Escape from custodyOn Saturday just after midnight,
Merritt RCMP attempted to stop a vehi-cle for an infraction when the driveraccelerated and took off speeding weston Hwy 8, in excess of 120km/h.
The vehicle was seen headed upMammette Lake Rd, and turned onto adirt road. When a second police vehicleattempted to stop it, the driver againtook off, only stopping after running intoa farmers fence. The driver, 19-year oldMark Dewar, exited the vehicle which
was stolen and began running, butwas tackled by one of the officers andtaken into custody. Later that day, at6:30pm, Dewar complained of medicalissues while in cells and was transportedto NVGH. At 8:30pm, policed received acall from the guard at the hospital advis-ing that Dewar had escaped on foot,wearing a set of handcuffs on one armand leg shackles. Police dog serviceswere called, but couldnt find any trace.
On Monday at 1pm, an officer spot-ted Dewar riding a bike in a back alleynear Coldwater Ave. He fled on foot andwas pursued by the officer for several
blocks. Calls from the public helped tolocate Dewar and he was eventuallycaught near the Coldwater River andHouston St. He now faces charges ofescape lawful custody, possess stolen
property over $5000, dangerous opera-tion of a motor vehicle, breach of proba-tion, and flight from a police officer.
Police want to thank the public whocalled in and assisted in the arrest.
