Battle Born Nevada Chapter 39173

December 2016 Volume 19, Issue11

Note from the Editor

Looks like Winter has arrived!

This is the time of year when rides are scarce and photos for the Pig Tales few.

Please keep in mind last minute ride schedules. These are sent out as email blasts

and can arrive as early as 2 days before a ride. The weekend of Dec 3rd and 4th

are great examples. My recommendation is for those that want to ride, look at the

weather and if it looks reasonable, check you emails and calendar. If you are a

Road Captain or know one you can badger into forming a ride, get it set up and

you will most likely get others interested.

I would like to thank those that submitted photos. Please I encourage all of you to

send your pictures in or provide a means that I might retrieve them. You can send

them to me at [email protected] or [email protected].

Thank You all!

Battle Born HOG Chapter General Membership Meeting Minutes Nov 2, 2016 The Pledge of Allegiance was recited. • Director Sherry reminded everyone that the Chapter holiday photo would be taken at this meeting. She explained each person receives a

print of the group photo at the holiday party in December. Member Joseph brought his camera to the meeting and was also recruited to be one of the Chapter photographers on rides and such in 2017.

o Sherry also mentioned the voting to occur during this meeting for the elected Chapter positions of Treasurer, Secretary and Assistant Director and stated there had been no additional nominations received since the previous month’s meeting.

• Secretary Donna was not in attendance so Jennifer took notes at the meeting and had nothing to share as the back-up Secretary. • Treasurer Shirley stated the beginning bank balance was $3,031.34, $175.00 was spent on various patches and $284.69 was spent on raffle

prizes, leaving an ending balance of $2,571.65. • Activities Officer Pat (“Pebbles”) wished everyone a Happy Thanksgiving since the holiday will be behind us when we attend our next Chapter

meeting. • LOH Officer Jennifer thanked everyone who participated in the recent “HOGs of a Feather Ride Together” lunch outing and expressed regret

she was unable to join in. • Head Road Captain Tommy patched in a new Road Captain, Howard, stating he’d attended classes in addition to leading and sweeping the

required amount of rides and received feedback from the other Road Captains along the way. • Member Dave, who said he came “from the other Chapter”, shared information about the possibility for the two Chapters to ride together in

the Veterans Day parade in Reno on Friday, November 11th. Dave said the parade is quite short and helmets are optional during it. He mentioned that many nice restaurants in Reno provide free meals to veterans on Veterans Day so it would be fun to have lunch together after the parade. He said he can gather up the group in Carson City and escort them to Reno or everyone can meet up in Reno and encouraged those interested to reach out.

• Editor Mike introduced himself for the benefit of newer members, stating he’s the one who sends out the Pig Tales newsletter each month. He thanked everyone who provides photos, including folks who’ve given him links to photo-sharing sites. It was mentioned that Steve is taking over as Editor in 2017.

• Safety Officer Bob referred to his recent officers’ article in Pig Tales about helmets. He recommends replacing helmets whenever needed or when they’ve gotten old with a good quality helmet that fits well. Bob stated there will be another group riding class soon. He provided information on E-85 fuel as it’s becoming more common to see it at gas stations, especially in other parts of the country. Bob shared that E-85 fuel contains 50 – 85% ethanol (85% is the most that’s allowed to be used) and because of this, he strongly cautioned that Harley engines were not made to run on this fuel. Bob recommends that no matter what the posted octane rating says, do not use E-85 fuel in your Harley-Davidson or you’ll have performance issues. He said that E-15 could be used in a pinch but it’s better to use the recommended gasoline at all times as even an octane booster doesn’t help the E-15 much in being appropriate for Harley engines. Member Karl mentioned that ethanol fuels produce a loss in gas mileage no matter what vehicle you put it in. Ethanol fuels are OK for flex fuel vehicles but not Harleys.

• Membership Officer Diane introduced Jack Morgan who was visiting the Chapter. He lives in Dayton and rides a 2007 Wide Glide. Jack enrolled in the Chapter prior to the end of the meeting and was welcomed by all.

o Diane pointed out the sign-up sheets for the Christmas party and to sign in for the meeting. She reminded the group of the importance of getting the headcount for the party and that the last day to pay for the dinner is at the December Chapter meeting.

o Diane reminded everyone to try to have their 2017 dues and completed membership forms to her before the end of the year, if possible.

o Diane shared that our current membership is at 83 and she’s pleased that the Chapter is growing slowly and nicely. She encouraged everyone to invite fellow riders to join rides and come to our meetings.

• Historian Kevin was not in attendance. • Webmaster Darcy had no comments to share. • Photographer Kathy was not in attendance. • Awards Officer Gary commended everyone for earning lots of feathers this year and thanked everyone for coming out and

supporting rides throughout the year. He encouraged members to submit ideas and input on ways to make the Chapter even better. Gary asked anyone with questions about the feather program to contact him and encouraged everyone to keep riding. It was pointed out that the feather program is voluntary for those who wish to participate.

• Assistant Director Keith expressed pleasure that Sylvia attended the meeting. Keith provided a brief recap of the Officers’ Meeting including the nominations for Member of the Year and that Keith has been working with Maya at Battle Born H-D to organize a program for discounts for Chapter members making purchases at the dealership.

o Keith had sheets which interested people can complete with their contact information, in order to be texted when rides were being planned somewhat last-minute.

o Keith encouraged everyone to use the ride suggestion sheets which are provided in Pig Tales and mentioned that Sherry Quick will be taking over as Head Road Captain in 2017. The annual ride planning meeting is set for January 14, 2017. Keith said they are looking for suggestions for more one-night overnighter rides for next year and suggestions in general for ways to improve.

o Keith expressed gratitude for the Road Captains in putting on 52 Chapter rides so far in 2016. o Keith shared his perspective that new members bring strength and fresh ideas to the Chapter and he’s looking for them

to get involved and look for niches to fill within the Chapter. o Keith mentioned that Troy and Joe were interested in becoming Road Captains and added that a valid driver’s license

with a motorcycle endorsement is a requirement. • Director Sherry reiterated the current nominations for the elected positions and no one provided any additional nominations so

voting was conducted via show of hands as each office had no nominees running against the existing nominees: o Two-year term as Treasurer: Barbara (“Princess”) was elected by a unanimous show of hands o Two-year term as Secretary: Jennifer was elected by a unanimous show of hands o One-year term as Assistant Director during 2017 and becoming Director in 2018: Mr. Bill was elected by an almost-

unanimous show of hands (one member jokingly voted against his election) • Sherry announced there was birthday cake inscribed with “Happy Birthday U-Turn” in honor of Head Road Captain Tommy’s

birthday. November birthdays were celebrated for Darcy, Tommy, Steve and Shirley. • The group holiday photo was taken, followed by a break. • Sylvia announced a fundraiser for Dean Brownell who is battling multiple health issues, to be held on December 4th at Sparks

Lounge, located at Sparks Blvd and Baring. The festivities will begin around 1 PM and include food, drinks, live music including Sylvia’s band performing and an auction.

• Tickets for raffle prizes were drawn. o The first raffle prize winner was Keith o The second raffle prize was won by Diane o The third raffle prize went to RJ o The fourth raffle prize winner was Steve o The fifth raffle prize went to Terry o The sixth winning ticket belonged to Pebbles o The winner of the 50/50 drawing was Pete, who received $43 o Tommy’s Rider Incentive Program drawing for a $25 Harley gift card went to Brenda. The group was reminded that the

more rides you go on, the more tickets are entered for you into this drawing. • A reminder was given for the Toy Run on Saturday, November 5th. The group will meet at Minden Maverik at 9:30 to leave at

10:00. The ride will go to Carson City and further destinations will be decided at that time.
