The “SID” has been deployed in Merriott on numerous occasions, mainly at two sites within the village. The first site is on the post by the traffic calming outside the village hall; the second on a bespoke new pole at Pye Corner coming down the hill on the road from Crewkerne. The SID records the speed of every vehicle travel-ling towards it. There is some research that suggests that they are more effective if moved around and only in-stalled at a site for, typically, a two week period. After this time they are taken away and the data collected and, once analysed, distributed to the CSW teams and Road Policing Units. A typical set of results can be seen in the graph above for February 2017.
We believe that the SID’s are an excellent remind-er to drivers to slow down and we are keen for it to be at Pye Corner at regular intervals throughout the year. Pye Corner is by far the worst Com-munity Speed Watch (CSW) site for speeding vehi-cles and if pointing up-hill towards the traffic, the SID is a good reminder to drivers to slow down as they enter the village and travel down the hill where it is often dark and slippery.
The last set of data from the SID installation at Pye Corner from 31st Jan to 14th Feb 2017 can be seen in the graph above. To summarise these results, from a total of 17,589 vehicles travelling towards the SID, 14,641 vehicles were speeding at
more than 30 mph, resulting in an 85% percentile speed of 39mph, which is 3mph above the intervention speed of 36mph. While the number of speeding vehicles is so high at this site, it is highly likely that the Road Policing Bikes and Vans will be regular visitors to Pye Corner. The Police
also support CSW sessions where possible and speeding vehicles can be pulled over, offered words of advise, or if needed, issued with fixed penalty points and fines.
We have made significant improvements in reducing the number of speed-ing vehicles
through Merriott and are always looking at ways in which we can make things even better and safer for all. Not all the schemes in and around the village are ideal and I, along with the other CSW team members and the MPC Highways Working Party, will continue to carry out CSW Sessions and try and get highways improvements implemented. (We have several on-going projects which are work-in-progress at MPC.)

Help Please #1 - Treasurer. We have been looking for a new Treasurer for the PCC. John Booth has put in many years of good service, and is standing down. I hope that we will have been able to appoint at our Annual Meeting on 24th April – but I have a feeling that by the time you read this, we may still be look-ing! Is this something you could offer to the church? Please get in touch for an informal chat.
Help Please #2 - Theft. I expect that you have probably heard by now that All Saints Church suffered another theft of roof lead in the middle of March. The culprits stole a ladder from a nearby property to access the south aisle roof and stripped a large proportion of the metal covering. You’ll remember that thieves targeted the more secluded north aisle roof in 2011. It’s a devas-tating blow. The roof was made weather secure the next day, and our Church-wardens and others are now working very hard to obtain the necessary permissions and quotes in order to get a full repair done as soon as possible. Our plan is to use ‘terne-coated’ stainless steel, which looks very much like lead,
but is much less attractive to metal thieves. Our big problem is that our insurers will only pay out a maximum of £7,500. We don’t know the final costs yet, but the church will certainly have to raise many thousands of pounds (perhaps as much as £10-£15k) to com-plete the repair. I can assure you that All Saints church doesn’t have that kind of money in reserve and there is no big Church of England pot that we can dip into for this. We should be able to get a few small grants, BUT we will definitely need the help of the people of Merriott. We have already received 3 gifts total-ling £600. If you value your parish church, please consider a donation.

M e r r i o t t S h o r t M a t B o w l s N e w s We have been busy the past three months with many different competi-tions being entered. Our Home matches have all recorded successful wins with many of our newer members taking part. The winter league at Chard, again sponsored by Milford and Dormer, proved a good starting point for members who had not participated before and showed many excellent and well fought games. Hopefully we shall be able to participate once more in the autumn. The Givle League at East Coker was also very encouraging with Merriott finishing in the higher part of the results table.
Two competitions in the Somerset Spring tournaments at Donyatt have also been completed. In the Singles, Anne Weeks and John Lacey both had their best accomplishments so far, with Anne
getting through to the quarter finals and John to the semis. Umpire for that day was our own Club Chairman, Frank Smith, who was kept very busy all day. On 1st April the Triples competition was played and Merriott entered two teams: Anne, John, and Bill Elston, and Frank, Sue Saunders and Anne Loose. It was a very long day but at the end Anne, John and Bill got through to the semi finals where they met the ultimate win-ners from Burrowbridge. Generally, we were very encouraged by our efforts which get better each year.
Our latest competition, on 8th April, was one instigated last year by Pam Gregory for the Over 70's Cup. Again, most eligi-ble players took part and all games were fiercely fought! At the end of a long morning Margaret Rowswell played Mike Dandridge over ten ends. Mike was the
winner in a very close match. Well done to everyone.
Another big plus for Merriott SMBC is that our Jack Bradley plays for England Under 21s representing Somerset. He is joined by two young ladies from Martock in many of the matches. They recently played in a tournament in Birmingham when England played Wales. England beat Wales 48 to 22 and our photo (shown on page 4) shows the squad proudly holding the England flag.

M e r r i o t t K a ra t e C l u b The Honbu Merriott Karate Club train at our Social Club on Monday and Tuesday evenings and currently has space for new members. We practice Washinkai Karate, a contemporary style developed from the traditional Japanese Wado disciplines. We
form part of the South-West Honbu group with membership of the British Traditional Karate Association and English Karate Federation (EKF). Members range in age from 6 - 50+ years old. Whilst many individuals attend, we also have families where parents enjoy training with and encouraging their children.
Our two newest Black Belts, Kylie Channon and Nick Durant, have just been awarded their Dan grade certificates. This spring several of us ventured inside of the M25 to the Washinkai International Championships held at Reed's School, Cobham, Surrey. All of the Merriott students performed well, with Tom Allen, Louise Fone and Chris Fone bringing back medals from Kumite (fighting) and Kata (forms) categories. We are currently pre-paring to compete in the Honbu championships, on May 14th, to be hosted by Millfield School in Street. Then at the end of
the month we're officiating at the Royal Navy's national competition to be held at HMS Temeraire, Portsmouth.
It's an exciting time for Karate, at the moment, with confirm-ation as a demonstration sport at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. The World Karate Federation will be responsible for
competitor selection and the EKF is the only UK Karate body with WKF recognition. So we are hopeful that a Merriott student could represent Great Britain.
With the right dedication and effort, starting to learn Karate and gaining a 1st Dan Black Belt within four years is certainly achievable. So if any of you have ambitions of competing in the Olympics now is the time to start training. Studying Karate can also be very beneficial to general health and fitness, spatial awareness,
confidence and self control. And of course, whilst we hope not to have to call upon it, being trained and proficient in self defence and never needing to use it is certainly preferable to the alternative. Hello everyone,
Merriott is a very safe and generally low crime area, but unfortunately between the 8th and 14th March, there was some unwanted activity in the Church Street area of Merriott. Two vehicles were broken into, a ladder was removed from a garden and used to steal a quantity of lead from the Church. I have spoken to a number of residents in Church Street but would ask everyone to be vigilant, report anything suspicious they see or hear, especially at night. Please take care to remove property from your vehicles when parking them. If you do have ladders and are unable to store them in a garage or shed, please consider chaining them.
There was also criminal damage reported in Church Street which resulted in a small leylandii being damaged by fire and a sign being spray painted. In a
separate incident, damage has been caused to the decking of the Pavilion at Merriott Recreation Ground by another small fire being lit.
The Beat Team will be increasing patrols in the area and are working with the Parish Council to identify the culprits who have caused damage to this lovely village facility. If you are using the recreation ground, again please be vigilant and report anyone acting anti-socially or causing damage.

Refugee Support Group, South Somerset continues to collect and
transport needed items to Raft - refu-gee aid from Taunton. Summer cloth-ing, food, toiletries and off-the-shelf medicines are desperately needed and donations are welcomed, as financial aid allows Raft to purchase them.

Often overlooked, groundcover plants tie the garden together, whether it’s under shrubs, on a bank or against the house, when planted effec-tively the result is a garden that flows.
For large shady areas under trees or for banks and verges that don’t get too hot, the dwarf comfrey (Symphytum ibericum), forms weed suppressing growth of rough dark green leaves. In early spring, orange buds open to cream flow-ers; it’s an excellent early food plant for bees and grows to about 30cm. Liking similar conditions and also great for bees, Trachystemmon oriental-is makes large mounds to 40cm of rough leaves and has blue borage-like flowers in the spring.
The periwinkles, such as white flowered Vinca difformis will cover a bank or base of a wall and flower for months, they are best if sheltered from cold winds.
In a shady border under shrubs, some of the hardy Geraniums make good ground cover even in dry shade.
The Macrorrhizum varieties flower in May and June and some, like ‘Spessart’, give good au-tumn colour. Also happy in sun or shade is sweet woodruff (Galium odoratum), a car-peting plant with 20cm stems of whorled leaves and starry-white flowers in May, the dried leaves smell of mown hay.
In sunny situations, London Pride, (Saxifraga urbium) has lovely rosettes of evergreen leaves and pink flowers in May and June; it is very effective under a wall or along a path. The wall germander (Teucrium chamaedrys), has small evergreen leaves and pinkish-purple flowers in summer that are loved by bees. It will spread in hot sunny places and is best trimmed occasionally to keep tidy. Similarly, herbs such as Thyme and Oregano make ever-green ground-covering mats in sunny areas and are also brilliant for attracting pollinating

Every month the indoor market has at least 20+ regular stalls attending, various charity stalls and locals selling books, beauty & health products, DVDs and new and used bric-a-brac stalls and much more. We serve bacon butties, teas and coffees and the bar is open.
As well as promoting the Club and raising funds for the new roof, we also support and share the proceeds with many other local charities.

The Co-op recently started a new scheme of giving to charities. 1% of the purchase cost of Co-op goods and
services bought by customers over six months, is given to selected charities in local communities. Our local charities
have been the Friends of Merriott School and the Village Hall. The Co-op has just announced that their scheme has raised
£867 and £872 respectively for these two charities. Two charities now selected will benefit for the next six months.
