One year removed from the program's first 30-win season since 2004, the2009 Mercer Bears softball team enters the year with the goal of qualifyingfor a fourth straight Atlantic Sun Championship and capturing the first con-ference title in program history. Head coach Mike Raynor trusts his squadhas the right mix of players to challenge for the 2009 A-Sun crown.

"We had a great fall practice period," Raynor said. "Our team talent isimproved overall, and along with players who have valuable Division Iexperience, some of our talented freshman will see extensive playing timefrom the very first pitch. Our team attitude is very positive, and if we stayhealthy and have a little luck on our side, good things could happen."

This year's Bears feature 14 returning letterwinners along with the additionof 10 newcomers, including 2007 class AAAAA State Champion andPitcher of the Year Kari Chambers. Raynor has also added former Mercerbaseball player Tyler Brown to the coaching staff. The biggest challengesfor Raynor and his coaches will be replacing first-team All-Atlantic Sun starJamie Madruga (who departed after graduating last spring) and finding away to mesh experienced players with incoming talent.

Pitching

In 2009, Raynor welcomes the return of six arms from a year ago, includ-ing A-Sun All-Freshman team selection, Jenni Holtz. Holtz joins seniorLacey Richardson, providing Raynor with a formidable duo that combinedfor 25 wins and over 300 strikeouts last season.

"[Holtz and Richardson] are a great one-two punch, and after that we'vegot a barn full of right-handers . . . We'll wait to see who among them willrise to the top," Raynor said.

Junior Nikki Bylak and sophomore Natalie Jones have the most experi-ence of the relievers as the two have combined to toss over 100 innings intheir Mercer careers. The team will count upon these two proven com-modities to handle some of the relief appearances.

Chambers looks to make a significant impact after transferring from Eastern Michigan, where the right-hander racked up73 strikeouts en route to five wins as a freshman last year.

Freshmen hurlers Jessie Holmes and Kerri Nidiffer are Georgia natives who will provide depth to the Bears’ pitchingresources.

Catcher

Two new faces will wear the Mercer protective masks this season, as sophomore Emi Sherrill and freshman Kristin Markoare expected to split time behind the plate. Sherrill and Marko, who both hail from the Peach State, are known for beingsmart defensive players that will add pop to the lineup.

Sophomore Anna Johnson is the most seasoned catcher on the roster, and the coaching staff will rely on the transfer fromSouth Carolina to play an important role offensively. Last year Johnson was a perfect seven-for-seven in stolen baseattempts.

Infield

In 2009, the Bears' first tier of defense will benefit from experienced players anchoring the corner positions.Starting for the Orange and Black at first base this season is senior Raynor. Raynor is recognized as a defensive stalwartin the A-Sun, only committing a handful of errors in 59 games played last year. Page Raynor will contribute on the offen-sive end as well, as the senior looks to improve upon her 2008 total of 28 hits.

Coach Raynor believes he needs sophomore Allison Jones as a frequent presence in the Mercer batting order this year.In the offseason, Jones prepared to make the switch from pitcher to first base to help the team.

"[Jones] is a very competitive player who is aggressive at the plate," Raynor said. "Look for her to be a day-in and day-outposition player."

Occupying third for Raynor's squad this season is senior Cassy Neilson, who started 45 games for the Bears last year."[Neilson] has worked hard and wants to go out with a bang in her senior year," Raynor said.

Earning the nod at second base will be Amanda Santa Maria, who makes the move to the right side of the infield this sea-

A-Sun All-Freshman team selectionJenni Holtz returns after posting 15 victories and 222 strikeouts in 2008.

son. The coaching staff believes Santa Maria is more suited for the second base position rather than her role as a shortstopa year ago.

Freshman Sara Stukes is slated to start the season at shortstop after coming to Mercer from Harrison High School inPowder Springs, Ga. "Stukes had a great fall. She brings a big bat, a solid glove and a big arm to the team,” Raynor said.“We have high expectations for her this season.”

Another newcomer who Raynor expects to see time in the lineup is Lilli Luke. “[Luke] is certainly capable of making a contri-bution offensively this year,” Raynor said.

Outfield

Back in 2009 are Holly Oglesbee, Jena Ellis, and Stacey Condra, who com-bined for 128 hits and 79 RBI in 2008.

"We are returning the whole outfield from last year, and there is certainly acomfort factor there," Raynor said about his returning trio of juniors.

Oglesbee, a first-team all-conference selection a season ago, has started114 of Mercer's 119 games over the last two seasons.

"Our starting outfielders have always worked very hard and continue to workhard offensively," Raynor said. "They will all be in big spots in our lineupand we must rely on them to produce again this year."

Mercer fans can also expect to see a pair of freshman outfielders, JennyGoodman and Megan Rutherford, to see substantial playing time. Raynorbelieves Goodman’s overall ability will add depth at centerfield, while heidentifies Rutherford as possibly the most athletic player on the team.

Schedule

Games against in-state powerhouses Georgia and Georgia Tech, and dou-ble-headers versus Auburn, Campbell and Jacksonville State will make upeight contests in which Mercer faces an opponent who appeared in theNCAA softball championship last season.

"We are very excited about our 2009 schedule," Raynor said. "Nine of theopponents on our schedule played in postseason play in either of the pasttwo years. The aggressive schedule should help us get ready to compete inthe always tough, and getting tougher Atlantic Sun Conference."

The Bears open the season facing Savannah State in a double-header atSikes Field on Feb. 7 before heading to Georgia Southern for play in a non-conference tournament against Troy and GSU (Feb. 14-15).

Mercer returns to Statesboro for the GSU Eagle Classic on Feb. 20-22. Aside from GSU, other teams participating in thetournament are Radford, Hampton and Oakland.

Mercer will also participate in the 2009 Georgia Tech Buzz Classic held on March 6-8. Also traveling to Atlanta for the BuzzClassic are Indiana State, UT-Martin, Howard and Boston College.

"Our in-state rivals will present opportunities to show off our program while playing some very good competition," Raynorsaid. "Two tournaments at GSU and one at Georgia Tech will give us an idea of how much progress we are making early inthe season."

Following the game with Troy in Statesboro, the Bears return home for a twin-bill against Jacksonville State on Feb. 18. Themeeting will mark the program's eleventh all-time meeting against the Gamecocks, who were eliminated by Alabama in theTuscaloosa, Ala. regional final a year ago.

Mercer will play 17 non-conference games at home this season, including double headers versus Furman (Feb. 26), AustinPeay (Mar. 10), Alabama State (Mar. 11), Georgia State (Mar. 17), and a three-game set against Samford (Apr. 29-30) toclose the regular season.

In 2009 the Bears will also tackle a formidable non-conference road schedule, taking on Florida A&M (Feb. 24), Auburn(Mar. 3), Presbyterian (Mar. 14) and Georgia (Mar. 25).

Mercer begins Atlantic Sun Conference action on Mar. 21, hosting Kennesaw State. The Bears will play double-headers ver-sus each of their A-Sun opponents, including a trip to Buies Creek, N.C., to challenge 2008 A-Sun Champion Campbell on

THIS IS THEATLANTIC SUN CONFERENCE

For 30 years theAtlantic SunConference has stoodfor achievement withintegrity in both theacademic and athleticarenas, with a focus onthe balance betweenthe two for its student-athletes. The A-Sun

consists of a blend of the Southeast's most dynamic and presti-gious private universities and public institutions in the region;the conference commits itself to Building Winners for Life.

The experience for a student-athlete in the A-Sun is supportedby the entire university community, from coaches to faculty, andfrom the CEOs to the athletic and academic support staff. WithAll-America selections, National All-Academic honorees, teamsand individuals qualifying for and advancing in NCAAChampionship play, Atlantic Sun student-athletes achieve at thehighest levels of collegiate athletics.

ACADEMIC SUCCESS

For the second straight year, all 11 institutions placed at least50 percent of its student-athletes on the All-Academic Team. The membership also established a new overall record of 59percent of all student-athletes earning All-Academic status dur-ing the 2007-08 academic year.

Belmont proved to be the class of the conference in capturingthe All-Academic Trophy for the sixth time in seven years with70.3% of the student-athletes earning All-Academic status.Justin Hare, one of the most celebrated Bruin student-athletes,earned the conference's male Scholar Athlete of the Year for thesecond straight year, in addition to multiple national scholarhonors.

Hare was far from alone when it came to national honors, asJacksonville's Anton Axelsson, the conference Player of theYear in men's soccer earned CoSIDA's Academic All-America ofthe Year. Overall, 25 student-athletes earned places on the2007-08 CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-DistrictTeams.

ATHLETIC SUCCESS

Men's basketball garnered unprecedented attention with upsetsof nationally-ranked Kentucky and Southern Cal, plus a win atCincinnati in a four-day span. The feats earned a full-page fea-ture from USA Today, as well as notoriety from ESPN.com, TheSporting News and Rivals.com. The league added wins againstSEC foes Georgia and Alabama during the course of the year.Belmont captured the A-Sun Tournament title for the thirdstraight season, becoming the first A-Sun school to ever do soand enters 2008-09 as one of just six schools in the country tohave won its league's championship in each of the previousthree seasons. Among the company Belmont keeps in thisachievement are the two finalists from the NCAA Tournament,Kansas and Memphis.

Lipscomb, Belmont's Nashville rival, provided a pair of memo-rable moments on the baseball diamond. The Bisons secured

their first NCAA Tournament appearance by defeating Gardner-Webb in the A-Sun Championship game 9-8 in a 15-inningmarathon, the longest conference title game in Division I history. Then, they drew Georgia for their opening NCAA Championshipgame, and despite allowing four runs in the first inning, cameback to stun the eventual national runner-up Bulldogs 10-7.

The league's four newest members, Kennesaw State, NorthFlorida, Florida Gulf Coast and South Carolina Upstate allenjoyed successes in 2007-08. Kennesaw State captured its firstwomen's soccer tournament championship and advanced to theNCAA Tournament for the first time in school history. The Owlsalso added titles in men's indoor and outdoor track and field.North Florida won its first A-Sun title of any kind, erasing a nine-stroke deficit in the final two days to dethrone East TennesseeState in men's golf.

Florida Gulf Coast and South Carolina Upstate each made itsfirst year in the conference memorable, combining to win threeoutright regular-season titles and sharing in two others. TheEagles finished atop the standings in volleyball, baseball and tiedfor the softball title. The women's hoops team, one year removedfrom the Division II national title game, won 22 games includingan opening round game in the WNIT, the first postseason win foran A-Sun school in ten years. The Spartans turned in an unblem-ished women's tennis campaign for their first-ever A-Sun title inany sport.

East Tennessee State featured two top individual efforts as golferGareth Shaw made the cut at the NCAA Championship andhelped Europe win the Palmer Cup, a Ryder Cup-style event fea-turing the top collegiate golfers. He garnered All-America statusfor both his play and his academic achievement. Buccaneer ten-nis star Enrique Olivares won two matches at the NCAA men'ssingles championship, joining his coach, Yaser Zaatini, as theonly two in school history to make the Sweet 16 and earn All-America honors.

Jacksonville's dynamic duo of Natasha Harvey and ShaquaniaLundy carried the Dolphins to indoor and outdoor track and fieldtitles. They finished one-two in five events at the two champi-onships, and finished first and second at the NCAA EastRegional in the long jump. Harvey earned All-America honors inboth indoor and outdoor track, finishing in the top three at bothchampionships. The two competed for the chance to representtheir country at the 2008 Olympic Trials. Harvey would don theteam USA colors at the North American-Central American-Caribbean under-23 championships, taking second in the longjump.

What distinguishes a good university from a great universi-ty extends far beyond the boundaries of its curriculum and itscampus.

The competence and character of an institution's graduatesare, more often than not, the hallmarks by which its reputationis both earned and measured.

As a private, co-educational institution, Mercer Universityhas emerged as one of the premier universities in the Southeastand the nation.

Mercer is truly a dynamic and comprehensive center ofundergraduate, graduate and professional education. Mercer'soutstanding faculty take students beyond the rigors of academ-ic programs to explore the challenges of reason, responsibility, compassion and character.

Through learning, living and leading, Mercer students areprepared not only to confront, but also to embrace the chal-lenges of their future.

Under the leadership of prominent Georgia Baptist leaderJesse Mercer, Mercer University was founded in Penfield, Ga., in1833 and later moved to Macon in 1871. From its humble begin-nings as a small liberal arts college, Mercer now offers programsin 11 schools and colleges.

Conveniently located in the middle of the state, Maconserves as the educational, medical, cultural and commercial hubof central Georgia. Located just one hour from Atlanta - one ofthe nation's most popular international cities - and two hoursfrom the Atlantic coast, Macon is easily accessible from twointerstate highways - I-75 and I-16.

Consistently ranked by U.S. News & World Report and ThePrinceton Review among the nation's leading universities,Mercer considers one of its strengths to be its superior faculty, who "teach from the heart."

At Mercer, students benefit from learning experiences guid-ed by caring faculty, not teaching assistants found at many uni-versities as is the case at many universities. The HigherEducation Research Institute at UCLA recently named Mercer asa "highly selective" university, and The Princeton Review hasplaced Mercer among the Best 351 Colleges in North America.

The University is comprised of the College of Liberal Arts,Eugene W. Stetson School of Business and Economics, School ofEngineering, Tift College of Education, Walter F. George Schoolof Law, School of Medicine, Southern School of Pharmacy, Jamesand Carolyn McAfee School of Theology, Georgia Baptist Collegeof Nursing, Townsend School of Music and College of Continuingand Professional Studies. The University also operates theMercer University Press in Macon and the Mercer Engineering

Research Center in Warner Robins.Mercer's enrollment is nearly 7,050 students. While many

students come from the Southeast, more than 38 states and 30countries are represented among the student body. The averageclass size at Mercer is 25, with a student/faculty ratio of 15:1 -unusually low for a major university.

Campus LifeEven with its picturesque setting, the spirit of Mercer is not
