Educational Adoption Scheme, a merit cum means scholarship where all education related expenses are paid for including for Std.X & Std.XII a designated amount allowed for coaching class fees etc. Average sponsorship Rs.15,000/- p.a. only. iii. Dialysis cost, for a patient for a month is Rs.5,000/-. Rs.85,000/- only contributed every year would provide life long support for one patient including cost of dialysis, cost of other medicines and injections required. iv. Providing Ration for a year to an extremely poor family works out to Rs.15,000/- only. v. Rs.5,000/- will provide a Sewing Machine to a destitute who wants to be self reliant and support her family. We come to the end of yet another eventful thyear; we are well nigh into our 45 year; never

had we imagined that Allah would order us to shoulder so much responsibility but He has been kind to us; as we look back we notice that MESCO has grown to be an Organization supported year after year by thousands of individuals, each giving as per his capacity and aspiration, but collectively taking MESCO and MES further, serving a few more people each passing year.

We are not complacent, and would like the public at large and our esteemed donors to support us even to greater extent so that we do not turn away the many more who are calling on us for assistance. Since the new financial year has just begun, we recount the many schemes / programmes / institutions that you could directly contribute to.

LOAN REPAYMENT:

During the month under report, we have received back Rs.4.15 lacs, as repayment of the loan scholarships bringing the total loan repayment this year to Rs. 57.17 lacs. Considering that we have given out Rs.62,68,892/- as loan during the year, we should be able to turn around by next year or the following year.

Mr. Alpesh Dhudhat, a MESCOite, Support Engineer, Ericsson India Pvt Ltd., joined hands with us as a Life member. Dr. (Ms.) Rashida Labhiwala another MESCOite, Radiologist by profession, sent in her sponsorship for EAS, Dr. (Ms.) Zeenat Shamim another MESCOite, pediatrician by profession has sent in her EAS sponsorship for 2 students.

HOLDING MESCO’S HANDS

Membership - Patron & Life Members: We have had the privilege of having Mr. Akbar Khan and Mr. Sarfaraz Merchant as Patron members and Ms. Tehseen Shaikh, Mr. Mohammed Asif, Mr. Niyaz Ahmed Wadekar, Mrs. Yasmina Ismail Khalpey, Mr. Ishaq Yunus Shaikh all of whom joined hands as Life Members during this quarter.

Donation towards Crescent School:An amount of Rs. 39,20,000/- was received during this quarter towards Crescent School Project which includes Rs.25 lacs from M/s. Kalsekar Educational Trust and Rs. 4,50,000/- from Maulana Azad Education Foundation.

Corpus Donation:During this quarter we have received donation towards the Corpus from Dr. Qais & Dr. (Mrs.) Tasneem Contractor, Mr. Irshad Nooruddin, Mr. Moorad Fazalbhoy, Mr. Jehangir T. Nagree and Ms. Shakera J. Nagree.

Zakat:Euro Charities has contributed Rs.10 lacs towards Educational Aid during this quarter.We received another Rs. 40 lacs towards Medical assistance and Rs.60 lacs for education support during the quarter.

HCES:During this quarter, we have received sponsorship towards High Cost Education Scholarship for one student each from Dr. (Mrs.) Zeni Shaikh, Ms. Aneesa Parker, Mr. Adamji Jasdanwala; while Mr. Moiz Miyajiwala has contributed towards sponsorship of two students.

SPONSORSHIPS:

Mobile Clinic Sponsorship

Mr. Tanveer Khalfay contributed Rs. One lac towards sponsorship of the Kurla Dispensary during this quarter.

Sponsorship for Sewing Machines:

We have received sponsorships for 5 sewing machines during the quarter.

Educational Adoption Scheme: We received EAS sponsorship from 25 well wishers for 28 students during this quarter thus bringing the total No. of students sponsored this year to 320 (of which 43 are being supported through Corpus donations) of the 346 under the scheme during this year.

Ration Sponsorship: In addition to the support from two of our main donors we have received sponsorship from 11 others during this year.

Interest Amount: We received Rs. 53,461/- as interest amount from 8 well wishers during this quarter bringing the total amount of interest donation to Rs. 1,78,330/- during this year.

EDUCATION:Top Ranking Students' Felicitation Function was held on Saturday, 7th January, 2012, when 78 students were felicitated; (Mrs. Abeda Inamdar (Educationist & Senate Member, Pune University) was the Chief Guest, while several dignitaries, including Fr. Deniz, Dr. Nakadar, Mr. Ali Quraishi, Dr. Tajuddin, Ms. Zahabiya Officewala, Ms. Smita Kudwa, Mr. A. Hamid Nathani, Dr. Aslam Abdullah) in the presence of 54 guests.

“Study Tips”, a guidance programme for our students (Std. Xth and XIIth) was held on Saturday, 28th January 2012; the session was taken by Ms. Anisa Lakhpatwala, Sr. Teacher at St. Agnes High School & Head of Dept. of Maths and Mr. Wahid Shaikh (Sub-Committee Member). Total 56 students attended the same.

68 students of R.C. Mahim Municipal School drawn from different levels (secondary until degree) were counseled and a seminar for Std. X students was held on 21st February, 2012.

Under the EA (School) we have serviced 999 cases, while under EA (College) we have serviced 709 cases.

EA (College Level) Tech. 15 students were provided scholarships.

Under EAS we have covered 346 students; while under HCES, we have provided scholarships to 187 students.

MEDICAL:Rs. 32.85 lacs were disbursed under High Cost Medical Assistance (HCMA) to 174 cases and 239 cases were sanctioned Rs.13.2 lacs under General Medical Aid (GMA) till date.A total of Rs.9,06,070/- has been disbursed to 31 patients during this year for 6 months Dialysis.We are going to launch our Life-long Dialysis programme from April, 2012. We have reviewed 32 cases (from out of 112 cases serviced so far in 6 years, who are in the age group 15-45 years), and would be in a position to provide support to about 25 cases.

CLINICS:This month there has been a substantial increase in the attendance of patients at our Physiotherapy Unit, 126 patients during the current month as compared to 60 in the previous month.An Eye Check-up Camp was organized on 29th January, 2012 at Kurla Mobile Clinic and another on 11th March 2012 at Malad Mobile Clinic.We have serviced a total of 22038 patients this quarter (January-March 2012) with the help of the three mobile clinics and 2 fixed dispensaries.We are in the process of finalizing a tie up with a suitable lab at Kurla; similarly we want to use the physiotherapy cabin in the second shift to be used by consultants / specialists to provide specialist opinion at a subsidised rate for our poor patients.

RC MAHIM MUN.SCHOOL:On 11th January, 2012, Inter-college Sports of D.Ed. Colleges was held at the University grounds in which 17 of our students participated. One of our students, Mr. Wasim Shaikh got the First prize in the Long Jump event.A career guidance lecture for S.S.C. students was conducted by Mrs. Sharmila, Asst. Education Counsellor, MESCO on 21st February, 2012.Mr. Mubarak Kapdi, well known speaker and career guidance expert took a session on Personality Development for the D.Ed. students.

GENERAL AID:Sewing Machines: A total of 20 Sewing machines were given out in the first half of this year; Sewing machine trade test was held at Dharavi Nursery School (through the day) on 26th February, 2012; of the 49 applicants, 40 were found to be eligible and these were given their sewing machines on 18th March, 2012 at the hands of

Chief Guest, Mr. Abdur Razzak Memon, Trustee of Bawani Tech. Institute, and other Guests including Dr. Ishtiyaque Shekhani, Ms. Tasneem Khopekar, Mrs. Zubeida Dawawala, Ms. Saira Nainar, Ms. Rizwana Ansari and Mr. Rashid Merchant. We have distributed 60 sewing machines during this year, however, we have received sponsorship for 66 Sewing machines (including 5 carried over from the previous year).

We have received survey reports of 100 sewing machines distributed over the last 5 years; all were observed to be using the machines; (5 for own household stitching, 80 use it for stitching clothes of people from the area; 15 are getting cut clothes from garment manufacturers while none have started their own garment business). 5 families are earning upto Rs.4,500/- per month; 25 families are earning Rs.2,000/- to Rs.3,000/- p.m.; 35 families are earning between Rs.1,000/- to Rs.2,000/- p.m.; 30 families are earning between Rs.500/- to Rs.1,000/- p.m. and supplementing their family income.

Ration Support: We had issued 80 new forms and after interview we selected 56; adding the continuing Nos. we now have 252 on rolls.

Old Clothes were distributed from Asra Foundation's School at Kalyan; 927 families received a total of 13,400 clothes.

We are grateful to Mr. Saad Kazi and his team from Asra Foundation for their support.

VOCATIONAL TRAINING CENTRESKausa Centre: On 1st January, 2012 the First Alumini Meet of our past batch of Electrician & Beautician was held at Crescent English High School; it was attended by 18 students from the Electrician batch and 16 students of the Beautician batch. Mr. Parag Gupta, Director, DOW Chemicals, Mr. Jaywant Raut, Manager (Projects & Diversification), Father. Agnel Institutions were Guests.

This year we have 30 students enrolled for the Electrician, 38 students for the Advanced Beautician, 36 for the Dress making & Fashion Designing (all one year courses) and 53 students for the various (Computer Basics, Hardware & Networking, IT, Web Designing) Computer Courses.

Our Beautician Class students put up a Mehndi Application stall in the school compound on Annual Day of Crescent English High School (held on 14th January, 2012).

Dharavi Centre: 3rd batch of the 2 month (5 days a week) short term course of Tailoring and another for Beautician was conducted at Dharavi from 16th January to 15th March, 2012. 14 enrolled for the former and 19 for the latter.

NURSERY SCHOOLS: (Angels' Paradise)

Health Check-up of students of all our Nursery schools was conducted by Dr. C. Tripathi, Chief Medical Officer from 16th until 24th January, 2012.

Sports Day was held on 18th February, 2012 at our Kurla Nursery School.Teaching aids exhibition held on 23rd February, 2012 at Govandi-II Nursery School, was well attended and was inaugurated by Ms. Sakharkar Shagufta, HM of Rose English Primary School.

Ms. Zaheda Shaikh, Resource Teacher attended a workshop on 4th and 11th February on “Phonics” organised by Asociation for Early Childhood Education & Development (AECED) at Gandhi Shikshan Kendra.

Annual Day of the Nursery Schools was held on 24th March, 2012 at Mancherji E. Joshi Hall, Dadar. Fr. Bernard Fernandes, Principal, St. Joseph High School, Wadala was the Chief Guest and Sr. Thelma, Principal Apostolic Carmel Convent, Bandra, Fr. Magi Murzello, Principal, St. Andrews High School Bandra attended as Guests of Honour.

CRESCENT ENGLISH HIGH SCHOOL:Annual Day was held on 14th January, 2012 for the Primary Section (I-IV) and on 15th January, 2012 for Class V-X. Mr. Ali Qureishi, Chief Patron of the school was the Chief Guest on the second day, while Principals of several schools of the area were guests on 14th Jan. 2012.

Annual Sports meet was held on 29th January; Mr. C.L. Ram, Head of Sports, New Horizon Schools and Mr. Shaikh Rahil, Ranji & IPL player were respectively the Chief Guest and Guest of Honour.

The school had sent up a few students for Elementary & Intermediate Drawing Examinations and we are happy to report that of 8 that took the Intermediate, one scored an A, another a B and the remaining got a C grade; of the 6 that appeared for the Elementary Grade, one scored a B while the remaining got a C grade.

5 of our students from Std.VII and VIII participated in drawing competitions and 15 students from Std. VI, VII and VIII attended a workshop, “Do it Yourself”. Both events were organised by Nehru Science Centre to celebrate World Water Day on 22nd March, 2012.

Dr. Adnan Shaikh recently completed his M.S. and has joined Kalsekar Hospital as Clinical Associate in the Surgery Dept.

Mohammed Danish Khan, recently completed his BDS reminisces, “I was just a seed when I came to MESCO. MESCO sowed, watered and developed me into a tree; without MESCO I would have whithered away. Thank you MESCO for always being there, for my support”.

FORTHCOMING EVENTS

=Career Seminars for our EAS & EA students who have appeared for Std. X and Std. XII exams will be held at Crescent English High School Hall on 5th and 14th April, respectively.

=English Remedial Classes will be held from 1st April, 2012 for our (vernacular medium) EAS students alongwith those of R.C. Mahim school, all who appeared for their Std. X exams in March, 2012.

=An eye camp is proposed to be conducted at Kausa on 8th April, 2012.

VISITORS

4Ms. Mary Ellen, Executive Director of Atma visited us on 28th January 2012 with regards to preparing of brochures, newsletters etc.

4Rangoonwala Foundation, India Trust had requested and sent a team of 10 (2 Programme Officers and 8 Health Workers) from one of their partner Organization from Ahmedabad, namely Sanchetna alongwith their Field Co-ordinator and staff from their Accounts Dept. to visit our Dispensaries, Crescent School and Vocational Training Centre on 21st March, 2012. The team was very appreciative of our work; we have been offered a similar trip for our team to any of RF (IT) field partners.

4AmeriCares India Director, Resource Acquisition, Mr. Mathan Varkey visited our office on Friday, 30th March, and wanted to know how we felt about our association with AmeriCares, India. AmeriCares India has been kind enough to provide free medicines for our clinics over the last 2 years and more.

4Dr. Baldev Singh, Asstt. Director, Micro Small & Medium Enterprises visited our MESCO’s Vocational Training Centre and took a session on how to obtain loan from Banks and Govt. for setting up self business and small industry.
