    FASD Preentionand Spport Month

Every September, BC marks FASDPrevention and Support Month and Day(Sept 9). On the ninth day of the ninthmonth, people around the world markthe day to help raise awareness about thedangers of drinking while pregnant. Theday was chosen to symbolize the ninemonths of pregnancy.

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder(FASD) affects an estimated 9 in every

1,000 infants. And because the wide-ranging symptoms are not always visiblyapparent, it is sometimes called an invis-ible disability. Yet those who live withFASD face life-long challenges that mostof us don't ever have to worry about.

Government and community partner-ships help ensure FASD supports areavailable throughout BC for affected chil-dren and families. These include assess-ment & diagnosis for children;personalized assistance & information forfamilies; information for teachers &school district staff to help address theneeds of students with FASD; prenatal &postpartum support for expectant moth-ers; support for at-risk mothers to pro-mote healthy pregnancies; and aPersonalized Supports Initiative thatgives adults with FASD access to services.

While there is no known cure forFASD, it can be prevented through in-creased awareness. Please help spreadthe word: Alcohol and pregnancy don'tmix. There is no safe amount of alcohol,no safe type of alcohol and no safe timeto drink during pregnancy.
