Production Index Analysis of sow farm performance for 2019Welcome to the 2019 sow productivity and sow farm production index from the MetaFarms Analytic Team. For 2019, the dataset included over 400 sow farms representing over 1,100,000 female animals from the United States, Canada, New Zealand, Philippines, and Australia. All numbers are based on a standardized set of business logic and calculation algorithms, which allows our analysts and users to make apples-to-apples comparisons of performance across and within companies using the MetaFarms Ag Platform (MAP). New this year, you will find a Top/Bottom analysis, percentile distributions for many items shown on the Performance Monitor report, a comparison of the sow farm performance between the US and Canada, year-over-year comparison of sow farm performance from 2017 through 2019, and an analysis of sow farm performance based on farm size. This production index is also available in an interactive format HERE.

An overview of 2019Below is a graph that encompasses MetaFarms Sow Mortality % (Death and Euthanized) covering the last 8 years, which clearly shows that mortality continues to increase. On a positive note, it is interesting to see how genetic improvements have shown a steady increase in total born; whereas on the downside sow mortality continues to increase year-over-year. Sow Mortality in 2012 was 7.9% whereas in 2019

Sow Farm Productivity by Farm Size (Table 1)One of the more popular production index tables is the performance comparison broken down by sow farm size. Evaluating the performance by size strikes up many different conversation topics among our customers like: how are the sizes of my farms doing against its peers, what are the better performing farms doing that we should look into doing, and many more questions. Take a few moments to look at the differences among different sized farms sow units especially: Farrowing Rate %, Pre-weaning mortality %, and Sow Mortality %.

Year-over-Year Comparison (2016-2019) (Table 2) 2019 Pigs Weaned per Mated Female per Year (PWMFY), 26.7 was 0.9 pig increase (3.5% chg) from 2017. Pre-wean mortality % has steadily increased to 13.5%, which is the highest MetaFarms average since 2014 (14.7%). Sow death & euthanized % has increased for the 6th straight year; with a noticeable 0.7% (5.9% chg) increase over 2018, to 12.5%. On page 11, MetaFarms digs further into 2019 sow mortality. Keep in mind that sow mortality % is a combination of gilts and sows that either died or were euthanized.

Sow Farm Productivity by Country (Table 3)

Canadian sow farm production has historically beaten the U.S. in many Key Performance Indexes (KPIs), but the last 2 years have shown that this has changed. In 2019 Canadian PWMFY went unchanged from 2018 and is far off from the 2016 (26.4). Almost the opposite could be said about U.S. farms where 2019’s PWMFY of 26.8 is up 1.7 pigs from 2016 (25.1). Canadian farms have also shown a noticeable increase in Sow Mortality at 13.1% (14.9% Chg over 2018); whereas U.S. farms increased but only a modest 0.2%.

Percentile Distributions (Table 4 & 5)

Table 4 shows the percentile distributions across the MetaFarms customer database for many of the familiar numbers reported for sow farm performance. Keep in mind that with percentiles, each item is ranked independently of the others. For example, you take one line item (i.e. PWMFY), rank all the farms top to bottom on that number, and find the various percentiles. Remember that a percentile represents a single number, not an average, so for PWMFY the 90th percentile is the single number at which 90% of the sow farms (in this dataset) are below and 10% are above.

Sow Mortality Analysis for 2019The swine industry has seen a steady rise in sow mortality in recent years. The MetaFarms datasets have also shown a steady increase. In 2019, MetaFarms Sow Mortality was 12.5% whereas in 2012 the average was 7.9%. That is a 4.6% difference, and a 52% increase from 2013. The “Why” is what many companies, veterinarians, industry experts and others have been working on for some time now. MetaFarms has compiled, standardized, and analyzed those female animals that either died or were euthanized in the calendar year of 2019. Those females that were removed by being culled or transferred were not included in this analysis. If you want have your own company’s data compiled for you please contact MetaFarms here.

Sow Removals by ReasonSow removal reasons were standardized into nine (9) different categories. Below is a chart with a breakdown of each removal reason by those animals that were either euthanized or died. Percent (%) of total is independent between deaths and euthanized animals.

Sow Death Removals by ParityBelow is a chart with a breakdown by removal parity for those animals that were either euthanized or died. Percent (%) of total is independent between the two. Many experts say that a breakeven for a reproductive animal is parity 3. The chart below indicates that 51%, of the animals who died, did not make the third parity and 55.5% of the euthanized animals did not as well.

SOW ENtERpRiSE pREmium upgRadESOW ENTERPRISE is a premium upgrade to SOW within the MetaFarms’ Agriculture Platform (MAP), enabling innovative swine producers to gain complete daily visibility into their barns. Through a snapshot view of key performance metrics, managers can make timely data-driven decisions. The new program upgrade gives swine producers real-time oversight across their production system by capturing daily information through the SOW mobile application and offers robust integration with electronic sow feeders (ESFs).

mobile app

The SOW mobile application (app) was developed specifically for swine producers and the challenging environment in which they work. Data entry is reduced and simplified

with the mobile app on familiar “off-the-shelf” Android or iOS tablets–eliminating the need for specialized equipment or training. The app includes offline functionality and data validation warnings.

ESF integration Integration with Electronic Sow Feeders helps eliminate redundant data entry

while improving data accuracy. MetaFarms works directly with leading manufacturers including Nedap, AP Schauer and others for continuous improvement.

performance Snapshot

The upgrade also includes a new enhanced performance snapshot providing a variety of

metrics for tracking performance from day-to-day and week-to-week across sow units. The snapshot enables managers to see at-a-glance at how their farm is doing and react for real-time decision-making.

metaFarms’ SOW / SOW ENtERpRiSE™ p R O d u C t S H E E t

MetaFarms SOW is the next generation record keeping system for the swine industry’s leading producers to track performance, compare that performance to industry benchmarks and make data-driven management decisions. From a single-unit farm to large integrated operations, the program was designed and developed to meet the demands of modern swine production, raising the bar by leveraging technology to solve real-world inefficiencies.

Analysis of Sow Feed Intake for 2019Introduced in 2015, and back again for the fifth straight year, is a breakdown of Sow Farm Feed Intake. MetaFarms worked with nutritionists and consultants to create a detailed look at feed costs and usage. Feed intake and expenses are broken down between Gestation and Lactation feed. In addition to intake, we have also provided some cost breakdowns and graphs. This report is available now for our Sow customers with the MetaFarms Ag Platform.
