Message from the Rabbi (continued from page 1)

Request from Rabbi Blatt Please keep us informed of significant events in your family life.

It is our desire to be of help and service to you in times of special

need. It is especially important that we know of those in the hospital,

and assisted living or nursing homes, so that we can offer pastoral

care and they may be included in a prayer for recovery at Shabbat

Services.

mapped out where the Sukkah would fit in our backyard. We made sure that there was enough “mingling space” inside for those who didn’t want to spend too much time outside in the heat and that the bathrooms were clearly marked. We had a police officer stationed in our driveway and one of our teenage neighbors came to check on us because they thought something had happened. It was a wonderful event. We had plenty of room and plenty of food. Our home, both our permanent house and our temporary (and very wet) sukkah, felt larger and filled with love and joy.

This year will look different, of course, but we can still invite each other in. We can still have experience of having someone in your sukkah even if they are only there virtually. It means that you’ll have a little more food on hand. Or it means that you’ll have some more space to rearrange your furniture so that it is a space for not just enjoying meals, but also for relaxing, reading and lounging. It means that you can invite an even larger virtual crowd to your table with laptops and tablets that can still use Wi-Fi from inside your permanent space. Or it means that your guest list will be minimal – just invite enough to fit one or two extra households or just your family and really enjoy that time with the physical guests you can bring in. There are so many ways to make this holiday feel special even with the limitations at hand and because of them.

Hello 5781!

I want to take a deep breath and reflect on where we have just been. I know that for

many of you there was significant apprehension as we came closer to Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. I know I was one of them. How could we not be? This had never been done before, and God willing, will never have to be done again. How on earth can you bring a 330-family congregation together both virtually AND meaningfully? The challenge was great, and the response was nothing short of phenomenal!

Now, let’s be clear, NOTHING can replace being together in person. Virtual hugs don’t feel as good as the real ones. Scrolling from page to page on your laptop to see your friends and family is not the same as having everyone together. Having people with virtual Torah Aliyot is not the same as being physically called up to the Torah. No one really knew what this was going to look like, and guess what? It was great! I am so proud of our commu-nity. Our staff, volunteers and our mem-bership showed incredible engagement and commitment to be a part of some-thing special. I am thrilled to share the numbers available as of this writing from Rosh Hashanah. With a combination of Zoom and Live Stream, we had approx-imately 280 families on Day 1. That is over 80% of our membership. On Day 2, which is notorious for a large drop off, we still had a total of almost 200 families or 64% of our membership. I am looking forward to reporting back to you next month on how we did for Yom Kippur.

B’Yachad By David Pearlman, President

October is an equally busy time at Kol Ami. Now that Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are behind us, we have Sukkot and Simchat Torah to look forward to. Again, our community must continue to find ways to come together, however we can. Our services are going to be virtual, and with the help of the Task Force and others, Rabbi is constantly looking for innovative and creative ways to bring us together. You and your family can sign up to have dinner in the sukkah, or drive by for Sim-chat Torah, or join together for Hakafot. So, although it’s not exactly “Rock the Sukkah,” which we hope will be back next year by popular demand, there are ways we can continue to provide strength to

each other. And just wait!!!!! We are hopeful that in November, we will be ready to re-open the physical building for Shabbat Services.

Yes, it is certainly a new and different world, whether it is at the end of 5780 or the beginning of 5781, but we are learning to adapt and find new ways to enrich each other’s lives. I remain so grateful to be in a position to have a positive impact on Kol Ami, and yet I am always cognizant that being a place “where Judaism and joy are one” only happens if we do it.

High Holiday Service Rehearsal

Shalom Chaverim:

By the time you read this, Kol Ami will have taken the next step in

reopening our building by having limited in-person attendance at our High Holiday services and moving closer to what we all are seeking in the future. Because of the necessary precautions that we need to follow as more congregants enter the building, our role, as Security/Safety volunteers, is more important than ever. I want to thank Jon Zimmer and Mario Rodriguez for volunteering to assist with security for minyans and High Holiday services over the past few weeks. Their understanding of our needs at this time is greatly appreciated.

You can see that we only had two volun- teers and myself for security recently and that brings me to the focus of this report. We need more members to show their love for Congregation Kol Ami by stepping up at this time of need. As we continue to slowly reopen, we would greatly appreciate a commitment of just one service or event per month from several more congregants in order to keep all of us safe and healthy in the future. If you are willing to make this commitment, please contact the Kol Ami office at 962-6338.

I also want to personally thank Amy Binder for all she has done preparing our building for the reopening, as well as the High Holidays. She has almost single handedly done all that is needed to make our building safe – from setting up the sanctuary for social distancing, installing everything required on the Bima to keep that area isolated, and purchasing all equipment needed to keep everybody and everything as sanitized as possible. She also put together the fantastic High

Holiday gift bags that many of you received recently. I do know that Amy is also looking for volunteers for house duties, so please consider helping there as well.

Finally, Phoebe and I want to wish all of you a very happy and more importantly healthy year 5781. Stay safe!

Whatever can't be used, I will give to an e-scrap recycling company for proper handling.

I donate to families/kids that are doing e-learning or are sharing devices among several kids/family members first.

Kol Ami Sisterhood

Shana tova. I hope that everyone had a meaning-ful holiday experience, even though these were different circumstances, and that you are all look-ing forward to a great

new year ahead.

I want to highlight the great activities that Sisterhood hosted in the past month.

We launched the virtual Sisterhood Fundraising Shopping Series. On several Thursday nights at 8:00 p.m., our very own Kol Ami congre-gants host a Zoom shopping event selling their products. Lisa Kagan kicked off this series with an educa-tional and fun event, The Body Shop at Home. She did a great job playing games with us and showing us her products. Jacqueline Ramirez hosted the next event and intro-duced us to the Sene-Gence makeup line. She gave us tips while her roommate gave her a makeover. Thank you to each of the vendors for participating in the fundraiser and giving us a fun evening!!

I urge everyone to attend the future scheduled Zoom shopping events; they will be fun! Jennifer Zimmer will reschedule her popular LulaRoe

clothing line shopping event. Coren Weiss is an Interior Decorator who will teach us the art of decorating our homes. Bonnie Elozory will teach us how to make Tallitot and will also sell them. Camryn Cross is an enterprising young artist who will show us how to make jewelry at home and will also have some of her lovely jewelry for sale. Thank you to Karen Schilit and Amanda Moonitz for helping me

make this shopping series successful and memorable. Please contact Sisterhood if you are interested in being a vendor at Sisterhood.Kol Ami.Tampa@ gmail.com.

Our popular virtual cooking series continues. On Sunday, September 13, Karen Borden demonstrated how to make an apple cake for Rosh Hashanah. She was super enthusiastic and a great teacher. The best part was that we had a beautiful dessert for our holiday dinner. After Karen’s cook-

When Brotherhood and Sisterhood teamed up to play virtual Bingo, we had no idea how successful it would be. We had a great number of congregants join Zoom and play. I am guessing that they wanted a chance at the fantastic gifts that each winner received. The winners were:

☺ Steve Specter won a Bombay Chair from Pier 1.

☺ Rafi Blatt won a shopping spree at Toys R Us.

☺ Cindy Korenvaes won dinner for a month at Sweet Tomatoes.

☺ Randie Specter won all the shoes she wants from Payless Shoes.

☺ Roberta Baer won fine jewelry from Charming Charlies.

☺ Alan Borden won a shopping day at Lord and Taylor.

☺ Barry Dvorchik won a Royal Caribbean cruise for his whole family anytime in October, 2020

☺ The grand prize went to Jon Zimmer. He won a free Kiddush Shabbat lunch for the entire family when Kol Ami re-opens for lunches.

Many thanks to Darren Kasenetz for sending out the Bingo cards and taking the RSVPs. Thank you to Sharon Cross for her continuous help in everything that I do. Mitch Weiss, thank you

for being the Zoom host, and special thanks to Mario Rodriguez for working with me to plan this great, fun time. We will surely do this again.

Our Sisterhood is hosting (on Zoom) a big event on Sunday, October 18, at 10:00 a.m. The Florida Woman’s League for Conservative Judaism is having their 2nd Annual Sherry Sukel (z”l) Memorial Torah Fund Day of Study “at” Congregation Kol Ami. Kol Ami is hosting this virtual program that is open to all Woman’s League sisters. Please mark your calendars and attend this event on October 18. Registration and the flyer with all the information are on the Kol Ami website, and in the ChaiLites.

This year will be one to remember. But we all belong to the Kol Ami family, and together we will stay strong. I hope that in the coming New Year, you look to become more involved in our Sisterhood. My motto is, “Bloom where your seeds are planted.”

It gives me pleasure to introduce our sister Staci Cross. Staci is married to Kevin and they have three children: Camryn (17), Abigail (15), and Hayden (14).

She is a part-time paralegal and full-time Mama. She loves her kids so much that she may be called a “Smother.” Her goal is to raise kind, happy, and compassion-ate humans. Staci is extremely passionate about her family and friends. She feels extremely lucky to have awesome parents, awesome in-laws, and awesome friends. Even in this crazy time of COVID, seeing her people is important, even if it is only hanging out in the driveway. Staci loves playing all kinds of cards and has a weekly spades game with friends. Her favorite Jewish foods are noodle kugels, chopped liver, gefilte fish, and farfel, to name a few. Staci is proud to be a Kol Ami sister because of the good that Sisterhood does for our community.

Torah Fund pin for 2020–2021: B’Yachad, TogetherThe Torah Fund theme for 2020–2021 is B’Yachad, which means ‘Together’. Wearing this pin signifies the joy of sisterhood members working together year-round to make important contributions to the Jewish community through their volunteer efforts at synagogues across the United States and Canada. Our pride in being Jewish shows in everything we do. We are high achievers in our professional and personal lives, and we accomplish even more together! Each of us is one small nugget of gold, but together our small gifts reflect and refract the light inside us, and help each other shine. Together, since 1942, the modest contributions of thousands of individuals to this grassroots fundraising effort called Torah Fund have helped to educate and train each generation of rabbis, cantors, scholars, educators, summer camp directors, chaplains, campus Jewish life staff, and committed lay leaders. These are the people who guide and teach, console and uplift our people, one soul at a time, whether in person or remotely, during these challenging times. We make this happen together. Join us!

Kol Ami Brotherhood

Shanah Tovah Umetukah! I hope these recent Days of Awe provided you with many oppor-tunities for quiet introspection, meaningful teshuvah, and spiritual renewal, despite the unusual circumstances and non-traditional services. In line with the theme of doing things in a completely new and different way (thanks

to COVID-19), we’ve got some special upcoming events for you.

Do you enjoy a good, authentic, kosher deli sandwich (and who doesn’t?), especially with the traditional sides (e.g., cole slaw, pickle)? If so, then you will certainly enjoy our twist on last year’s Steaks in the Sukkah. This Sukkot, we are having a “Sammich in the Sukkah!” On Monday, October 5th at 6:30 p.m., we will be sharing a special and fun meal in our own respective home Sukkahs (via Zoom). If you want a complete kosher sammich meal for a reasonable fee (whether you have your own Sukkah at home or not), all you have to do is go to the Brotherhood webpage (on kolami.org) and click on the pertinent RSVP but-ton, which will take you to our online Jo-El’s order form. Once there, you’ll be able to choose from various types of sandwiches (e.g., corned beef, pastrami, turkey, egg salad) and side dishes (cole slaw, potato salad or macaroni salad), and you’ll get a pick-le too (and maybe even a sweet parve surprise!). There will also be a vegetarian (and possibly gluten-free) option, if you prefer. We will have your order ready for pick-up in the north Kol Ami parking lot earlier in the day on Monday, October 5th (times to be announced). We are anticipating a great response, so be sure to RSVP and place your order early… how many sammiches do you think Jo-El’s can make in a day?

On Thursday night (8:00 p.m.), October 29th, we will be hold-ing our 3rd annual Craft Beer Tasting and Brewery Tour event (on Zoom). We will be tasting a variety of Florida-inspired and Tampa-brewed beers from Coppertail Brewing Company and will be guided through their history, brewing process, and the finer points of beer tasting by Coppertail’s Chief Operating Officer, Ken Foutch. For little more than what you’d pay for 3-4 pints at your favorite watering hole, you will be able to sample up to 5 different Coppertail beers, along with some pretzels to cleanse your palate in between brews. Once again, we will be accepting RSVPs online through the Brotherhood webpage, and distribut-ing the packaged beers earlier in the day on Thursday the 29th (times to be announced). Pick up your cold beers, take them home, and then join us on Zoom at 8:00 p.m. for a great time as we enjoy these tasty brewskies and learn all about them from Ken. It is going to be a great night, and don’t worry if you have

By Mario Rodriguez, Brotherhood President

A Brand New Day to go to work in the morning… although we may taste up to 6 beers, you certainly don’t have to finish all 6 cans!

Last, but not least, we will be holding our monthly virtual Happy Hour on Saturday, October 24th at 8:30pm (on Zoom). This time we hope to talk about Tampa Bay sports trivia, which you won’t want to miss if you are a true fan of Tampa Bay sports (Lightning, Rays, and Buccaneers). Even if you’re not a big sports fan, you will still have a good time hanging out and sharing a few laughs with your Brotherhood friends. The following morning, Sunday, October 25th at 10:15am (following Minyan), we will have our next Hearing Men’s Voices discussion group. At this moment, I am awaiting confirmation of our discussion topic (possibly on retirement planning, men’s health, or “open session,” where the group can pick the topic). Whatever the topic will be, I am sure you will find it interesting, worthwhile, and a good opportunity to learn, grow, and strengthen the bonds we share as Jewish men.

As always, I invite you to attend our next Brotherhood Board meeting on Monday, October 19th at 6:00 p.m., if you are interested in learning more about us and/or if you have any ideas, suggestions or feedback you’d like to share with us. We are always eager to hear from our members, so don’t be shy… our board meetings are almost always open to our members. In addition, I want to encourage you to get involved in your Brotherhood, attend one of our fun social events, participate in a meaningful discussion on an important topic for Jewish men, or volunteer to help out with one of our programs or service projects. We need you! You are welcome to call me (813-928-2659) or email me ([email protected]) any time if you need any information, have a question, or want to get involved. I’d love to hear from you. In the meantime, may you and your loved ones be inscribed and sealed in the Book of Life for a happy, healthy and sweet new year!

L’shalom, in brotherhood, Mario Rodriguez

Shalom Kol Ami,

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! I love the Fall. This Fall will inevitably be different than those of the past, but we will still be Jews,

and we will still celebrate all the wonders of the season with our families and friends, even if it is virtual. We have all just reached the New Year, 5781. It looked different and felt different too! Virtual Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur Junior Congregation just isn’t the same without a plate full of challah, cookies, pretzels and washing them down with delicious lemonade. One thing that has not changed – Dr. David Berger did not disappoint our Toddler-1st graders with his wonderful Young Children’s Service! Also, Youth Services would not be the same without our USYers who always do a great job with Junior Congregation! We very much appreciate the support and help from our congregants, USYers, our Religious School teachers, and Maci Morse!! Life is different, but we are still Jews and still here! Here’s to 5781 – may it be happy and healthy with a bit of sweet and salty mixed in!

This month, we hope to see everyone at our virtual Sukkot Programs. We will have Junior Congregation on Sukkot Day 1 and Day 2; Maci, our new Youth Director, will be hanging out with me and the kids ages 2nd grade-12th grade! We will also have our Virtual Pizza in the Hut: Make, Bake, and Shake! Sukkot program on Wednesday, October 7th. It is a shul-wide Pizza Bake via Zoom hosted by Kol Yeladim! We can’t wait!

SCHool SCHpielBy Jennifer Halls, Education Director

Bringing the Fall Chaggim to a close is Simchat Torah. Again, we will have Virtual Junior Congregation in the morning on Sunday, October 11th led by our USYers, and then at 4:00 p.m., we will hold our Drive-By Torah Trek Celebration in our Synagogue parking lot! While you are participating in this fun program, we will also be handing out Religious School Supplies for October and November to our Kol Yeladim families.

I know that we are in the middle of a pandemic and things are hard for every-one right now, so I especially want to thank all the parents who have helped make virtual Religious School a success. We have had nearly perfect attendance for Wednesday and Sunday School and our Saturday Shabbat School has had perfect attendance in September too! I am truly appreciative of your commit-ment to your child’s Jewish education. Todah Rabah!

The Academy at Kol Ami is off to a great start! We have had our initial meeting with students and parents, and we are excited to bring our “Out of the Box” Academy program to our post B’nai Mitzvah students. Our first Module begins on Wednesday, October 14th for our 8th-12th graders. If you have not registered for Academy and would like to attend, please register online at www.kolami.org. We hope to fill up our Zoom boxes to maximum capacity :).

I want to wish all our Kol Yeladim families a very HAPPY and HEALTHY New Year! Please reach out to us if you have any questions, comments, or concerns!

Stay safe & healthy, Jennifer Halls

Addyson Visher October 17, 2020 / 29 Tishrei 5781

Addy Visher is a 7th grade student at Hillel Academy of Tampa. She has a real passion for art and wishes that she

could be more accomplished at doing art. Addy says, “Art is a fun way to express yourself.” In addition to this hobby, Addy swims on the Carrollwood Village Swim Team to get in her exercise.

Addy considers her greatest achievement so far to be her ability to work very hard to over-come any obstacles in her way. How inspiring! The qualities she considers the most important in a friend are “someone who is kind, listens, and is always there for me.” Sounds like Addy is also a good friend to others.

Because of the Covid-19 pandemic, many of Addy’s family and friends plan to attend her Bat Mitzvah virtually, though there will be a few local people who will join her in person in the Kol Ami sanctuary. Unfortunately, because of the pandemic, Addy does not plan to have a Bat Mitzvah party. Congregation Kol Ami wishes Addy a hearty mazal tov and will be very proud to have her lead us from the bima in Shabbat services!

Shanah Tovah! With the Jewish New Year come new programs, friends, and experiences. This may mean making a new friend at a Kadima program, taking a new virtual class with Chaverim and Boneem, or even cooking a new recipe with USY. Rosh Hashana allows us to try new things and get back into the

activities we already know and love.

As the saying goes, “New Year, New Me.” With the extensive changes that we have had to make throughout our daily lives recently, we are provided with an opportunity to work on our old friendships and start new ones. Technology has become our best friend and our best form of interaction with our loved ones as 5780 comes to a close. Synagogue programs have become virtual, USY and Kadima Conventions are held through cyber-space, and email has gotten more attention than it has in years. Despite our social limitations during this time, this does not mean we should neglect our relationships with others and with ourselves.

That being said, the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism (USCJ) has introduced USYfi Fall to allow our pre-teens and teens to continue with international and regional program-ming and social events. USYfi has opened up Kadima and USY programming all over the United States – and Canada – to 5th through 12th graders with an all-access pass! For more infor-mation, or to register for USYfi Fall, please go to https://www.usy.org/myusyfifall/ or contact me at [email protected] for more information.

I have branded 5781 as “The Year of Self-Care.” I hope you all take the time to appreciate the people in your lives, make sure you are staying healthy and find things to enjoy regularly in your life. I look forward to 5781 bringing us back out in the world and back together. I hope you all have a happy, healthy, and sweet New Year.
