This school year the Southwest Star Concept School is hosting

several exchange students: Malin Klemmetsen from Norway, Lara Peukert

from Germany, Mohammed Dayan Yudhistra from Indonesia, Ana Lima

from Mexico, and Gaia Betti from Italy.

Since it’s almost Christmas, and the latest snow and all the lights on the

houses have made everything more Christmassy, The Student Concept has

interviewed our school’s international students to know how they celebrate

Christmas since every different country has its own way and traditions.

In Italy all family members usually gather and spend Christmas

Eve, on December 24, and Christmas Day, December 25, together. Food is

the major component of Christmas holidays, as much as it is during

Thanksgiving in the U.S. Every different Italian region has its own typical

Christmas dish. Fish is almost present in every Christmas Eve menu. Little

kids have to wait until dinner is over to open their presents; and on the 25th

morning Santa’s presents, if they’re good kids, are under the Christmas tree.

It’s popular to have both the Christmas tree and the Nativy scene, families

like Gaia’s buy every year a new character to add to the Nativity scene in

order to have a very big composition with moving elements like the baker

and water running in the mill. On the 25th night people usually go over to

friends’ house to play bingo or card games. Another important day is

December 26; it’s called “Santo Stefano,” that would be “Saint Stephen."

It’s a national holiday together with Christmas and people usually spend the

day with relatives and friends. Christmas break lasts until the 6th of

December, the Epiphany. During the night between January 5 and 6, an old

and ugly lady whose Italian name is ‘Befana’, goes to visit little kids' houses

riding her broom. Every kid prepares a big sock, and hangs it somewhere in

the house, usually over the fireplace. She fills the socks with candies if the

kids behaved well, with sweet fake pieces of coal for the naughty ones.

In Mexico Christmas celebrations start on the 16th of December,

for nine days children perform the 'Posada' processions, which is the

Spanish word for Inn or Lodging. These celebrate the part of Christmas

story where Joseph and Mary looked for a room in an Inn. Children call at

the houses of friends and neighbors and sing a song about Joseph and Mary

asking for a room in the house. If the children are told that there is no room,

they must go away; if there's room, they have a party with food, games and

fireworks. Each night a different house holds the Posada party.

“The most played game at Posada parties is Pinata. It was my favorite one

when I was a kid,” Lima exclaimed. She usually spends Christmas day with

her family; they eat turkey, cranberry, pasta, and make a sort of gifts

exchange.

Unlike the United States, children get their presents at Epiphany,

also known as 'El Dia de los Reyes', The Day of The Three Kings who bring

the presents. It's traditional to eat a special cake called 'Rosca de Reyes', a

figure of a Baby Jesus is hidden inside the cake; whoever finds it is the

'Godparent' of Jesus for that year.

As for Germany, Peukert explained that Christmas starts with the

Advent calendars which are purchased at the beginning of December. As

well as the traditional one made of cardboard that is used in many countries,

there are ones made out of a wreath of Fir tree branches with 24 decorated

boxes or bags hanging from it. Each box has a little present or kind of candy

in it.

One very important element of the German Christmas is the tree,

decorated with glass ornaments.

Santa Claus brings the presents on December 24th, and before

Christmas‘der Nikolaus’ brings some small gifts, such as sweets and

chocolate, on December 6th. He comes in the night during the 5th and the 6th,

and puts the presents into the shoes of the children, who usually place them

by their doors on the previous evening. On every German table there’s carp

or goose for the main Christmas meal, but the typical delicacy is called

Stollen, fruited yeast bread.

Moving up in Northern Europe, Norway celebrates Christmas in a

similar way to Germany. “It’s my favorite holiday” Klemmesten started off.

“The celebrations start on December 1st.”

On that day, children and chocolate lovers get their Advent calendars with

chocolates or little presents for every day until Christmas Eve. The

Klemmetsen family tradition is to wake up early on the 24th to watch all

together Christmas movies that are always showed on that day. “It’s worth

the early waking up; it makes me feel the Christmas atmosphere so much,”

Klemmesten explained. Christmas is celebrated on Christmas Eve with one

side of the family; relatives gather in the afternoon to spend some time

together and then have dinner. It’s traditional to eat a dish similar to steak

with a crispy crust on the top and other meat recipes made with lamb or

turkey.

After dinner, a little kid picks random presents under the tree and gives them

to the other members of the family. Christmas Day is spent with the other

side of the family; if they didn’t get to open their presents before, they

would open them.

Despite the religion leanings, Indonesia is one Muslim country

where Christmas is greatly celebrated. Before ‘Eid Mubarak or Idul Fitri’,

what Christmas is called in Indonesian, Indonesian people fast for thirty

days. When they are done with fasting, they have a family dinner followed

by a present exchange. They usually eat Indonesian food such as gulai, kare,

and soto, a kind of soup. Older relatives, who already have a job, usually

give money to the younger members of the family.

This is how the SSC exchange students celebrate their Christmas; hopefully

they will enjoy the American Christmas with their host families.

HBC hands Wildcats second loss of season

By: Mykil Vonk & Christian Mariscal

The Wildcat boys’ basketball team traveled to Hills

Beaver Creek last Tuesday 11th to take on the tough

competition of HBC. The Patriots handed the Wildcats their

second loss of the season with a final score of 77-62. Jeff

Sandbulte lead Hills Beaver Creek with 21 points and also

pulled down 9 rebounds, while Andrew Kramer was the star for

the Cats with 17 points, while Zach Schumacher had 13 points

along with 8 boards.

We interviewed Aaron Fest about the game Tuesday. We asked

him what needs to get better for them to start getting the wins.

He said, “We need to play better defense than we are; the

offense also needs to get better.” Fest also scored 8 points in

Tuesday’s game. Fest was also quoted, “Be there on Thursday

as we take on the Wolverines.” Soto was asked what the game

plan is for Thursday. He said, “We need to pressure Carter

Kirk, their big center, and need to pressure the outside

shooters.” Soto continued, “It will be a good game, and we are

looking to get revenge from last year when they beat us out of

the playoffs.”

On December 20th the Wildcats are hosting their rival Mountain

Lake Area here in Okabena; game time is 7 PM. Come out and

support the Wildcats as its going to be a wild game. There is

also going to be a pork burger feed meal that includes chips and

water for $5; they will be serving from 5 PM. Thursday until

they are gone.

The Wildcats are also hosting the Candy Cane Classic this year;

there will be games Friday and Saturday. Friday’s games will

be SWU vs. Lincoln High and also WWG vs. Lakeview. When

Matthew Soto was asked how he felt going into the tournament

as defending champs, he replied, “We are feeling pretty good

and have a really good chance of winning.” Games start Friday

at 3:30 with two B-Squad games, and the two varsity games to

follow. On Saturday, games start at noon.

Cold hands, warm hearts

By Kristin Liepold

There is happiness in the air during Christmas time; therefore

people feel the desire to give back to the less fortunate in their community.

Organizations that help give food, money, and clothing to people who need

it the most tend to be especially busy during the Christmas season.

In the Heron Lake-Okabena area, the food shelf is one of the

largest and most important of these organizations. The food shelf collects

non-perishable food items and basic daily care items. The food shelf

receives donations from the area schools during Christmas time.

The Salvation Army is a well organized charity that helps

thousands of people nation-wide. The Salvation Army is there when disaster

strikes, when an individual needs rehabilitation, when housing and homeless

services are needed, and when providing for youth camps. The Salvation

Army is vigorous during the Christmas season with their red kettles.

Millions of dollars is donated each year to aid needy families, seniors, and

the homeless.

The American Red Cross is the nation’s largest blood collection

organization, supplying more than forty percent of the blood and blood

products used in our country. It also instantly helps with disaster relief such

as hurricanes, floods, and tornadoes. When tragedy threatens or strikes, the

Red Cross provides shelter, food, and emotional health services to address

basic human needs.

Catholic Charities USA is an organization much like the rest.

They concentrate on helping people cope with stressful family situations so

that children are provided with a loving family. They also help women with

adoptions, react to natural disasters, and help keep America out of poverty.

Children’s Fund is an international organization in which a person

can sponsor an individual child living in poverty. The money that this

sponsor contributes will go to a child to provide him/her with daily health

needs like food, clothing, and an education.

There are numerous organizations right around the corner that are

willing to be there when the time is right. There is an exceedingly high need

for people to donate their time and money to these charities.

Drought in Minnesota continues, even with snowfall

By: Ben Peter

With all the snow dumped on parts of Minnesota, it seems unreal to think more than 80 percent

of the state is still in a severe or extreme drought. Because the ground is frozen, most of the snow will run

off into rivers and lakes next spring, which does little for the dry soil, climatologists say.

Minnesota's drought has taken a toll on much of the state from blazing wildfires to deteriorating

crops. The drought conditions have also reduced food sources for many animals. “Water is essential to

our economy, our natural resources, and our quality of life,” said Tom Landwehr, DNR commissioner.

“We are in the second year of a drought, and it is time for all of us to take water conservation more

seriously.”

DNR officials say that declining groundwater supplies can take many years to bounce back

after a drought, even when the surface waters appear to have recovered.

Editorial-Let Earth receive her King

By: Kristin Liepold

Some kids don’t know what the true message of Christmas really

is; consequently, they are only aroused to see presents under the tree, rather

than celebrating the birth of our King.

It is Christmas time. There is white, fluffy snow on the ground,

Christmas music is playing, and families are gathering (usually a good

thing). Christmas is not the story of Santa Claus, the reindeer, or the elves. It

is the miracle of the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Hopefully older people know the true meaning of Christmas, but

some kids don’t. Kids focus all year on behaving because they hope that

Santa will bring them huge presents and stocking stuffers, rather than a

piece of coal (at least I did). Youngsters enjoy gathering at Grandma’s

house to play with cousins, devour delicious food, and open more presents.

Santa Claus is not the only detail of Christmas to get excited for. It doesn’t

take much for parents to sit down with a child and tell them of Jesus’s birth.

The Christmas story has been told, believed, and cherished for

centuries. "The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and

they will call him Immanuel, which means God with us," the Lord said

through a prophet Isaiah. The night Jesus was born, the shepherds were told

by the angels to find the babe, wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a

manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.

And the angel said unto them, “Fear not: for, behold, I bring you

good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born

this day in the city of David, a Savior, which is Christ the Lord. And this

shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the Babe wrapped in swaddling

clothes, lying in a manger.” And suddenly there was with the angel a

multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, “Glory to God in

the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.” Luke 2:10-15

I’m not saying that people should not give an abundance of gifts,

decide against carrying out the tradition of opening them on Christmas

morning, or that we shouldn’t keep the children excited for Santa Claus. I

want to express that the most important reason for Christmas is to celebrate

of the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ!

Joy to the World, the Lord is come!

Let earth receive her King!

Doomsday December 21, 2012

By Walker Crocker

There have been many theories about the world ending a couple days from now. Some say that

a planet called Nibiru is set to have a collision course with Earth. The original date for this catastrophe

was May 2003, but when this apparent disaster did not occur, they moved the date in relativity to the end

of the Mayan calendar, hence doomsday December 21, 2012.

Blackouts on earth have also been predicted by a lot of people on the 23rd or 25th of December.

There is no such evidence that suggests these blackouts will occur due to planetary alignment. Even if the

planets did align, it would have no impact on earth.

The polar shift theory has some theorists worried about a reversal in the direction the earth

rotates. As far as we know, a reversal of our planet is impossible. Although continents have been drifting

for millions of years, it negates the theory of polar shift. Magnetic fields do shift irregularly, but studies

have shown that it has no effect on living organisms on Earth.

Giant solar storms have been feared by some believers in the 2012 disasters. Solar activity has

a cycle, and that cycle peaks every eleven years. The peaks of those storms have only hindered our

satellite communications so there is really no threat due to solar storms.

It is most unlikely for the world to end anytime soon.

Top Five most anticipated games for 2013

5. Dead Space 3

One of the strongest new franchises from the past five years, Dead Space is

known for its terrifying, heart pumping jump-scares from seemingly dead

bodies. Dead Space 2 upped the action of formerly silent protagonist, Isaac

Clarke, plus more character. But that’s nothing compared to the updates

coming for Dead Space 3. Instead of taking place in some beaten up space

craft, like where they always take place, Dead Space 3 moves Clarke in

search for alien structures known as Markers, to a frozen surface of the

planet Tao Volantis. Clarke will once again be hunting down atrocious

looking reanimated corpses, known as Necromorphs. Dead Space 3 is set to

be released on February 8, 2013. (Photo credits go to EA)

4. Watch Dogs

Watch Dogs has nothing to do with dogs. You’ll actually be roaming near-

future city streets as the suspicious tech-genius Aiden Pearce. Rather then

causing commotion with guns and destroying things with high powered

floating vehicles, you’ll be using Aiden’s mastery over the technological

domain to wreak havoc upon those who want to mess with you. The game is

set an alternate reality version of Chicago, Illinois, which is one of the many

cities to feature a super computer known as “CTOS” (Central Operating

System). The system controls almost every piece of technology in the city

and contains info on all the city’s residents. In this game’s universe, The

Northeast Black-out of 2003 was caused by a hacker, prompting the

development of CTOS. The date of release is yet to be announced, and a

rating has not been given. (Photo credits go to Ubisoft)

3. The Last of Us

The Last of US is an upcoming post-apocalyptic action-adventure game. The

game itself has an action-film feel to it, with a desperate setting, where what

remains of human race is struggling to survive. You play as Joel, a survivor

who remembers society before the fall. With him is a young girl who has

never known a world that wasn’t infested with flesh-eating monsters. This

date of this game is still to be announced, it also has not been rated. (Photo

credits go to Naughty Dog)

2. Grand Theft Auto V

Whether you’re in a shoot out, or causing the shoot out, stealing cars out of

the blue, or provoking the entire military to come after you, Grand Theft

Auto V is your game to buy. As hard as it might be to believe for those that

have played the Grand Theft Auto games, by spring of 2013 it will have

been 5 years since the last installment of Grand Theft Auto. Making another

entry of the trilogy is long overdue. After a few years off, Rockstar, the

producers of Grand Theft Auto, is returning to the series that made it famous

with gamers and famous with politicians as well. The game takes place in

Los Santos, which in the real life is known as Los Angeles. Grand Theft

Auto V promises big changes for the series. This game is set to be released

in the spring of 2013, and is rated “M” for mature. (Photo credits go to

Rockstar).

1.Bioshock Infinite Bioshock Infinite’s premise sounds like a fairy tale, but instead of being a

knight sent off to rescue a princess from a dragon in a castle, it’s about a

government agent named Becker Dewitt sent to rescue the mysterious

superhuman, Elizabeth, from a mechanical steam punk bird in a massive,

floating city.

Bioshock Infinite is the third installment of the Bioshock franchise, and

since Bioshock has been, ranked in the top 10 by Gamesradar’s best games

ever, let’s hope this new upcoming game brings much more magnitude to

the table than what Bioshock has already gave us. The game was set to be

released on February 26, 2013 but has been delayed to March, 2013. This

game is rated “M” for mature. (Photo credits go to 2Kgames)

Ice Fishing

By: Clay Salzwedel & Ethan Schmit

Ice fishing is getting into full swing as the weather stays cold

enough for the ice to form. There is about five inches of ice on most of the

area lakes, safe enough to walk on as people are taking out their portable

houses to try and find good fishing areas.

Christmas break is starting next week, so get out and spend some

time on the ice. If you get lucky enough to catch some fish, send in pictures

of your success. Remember to stay safe!

A fisherman from the city was out fishing on a lake in a small boat.

He noticed another man in a small boat open his tackle box and take out a mirror.

Being curious the man rowed over and asked, "What is the mirror for?"

"That's my secret way to catch fish," said the other man. "Shine the mirror on the top of the water.

The fish notice the spot of sun on the water above, and they swim to the surface.

Then I just reach down and net them and pull them into the boat."

"Wow! Does that really work?"

"You bet it does."

"Would you be interested in selling that mirror? I'll give you $30 for it."

"Well, okay."

After the money was transferred, the city fisherman asked, "By the way, how many fish have you caught

this week?"

"You're the sixth," he said.

Editorial – Merry CHRISTMAS!

By: Doyle Zellar

According to a recent devotional a former pastor of mine wrote,

Western Piedmont Community College is the latest Scrooge on a growing

list of people trying to get rid of CHRISTMAS. One of the school’s

organizations was trying to sell Christmas trees to raise money for charity.

The college forced the organization change the wording to holiday trees

saying that the organization could not market their trees in association with

a Christian event. Many people boycotted the selling of the trees because of

the deletion of Christmas. Fortunately, the Alliance Defending Freedom

stepped in to file a suit against the authorities in the school saying that NOT

being able to use the word Christmas was a direct violation of the US

Constitution. Confronted with the possibility of a lawsuit and an angry

community, the college quickly reversed their stance. The list of these kinds

of atrocities goes on. People are forced to say “Happy Holidays” instead of

“Merry Christmas.” Organizations are not allowed to put up Christmas

decorations or Christmas trees, schools can’t call it Christmas vacation,

people say merry x-mas crossing out Christ. A few weeks ago there was a

parent who filed a law suit against an elementary school for taking the

students on a field trip to see a production of “A Charlie Brown Christmas!”

Good grief!

It seems our constitutional amendments have been so twisted and

perverted by those who are so easily offended that we have lost our freedom

of speech, of religion, and of the press altogether. We can curse and swear

all we want, but heaven forbid we say “Merry Christmas!” It reminds me of

little Cody Alecia of Denair, California, a while back who was forced to

take the United States flag off his bicycle because it was causing racial

tensions! Really?! Our country is supposed to protect our freedoms of

speech and religion, so if people want to celebrate Christmas it should be

their right. For those who don't believe in the holiday, they have the freedom

to ignore it and go about their business. Therefore, I want to wish everyone

a very Merry Christmas!

December 21, 2012: The End of the World

By: Marque Loeschen

For hundreds of years scientists and theorists have been predicting

the end of the world. The only problem; they couldn’t estimate when it

would end.

A number of people believe the world is going to end on the 21st

of December. Some take this to extremes; on the National Geographic

Channel there is even a documentary on people preparing for the end of the

world. This show is called Doomsday Preppers. Religion has been predicted

the ending of the world too. Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism,

and Islam are the five major religious groups that have predicted the world

ending in some shape or form.

The Mayans first predicted the end of the world as we know it.

Their calendar, established on the cycles of the sun, ends on December 21,

2012. For their studies, every cycle of the sun is 5,125 years; and once these

years have passed, the world would be in the passage of “The Golden Age.”

Though many people have anticipated the end of the world, I

don’t believe that the world is going to end in our lifetime. There is just no

reliable proof that the world is to come to an end on the twenty first of

December. History explains that people envisioned the world would end on

the first day of the year 2000, but as we all know, this did not occur. Who’s

to say that scientists and theorists aren’t wrong again; as evidenced by many

other mistakes in predictions?

Hanukkah: a Jewish holiday

By Marque Loeschen

Hanukkah, also called the Festival of Lights, is an eight day

Jewish celebration where they rededicate the Holy Temple in Jerusalem.

This holiday is celebrated every year by roughly 14 million Jews.

The event begins on the 25th day of Kislev (the third month in the

Jewish calendar). Day one of Chanukah (another name for Hanukkah) this

year commenced on December 8th and ended on December 16th. Hanukkah

can be celebrated anywhere from late November to late December

depending on when Kislev begins.

The Menorah (the nine-stemmed candle holder) is a religious

symbol for people who practice Judaism which represents the nation of

Israel and the mission to be “a light unto the nations.” (Isaiah 42:6). The

miracle of a day’s worth of oil being able to last eight days is another thing

the Menorah symbolizes. Except during Hanukkah, the use of the Menorah

is forbidden.

Hanukkah has been celebrated since 164 BCE, though it hasn’t

always been celebrated the same. The people who practiced Hanukkah

haven’t always given gifts like they do now or exchanged gelt (money only

given during Hanukkah); they used to give regular money.

Today up to 6 million people celebrate Chanukah. From the 8th

through the 16th, when Hanukkah was in progress, a national Menorah was

lit outside the White House. To mark the beginning of the holiday, there was

a Naval Band to play a few pieces. This is just one event of the millions that

took place in the US during the Jewish holiday.

Man Kills 28

By: Sonja Peters

On Friday, December 14th, a man killed his own mother, then brought open fire in Sandy Hook

Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut.

The 20-year-old was carrying at least two hand guns and a riffle. After the murdering of his

mother, 20 children, and six other staff workers, he committed suicide at the school. Police later found

out that the gunman’s name was Adam Lanza. They believe he suffered from personality disorder. He

lived with his mother full time. Officers believe that his mother was a sub at the elementary, giving

connections on why he went to that school. He murdered his mother then took her car and guns. He then

drove a short distance to the school where he continued his rampage.

Later that day, President Barack Obama gave a speech, struggling to keep his composure. “Our

hearts are broken today.” He also stated that to prevent such shootings, meaningful actions will be taking

place.

That night, hundreds of people packed a Newtown church and stood outside in a vigil for the

victims. People held hands, lit candles, and sang “Silent Night” at St. Rose of Lima Church.

Millions of people want to know why, why did this happen? Why did he do it? Why couldn’t

he just kill himself instead of all the people he also killed? Many of us may never know the true answer

behind these questions. All we can do is pray for those who lost a loved one, and to only hope that it

doesn’t happen again.

Twenty-eight people will not be able to open up presents on Christmas morning. The rampage

that happened just eleven days before Christmas 2012 is the second most deadly school shooting in US

history. The deadliest was in 2007 at Virginia Tech, which claimed 33 lives that day.

SSC has a foreign exchange student by the name of Malin who is from Norway. Her extra-curricular

activities include volleyball and cheerleading. When asked what her favorite Christmas food is, she

replied, “A rib thing we have in Norway.” Her favorite SSC memory so far is cheerleading. When asked

what the best present she has ever received was, she said, “When I was four years old, I got a teddy bear

that was bigger than me. I was so happy!” Her favorite Christmas movie is a Norwegian movie that’s on

the television every Christmas. After graduating, she plans on going back to Norway and taking another

year of high school.

What is Christmas?

By: Riley Lentz

Almost everyone has heard of Christmas, when Santa Claus flies through the skies on

Christmas Eve and delivers presents to all of the good children of the world. But what exactly is

Christmas?

In Christian belief Christmas is the date on which Jesus of Nazareth was born. Christians

believe that Jesus is the Son of God, and that he will come back to life to bring his devoted Christians to

heaven. The Hindu festival Diwali, also known as the Festival of Lights, is the celebration of the victory

of good over evil. The Persian winter solstice celebration Yalda is the celebration of the victory of light

over darkness. Hanukkah is an eight day celebration by Jews. Saint Lucy’s Day is the celebration of Saint

Lucy. Many people celebrate Christmas just to be with family and friends.

The Pope and Twitter

By: Riley Lentz

The eighty-five year old Pope Benedict XVI sent his first tweet on

Wednesday December 12. Around the same time he sent the tweet the

Pope’s account hit one-million Twitter followers. The Pope didn’t actually

type the message but the message was in his own words. Pope Benedict XVI

said in his message “Dear friends, I am pleased to get in touch with you

through Twitter. Thank you for your response. I bless all of you from my

heart.”

Many people have been waiting for the Pope’s first tweet ever

since the account was made. It certainly is a great way for the elderly Pope

to get “hip” with the young people of today.

The High School Choir Concert

By Mason Post

We did an interview with Mrs. Garrison on the high school Christmas Concert on December 6,

2012.

We had asked her how she thought the concert went. Mrs. Garrison said that she was pleased

with the concert. The students worked really hard to entertain the audience and to get them into the

“Christmas Spirit.”

What did she like most about the concert? Mrs. Garrison said that she liked several things. Mrs.

Garrison said, “I liked the fact that the New Perspective African Drumming Ensemble could perform.”

She also said, “It was something that I don’t think many people have seen before.” Mrs. Garrison thought

it was pretty cool. Secondly she was excited for the return of a mixed pop group performance to their

concert programming. Mrs. Garrison said it has been several years since they have been able to get a

group together. She said that the kids had fun putting the group together and the audience enjoyed it.

Top 5 Christmas Movies

By: Trey Cranston

Coming in at number five, is The Santa Claus. Starring

Tim Allen, Eric Lloyd, Judge Reinhold, and Wendy Crewson.

When Scott Calvin (Tim Allen) inadvertently kills Santa on

Christmas Eve, he finds himself magically recruited to take his

place. Scott and Charlie (Eric Lloyd) go on a ride of a lifetime

that they will never forget.

At number four, is the series Home Alone. Macaulay

Culkin (Kevin McCallister) is accidentally left behind. While

his family flies to France, he has to fight off 2 idiotic burglars.

I put A Christmas Story at number three. As Ralphie

has to convince Santa, his parents, and his teachers that a Red

Ryder B.B. gun is really the perfect gift in the 1940’s. Even

though everyone thinks that he will shoot his eye out.

Coming in at number two is How the Grinch Stole

Christmas. The Grinch (Jim Carrey) lives up in the mountain

above Whoville and wants nothing to do with Christmas. Then

Cindy Lou Who (Taylor Momsen) goes up there and convinces

him to come down. It’s a remake of a classic carton about a

creature intent on stealing Christmas.

And at number one is Elf. Buddy (Will Ferrell) was a

human raised in the North Pole. Wreaking havoc on the elf

community due to his ungainly size, he is sent to New York

City to find his Dad (James Caan) in an adventure you and your

family will never forget.

Mistletoes

By: Gabriella Westman

Everyone knows about the mistletoe. It is when two people give

each other kisses on Christmas. Some people might not know but Mistletoe

is a plant it is known around Christmas time to get a kiss. Some people

thought that if you kissed someone under a mistletoe, it would lead to

marriage, and it would bring good luck and health. The berries are filled

with a sticky juice. It can be romantic but the berries are poisonous and

children should not touch the berries. A misletoe is a sign of love, peace,

and goodwill. It grows on a tree with no roots and cannot live without the

tree or it will die. The mistletoe got its name in the second century “Mistel”

is another word for “Dung” and “Tan” is another word for “Twig”. It is an

old version of a bird dropping on a tree branch. In the early centuries, it was

thought that the mistletoe grew on birds. It was a tradition for every kiss you

take off one berry, and when the berries are gone then the kisses are done

but they might die from eating the berries. The mistletoe is actually a

parasite it grows on other plants and it takes energy from other plants.

Around 1oo A.D. they thought it could cure miracles, and it could cure

diseases’ and protect them from witches. The people would hang the

mistletoes in their houses to keep the evil spirits away. Be careful about

eating the berries from the wild mistletoes because you will have bad side

effects or you might die.
