Exam Week This Week

This week, Year 10 students are undertaking their Semester exams in English, Mathematics, Science and Humanities. Later

this week most will complete their first VCE exam at the University Campus.

Year 9 students have English and Mathematics exams this week as well.

There are a number of reasons for giving students examinations in these year levels:

It helps prepare students for future similar assessments such as VCE exams, aptitude tests and entrance exams.

It gives the student and their teacher a measure of the skills they have already mastered, and what needs more work.

It helps students to take responsibility for their long-term learning. It is not sufficient to learn a skill or fact for a few

days. To have “properly” learnt something, it must still be in the long term memory for future use.

In the days after these exams, students will review how they went with their teachers, who will give them strategies on how

to approach this kind of assessment more effectively in the future, as well as what skills and knowledge they need to review.

Please encourage your students to talk about their exam experience at home; if you feel they have been unduly stressed or

otherwise affected, please contact the year level leaders for advice.

Attitudes to School Survey

We want our students to tell us what they think

Our school is conducting a survey to find out what your child thinks of our school. The Attitudes to School survey is an annual

student survey offered by the Department of Education and Training. The survey assists schools in gaining an understanding

of students' perceptions and experience of school.

Our school will use the survey results to plan programs and activities to improve your child's schooling experience.

The survey only takes 20-30 minutes to complete and occurs during your child's class time.

The survey results will be reported back to the school in Term 3. The survey results are included in the annual report.

The Department has updated the survey for 2018 to include important new measures that are known to influence

student engagement and performance.

Students privacy is our priority.

Your child’s privacy and the confidentiality of your child’s survey responses will be protected at all times. No identifiable

personal data is included in the survey response file.

Winter Uniform

As the colder weather comes along, we like to see students arriving at school warmly dressed.

We have a range of cool weather uniform options for boys and girls:

Long Navy Woven Pants

Navy Track Pants

Wool Burgundy Jumper

Navy Fleece with School Logo

Burgundy Polo

Long-sleeved navy or white skivvy/t-shirt

Kurnai Kilt for girls

Spray jackets are also available

A reminder that there is now a “hoody”- styled jumper as part of the School uniform. These look nice, are of good quality, and

are warm.

Other clothing items that may be worn but must not be visible, for example, a street wear hood from a jumper visible beneath

a school polo. This just serves to make the uniform very unattractive.

We have a variety of second hand uniform in good condition, and Lowe’s in Mid-Valley, our official uniform supplier, have

good stocks of all uniform requirements.

Students arriving out of uniform will change into freshly washed College-owned uniform for the day.

Year 7 News ……….

Uniform

As the weather starts to cool down, it is important that all students are wearing the correct uniform. If you require any

assistance with uniform items, please let me know.

Digital Thumbprint Incursion

The Year 7 students were fortunate enough to attend the Optus Digital Thumbprint

incursion last week. This program teaches the advantages of a positive online presence

in a fun and interactive way.

Protecting personal information, behaving responsibly and staying safe online is

important – especially as use of the internet, devices and social media sites increases

significantly, when going from Primary to Secondary School. All students were engaged

in the presentation and were able to gain some very important information in regards to

staying safe and positive when online.

Swimming

Permission forms for swimming (Terms 3 and 4) have been handed out to all Year 7

students. This is a compulsory part of the PE program and all students need to return

their forms as soon as possible. If the permission form has been lost/misplaced, please

let me know and I will arrange for a new one to be sent home.

Year 8 News ………. What’s coming up in Year 8!

Barefoot Bowls

Students in the Hands On Learning Program attended a community event organised by

Victoria Police recently. Students met with senior citizens and joined them in some

lunch after participating in a game of lawn bowls. All had a great day.

Camp

Preparations for camp are well underway. Remember, early payments really do make

paying for this camp easier to manage. Also, assistance can make events like this a

reality rather than a dream so give us a call if you are experiencing financial hardship

and we will try to help where we can.

Winter uniform

The weather has certainly changed! Please encourage your child to wear the appropriate winter

uniform so they can avoid the winter chill and concentrate on their learning rather than the

cold.

Swimming Program

The swimming program will commence shortly for all Year 8 boys. This is a program that builds vital

skills that relate to more than swimming alone. Playing it safe by the water and understanding

emergency first aid saves lives. Please ensure your child has a towel and bathers but be aware some

recycled garments are available if this is not possible and do not hesitate to make contact if any

problems arise.

Bags To Class

Students across the College are reminded that they should not be taking bags to classes. Many Year 9 students are having to

be reminded quite often of this, especially during Period 5. Unless your bag contains required PE gear or a laptop/device,

students should not have bags with them. Students continuing to take bags to class will be asked to return them to their

lockers and may have to make up time at lunchtime.

Semester Change Over

The Semester change over is fast approaching, which will mean Year 9 elective classes are changing soon. Students are

reminded to take this opportunity to finish off their current electives on a positive note and to make the most of the

opportunities presented to them in these classes.

Uniform

As winter sets in students are reminded to dress warmly. If required, students may wear

additional layers of clothing but must have Kurnai College clothing on the top of any other

clothing items. This is so we can easily identify our students and make sure they are safe.

Melbourne Discovery Camp

The activities and accommodation are all almost finalised for the Melbourne Discovery

Camp. Camp is from 16 – 19 October. Remember to start thinking about payment plans

if this will help students attend. Please contact our front office if you would like to discuss

or organise a payment plan.

Digital Thumbprint Incursion

Last week Year 9 students participated in an incursion focusing on managing their digital

reputation and building skills to navigate the online world. The session was engaging

and relevant and provided students with opportunities to build their awareness of how

to engage with the online world in positive and respectful ways.

Learning Behaviour Updates

Learning Behaviour Updates have been published for a while now and students are reminded to check in with Mr Bennett to

reflect on their progress. Students achieving improvements and/or scoring above 3.5 are reminded to see Mr Bennett or

another member of the Year 9 Team to receive a prize.

Devices

Year 9 students are generally doing very well with remembering to bring their devices to class every lesson. Please keep this

up. If you need to borrow a device, please do so before class. Also please remember that devices are to be used in line with

teacher instructions.

Short period Homestay families required

Kurnai College will be hosting two short term Chinese Study tours during term 3 this year

as part of our International Program. We are looking for families who would be interested

in hosting a Chinese student/s for up to a week.

While at Kurnai, the students will participate in a mix of English Language classes located

at the University Campus and immersion classes at the Junior Campuses. These classes

will be followed up by organised afternoon activities within the local area.

The Homestay is to provide a welcoming, nurturing and safe environment for young stu-dents, as it will likely be the first time these students have been out of China. If possible, it may pay to consider having two students billeted with your family making it less daunting and easier for both you and the students.

Hosting an international student is very rewarding and offers a wonderful opportunity to learn about a new culture and share our Australian way of life. This would be a great op-portunity to consider for our students who are currently studying Mandarin or have/will be participating in our trips to China.

Host families are paid a nominal fee of $30.00 per night per student, which is to assist with food, accommodation and transportation as required for students that are living with them.

The anticipated dates for these visits are:

31st July – 6th August Students from Yiting & Heyetang Middle School from Hang

Zhou (Yrs. 7 & 8)

6th August – 9th August Students from Xinhe Middle School from Hang Zhou

(Yrs. 10 & 11)

Secondary School vaccinations in 2018

The Secondary School Vaccine Program offers free vaccines to Year 7 and 10 students.

These vaccines provide protection against:

Diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis (whooping cough) – one dose for year 7 students

Human Papillomavirus (HPV) – two doses for year 7 students

Meningococcal A,C,W,Y – one dose for year 10 students

Parents/guardians of year 7 and 10 students should look out for the vaccine consent card

booklet coming home from school with your child. You need to read the information, com-

plete and return the card regardless of whether your child is being vaccinated at school.

The Latrobe City immunisation service may contact you about the Secondary School Vac-

cine Program. Schools are authorised to provide basic parent/guardian contact details to

local councils for this purpose. Contact the school by 28 February 2018 if you do not want

your contact details given to the Latrobe City immunisation service.

To learn more about the Secondary School Vaccine Program, the vaccines, the diseases

they protect against, or how you can prepare your child for vaccination, go to bet-

terhealth.vic.gov.au

Additionally, the Commonwealth government is funding vaccinations for all children under

20 years who missed scheduled vaccines. If students have missed vaccines, either in child-

hood or adolescence, and require catch-up vaccines, they should speak with their immun-

isation provider. (ie. local council or GP).

Information for Parents—Schools’ Privacy Policy

The Department has developed a new Schools' Privacy Policy and related documents for all Victorian government schools. The new Schools’ Privacy Policy will be implemented over term one of 2018 and will replace any existing privacy policies used by schools.

The Schools’ Privacy Policy informs the school community that information about students can be shared to fulfil the schools’ core functions of educating and supporting our students.

The Schools’ Privacy Policy establishes a clarified ‘need to know’ framework, where school staff share information about students with other staff who need to know as part of their role. This is consistent with Victorian privacy law.

For the detailed information, please go to:

http://www.education.vic.gov.au/Pages/School's-Privacy-Policy-information-for-parents.aspx

Whilst Kurnai College is happy to include Community Announcements in our newsletters - please understand Kurnai College is not involved in the organisations or the running of any these community events.

Calling for feedback on the Youth Space Latrobe design principles

The Youth Space Latrobe project has been underway over the past few months. Young people have discussed what it is like to live in the Valley, what issues are important and what they think is needed in the Valley to help them thrive.

Led by our Youth Core Design Team, young people came together in February 2018 to workshop what activities and ser-

vices a new youth space could provide, where the youth space should be located, and explore design concepts. Some of the students at your school were involved in this process.

These workshops led to the creation of nine design principles that will inform the creation of a new Youth Space Latrobe.

The Youth Core Design Team would love to know the community's thoughts on these principles. A short, de-identified sur-

vey has been created to describe and evaluate the design principles.

We are seeking your feedback and your support in getting this survey out to your school community.

Once the design principles have been refined, they will be presented to the Victorian Government for consideration.

Click below to start the survey or follow this link: youthspacelatrobe.typeform.com/to/oeHLEt
