TRANSCRIPT
from the President,
The season of Signs of Long
Ascension is upon us – autumn
signs rise more slowly. The notion
of going a bit slower is very
attractive just now – it has been
a busy summer.
Yesterday, Sunday 26th Feb, was
one of the busy days – I
presented the medical
astrology lecture in South Perth,
featuring the many charts cast
for just one case, - that of my now-recovered husband. Sunday
was eclipse day – and this eclipse was opposite to the one of
Sept 1st that heralded the husbandly crisis which provided our
subject material. They fell on Keith’s ascendant and
descendant respectively.
What I find so enticing about this [medical] form of astrology is
– firstly – it gives proof of our Art over and over again; and –
secondly – apart from the use of some special antiquities, this is
still very normal astrology; nothing overly exotic. Natal charts
plus horary are used for most purposes.
There is a real treat coming up in a month’s time: our friend
Terry MacKinnell is coming back. His presentation is explained
later in this newsletter. Terry is very much an ‘applied
astrologer.’ His own system of defining the ages – including
mini-ages – is proving itself on an ongoing basis. Terry’s studies
of the Trump phenomenon, whole-sign houses and lunations
are a revelation and they show a basic system that we can
and should be using in our own astrology as a major player.
Please don’t miss this fascinating day – Terry lives in the Gold
Coast hinterland and drops in here on his way to Bali; he is a
special guest whose talks are increasingly popular in the East.
Here’s wishing all a very happy March and good fortune all
around.

Editorial:
Another month has passed by and last Sunday was the day of
Jeannette’s Medical Astrology presentation. There were 10 of us
there on the afternoon to share an interesting and very informative day.
I know more were unfortunately unable to attend.
Thursday March 2nd (or TOMORROW) is the first of Jeannette’s Horary Club dates for 2017.
Be sure to be there and have your questions all ready. The lady disects an horary chart
like a brain surgeon. Look for the details later in this issue.
The remainder of March is slow for us but we are getting ready for another very welcome
Terry McKinnell visit for a day workshop on Sunnday 2nd April. All costings can be found
on the flyer as well as details of the day’s progression follow in this issue.
Our popular Hellenistic Astrologer, Samantha Bakewell, begins a series on the subject
here with us. Part one on “Sect”can be found following.
Many members wonder what exactly they are paying their membership fees for and our
Treasurer, Patricia Johns, has a whole page to herself this month setting out the details
clearly for us all.
Remember, members can advertise for FREE in the MM. Feel free to share your astrology
or astrology related endeavours with us.You could be pleasantly surprised.
If any of you have a favourite topic and would like to have a little monthly column of your
own or maybe a “one off” article to include I would love to hear from you.
Warm regards,
Carol Jenkins

Planetary Sect with Samantha Bakewell
Part One:
If you know a little about Traditional Astrologers then you may have observed we spend a considerable
amount of time ascertaining what condition the seven visible planets are in. Sect is another extension
with regards to this factor.
An informative soft covered book on sect by author Robert S. Hand, called Night & Day Planetary Sect in
Astrology, is an excellent thorough and easy to understand text about the techniques and history. You can
find this in the FAAWA library. Chris Brennan is one of our leading Hellenistic Astrologers and you can
simply Google Planetary Sect by Chris Brennan, his explanation on sect is quick and concise and he has
chart examples showing how to apply sect to a natal chart.
You will want to use the whole house system when looking at this
technique.
The Latin word Seco means to divide.
There are two sects diurnal (daytime) and nocturnal (night time)
A diurnal chart is when the Sun is above the horizon.
A nocturnal chart is when the Sun is below the horizon.
Simply draw a line from the Ascendant to the Descendant this
establishes your individual horizon. Is the Sun above your horizon or
below? If the Sun is above horizon it is a diurnal chart and if it is
below it is a nocturnal chart.
Each sect has its very own team members. Whether the planets associated with the luminary of sect, the
Sun or Moon, is a good team player will depend on other factors incorporating sect, such as; on the
placement, what sign they are in, if it is Retrograde, and the aspect it makes.
Diurnal - Diurnal planets are the Sun, Jupiter, and Saturn
Nocturnal - Nocturnal planets are the Moon, Venus and Mars
Vettius Valens calls the above sect planets the co-workers and guardians.
These sect co-workers are the same in everyone’s chart.
Both diurnal and nocturnal have a luminary, a benefic, and a malefic. The diurnal sects are the superior
planets and nocturnal are the inferior planets.
When a planet is in sect, the chart supports what the planet represents. The malefic out of sect will cause
the disunity, challenges and discomfort for the native.
Out of sect malefic planets are our problem planets:
The diurnal out of sect planet is Mars
The nocturnal out of sect planet is Saturn

... NOTICES ...
Terry MacKinnell in Perth on Sunday 2nd
April 2017
More details on the format of the day.
3 stimulating “stand alone” parts.
Session 1: History of house systems in western astrology
This session will begin with the original house system employed by the Hellenistic astrologers and
outlines their evolution to the range of the most commonly used house systems by astrologers
today. This is not a technical session based on the different mathematics involved in dividing the
sky into the 12 houses developed over the last 2,000 years, but a contextual history.
Session 2: Donald Trump as a Guinea pig to examine house systems
From just before Donald Trump was elected president I have followed his path to presidency and
his performance since being president using lunar astrology. Lunar astrology is based upon the
monthly lunar cycle combined with full moons and embellished with eclipses. The quality of
insights provided by lunar astrology is, at a minimum, equal to the combined insights of all the
applicable transits to his natal chart. My experience is that lunar astrology is actually superior to
transits. The lunar insights will be used to delineate between major differences in available house
systems and is an example of qualitative research in astrology.
… (afternoon) …
Session 3: Where is the World Heading in the Age of Aquarius?
Society and politics are never static and in this session we will examine how socio-political and
cultural developments in the world are closely shadowing the sub-ages, sub-age decans, micro-
ages and micro-age decans within the Age of Aquarius. When examined from the perspective of
these sub-periods of the Age of Aquarius, there are no surprises or anomalies. This session will
incorporate some of the material I will be presenting at the January 2018 FAA conference in
Melbourne where I will be doing a talk “The Future of Western Society in the Age of Aquarius”

There are specific rules for Mercury the rules are as follows:
Diurnal charts
Mercury favours rising before the Sun, which is called oriental of the Sun, and in a masculine sign
Nocturnal charts
Mercury favours setting after the Sun, which is called occidental of the Sun, in a feminine sign
Mars is always a contentious issue for Astrologers to whether he rejoices in a masculine sign or feminine
sign. Many astrologers’ through-out time have contradicted whether Mars is in sect in a feminine sign
however at the current time I use Mars in a feminine sign.
More on sect (with Samantha Bakewell) in our next edition of the MM.
