Choosing shows for Merrigong’s season each year doesn’t get any less exciting the more times I do it (this is my eighth season for Merrigong). It helps that there is no limit to the great theatre being made all over the world by incredibly imaginative playwrights, inventive directors and designers, and talented actors. Still, seeing as much theatre as I do could leave one a little jaded. But when we start putting together our season each year, something clicks inside, and there’s a little thrill as each possibility arises, as each show falls into place. Some of the shows I’ve seen already – in Sydney or Adelaide, London or Edinburgh. Some haven’t been made yet, but I’ve been excited by a script or the production concept a director has pitched. But with all of them, what excites me most is the thought of seeing the show here in Wollongong, with you, our audience. So each year by the time I have to write this message for the brochure I can hardly wait for the coming year. This season is certainly no exception.

In 2013, I’m looking forward to sharing a lot of laughter with you. Our theatre season is filled with humour - from the unrivalled wit of George Bernard Shaw’s Mrs Warren’s Profession to the beautiful daggy-ness of School Dance; from the inspired lunacy of The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) to the comic genius of the real thing, Shakespeare’s The Comedy of Errors.

We’ll also see some of the finest theatre performers in the world – the sublime Helen Morse in Sundowner, national treasure Jack Charles telling his own story in Jack Charles V The Crown, the extraordinary Zimbabwean actors Denton Chikura and Tonderai Munyebvu (Two Gents) with their infectious, ‘township style’ versions of Shakespeare’s Two Gentlemen of Verona and Kupenga Kwa Hamlet, and one of the UK’s most acclaimed and highly original

companies, Kneehigh Theatre, who’ll bring us their stunningly stylish version of Noël Coward’s Brief Encounter.

And we’ll be able to share one of the great thrills of theatre-going - seeing a world premiere of a new theatre work – not once but twice. Our theatre-making program, Make It @Merrigong, will bring to the stage Van Badham’s cheeky, charming new play The Bull, the Moon and the Coronet of Stars (a co-production with Griffin Theatre Company and Hothouse Theatre) and Alana Valentine’s stunning verbatim exploration of the tragic human aftermath of the Waterfall train disaster, Dead Man Brake (a Merrigong commission).

Putting together our annual season is fun, but it’s also a responsibility we take very seriously. The question I ask myself as we consider each possible show is whether I am excited at the thought of sitting in our theatre here in Wollongong with you and watching it. I can honestly say I’m thrilled at the thought of doing that for each of the shows in this brochure.

OK, no more talking about it.

I can’t wait for the opening night of our 2013 season. I look forward to seeing you there.

A sell-out when it premiered at the Adelaide Festival in 2012, and heading to Wollongong straight from its 2013 Sydney Festival season, School Dance is a wonderfully original mash-up of `80s kitsch and kooky, tongue-in-cheek humour - perfect for anyone who is, or has ever been, a teenager.

Set in the midst of that terrifying rite of passage known as the school dance, the play follows three loveably awkward

teenaged boys on a hormone- and mee goreng-fuelled quest for social acceptability.

Written by and starring Matthew Whittet (The Book of Everything), School Dance draws inspiration from the 1980s teen angst films of John Hughes (The Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off) to create a nostalgic, boisterous and achingly real theatrical gem that you won’t want to miss.

Blending a fresh cultural perspective with physically engaging and intimate performances, the award-winning, London-based Two Gents Productions has

received enormous critical acclaim for their explorations of Shakespeare’s classic plays through the eyes of modern Zimbabweans.

In broad, loud, triumphantly energetic `township style’, the two actors slip into all of the play’s characters – from amorous suitors to sullen daughters – bringing

Shakespeare’s verse to life in new and unfamiliar ways.

TWO GENTS PRODUCTIONS’

Two Gentlemen of Verona Kupenga Kwa Hamlet

Played in repertory

Kupenga Kwa Hamlet In the twilight of a pre-colonial Zimbabwe – a world of unyielding beliefs and ritual, where the afterlife and the present co-exist – Hamlet, a tribal prince, returns home to find his father murdered, his mother incoherent and a new, dangerous chief ruling over his homeland.

Two Gentlemen of Verona From Verona to Milan, via Harare and Bulawayo, two great friends vie for the love of the same woman. When one is banished, their friendship is threatened and only through disguise, deception and intrigue are they reconciled in this charming version of one of Shakespeare’s great comedies.

“It’s the strangest thing. No longer being able to tell what is the past and what is the present...”

Writer Peggy is in her late 50s and has younger onset dementia. Her relationship with memory and immediacy, the present and the past, is beginning to dissolve.

If a loved one starts to lose their memories, what role can we play in holding on to them? And how can we care for them in the present while honouring their memory?

Sundowner is the result of years of research, community engagement and creative development, and was the subject of a highly regarded ABC Artscape documentary. It expertly combines theatre, beautiful choreography and imagery in a story of lament, grief, and ultimately, love.

Complemented by original music by Paul Kelly, Megan Washington and Kelly Ryall, Sundowner is a simple, yet powerful story of family, love and loss told through the eyes of three generations.

Legendary playwright George Bernard Shaw dissects the precarious bond between mother and daughter, as well as the thorny issues of class and privilege, in this period drama that remains remarkably relevant.

Vivie Warren is an optimistic young ‘bluestocking’ working her way towards social independence and a successful career, when she makes a discovery that rocks her world: her comfortable upbringing and expensive education were bankrolled by her mother Kitty’s

unorthodox profession.Although written in 1893, Mrs

Warren’s Profession was not performed publically in London until 1925, having been banned for its frank discussion of a taboo topic, but also for its forthright challenge of the Victorian status quo regarding the rights of women. Helen Thomson (In the Next Room or the vibrator play, Summer of the Seventeenth Doll) and Drew Forsythe (The Wharf Revue) star in a play that sparkles with a vitality and wit belying its 120 years.

In 2013, Merrigong is pleased to be co-producing with Australia’s premier new writing theatre company, Griffin Theatre Company, and our fellow regional powerhouse, Albury Wodonga’s Hothouse Theatre. This play is an absolute gem - a romantic comedy of epic proportions set in the world of art and antiquity.

As the sexual tension between Marion and Michael mounts, the museum is haunted by strange stirrings, and rumours of a monster abound. One night, alone together amongst the ancient relics, the

lights go out and there is nothing but an unravelling ball of string to protect them from the creature in the darkness…

Inspired by the Greek myths of Ariadne, Theseus and Dionysis, The Bull, the Moon and the Coronet of Stars is a whimsical, sensual and charmingly humorous love story. Award-winning playwright Van Badham (Camarilla, The Sameness of the Days - 4 Plays About Wollongong) and director Lee Lewis will lure you into an orgy of antiquity, cupcakes and beachside frivolity.

From Stolen Generation to Koori theatre in the `70s, from film sets to Her Majesty’s prisons, Jack Charles V The Crown runs the gamut of a life lived to its utmost.

Uncle Jack Charles is an Australian legend of the stage and screen, and his unswerving optimism transforms this tale of addiction, crime and doing time into a kind of vagabond’s progress – a map of the traps of dispossession and a

guide to reaching the age of grey-haired wisdom.

Full of pathos and resolve, this deftly performed one-man show played to sell-out audiences at the Melbourne International Arts Festival, Belvoir St Theatre and the Brisbane Festival. Now, Australia’s oldest indigenous theatre company brings us this beautiful and big-hearted theatrical experience.

A hit for over 20 years, including a nine-year run in London’s West End, The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) is an international comedy-theatre phenomenon that will leave you rolling in the aisles and hollering for more!

Three talented actors brazenly blend the best of the Bard with the bottom of the absurdity barrel in this feast of inspired lunacy. It’s a side-splitting roller

coaster ride of improvisation, pop culture and audience participation, and features the fastest, funniest Hamlet you’re ever likely to see.

With a stellar cast including one of Australia’s best-loved stand-up comedians, Damian Callinan, The Complete Works is a brilliant and loving farcical deconstruction that remains true to Shakespeare’s essence (well… sort of). It’s perfect for everyone from first timers to aficionados.

There have been almost 100 theatrical and film adaptations of Mary Shelley’s classic, and this latest by BAFTA Award-winner Nick Dear gets to the heart of Shelley’s story, exploring scientific responsibility, parental neglect and the nature of good and evil.

When the Creature is cast out into society by his creator, the young Dr Frankenstein, he is shunned for his grotesque appearance. But when a blind man takes him under his wing,

the Creature begins to question his existence and yearn for a future without loneliness.

This poetic adaptation by Nick Dear was a huge success at the National Theatre in London in 2011, and breathes new life into the great 19th century gothic novel. This Australian premiere production features original music from acclaimed composer Elena Kats-Chernin played live on stage. But be warned – Frankenstein is not for the faint-hearted.

In January 2003, a State Rail train travelling from Sydney to Port Kembla derailed just south of Waterfall station. Seven people were killed and dozens injured in what became known as the Waterfall train disaster. A Special Commission of Inquiry concluded that the accident could have been avoided if earlier safety warnings regarding the `deadman’s emergency brake’ had not been ignored.

To commemorate the 10th anniversary of this tragic event, Merrigong is honoured to commission and produce this new work from critically-acclaimed playwright Alana Valentine. Using verbatim sources including the Inquiry

transcript, as well as original text, the play explores the impact of this tragedy, not only on the individuals involved, but on the community as a whole.

At the heart of the work is an acknowledgment of those who, after tragedies such as Waterfall, are brought in to counsel survivors and the families of victims. Through the words of these extraordinary individuals, the work explores profound questions about the nature of tragedy, offering a compassionate insight into the human condition. Dead Man Brake is ultimately an uplifting and powerful examination of human resilience in the face of tragedy.

Everybody loves a case of mistaken identity, and this time Shakespeare doubles up on the doubling up with The Comedy of Errors.

Two sets of identical twins are separated at birth when they’re rescued from a shipwreck. When they end up in the same shifty port‐town of Ephesus as adults, we join them on their bizarre journey of reconciliation. As they collide unknowingly

with each other’s friends and family, it’s not long before this absurd tale of mistaken identity and far‐fetched coincidence unfolds into chaotic hilarity.

Director Imara Savage takes on Shakespeare’s well-loved comedy, where sharp banter and comical word‐play lure us into a world where characters are reinvented, individuality is fluid, and bigger themes lie just below the surface.

“I’m a happily married woman. Or rather I was until a few weeks ago.”

David Lean’s classic 1945 film Brief Encounter, based on Noël Coward’s original stage play Still Life, is the starting point for this lovingly rendered homage to both great classics and is remembered as one of the most haunting love stories of all time. We’re thrilled to present this widely acclaimed production from the UK’s esteemed Kneehigh Theatre, last seen in Australia at the Sydney Festival with The Red Shoes.

Switching seamlessly between live theatre and film footage, this extraordinary retelling has been a hit both on Broadway and in the West End, taking audiences back to a bygone age of romance and the silver screen. With live musicians on stage, characters jumping in and out of film screens, and a couple so in love that they literally float on air, Brief Encounter will take you on a breathtaking, funny and poignant ride filled with Noël Coward’s debonair songs.

Nominated for four Olivier Awards, Brief Encounter is not to be missed.

The songline continues with Stephen Page and Daniel Riley McKinley

The internationally-acclaimed Bangarra Dance Theatre presents BLAK, a new production in three parts about the challenges and rewards for Indigenous young people transitioning into adulthood. Embracing their responsibilities, Indigenous young people provide an intrinsic link in the songline that connects the ancient past to our shared future.

Based on the artists’ personal experiences and their appreciation of traditional customs and practices, BLAK challenges the sacred

place of culture and language in the context of changing social behaviours.

The subtlety and strengths of male and female energies are evident in Scar by Daniel Riley McKinley and Yearning by Stephen Page respectively, and then in Keepers, both choreographers explore a 21st century sensibility.

BLAK is about the rites of passage for young men and young women, ultimately reaffirming their powerful desire for belonging, to family and to country.

Now in its 15th year, the Roadshow is one of Wollongong’s favourite nights out, and will again offer a selection of Australian, international and special guest comedians; literally the best bits of the Comedy Festival condensed into the one `all killer’ travelling event.

Last year, comedians taking part in the Roadshow performed to enthusiastic crowds in 60 cities across Australia, as well

as a highly successful stint in Singapore and a sold-out return season in Hong Kong.

Given such popularity, this year’s Roadshow plans to connect with even more comedy fans and share the kind of humour that’s had Festival attendees weeping with laughter.

Lock up your serious side and throw away the key, because this will be a dangerously funny night.

A breathtakingly physical dance theatre masterpiece

In 2008, with some of the world’s most famous theatres, Merrigong co-commissioned a new work from globally acclaimed choreographer, Garry Stewart. G has since gone on to tour extensively across Europe, and we’re delighted to at last be able to present this extraordinary dance work.

G is a thrilling deconstruction of the ballet Giselle, fusing the technical prowess of classical ballet with explosive choreography from Helpmann Award-winner Stewart.

The eleven dancers push contemporary dance to its limits, with jaw-dropping athleticism accompanied by a haunting electronic music score and a hovering panorama of LED screens.

Australian Dance Theatre has showcased their dynamic style on TV programs like So You Think You Can Dance, but it is as a live experience that their work truly shines. G is sophisticated, virtuosic and incredibly physical.

A verbatim play by Katie Pollock and Paul Daley

Merrigong is delighted to be co-producing a new verbatim theatre event to be performed during the winter parliamentary recess in July 2013.

What will we remember about the 134th Parliament of Australia? That it was supposed to be about us - but was really about them. Always them.

As the election nears, this verbatim play will take the words of Hansard, the factual record of what our MPs say

in parliament, to relive the highs and lows, the `ayes’ and `nos’ of our national discourse.

In the tradition of The Vagina Monologues, The Hansard Monologues: A Matter of Public Importance will let our MPs speak for themselves. Each performance will also feature a guest star direct from Canberra!

This is the story of how our country makes itself, over and over again. It’s about us.

The mighty and the ridiculous will duck for cover as The Wharf Revue team swoops in for another go at poking politics and popular culture in the eye with its carefully sharpened satire stick.

The Wharf Revue has been an institution for more than a decade, attracting a large and loyal band of fans over the years. Even those at the pointy end of the stick are

known to sneak in to the audience. They sing, they dance, they wear

ridiculous costumes and sometimes even speak in tongues, all in glorious service of the comic cause.

If the looming federal election fails to go your way you can depend on one good news story: the provision of plenty of new material for these talented satirists.

Australia’s only national flamenco company has been thrilling audiences with their heady mix of traditional and contemporary flamenco music, dance and song for over a decade. Now, for the first time, Flamenco Fire is coming to Wollongong.

Drawing from over five centuries of music and culture, Al-Andaluz traces the evolution of flamenco from the 15th century to its golden age in 19th century

Seville. Featuring an evocative mix of music spanning diverse influences from North Africa through to Northern Europe, the show captures the exotic clash of cultures that formed the foundation of the art form.

With compelling rhythms, stirring song, and dazzling choreography, Al-Andaluz is a mesmerising feast for the senses.

Merrigong is committed to commissioning and developing new Australian works for future production, as well as supporting the work of local independent artists with established performance platforms and regular development opportunities through our Make It @Merrigong program.

You can see the outcome of these developments in regular Studio Sessions throughout the year.

Studio Sessions enable Merrigong to put new work that is in development for

future production in front of an audience (Ruff - New Works in Progress), give local emerging and established artists the opportunity to present the first public outing of new work they have been developing on site. They also provide a context for other performance platforms such as Melbourne International Comedy Festival’s Raw Comedy, Australia’s biggest and most prestigious annual open mic comedy competition for aspiring comedians.

A whimsical, musical and very funny cabaret for ages 8 and up

From the wild imaginings of one of Australia’s most celebrated creators of theatre for young audiences, springs a lyrical, satirical cabaret like no other!

Meet our musical troupe of four, who’ve just stepped out of a time machine. They’re on a mission to teach today’s rascally kids a thing or two about the importance of being

well-behaved, and are armed with Hilaire Belloc’s classic comic poems from the 1900s about wayward children and the outlandish fates that befall them.

This delightful, colourful family production is proof that learning lessons about good behaviour has never been quite so hilarious.

Cautionary Tales for ChildrenBased on the verse by Hilaire Belloc

Laugh until you cry with the funniest children’s entertainers in the country

The Listies impressed us so much in 2012 that we had to invite them back for more school holiday fun, this time with their brand new show about movies, The Listies in 6D!

Imagine the best movie you’ve ever seen, then times it by a million and add 1. That’s how good The Listies 6D movie is going to be. They are probably going

get an Oscar, or a Tony, or at least meet someone called Oscar or Tony.

Matt and Rich are The Listies, a comedy duo quickly making a name for themselves as Australia’s favourite children’s entertainers.

Expect the unexpected with this cheeky, interactive, totally irreverent and wildly funny show.

Merrigong provides our community with a range of creative opportunities and experiences. We commission, develop and produce new theatre that tells important stories about our region and community, as well as support independent artists through our Make It @Merrigong program. We also deliver a number of specific community-focussed programs, such as educational opportunities for young people through workshops and other events, and our mixed-abilities theatre project, working with performers with disabilities.

All of this artistic and community work costs a lot to keep going – more than we can cover through Government funding alone, which amounts to just 20% of Merrigong Theatre Company’s total revenue. To keep these important programs running (and to grow them in the future) we need your financial support.

When you make a tax deductible donation of $150 or more you become part of Merrigong’s Inner Circle. For 12 months you will:

• Have your donation acknowledged on displays in the IPAC foyer, and in Merrigong’s annual report

• Receive a VIP invitation to Merrigong’s Season Launch (includes reserved seating)

• Receive occasional invitations to exclusive “behind the scenes” special events

• Receive occasional updates on how donations are being used to support our programs.

Your support can make a huge difference.

Donations can be made on the Season Ticket booking form or by contacting Judi Douglas at [email protected] or (02) 4224 5902.

All donations over $2 are tax-deductible.

“I moved to the Illawarra two years ago and can’t imagine my life here without Merrigong Theatre Company. To support your wonderful

annual program of the best in theatre and dance, and have the opportunity to find stimulation, and fun, in the special events you offer Inner Circle patrons are just two reasons to join.”
