How Does the Auction Work? Bidder Registration All attendees at tonight’s event were pre-registered either prior to the event or at check-in this evening. This means that we have your contact information and phone number on file so that check-out at the end of the evening can proceed more smoothly. IMPORTANT: Your bid number is on the back of this catalog. It can be used for both silent and live auction and for purchases throughout the evening. Silent Auction Bidding Procedures The Silent Auction begins at 6 pm at the start of the Admiral’s Reception. Each Silent Auction item has a bid sheet describing the item, and listing the minimum starting bid and incremental increases. In some cases, the actual item is displayed. You may bid on a Silent Auction item by writing your bid number and bid amount in the proper columns. Please write clearly! The first bid must equal or exceed the stated minimum, and each subsequent bid must equal or exceed the minimum incremental increase. The winner at the conclusion of the Silent Auction will be the person with the highest bid amount recorded on the bid sheet. Once you’ve made a bid, keep your eye on it—someone may try to outbid you! Silent Auction Bid Board Procedures There are a variety of high profile/high end items listed on the bid boards. If you want to bid on one of these items, tell the Bid Tender your bid number and the amount you wish to bid, and your bid will be recorded. Silent Auction Table Closing We will begin closing tables at 7:30pm, and we will finish with the Bid Boards. We will announce the closing of each table. In order to win an item, yours must be the last bid recorded on the bid sheet when the table closes. If one or more people are vying for the same item at the close of a table, you may call for a live Bid-Off! The Auctioneer will come to the table and direct the bidding—anyone may join in—until 10 seconds pass without a raise. The final oral bid that remains uncontested for 10 seconds will be the winning bid. (Time limits on Bid-Offs are at the discretion of the Auctioneer.) Group Bidding Procedures People may feel free to pool resources and bid on items as a group, as long as one individual is designated as the bidder. If you share a purchase with others, the winning bidder is responsible for payment at check-out. Other bidders in the group should pay their shares directly to the winning bidder.


Live Auction

The Live Auction begins at 8:30 p.m. Our auctioneer is Charles Bailey-Gates. The auctioneer will announce each item by name; bidding will begin at his discretion, and he will determine the increments by which bidding advances. All announcements from the auction block will supersede any previously written material. During the Live Auction, hold up your assigned number so that the auctioneer can easily see it. In the event of a tie bid, (two people each believe they have the winning bid) the auctioneer will reopen the bidding for those two people only. He will give the person he did not see an opportunity to raise the high bid, and allow bidding to continue until the winner is determined.

Check-Out Procedures

Mermaids and their helpers will be available to take payment for your purchases once the auctions are completed and all winners have been recorded. Checks may be made payable to NMLC. We also accept cash, Visa, MasterCard, American Express and Discover. All auction items must be paid for and taken the night of the event. Massachusetts Maritime Academy cannot hold any items on the premises. Due to the large number of items that have been generously donated for the auction, the check-out process may take some time. We appreciate your patience as we work as quickly as possible to complete your transactions.
