VOLUNTEERSVolunteers are the backbone of our service provision and calculations show that in total we receive some 8676 volunteer hours per annum. This includes the Home Support befrienders, the volunteer drivers, the escorts, the volunteers at the day centres and clubs. If we take this a step further and take the minimum wage into account we can value all this generosity at something like £48,000 per annum. What an unbelievable amount of generosity if you quantify it in this way, we would like to give a huge thank you to all our volunteers for their community spirit and valued addition to our organisation it really is a massive contribution to the lives of our members.

INFORMATION & ADVICE SERVICE:This service provides information on many issues relating to older people and their carers. It is mainly a telephone service and information on home help, housing needs, residential homes and other welfare benefits is given and the enquirers are sign posted to the right agencies and the statutory authorities.

The office for information and Advice is based at the Merstham Centre and despite the change of number is going very well. We work very closely with the Department of Work and Pensions in ensuring that our local residents receive as much valuable information in increasing their income wherever we can. This service and the added bonus of having a close working relationship with our local independent living support worker is something which we have found other organisations do not have and appreciate how lucky we are in having such support.

The office receives nearly 3000 calls and visitors a year and the number of I/A enquiries made by the public to Merstham and Redhill Centres averages out at around 60 to 70 calls a week, still increasing year on year. The use of both the Day Centre Phone line and the Office line are on continuous usage dealing with every type of information, assistance, support and advice as well as booking the Social outings, Theatre bookings, river trips, shopping trips and trips out on the minibus.

AGE CONCERN SERVICES AND ACTIVITIES

Page 10: Merstham, Redhill & Reigate

MEADVALE FRIENDSHIP CLUBOpen on Tuesday Mornings 10.00a.m. to 12 noon

We continued to provide transport for the members to the club regularly last year.

One of our volunteers now runs the Meadvale Friendship Club, assisted by her husband who is one of our minibus drivers and also helps with club activities between the pick up and return journeys, after which he runs the shopping trips on Tuesday afternoons.

TRANSPORTThe transport based services are very much in demand. Most of our other services, especially the majority of our Day Centre/Club members also rely on our two minibuses for transport.

Although there has been a shortage of volunteer drivers & escorts we are able to maintain an effective transport service to our Day Centres and Clubs. Our volunteer drivers often offer a helping hand and carry out more than their regular duties to meet the increasing demand for transport.

Including the Shopping Trips & Social Outings and the Shopping Trips for the Frail Services, the two minibuses have done a total of around 18000 miles and carried a total of nearly 6000 passengers a year. The daily day centre/ club runs may be only 10 to 15 miles a journey, whereas the Shopping Trips & Social Outings can be as much as 150 miles round trip. SHOPPING TRIPS / SOCIAL OUTINGSThis service has now become one of our regular core services. We organise two outings weekly for the benefit of local older residents. Pub Lunches, trips to the south coast, garden centres, places of interest and a day trip to France are among the outings that are on demand. After consulting our members, we have introduced a small charge for the service;; a contribution to administration and minibus costs, which has been especially important with the ever increasing fuel and other costs associated with transport.

The service has since become very popular. We are steadily increasing the number of outings we do each year.

MERSTHAM CENTRE Open Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday 9.30a.m. to 3.30p.m.

The Merstham Centre is open three days a week with a plan to re-start the tea dances at some time in the future due to request from the members. We have already have Arts and crafts, Brain exercises and music and movement through working with the WEA (workers education association).

Fit as A Fiddle the Age Concern Surrey initiative have provided us with the New Age Kurling Kits and after the initial practice the games are becoming more competitive with local school and college students joining in. Eventually we hope to start an inter-house league for our Centres and Clubs

Meals are served every day and we will be looking in to raising funds to enable the up-grading of our kitchen, this is a long term project but knowing the staff as I do and having some ideas on utilising the local catering colleges we have positive hopes at present.

REDHILL CENTREOpen Tuesdays and Thursdays at present

Open two days a week with a provision of a Chiropodist, bookable through the local G.P’s, Arts and crafts provided again by the WEA. We wish to be able to open three days a week and add Wednesday to the opening days and are looking to raise funds to enable us to carry out this desire.

HOME SUPPORT SERVICEAll our befriending volunteers are CRB checked. Our organization is a part of the Age Concern England system where by three of us, the Chief Officer, the Home Support Manager and the Administration secretary interview and induce the volunteers to our services. This service is probably one of the most needed and rewarding, where older members of our community who would otherwise find themselves isolated and lonely, have regular befrienders who visit and add to these people’s lives and independence.

HARD OF HEARING SERVICEThis service is run by volunteers;; Hearing aid batteries and tubing are renewed and maintained. Individual support and information is given.Leaflets are regularly sent to hospitals' audiology departments.

We were able to continue this service at the following venues:

Merstham Centre (Merstham): Tuesday, Wednesday and FridaysThe Redhill Centre: Tuesdays and Thursday mornings

At our Merstham office the Information & Advice staff also keep a supply of hearing aid batteries and tubing. They welcome many older people who come to the office for batteries

outside the Merstham Centre opening hours and are able to help them.

HOLIDAYSWe continue to offer holidays to the residents of the Borough through “Various travel Groups”. In July last year the holiday booked to The Isle of Wight and this year the Turkey and Tinsel holiday is to Bournemouth, with future holidays looking at Great Yarmouth and many more.

SHOPPING TRIPS FOR THE FRAIL & HOUSEBOUNDOnce a month we provide a minibus to take the more frail and housebound of our members to do their shopping. We go to a variety of different supermarkets so that we can offer choice to our members and we also try to blend in an element of a day trip out somewhere nice. On returning from the shopping trip our driver is always more than happy to help you with your bags inside your home to save you carrying them. Due to the already high and everincreasing demand for this service it is not always possible to accommodate for everybody. We work with other organisations to try and provide escorts and ensure that all people that need to do their shopping can do it in comfort and on a one to one basis if needed.
