How ever, cells from a worksh eet created by Qu ickFigure Works can

be copied an d p asted into a QuickFigure Pro w orksheet, and vice-

    versa.

QuickFigure Works 1.0 has been tested on Apple eMate 300s and

MessagePad 2000s run ning N ewton 2.1. It is NO T comp atible with

    Newton 1.x or 2.0.

    Known bugs

    1. When mu ltiplying large integers within a formula, Works will

return the wrong result if the answer is greater than 536,870,912, due

to an ov erflow situation. This will not hap pen to real num bers, so if a

work around is needed, add a decimal point and zero to the number

you are m ultiplying to mak e it a real num ber.

Values in cells are alway s treated as r eal num bers, so this is only an

issue in a formula. For instance, the following formu la:

=123456789*10 wou ld r esult in an incorrect result. H owever,

=123456789.0*10 wou ld g ive the p rop er resu lt.

If the valu e 123456789 wer e enter ed into cell C2 and then =C2*10

were entered into another cell, the value wou ld be correct (since

values in cells are always treated as real num bers).

    Common Technical Questions

Will my ISP supp ort NetH opp er?

If your ISP sup port PPP or SLIP connections, you w ill be able to

dial-in and use N etHop per. You can either contact your ISP, or you

might try accessing The List, which is an ind ex of thousand s ofISPs w orldwid e.

What mod ems can I use with my N ewton?

Any Hayes compatible modem will work w ith NetHopp er and

    the Newton.

Will NetHop per sup port graph ics?

No, N etHopp er is a text-only Web brow ser. We did investigate

the possibility, and found that m ost GIFs and JPEGs on the Web

did n't tran slate well to the small, tw o-color screen. Imag es also

take much longer to dow nload.

How mu ch memory does NetHopp er require?

The app lication requ ires about 250K, and the cache size is user

defined. Keep in m ind th at most w eb pages are abou t 3-5K.

What's the d ifference between NetH opp er 1.0 and NetH opp er 2.0?

NetH opp er 1.0 utilizes a Macintosh gatew ay app lication w hich

allows multiple New tons to access the WWW throu gh one

Internet connection. NetHop per connects directly using TCP/ IP for

    the Newton.

Will NetHopp er work on an older Newton MessagePad?

No, NetH opp er only works with New ton 2.x operating system or

above. The TCP stack wh ich N etHop per requ ires in ord er to

connect to an ISP has not been d eveloped for anything less than the

    2.0 operating system.

    Other considerations

These facts are also available in the Readm e file.

Using NetHopper with a MessagePad 2000

The NetHopp er browser uses the Newton Internet Enabler to

obtain a connection to you r Internet Service Provider. Please be sure

that you have you r Internet Setup configured correctly, prior to

so, a received N etHopp er beam w ill automatically be placed in

your N etHopp er cache. A NetH opp er beam can not be viewed

and/ or routed from the In Box.

    Line drops while connecting

The phone line may d rop w hile NetH opp er is attempting a

connection. NetHopp er has no w ay of detecting the line going

dow n once a login has been established w ith the Internet Service

Provider(ISP). This also includes, hanging up due to browser

inactivity by the ISP. Problems may occur in N etHop per if the

line is dead and NetH opp er is still active. If this hap pen s,please reset your MessagePad and modem and retry a connection

    at tempt .

    NetHopp er page layout

The NetHopp er browser does customize a web p age layout for

display on th e MessagePad screens. To imp rove read ability,

NetH opp er w ill left justify all text, unless otherwise noted with

an H TML tag. How ever, images will be displayed on

screen based on the HTML alignment tags.

    Using Metricoms Ricochet modem

There are sever al versions of Ricochet ava ilable. If you hav epr oblems connecting , contact Metr icom at (408) 399-8200 or

    Software

    Operating System

This is an overview describing the software on the MessagePad 2000

    hardw are platform.

The N ewton OS 2.0 platform release forms the base of the MP 2000

software system. The N ewton OS 2.0 softwar e release is enhanced

with incremental add itions that will make up th e New ton OS 2.1

system. MP 2000specific software w ill build on the N ewton OS 2.1

software feature set and available optional modules to create anApple specificMP 2000softwar e system. All of the MP 2000specific

functionality will be implemented through APIs and features.

A general idea of the operating system componen ts and h ow they

relate to the MP 2000 hardw are is shown in th e following m odel.

The 2.0 operating system area is common to the pr evious N ewton OS.

    Telephony

Telephon y sup port in this operation system is responsible for

wireless comm un ications between the MP 2000 and remote systems.

The softwar e framework for telephon y u sed for th e MP 2000 is

imp lemented in four layers; App lication, Device Abstraction,

Protocol Stack, and dr iver. Generally, TAPI, the Teleph ony A PI,

manages the connection between the app lication and the hard ware

using th e configuration d ata base. The configuration da ta base

contains device specific profile information an d current device status.

    The framework is illustrated below.

The app lication layer prov ides the u ser interface and m akes the

app ropriate calls to the Teleph ony API (TAPI).

    TAPI (Telephony API)

TAPI provides the ap plication layer with d evice and service

indep enden t control of the telephon e connection. Service-

indep end ence is accomplished throu gh the configur ation data base

man aged by TAPI. This data base contains pr ofile information on the

sup ported service providers. Typical TAPI interaction is event-

d riven, the ap plication is notified of changes in call or device status

    through asynchronou s events.

    24/45

    SPI (Service Provider Interface)

Device-ind epend ence is accomplished b y creating a Service Provider

Interface (SPI) for each d evice and fitting that in to the TAPI

framew ork. A Service Provider Interface (SPI) is requ ired for each

han dset service. The curren t list of services, AMPS, CDPD and GSM

    each require separate SPI implementations.

    Protocol Stack and Driver

Below the TAPI, services are split into two layers, the

commu nications protocol stack an d the d river. The p rotocol stack

contains an implementa tion of the commu nications protocol used by a

service (CDPD uses TCP/ IP for instance). The driver p rovides

hard wa re control for a sp ecific service.

    Phone Management

Phon e man agemen t is divided into th e following categories; Speaker

Phon e, Call Managemen t (for making an d receiving calls through th e

integrated cell phone), and Han d Set Management. Speaker p hone

uses the internal speaker for speaker p hone ap plications.

    Call Management

Call managem ent outlines the TAPI sup port required to m ake and

receive calls. Hand Set Managem ent covers requirem ents for

displaying and exchanging hand set information on the MP 2000.

New ton 2.x software sup ports the following TAPI comman ds:

    Make_outgoing Answer_ incoming Hold

    Unhold Transfer Conference

    Drop Forward Disconnect

    Offer

    Hand Set Management

Hand Set management requires reading status data from the hand set

through the telephon e interconnect, interpreting the d ata and

displaying or m anipu lating th at d ata. The interface for control of

these functions is in HA PI (Ha nd set API). For each han dset

mod ify H API to read th e app ropriate registers on the han d set and

interpret the data in a un iform w ay for presentation by the user

    interface.

    System Hardware Control

Thereare two major usage modes, system and user. The system mode

has two sub operating mod es; development an d d iagnostic. The User

mod e had three sub operation mod es of operation: Run, Idle and

Sleep. Norm al operation takes place in the Run mod e. Idle is a power

    Power Management

    System Clock Speed

A user can manage system and battery resources of the MP 2000 by

regu lating the system clock speed. Battery life and system

perform ance is a user p reference item.Reducing th e clock speed

conserves batteries at the expense of system performance. A slider

perm its the user to choose among settings, offering lower p erformance

and maximum battery life, medium p erformance and m edium battery

life and h igh performance and redu ced battery life.

    Battery Performance

Battery performance is dep enden t on the mod e the system op erates.

The are battery life to performan ce trade-offs for each operating

mod e; maximu m battery life yields the lowest performan ce about

same performance as the MessagePad 130 (excluding software

improvem ent) and med ium performance yields medium battery life.

High performance red uces battery lifeperforman ce is abou t 2 times

    StrongArm 110 Overview

The Digital Semiconductor StrongArm -110 microprocessor (SA-110) is

a high -performan ce, low-pow er RISC m icrop rocessor. It is the latest

implementation of Advanced RISC architecture that offers

    significant advances in microprocessor design.

The SA-110 is a single chip gen eral-pu rpose, 32-bit microprocessor

    w ith 16KB of instru ction cache (Icache), 16KB of w rite-back d ata

cache (Dcache), a write buffer, and a mem ory-managem ent un it

(MMU). The five-stage pipeline d istributes tasks even ly over time to

remove bottlenecks and ensure high th roughp ut for the core logic.

The onchip MMU sup ports the conventional two-level page-table

structure w ith extensions, making it ideal for embedd ed control

systems and object-oriented systems. These features result in a high

instruction throug hp ut and efficient real-time response.

    Description of the StrongArm microprocessor

    Bus Interface Logic

The bus interface logic consist of the control logic and the ad dr ess

register. The bus interface logic controls the bu s interface, un planned

events such as interru pts, resets, and aborts; and can also enable or

disable wrapp ing of read tran sactions and m erging of write

    transactions.

The bus interface can be configured to run synchronou sly or

asynchronously to the core logic. In synchronous m ode, the bus

interface clock speed is the same as th e core clock rate d ivided b y a

progr amm able integer value from 2 to 9 for a m aximum of 66 MHz. In

asynchronous mod e the bu s interface clock can be from 1 MHz to 66

MH z, clock signal is sup plied by an external source.

    Write Buffer

The SA-110 has an 8-entry w rite buffer with each en try able to

contain from 1 byte to 16 bytes. The w rite buffer is enabled and

disabled by software; it is fur ther controlled by a b it in th e MMU

page tables. So, the MMU must be enabled before the write buffer can

be used ; disabling the w rite buffer w ill cause buffer d ata to be

    purged.

    Core Logic

The core logic fetches an d executes instr uctions u sing a five-stage

pip eline. The five stages are: fetch, d ecode, arithm etic logic unit

(ALU), cache, and w rite-back. This pipeline arran gemen t, using the

on-chip A LU, distributes tasks evenly in time an d contributes to th e

high performan ce of the core logic.

    Registers

The ARM architecture sup ports 30 general-purp ose registers, 1

program counter, and 6 status registers. There are 16 general-purpose

registers (includ ing the PC register) and 1 or 2 status registers visible

at any on e time. The pr ocessor operating mod e determines wh ich

    registers can be seen.

    Instruction Set

The core logic executes the ARM instruction set, which sup por ts

straightforward assembly language code p rogramm ing. It d oes not

dep end up on soph isticated compilers to manage complicated

instruction interdepen den ce. There are eight instruction classes in the

    instruction set

    I ns tr uc ti on T y p e C l as s

Adder and Register Two instruction classes use the on-chip ALU, barrel

shifter, and multiplier to perform high-speed

operations on the data in a bank of 16 logical (31

    physical) 32-bit registers.

Data Transfer Three instruction classes control data transfer

between memory and the registers. The classes are

optimized for flexible addressing, rapid context

switching, and swapping data.Execution Two instruction classes control execution flow and

    execution privilege level.

Privileged One instruction class accesses the privileged state

    of the SA-110.

    Memory-Management Units

The SA-110 has two memory-management units: instruction (IMMU)

and data (DMMU). Separate translation lookaside buffers (TLBs)

are imp lemented for the instruction and data streams. The TLBs each

hav e 32 entries that can each map a segment, a large page, or a smallpag e. The TLB entry rep lacement algorithm is round -robin. The d ata

TLB sup por ts both the flush-all and the flush-single-entry fun ction,

w hile the instruction TLB sup ports on ly the flush-all function.

Memory-managemen t exceptions preserve the base ad dress registers,

eliminating th e need for "fix-up" code.

    Cache

    The SA-110 has a 16KB, 32-wa y, set-associative Icache w ith 32-byte

    blocks and a 16KB, 32-way , set-associative, w rite-back Dcache w ith32-byte blocks.

    Instruction Cache

The Icache supports the flush-all-entry function, and the

replacement algorithm is round -robin within a set. The Icache can be

enabled or disabled indep endent of the memory-management

function. When m emory m anagement is disabled, the Icache control

logic considers all mem ory to be cacheable.

    Data Cache

    The w rite-back Dcache sup ports the flush-all-entry, flush-entry,

and copyback-entry fun ctions. The copyback-all function is not

provid ed in hard war e but can be provided by software. The Dcache

entries are allocated w ith read tran sactions and the entry

replacement logic uses a rou nd -robin algorithm.

    Clocks

A 3.68-MHz clock from a crystal-based clock gener ator is u sed to

sup ply externa l timing t o the SA-110; interna lly it uses a p hase-

locked loop (PLL) to multiply the frequ ency by a variable mu ltiplier

to prod uce a high-speed clock. The highspeed clock is then d ivided

internally by a configurable ratio to p rovide a system clock for

synchron ous op eration. The 3.68-MHz oscillator and PLL run

constantly in normal and idle mode.

Important information regarding Rechargeable Battery Pack

A new Rechargeab le Battery Pack comes w ithout a charge and takes

from tw o to four charge-discharge cycles to 'condition' the battery for

maximum capacity. This phenom enon, know n as passivation,

dep ends on how long the battery is on the shelf before use.

To obtain full battery life (run-time), char ge and discharg e the

battery pack several times w hen th e pack is new or after long p eriods

of storage. This will preven t false ind ications of a fully charge

(Battery Ind icator in th e Extras Drawer) w hen there is little charge

    capacity remaining on the battery.
