Thank you for buying our HEADHUNTER metaldetector. You have purchased one of the most compact

underwater metal detectors in the world. Not only doesthis metal detector contain today's most innovativeelectronics, it is the first water detector that has all theelectronics built into the headphones. By eliminating acontrol housing, weight of the detector is significantlyreduced and so is your arm fatigue. When you travel, theHEADHUNTER also takes up very little room. All of this ispossible because of our innovative micro circuitry andpackaging design. The HEADHUNTER was engineered to

perform best in both salt water and fresh water, but it isalso a very good land hunter as well. We feel it is a trueuniversal application metal detector.

TERMINOLOGY

If you are new to metal detecting, we have provideddefinitions below to help you better understandterminology used in this manual. The following was

reprinted with permission from: DETECTORIST, A How-ToGuide to Better Metal Detecting, by Robert H. Sickler.

AIR TEST - A test to determine the maximum sensitivity ametal detector is capable of under ideal conditions. Varioussized metal samples are held beyond the searchcoilbottom at varying distances to determine the limits ofaudio or visual response. Air tests are not accurateindicators of ground penetration ability. (see BENCH TEST)

ALKALINE - A grade of battery composition which sustainshigher current drain and possesses a greater shelf life thanbasic carbon-zinc types.

BENCH TEST - Another form of air test used to definewhich discriminate settings accept or reject various targetsamples. Detector is placed upon a stationary, nonmetallicrest and samples are manually passed across the bottom ofthe searchcoil.

CARBON-ZINC - The standard or basic grade of drycellbattery.

DISCRIMINATION - Circuitry and the mode of operation inwhich audio or visual responses from undesired metalobjects are intentionally eliminated.

GROUND BALANCE - A condition or mode of operation inwhich the detector is adjusted to optimally reduce theinterference that ground mineralization has on metaltargets.

MOTION DISCRIMINATOR - A detector requiring constantsearchcoil motion to reduce the effect ground mineralinterference has on its discriminate function.

PINPOINTING - The act of aligning the center of targetresponse width to the designated searchcoil center foraccurate location and careful recovery.

SENSITIVITY- The measure of a metal detector's capacityto sense changes in conductivity throughout the pattern

of detection set forth by the searchcoil configuration. (seeAIR TEST)

TARGET - Any buried or hidden object which a metaldetector responds to.

VOLUME CONTROL - A metal detector control whichregulates the loudness of target response.

HEADHUNTER DIVER & WADER models have threecontrols for the micro-encapsulated circuitry located inone sealed earcup of the headphones. Batteries are foundin the other earcup and are user accessible.

The Discrimination (DISC)control has stay-putsegmented position adjustments. The Volume (VOL)andSensitivity(SENS) control adjustments are continuous andnot segmented.

Segmented controls allow the operator to makeadjustments without removing the headphones to viewthe position numbers. Once discrimination points arelearned, the operator simply moves the control to the zerostop position and counts the segment clicks to make the

desired adjustment. This only requires learning where thethree controls are located and the starting points of eachcontrol. The control earcup should be worn on the side ofthe head opposite the arm used to sweep the searchcoilrod thus giving a free hand to comfortably makeadjustments. The Sensitivity control can be adjustedbackwards from maximum (10) to lessen the effects ofground mineralization and small surface trash. Obviouslythe Volume control is set to the users preference and

does not require a secure position. The stay-putsegmentation of the Discrimination control is the mostuser critical. Having this control accidentally loseadjustment could possibly make you lose some valuabletargets if set too high. NOTE: Diver model has awaterproof connector for changing to optionalsearchcoils.

DISCRIMINATION POINTS

Bench test your detector in an area free of metal and electricalinterference. For each item, return the DISC control to 0 androtate the knob while passing each item below the searchcoil.Stop the knob when the item no longer signals or the sound

character becomes broken. This number will be a discriminationreference point. It will not be possible for you to test all items onthe list, but this will give you an idea what different levels ofdiscrimination will do to your target. The items below are inorder of conductivity. Please note the good items mixed with thetrash items.

Operating Instructions:

The HEADHUNTER metal detector is one of thesimplest metal detectors to use. It employs fully

automated, ground balanced motion-discriminationcircuitry. The searchcoil must be in slight motion tomaintain audible target signal. The following is the basicstartup procedure for Diving & Wading.

1. Turn HEADHUNTER power ON. Set Volume to levelwhere you can hear target signals comfortably. This canbe accomplished by passing a coin back and forth underthe searchcoil. Regulator bubble noise can reduce yourhearing range and volume level should be increased

accordingly.2. Turn the Sensitivity control fully clockwise to the

maximum level. If you hear chatter or static, reducelevel until no interference is audible. In salt water, it maybe necessary to reduce sensitivity. Your HEADHUNTER isequipped with a quality "stay put" segmentedpotentiometer for the Discrimination control. Sensitivityand Volume are continuous turn controls. The Sensitivity

and Volume adjustments should be made according tohow your detector reacts in salt and fresh water.

3. Next adjustment will be setting the Discrimination level.After learning where unwanted items will bediscriminated out, you can adjust this before enteringthe water. If you want to change Discrimination levelsonce operating in water without having to view thecontrol, just simply count knob clicks from the "0"position. Again, bench testing will teach you what click

count setting certain objects are eliminated from audio.4. Swing your coil back and forth slowly over the water's

bottom. Keep the coil as close to the bottom aspossible. Solid sounding audio signals should always beinvestigated. Pinpointing a target is accomplished byraising the searchcoil off the target and slowing thesweep until the audio signal is centered under the coil inopposing sweep directions.

5. Retrieving targets submerged in water is more difficultthan on land or wading. Some hunters just fan thewater to move the sand while others will carry a specialdigging tool. Always carry a small "goody" bag to depositand transport your finds. Please remove and dispose ofall trash you find. No one likes digging it up more thanonce!

6. With experience you will become good at retrievingfinds no matter how bad the visibility.

Diving

Diving with the HEADHUNTER DIVER is not only fun,but very rewarding. People have been losing objects in thewater since the human race began. You now can startfinding your share of these lost valuables with yourHEADHUNTER metal detector. CAUTION: Do not attemptto dive unless you complete a thorough diver trainingcourse taught by a certified instruction agency.

Most treasure divers look for coins and jewelry. Everytown has a beach or some type of public swimming area.Most beaches are littered with trash objects thanneighboring land sites. We suggest you use as littlediscrimination in the water as possible. When you first getyour detector, bench testing it with various sizes of goldand silver rings and coins will train you how muchdiscrimination will be needed and at what numericalsettings. When you make your first dive, we suggest notusing the discriminator at all until you gain some waterhunting experience. In time you will learn how to retrievetargets even when water visibility is minimal. There aremany good books on the market that teach water huntingwith a metal detector. We suggest you learn all you can byreading about the many different searching and retrievaltechniques. However, nothing will replace gaining yourown experience.

Wading

Control setup for wading is the same as the above

Diving procedure with the only difference being you can'talways see or reach the water bottom where yoursearchcoil is. Most experienced waders purchase a qualitylong-handled scoop and floating sifter system. When youhear a signal that you want to retrieve, pinpoint it and useyour long-handled scoop to retrieve the target.

Note: WADER model is not designed for diving pressures. WADER iswaterproof up to 6 feet and can be accidentally dropped andsubmerged in water, but not used for Scuba diving. WADER & DIVER

models do not have a battery check system. They can be operatedcontinuously up to 50 hours on a fresh set of alkaline batteries. Theoperator is advised to keep track of time logged on each set ofbatteries to avoid shutdown in the middle of a hunt. Always carryfresh batteries as a backup on every hunt. This is common practice

with all detectors, with or without a battery check system.

Battery Replacement:

Your HEADHUNTER metal detector operates with two,9-volt standard batteries (not supplied). Hourly use can beextended by using 9V Alkaline batteries.

To add or replace batteries on the DIVER, place a coin

between the cup plate and the round stud on theearcup. Turn it until the cup "pops" open exposing thebattery compartment. To add or replace batteries on theWADER, place a coin into the slot on the earcup and turnuntil the cup "pops" open exposing the batterycompartment. Note the placement of the worn batteriesbefore removal. Remove the old batteries and insert twofresh 9-Volt batteries into the connectors.

This earcup is O-ring sealed. Be sure to carefully clean

the O-ring, the groove it resides in and the mating halvesof the earcup. Lubricate O-ring sparingly with siliconegrease only. DO NOT USE PETROLEUM JELLY.

After batteries have been installed, carefully align theearcup halves and press until a solid snap is heard. Makesure battery connector wires are well inside of the sealarea and do not get pinched on reassembly.

Maintenance:

1. Always thoroughly rinse your HEADHUNTER infresh water after using it especially in salt water.

2. Store your detector in a cool place.

3. Never store it in a manner that it will be subject tovibration or shock.
