MAC Executive Board and the MLA Bylaws Commit-tee. Many of the changes that we are proposing will make our bylaws more consistent with the MLA Chapter Model Bylaws and give us more flexibility. Other changes have been made as a result of survey responses from former officers and committee chairs.

In accordance with the MAC bylaws, we distrib-uted this information on August 5, 2005 and es-tablished a voting dead-line of September 15, 2005. If you did not receive this information through email or via the MAC listserv, please contact me imme-diately at [email protected].

Personnel News Pat Hammond, Commu-nity Health Education Cen-ter Librarian at VCU Librar-ies, received a Profes-sional Recognition Award at the 2005 Business Meeting of the Hospital Libraries Section. Pat was recognized for her role in publishing the Hospital Librarianship column in MLA News. MAC member, Ann Sasser

Evans, reports LifePoint Hospitals, Inc. a for-profit hospital company pur-chased the hospital she works for Danville Re-gional Medical Center on July 1, 2005. A survey was sent to Vir-ginia Council of Health Science Librarian (VaCOHSL) members to asses the future of VaCOHSL. Possible op-tions for the organization include continuing as it is,

aligning with the Vir-ginia Library Association (VLA), disbanding VaCOHSL, or maintain-ing VaCOHSL and dis-banding the local con-sortia. Results of the survey will be discussed at the MAC Annual Meeting which will be held in Charlottesville, Virginia from October 3-6, 2005.

The Tompkins-McCaw Library for the Health Sciences, part of the VCU Libraries at Virginia Commonwealth Univer-sity (VCU), is conducting an inquiry into the barri-ers of accessing health information as part of an Information Rx Evaluation Project. The 9-month project is being funded by the National Library of Medicine un-der a contract (#N01-LM-1-3522) with the University of Maryland, Baltimore. Monica Le-isey, a doctoral candi-date in the VCU School of Social Work, is lead-

ing the investigation to identify and compare the barriers perceived by physicians who write information prescrip-tions for their patients to the barriers actually experienced by the re-cipients of the prescrip-tions. The inquiry is taking place at the Stony Point Women’s Health Center and will be finished in March 2006. Following the comple-tion of the Information Rx Evaluation Project, Monica Leisey will begin a 2-year Informationist

fellowship through which she will continue exploring the effective-ness of information pre-scriptions. The fellow-ship, funded by the Na-tional Library of Medi-cine, and sponsored by the Tompkins-McCaw Library, will enable Monica to learn informa-tion skills to provide health information to patients seeking such at VCU’s community health information libraries. Monica will earn practi-cal experience through staffing several of these libraries.

The fellowship also pro-vides an opportunity for Monica to research two areas of interest. First, Monica will discern the importance to patients of having an intermedi-ary with whom to con-sult when filling an infor-mation prescription. Secondly, the fellowship will provide an avenue to evaluate the effec-tiveness of the informa-tion prescription pro-gram from patients’ per-spectives.

Cana-dian born, Terry graduated from the University of Manitoba and attended Magill University in Mont-real. While there he worked in the Osler Library for the History of Medicine where he first became interested in medical history and be-gan collecting books for himself (he later became an antiquarian bookseller of note). He was Director of the Clendening Medical Library in the University of Kansas Medical Center, Lawrence, Kansas, and in 1962 went to Duke Univer-sity in Durham, North Caro-lina, as Director of the Duke University Medical

Center Library and Cura-tor of the Trent Collection of old and rare books in the history of medicine. In his early years at Duke, he was responsible for and aided in the design and creation of the Seely G. Mudd Building to house the Duke Medical Center Library. After 27 years at Duke, he retired in 1989 as Emeritus Pro-fessor of Medical Litera-ture. While at Duke he issued catalogues of his own medical and science books under the name, Old Galen Books. Upon retiring to Athens, he is-sued catalogues under the name Emeritus Books. Terry produced books in the name of two

private presses he founded, Sacrum Press and The Gazebo Press. In 1983 he gave a talk at the International Con-gress for the History of Medicine in Paris, France in which he outlined plans for the publication of The Panorama of Vesalius: A Lost Design From Titianís Studio, an important con-tribution to the fields of medicine and art, subse-quently published in 1996. In the last two years of his life, he con-ceived and published Crust Magazine. In Octo-ber 2005, an auction of select books from his col-lection will take place at Swann Auction Galleries in New York. He was a former member of the Grollier Society of

K eeping up with new resources, cool technologies, or just general health news can be daunting. Find-ing time to read articles or peruse web sites can take more time than most librarians have during the

day. RSS can help keep you on top of the latest happenings. What is RSS? RSS stands for Rich Site Summary or Really Simple Syndication. It is a text file that can contain news headlines, short summaries of new items, pictures, and even audio files. To view an RSS feed, you need an aggregator. Bloglines (http://www.bloglines.com/) is a free web-based aggregator that is easy to use and very convenient. Setting up Bloglines To use Bloglines, you will need to set up an account. The service is free! Once you have logged into the service, it is very easy to subscribe to an RSS feed.

Simply click on the Add link on the left hand side and type in the URL of the RSS feed. That’s it! Now you can browse RSS feeds for information. Also check out the Directory tab for the most subscribed to feeds. There are several library oriented feeds to be found in the list!

Some suggested feeds for keeping current Krafty Librarian – http://kraftylibrarian.blogspot.com/ Created by a medical librarian in Ohio, this site keeps up to date with the latest technology related to medical libraries. ResourceShelf DocuTicker – http://www.docuticker.com/docuticker.xml Docuticker is a daily update of new reports from government agencies, think tanks, and other groups.

Here’s your chance to amass AHIP points— contribute to MacMessages! Linda Collins relates that a “bylined contribu-tion in a newsletter” is worth one point. “Newsletter articles written as part of com-mittee responsibilities are not awarded points.” For further details refer to the Academy Point Index under “bylined contribution to a news-letter” at: www.mlanet.org/academy/points2.html#authoring. -Editor

Thanks for sharing achievements and current news from your library, or your state with your colleagues. If you have a news item from a newsletter or from your library cal-endar that is newsworthy, please send it along, in any format, to your State Reporter anytime dur-ing the two-month period before the next deadline.
