We would be sending you these request letters containing a format, wherein you need to provide name, address and telephone Nos. of the person in your building to whom you have spoken and who is willing to contribute his old newspapers to MESCO. Our newspaper donors are our life-line and have been with us in many of our endeavours and have been with us for decades. Remember MESCO is a secular Organization and serves the marginalized section of society without distinction of caste, creed or religion. We are launching a newspaper drive in Thane, Kalwa/Mumbra area beginning March, 2013, as one of our two vehicles which has completed seven years in the city will not be permitted to ply here, and will be sent to Thane area and a new vehicle will be needed to replace this one in the city. Dr. A. Salam Pathan, Mr. Adamji Jasdanwala, Mr. Wahid Shaikh, Mr. M. Suhail Shaikh, Dr. Nargis, Mr. Rashid Merchant and Mr. Imtaiyazur Rahman all sponsored a student under the Educational Adoption Scheme; while Dr. Nargis contributed towards 3 students’ sponsorship.

Give India

We have received a total of Rs.6,20,050/- from GiveIndia, as donations during India Giving Challenge, of which Rs.4,54,613/- are received locally and Rs.65,437/- are from foreign donors and the rest of Rs. 1 lac. is towards Awards won during the Event. It is for the first time that we stood at 9th position amongst over 130 NGOs participating in the Event; and have qualified to receive matching grant of Rs.50,000/- besides another award of Rs.50,000/- for raising over Rs.1 Lac. during the period 2nd October to 18th October, 2012.

Vocational Courses

We received a donation from Mr. P.A. Saiyed (Mr. Nadeem Saiyed) of Rs.25,000/- towards purchase of equipment for the Kausa Vocational Training Centre.

Nursery Schools

EDUCATION

The final tally as of December, 2012:Education Scholarships: School level: 1122 cases (Rs.52.72) lacs; College: 1100 cases (Rs.80.59 lacs); College (Tech): 27 cases (Rs.1.63 lacs); Education Adoption Scheme:353 cases; High Cost Education Scholarship Scheme for professional courses: 151 cases (Rs.55.25 lacs)Several programmes were held during the quarter; significant ones being: Orientation for newly inducted EAS students (7th October) Graduation Students' Get-together (21st October) Self Awareness Programme (28th November), Study Tips - How to succeed in the exams (9th December), Personality Development Camp (22nd to 25th December), EAS Milap-I & II (4th November and 2nd December respectively) when interaction took place between EAS students and their sponsors.223 students were counseled (vocational and personal) this quarter by our two counselors.

MEDICAL ASSISTANCEMedical ServicesAmounts sanctioned this year (until December), under different schemes has been as under:A total of 177 cases have been sanctioned Rs.31.32 lacs under High Cost Medical Assistance, including 64 cases operated; while a total of 122 cases were finalized under General Medical Aid, (of which 7 were surgery cases) and for which Rs.10.63 lacs sanctioned as of December, 2012.Under Life Long Dialysis, 26 cases were serviced until December, and for which 16.91 lacs have been disbursed. In addition there have been 18 cases sanctioned under Aid for 6 months Dialysis and for which an amount of Rs. 6,01,360/- lacs has been sanctioned.ClinicsThe three Mobile Clinics and two Fixed Dispensaries served a total of 20,915 patients this quarter as compared to 19,756 patients during the previous quarter. In addition, our Physiotherapy unit has been gradually serving increasing No. of patients; during the quarter the Physiotherapy Unit served 116 patients and 41 were seen by our Orthopedic, Dr. Sachin Jain.We invite Consultants who wish to use our facility, Umair Khopekar Charity Clinic at Kurla (E) to provide subsidized consultation using 2 hrs. slot from 2–8 p.m., six days a week. In this quarter, we received medicines from AmeriCares India worth Rs.2.40 lacs.A Muti-Speciality Health Camp was organized at our Umair Khopekar Charity Clinic; Kurla on 16th December, 2012, Dr. Sachin Jain and Dr. Ritesh Kumar both orthopedic, Dr. Sukhbir (Manager, MESCO Clinics) Dr. Safdar, our Physiotherapist, and Mr. Amir Thakore and Ms. Afroze (our compounders) with volunteers from Nirmala Niketan were instrumental in making the camp a great success. 52 orthopedic cases registered; 2 cases were referred for surgery, 40 required physiotherapy,14 were found to be hypertensive while 6 were detected to be diabetic.

Newspaper Donations:

We are grateful to Mr. S.S.H. Ayubi and his colleagues (staff of Central Bank of India) that we have started receiving old newspapers from the Bank's three staff quarters at Vile Parle, Thane and Belapur, each month since November, 2012.

Our Newspaper collection Team has collected Newspapers, books, magazines etc., which has brought in Rs.5.24 lacs during this quarter.

At present MESCO collects old newspapers from 47 localities in the city, central and western suburbs of Mumbai. Insha Allah we are hopeful of starting a new unit in the next two months in Thane, Kalwa, Mumbra and Navi Mumbai areas.

We appeal to our present newspaper donors, well wishers and readers to send us addresses of persons willing to donate their newspapers. You may please contact Ms. Saima on 24474356 and pass on the address and telephone No. of our prospective donor.

GENERAL AIDDuring the first half year, 13 Sewing Machines were sanctioned. During the second half year, in the first round of interviews and Trade test for grant of Sewing machines, 21 of the 23 applicants were sanctioned a sewing machine each; these and the eligible applicants who would be interviewed in February, 2013 will be allotted sewing machines in March 2013.Qurbani programme was held at Bhiwandi using funds sanctioned by Muslim Aid, UK on 28th October, 2012 and 522 packets of meat was distributed to as many families.Old clothes Distribution was organized at Star English High School, Cheetah Camp on 9th December, 2012 where11500 clothes were distributed to 823 families; another such distribution was organized at Yusuf Meherally Centre, Panvel, where 2250 clothes were distributed to 235 families on 25th December, 2012.

Our Ration Support scheme now covers 263 families with the inclusion of 12 fresh cases. We are in a position to take up a few more cases and would like to appeal to our well wishers to recommend any deserving case for Ration support they may wish to recommend by giving a note to the effect to the deserving applicant; cases will be taken up on a first come first served basis.

INSTITUTIONSCrescent English High School55 students registered for the Martial Arts Classes.14 of our students participated in the Inter-School Taekwondo competition, 3 of these each won a gold medal and a silver medal while 1 won a bronze.National Education Day was celebrated in the school on 10th November, 2012. 34 students of Std. X appeared for the National Talent Search Exams on 21st November,2012.12 students (under 14) and 7 (under 17) participated in the District Level Yoga Competition of which10 under 14 and 3 under 17 were selected and later participated at the Zonal level on 12th December, 2012.Our school was once again awarded “A” grade certificate from Maharashtra State Secondary and Higher Secondary Board of Education; our school scored 83%.10 of our students alongwith 2 teachers attended the AFMI Felicitation function at Hyderabad, our Topper of Std. X at the Board Exam in 2012, received a certificate.We will soon be commencing construction of our Pre-primary School, and hope to complete it before the commencement of the next academic year; insha-Allah; concretization of the plot is done and soon the paving would commence.

R.C. Mahim Municipal SchoolMr. Abdul Basit (AO, MCGM) who retired on 1st October, 2012 was felicitated by MESCO, on Saturday,6th October, 2012. Mr. Nisar Baig, Education Officer, MCGM was Chief Guest on the occasion.During the vacation students from Std. VIII to Std.X had coaching classes for 2 hrs. and utilized the other 2 hours for games.Of the two D.Ed. students from R.C. Mahim Municipal School, who participated in Intercollegiate Kavita Competition, Mr. Naved Ahmad Ibrahim Momin received the Second Prize. Vocational Training Centres:Our Electrician and Beautician Course completed four years while the Dress Making Course finished two years and the Computer Courses completed one year and entered its second year in October, 2012; keeping with our tradition of launching a new course each year, we have started an Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Course this October and now have the following enrolment for the different courses (each of the courses are of one year duration save a couple of computer courses): Electrician-21, Professional Beautician-40, Dress Making-43; Computer Courses (including Computer Basics, Computer Hardware & Networking, Web Designing, DTP, IT) - 66, AC and Refrigeration-15.M/s. Godrej donated 33 Beautician kits to last year's passing out students and offered as huge concession on 22 further kits for this year's batch of students. We are also grateful to M/s. Godrej for having donated several machines for the Beautician Course valued at over Rs.60,000/-.Felicitation Function for the passing out students was held at Crescent English High School Hall on 9th December, 2012; 70 students were felicitated. Fr. Victor Rebello, Director, Fr. Agnel Ashram was the Chief Guest; Mr. Aziz Mulla, Managing Trustee, Rogay Charities, Dr. Akram Tamboli, Consultant, Orthodontist, Millat Hospital and Mr. Jayawant Raut, Manager, Project & Diversification, Fr. Agnel, were the Guests of Honour.

=Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon, 20th January, 2013: MESCO will be participating for the first time in this race (Half Marathon), and has been allotted 15 bibs which have been sponsored by our well wishers. We have also been lucky to have many of our ex-students, staff and one well-wisher (who has not only sponsored but is going to run in the half marathon). We wish our runners all the best and pray that each one of them enjoys the event.

=Admissions to Crescent English High School: Admission Forms will be issued by drawing lots, as we do not wish to inconvenience our parents by queuing up before dawn or from the previous day as it happened last year. The chits for the lottery for Nursery Section will be issued on 2nd February, 2013 from 9 a.m. and strictly only until 11 a.m.

MESCO’s Admin Offices have been re-located from 4, Sayeed House, V.S. Marg, Mahim and Fund Raising Dept. located at B-01, Maklai Park, Bazar Road, Bandra West, and have now been shifted to the following addresses effective November 2012.

APPEALMESCO needs funds to buy an office. We are in our forty fifth year and still do not own any office. Currently we are spread over four rented offices, accommodating over 50 staff members overseeing both MESCO and MESCO Education Society's activities, serving 80,000 families.
