Community Caring and Action Project (CAP)

GOAL: The whole of Mae Chaem watershed to become strong model communities. Supporting and promoting alternative livelihood in line with the forest protection and management plan in Mae Chaem watershed is becoming a crucial and challenging work at the moment for the project.

Objectives

1. Community engage in strengthening the capacities of watershed community organizations and networks for effective natural resources management altogether with public sectors in both local and national level

2. People in the community particularly women adopt sustainable agriculture practices through agricultural diversification and non-agriculture alternative occupations with local knowledge and resources being taken into account.

3. Children in rural poor schools are empowered to become lifelong learners who possess the necessary life skills, occupational skills as well as promote the role of indigenous knowledge and culture.

Objective 1: Community engage in strengthening the capacities of watershed community organizations and networks for effective natural resources management altogether with public sectors in both local and national level

Implementation Highlight- 21 village members are trained for GPS use.

- 5 GIS maps are completed

- 6 Communities are acknowledged of climate change adaptation and disaster risk

reduction, with disaster preparedness and prevention programs set in place. Forest

areas in the watershed communities are protected and restored.

- 3 Sub- district ordinance in natural resource and environment management is

implemented

Objective 2: People in the community particular women adopt sustainable agriculture practices through agricultural diversification and non-agriculture alternative occupations with local knowledge and resources being taken into account.

Implementation Highlight- The project supports 6 women groups in occupational activities benefiting 163

women .

- 50 household received support in efficient rice growing technique and

strategies due to climate change

- 196 households from 11 communities participate in system development for

increasing food source and income generating

Objective 3:Children in rural poor schools are empowered to become lifelong learners who possess the necessary life skills, occupational skills as well as promote the role of indigenous knowledge and culture.

Implementation Highlight

-In cooperation with 10 schools in Mae Chaem district, 417 students in grade 4-6 participate in capacity building training for self-recognition, learning about their own community, and having social awareness.

-There are developed 56 initiative project regarding local plants and livestock. For instant, local plants are grown organically.

Young Leadership Development Project (YLD)GOAL : strengthening youth leadership, life and occupational skills that enables students to cope with problems that may arise amidst changing social environment for poor rural students living in rural

communities in Nong Khai and Udonthani Provinces.Implementation Highlight5 schools are selected as “school models” transferring their knowledge/experiences to 15 network schools.

“Merck volunteer teachers” organize children learning activity visit 6 times.

15 schools administrators and 32 teachers have supported and become to be project facilitators.

761 students participate in doing their 65 mini-projects.

2 schools establish their own curriculums using child learning centered method. (Ban Tep Pra Tap and Ban Fah Pra Tan school

Objective 1: 2,000 Students in 15 small schools benefit from child centered learning process.

Implementation Highlight

- 1,728 children participate in the project through 1. Self-consciousness/perception building2. Sand environmental awareness building3. Learning-by-doing mini-projects

 - 761 children express their interests to do 65 mini projects and demonstrated their skills in occupational skills development, environment and social initiatives.  - The project has built capacity in leadership, teamwork, analytical and problem solving skills, and communication.

Objective 2: Teachers and school administrators in small schools adopt child-center learning methods.

Implementation Highlight

- 32 teachers have been trained to be project “facilitator” and understand the concept of child learning methods.

- 15 schools administrators are engaged in providing advices on how project implementation would become realistic in each school.  - 3 schools receive support from local agencies with communities.

Objective 3: Learning and sharing network on youth leadership is established.

Implementation Highlight

- Study visits are organized for 110 student leaders and 11 teachers.

- 5 model schools have clear work plan to work with 15 network schools and share project lesson learnt.

- 5 model schools have established the student club.

Flood Relief Project “Empowering women and children in flood recovery and preparedness in Ayutthaya”

Goal Communities and households affected by the floods are able to recover by increasing income, strengthening children’s support and building community resiliency.  

BeneficiariesThere are 517 flood-affected women and children in 4 communities of Bang Luang Doad Sub-Districts of Muang District in Ayuthaya benefited from project.

ProgressTargeted communities are becoming better prepared for future flood disasters and gradual rehabilitation of the target population and their family.

Implementation Highlight

The community female leaders presented their developed community disaster plan during the Project-supported “women and disaster” workshop, where 45 community female leaders from all four communities participated.

Implementation Highlight

Community environmental promotion activity organized activity with 70 community members and their leaders involved in the forestation within the sub-district in order to generate awareness on environmental conservation and disaster preparedness.

Implementation Highlight

This is a series of activities to reduce stress among flood-affected community children, and at the same time, build leadership skills as well as prepare community children for future flood disaster response and mitigation. There are 136 students attended in the activities. The children displayed their recommendations for community leaders regarding flood mitigation and preparedness

Implementation Highlight

Bang Luang Doad women group worked together in their income generating activity-- Krayasat Production. As the majority of these women are the main supporters of their own household, including those single mothers and head of household. Each group member earned 150 baht per day.
