the power network.

After lunch at a nearby wine farm, we will visit Villiera Wines which showcases the largest private photovoltaic installations in Southern Africa. The project involves approximately 900m2 of solar panels – 539 solar modules in total – mounted across three of the cellar’s roofs. This installed capacity is producing a total 726 kWh a day, with around five hours at 140 kWp (peak). This site visit includes a drive through the wildlife sanctuary which is home to springbok, kudu, giraffe and wildebeest and will also showcase environmental awareness efforts taking place at this award winning wine farm.

Fisantekraal Wastewater and Faure Water Treatment PlantThe Fisantekraal Wastewater Treatment Plant features an enhanced control centre system, uses ultraviolet light disinfection technology and the most innovative and up-to-date electrical control and instrumentation technology. See how the advanced biological reactor works with automated inlet screening and degritters, surface aerated biological reactors, secondary settling tanks, the sludge dewatering system (linear screens and belt presses), final effluent disinfection system and an extensive odour treatment facility. This latest plant is one of 23 waste water treatment works in the city and has the potential to be expanded as the need arises.

After lunch at a wine farm, the second visit will be to the Faure Water Treatment Plant which is one of the most sophisticated plants of its kind in Southern Africa.
