Choosing shows for Merrigong’s season each year doesn’t get any less exciting the more times I do it (this is my eighth season for Merrigong). It helps that there is no limit to the great theatre being made all over the world by incredibly imaginative playwrights, inventive directors and designers, and talented actors. Still, seeing as much theatre as I do could leave one a little jaded. But when we start putting together our season each year, something clicks inside, and there’s a little thrill as each possibility arises, as each show falls into place. Some of the shows I’ve seen already – in Sydney or Adelaide, London or Edinburgh. Some haven’t been made yet, but I’ve been excited by a script or the production concept a director has pitched. But with all of them, what excites me most is the thought of seeing the show here in Wollongong, with you, our audience. So each year by the time I have to write this message for the brochure I can hardly wait for the coming year. This season is certainly no exception.

In 2013, I’m looking forward to sharing a lot of laughter with you. Our theatre season is filled with humour - from the unrivalled wit of George Bernard Shaw’s Mrs Warren’s Profession to the beautiful daggy-ness of School Dance; from the inspired lunacy of The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) to the comic genius of the real thing, Shakespeare’s The Comedy of Errors.

We’ll also see some of the finest theatre performers in the world – the sublime Helen Morse in Sundowner, national treasure Jack Charles telling his own story in Jack Charles V The Crown, the extraordinary Zimbabwean actors Denton Chikura and Tonderai Munyebvu (Two Gents) with their infectious, ‘township style’ versions of Shakespeare’s Two Gentlemen of Verona and Kupenga Kwa Hamlet, and one of the UK’s most acclaimed and highly original

companies, Kneehigh Theatre, who’ll bring us their stunningly stylish version of Noël Coward’s Brief Encounter.

And we’ll be able to share one of the great thrills of theatre-going - seeing a world premiere of a new theatre work – not once but twice. Our theatre-making program, Make It @Merrigong, will bring to the stage Van Badham’s cheeky, charming new play The Bull, the Moon and the Coronet of Stars (a co-production with Griffin Theatre Company and Hothouse Theatre) and Alana Valentine’s stunning verbatim exploration of the tragic human aftermath of the Waterfall train disaster, Dead Man Brake (a Merrigong commission).

Putting together our annual season is fun, but it’s also a responsibility we take very seriously. The question I ask myself as we consider each possible show is whether I am excited at the thought of sitting in our theatre here in Wollongong with you and watching it. I can honestly say I’m thrilled at the thought of doing that for each of the shows in this brochure.

There have been almost 100 theatrical and film adaptations of Mary Shelley’s classic, and this latest by BAFTA Award-winner Nick Dear gets to the heart of Shelley’s story, exploring scientific responsibility, parental neglect and the nature of good and evil.

When the Creature is cast out into society by his creator, the young Dr Frankenstein, he is shunned for his grotesque appearance. But when a blind man takes him under his wing,

the Creature begins to question his existence and yearn for a future without loneliness.

This poetic adaptation by Nick Dear was a huge success at the National Theatre in London in 2011, and breathes new life into the great 19th century gothic novel. This Australian premiere production features original music from acclaimed composer Elena Kats-Chernin played live on stage. But be warned – Frankenstein is not for the faint-hearted.

In January 2003, a State Rail train travelling from Sydney to Port Kembla derailed just south of Waterfall station. Seven people were killed and dozens injured in what became known as the Waterfall train disaster. A Special Commission of Inquiry concluded that the accident could have been avoided if earlier safety warnings regarding the `deadman’s emergency brake’ had not been ignored.

To commemorate the 10th anniversary of this tragic event, Merrigong is honoured to commission and produce this new work from critically-acclaimed playwright Alana Valentine. Using verbatim sources including the Inquiry

transcript, as well as original text, the play explores the impact of this tragedy, not only on the individuals involved, but on the community as a whole.

At the heart of the work is an acknowledgment of those who, after tragedies such as Waterfall, are brought in to counsel survivors and the families of victims. Through the words of these extraordinary individuals, the work explores profound questions about the nature of tragedy, offering a compassionate insight into the human condition. Dead Man Brake is ultimately an uplifting and powerful examination of human resilience in the face of tragedy.

Everybody loves a case of mistaken identity, and this time Shakespeare doubles up on the doubling up with The Comedy of Errors.

Two sets of identical twins are separated at birth when they’re rescued from a shipwreck. When they end up in the same shifty port‐town of Ephesus as adults, we join them on their bizarre journey of reconciliation. As they collide unknowingly

with each other’s friends and family, it’s not long before this absurd tale of mistaken identity and far‐fetched coincidence unfolds into chaotic hilarity.

Director Imara Savage takes on Shakespeare’s well-loved comedy, where sharp banter and comical word‐play lure us into a world where characters are reinvented, individuality is fluid, and bigger themes lie just below the surface.

The internationally-acclaimed Bangarra Dance Theatre presents BLAK, a new production in three parts about the challenges and rewards for Indigenous young people transitioning into adulthood. Embracing their responsibilities, Indigenous young people provide an intrinsic link in the songline that connects the ancient past to our shared future.

Based on the artists’ personal experiences and their appreciation of traditional customs and practices, BLAK challenges the sacred

place of culture and language in the context of changing social behaviours.

The subtlety and strengths of male and female energies are evident in Scar by Daniel Riley McKinley and Yearning by Stephen Page respectively, and then in Keepers, both choreographers explore a 21st century sensibility.

In 2008, with some of the world’s most famous theatres, Merrigong co-commissioned a new work from globally acclaimed choreographer, Garry Stewart. G has since gone on to tour extensively across Europe, and we’re delighted to at last be able to present this extraordinary dance work.

G is a thrilling deconstruction of the ballet Giselle, fusing the technical prowess of classical ballet with explosive choreography from Helpmann Award-winner Stewart.

What will we remember about the 134th Parliament of Australia? That it was supposed to be about us - but was really about them. Always them.

As the election nears, this verbatim play will take the words of Hansard, the factual record of what our MPs say

in parliament, to relive the highs and lows, the `ayes’ and `nos’ of our national discourse.

Wheelchair access and mobility assistance A number of seats and wheelchair positions in each IPAC theatre are held for wheelchair users or patrons with other mobility concerns. Patrons must advise the box office at the time of booking if they wish to access these.

Hearing assistanceBoth IPAC theatres are equipped with sound enhancement facilities. The IMB Theatre has an FM system for hearing augmentation. The Gordon Theatre has an induction hearing loop compatible with T-switch hearing aids. Receivers can be obtained free of charge from the box office prior to performances on a first come, first served basis.

Live captioningMerrigong Theatre Company captions select season shows for the benefit of deaf and hearing impaired patrons. Captions are displayed on plasma screens at the side of the stage. Please check the seat map when booking online or mention your interest in captioning when booking at the box office to ensure you are in the best position to make use of this service. Audio description Select performances in Season 2013 will be audio described for the benefit of patrons who are blind or visually impaired. Proof of concession Discounted ticket prices are available to Pensioner Concession Card or Seniors Card holders, as well as full-time students. Transaction feesA $5.10 fee per transaction is payable for tickets purchased online or over the phone (regardless of the number of tickets purchased).
