After many months of work, the Mercer Island School District is approaching a final proposal for a bond to send to the com-munity for a vote next year. The district has held several ‘listening sessions’ with the public and has gathered input in a variety of ways over the past 15 months.

A new bond to rebuild Island schools has taken shape. The dol-lar amount is less and the changes less dramatic. Many who vehe-

mently opposed the first bond sent to the voters last year have now joined in supporting the pro-posal.

The amount of new construc-tion has been scaled back to reflect voters’ view that the first bond was simply too much and that not enough detail was avail-able to justify the amount. Many felt that the remodeled schools still have several years of life left in them.

The amount of the bond has been reduced substantially from $196 million, turned down by voters in April of 2012, to under $100 million.

The latest proposal includes a new elementary school adjacent

to the high school campus for approximately 500 students with a developmental preschool, for $42 million; an extensive renovation, rebuild and expansion at Islander Middle School for $49 million; and a 10-classroom addition to Mercer Island High School for $11.6 million.

An amount of $3.8 million of state dollars will reduce the total amount to be paid for by local dollars.

by former city mayor, Jim Pearman, in 2012.

Senn had put in her name a year before for the seat left vacant by Steve Litzow when he was elect-ed to the Washington state Legislature. Jane Meyer Brahm was selected then.

Senn and her family have lived on the Island since 2005.

She is already slated to run unopposed for her City Council seat in November.

Senn plans on retain-ing her seat on the City Council for now and will decide later if she will stand for election to the Senate in November.

Contributed PhotoOn the night before the first day of school, dozens of seniors’ parents took up chalk and drew messages in their sons’ and daughters’ parking spaces, to be an early morning surprise.“We all created beautiful, personalized messages in each of our child’s parking spots,” Lois Fuhr, a parent of a senior, said. “There was talk of rain in the forecast, but we carried on in the hopes it would hold off until the seniors arrived to school. But a major thunder and lightening storm over-night washed away all these wonderful designs. But the rain can’t wash away the love we have for all of them and the pride we have in being their parents.”

Washington state senators want to hear from you Lawmakers to conduct statewide ‘Listening Tour’ on transportation funding issue

By Reporter Sta

State senators are conducting a statewide listening tour to hear from citizens about state transportation funding.

A special legislative session for transporta-tion funding may be held in November or December.

The Senate Majority Coalition is also pro-posing a series of reforms to go along with any new funding.

One of the reforms would require that toll revenues be used only for projects on the road ‘corridor’ in which the tolls are collected.

Information about the listening tour and proposed reforms are available at http://src.wastateleg.org.

True Value dog ‘Willow’ has died

By Reporter Sta Willow, an Australian

shepherd and enduring mascot of the Mercer Island True Value store, died Aug. 16. She was a pet and com-panion of Islander store owner, De Calvert. Willow was a familiar and friendly presence at the hardware store where she greeted shoppers for more than 15 years.

Willow was born March 28, 1998. In June, she started going to work with Calvert.

“She has been with me almost every working day of my life,” Calvert said.

“If I was sick and had to stay home, someone would come and take her to the store,” she added.

According to dog experts, Aussies are working animals bred to herd livestock. The high-energy dogs need pur-pose in their lives, like a job.

The dog had been ill in February, but had gotten better, Calvert said, clearly saddened by the loss. The breed’s life expectancy is 12 to 15 years.

The blue-eyed dog was named Miss March for the 2007 PAWS calendar.

When Jessica Buchanan sought out Martin Literary Management for assistance with writing her memoir, Anthony Flacco and his wife and partner, Sharlene Martin, provided a poten-tial list of writers.

But after reviewing Flacco’s short version of how he would write the story, Buchanan and her husband, Erik Landemalm, made their choice.

While other writers planned to emphasize the Navy SEALs who rescued Buchanan out of the Somali desert, Flacco saw the arc of the story as a love story.

“The beautiful thing is that she was determined to have a family with her husband, Erik,” Flacco said. “That is what kept her alive; that thought.”

Before Buchanan was taken hostage by Somali gunmen, a group of pirates, she thought that she was pregnant. She was not, but “Impossible Odds: The Kidnapping of Jessica Buchanan and Her Dramatic Rescue by SEAL

Team Six” is dedicated to the couple’s baby who was born after the harrowing ordeal. His name is August, and he is now 11 months old.

Major news outlets and talk shows have car-ried Buchanan’s story. The book, co-authored by Flacco, Buchanan and Landemalm, ranked no. 13 on the New York Times nonfiction bestseller list within a month of its publi-cation, no. 6 on the e-book nonfiction bestseller list, and no. 7 in the Wall Street Journal.

Buchanan’s first TV appearance with “60 Minutes” will re-air on CBS this Sunday, Sept. 15.

“The reason this book is called ‘Impossible Odds’ is that this never should have worked,” said Flacco, who is the editorial consultant for Island-based Martin Literary Management. He has published five nonfic-tion books and three his-torical novels.

Heart attack survival rate con-tinues to climb in King County

The survival rate from cardiac arrest in King County has reached an all-time high of 57 percent, according to a new report released by King County. Most other parts of the nation have survival rates that hover around 10 per-cent.

In 2012, the EMS sys-tem in King County responded to 172,700 calls to 911, including 48,010 for Advanced Life Support (ALS), the most serious or life-threatening injuries and illnesses.

Response times average 7.5 minutes.

“Survival from cardiac arrest is the signature of quality for any EMS/Medic One system, and we con-

tinue to set the standard,” said Dr. David Fleming, Director and Health Officer for Public Health – Seattle & King County.

The King County EMS/Medic One system is man-aged by the Emergency Medical Services Division of Public Health – Seattle & King County, and relies on a close partnership of thousands of profession-als with fire departments, paramedic agencies, EMS dispatch centers and hospi-tals to provide emergency care and save lives.

The full EMS 2013 Annual Report is available at www.kingcounty.gov/health/ems.

State upgrades voter registration program

The Office of the Secretary of State and Washington’s 39 county

auditors will begin updat-ing over 53,000 voter reg-istration records and mail voter registration informa-tion to more than 140,000 potentially eligible, but unregistered residents.

Updating such a large number of records and conducting focused regis-tration education recently has become possible, thanks to the Electronic Registration Information Center (ERIC).

“We need to continue modernizing our voter reg-istration system to be more accurate, cost-effective and efficient,” Secretary of State Kim Wyman said.

States have conducted “list maintenance” pro-grams since at least 1993, but there is room for improvement, especially with the technology avail-able to elections officials today, she said.

The secretary of state will mail eye-catching and informative postcards con-taining information on how to register to vote to residents who don’t appear to be registered.

The secretary’s office mailed similar postcards last fall and as a result, many errors in individual records were corrected.

For more, go to www.sos.wa.gov/elections. The 2013 general election is Nov. 5.

Over 1,000 tickets in six weeks to distracted drivers

King County law enforcement agencies issued more than 1,100 citations over the past six weeks to drivers for the use of cellular phones.

Law enforcement agen-cies throughout King County participated in emphasis patrols that tar-geted drivers who were using cellular phones, tex-ting or involved in other behavior that affected their ability to drive in a safe manner.

“Despite warnings in the media, we still found a lot of drivers without their full attention on the road,” said State Patrol Lt. Mike Rupert.

Law enforcement made more than 2,300 contacts with drivers, which includ-ed driving while suspend-ed and DUI. Officers also arrested subjects with felo-ny warrants and recovered two stolen vehicles.

In Washington state, drivers are prohibited from texting or talking on their cellular phones without the use of a hands-free device. The fine for this violation begins at $124. Any drivers under the age of 18 are not allowed to use any cellular phone device.

with the Danish Refugee Council, she was returning from training with her col-league, Poul Hagen Thisted, when their vehicle was hijacked by Somali terrorists carrying AK-47s.

For 93 days, the pair was held hostage in the desert. They were rescued by Navy SEALs who staged a night-time raid.

When Flacco finished the first draft of the book, Buchanan said that it didn’t sound scary enough.

“She wanted people to know the depth of her ter-ror,” Flacco said. “We finally got it.”

Flacco spent hours inter-viewing Buchanan and Landemalm nearly every day for two months over Skype.

“If you’re doing it right, you have to feel the pain,”

Flacco said. “You have to put yourself in the emotional place. I was having to live in the emotional place of those scenes.”

Buchanan grew up in rural Ohio and attend-ed a Christian college in Pennsylvania. She had been working in Africa for five years, teaching English and educating children about how to avoid land mines.

“This book has freshened my awareness of the kind of courage and integrity that exists, that the popular media, in my opinion, would have you believe is gone,” said Flacco, who recently completed a movie script for the book.

“We have a lot of interest from studios, and it will be coming out soon,” he said.

To the editorConsider later start time at Mercer Island High School

I feel compelled to speak up about con-sidering a later start time for MIHS students in the future. My seventh-grader already has difficulty staying awake for first period, and I am loath to think how much more dif-ficult it may be for him in the coming years at MIHS, which begins 20 minutes earlier than middle school.

He’s certainly a respectful student, so I feel terrible when his teacher last year said he sometimes nodded off in first period. Although he gets to bed early and eats breakfast, the early start just doesn’t suit his growing body. A later start time in high school is also supported by Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, as stated in his press release dated Sept. 5, 2013.

I know there is opposition from parents, stating that after-school activities and par-ent schedules conflict with a later start time. But I would counter that educational excellence should be the priority, as Arne states below.

“Study after study has shown mornings are very difficult [for teenagers],” Duncan told the program. “They’re not very awake — they’re groggy, they’re not able to pay attention in class,” he said.

Starting later would increase teens’ chances of being focused and concentrating so that they can get more out of their school day, he said.

“So often in education, we design school systems that work for adults and not for kids,” he said, citing current high school hours as “another example of that.”

Emily Thompson

School supporter Kevin Scheid for City Council

Our schools are a crucial part of the Mercer Island community because they

play a major role in our children’s future. Moreover, the success of our schools enhances property values, attracts new res-idents and creates a vibrancy for everyone. Our schools also depend on sound deci-sions from our local government on issues that pertain to transportation, parks, bond ratings, development and infrastructure.

I encourage you to support Kevin Scheid for Mercer Island City Council. Kevin’s management credentials are solid. He received his engineering degree from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy and his MBA from Purdue University. Kevin recently retired as the head of U.S. Coast Guard Search and Rescue for Washington and Oregon. In this capacity, he gathered extensive and widespread experience in environmental concerns, emergency pre-paredness, law enforcement and oversee-ing large budgets.

In their 19 years on the Island, the Scheids strongly supported schools as their four children graduated from Mercer Island High School. Kevin continues to support the schools and recognizes the need to solve the overcrowding prob-lem. Furthermore, for the high school to continue progressing and excelling in all academic areas, he strongly endorses the additional facilities for the STEM cur-riculum. He supports the approach and efforts of the Mercer Island School Board in addressing these problems. There is no question that Kevin will work hard to ben-efit the entire community.

Please join me in putting a new voice of experienced leadership onto the Council by voting for Kevin Scheid.

Jan Sayers

Support candidate Scheid, who says no to any tolls

We appreciate fellow Mercer Islanders who step up to serve on our City Council. At the same time, we feel the community is best served when we have the opportu-nity to have new voices on the Council,

especially on such important issues as the I-90 tolling. On this critical issue, our com-munity, off-Island clientele, and employers are deeply concerned about the prospect of tolling. Kevin Scheid, the clear No Tolling candidate for a seat on the City Council, states that “No one should have to pay a toll on one road to finance another road.”

Kevin’s approach to I-90 tolls makes sense and will prevent tolls for everyone. His opponent’s “fair toll” approach will compromise our legal defense and ensure that everyone is tolled! We’re for No Tolls, not “fair tolls.”

Kevin Scheid has managed multi-million dollar budgets, and is vice president of a Mercer Island-based firm specializing in leadership and management consulting. He has an engineering degree from the Coast Guard Academy and an MBA from Purdue University. Kevin’s leadership has been felt as well on Mercer Island, where he has coached Boys & Girls Club sports,

served as a member of the High School Site Committee, was a member of the interview committee for the high school principal, and has chaired the Mercer Island Girls Lacrosse Board. As 19-year residents, Kevin and his wife, Bobette, are strong advocates for the schools where all four of their chil-dren attended, and graduated from Mercer

Island High School. Bobette Scheid is also a community leader serving as the cur-rent president of the Mercer Island Women’s Club.

Former Mercer Island mayor and state senator Jim Horn, in addition to City Councilmembers Mike

Grady and Mike Cero, endorse Kevin. Councilmember Cero stated, “Political leaders outside Mercer Island are watching this election. They will see a Scheid win as a signal Islanders are committed to stopping I-90 tolling.”

Premier Periodontics opens new office on Mercer Island

By Megan [email protected]

Premier Periodontics has opened a new office on Mercer Island.

The company, which specializes in all areas of periodontics, has offices in Bellevue and Kirkland, and now has added Mercer Island to its list of local communities.

The office, located at 2817 80th Ave. S.E., fea-tures Dr. Caroline Herron, who recently joined the practice.

“It’s been an ideal place and it was a great opportu-nity,” said Herron.

Herron previously worked at a clinic in Burien, but has family who lives on Mercer Island, which made joining the team and work-ing from the Mercer Island office a great fit.

Herron said they are a

full-service practice, offer-ing everything from tradi-tional periodontic services to surgical services and implant placement.

“We’re here for all the treatments that they need,” said Herron. She said their mission is to help patients and offer a high level of excellence and integrity.

The clinic is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Herron will be available to see patients on Wednesdays and Fridays. Those hours will expand, Herron said, as the practice grows.

“We really want to cater to the community here,” said Herron.

Herron said they plan to hold a grand opening at some point in the future, but no date has been set.

“We’re working with general dentists in the area and hope to coordinate with them and invite the community,” she said.

Contact Premier Periodontics by calling (206) 232-0683 or by vis-iting www.premierperi-odontics.com.

The new playground at Luther Burbank Park near the Parks and Recreation building is nearly complete. As part of the 2013-2014 Capital Improvement Program, the aging play structure at Luther Burbank Park has been replaced with new equipment, including a zip line, climbing web, improved slides, merry go-round, and safety surfacing. The walkway and finishing details are still being wrapped up, but the new playground is now open. Private donations and a public-private partnership with the Mercer Island Preschool Association made this project a reality.Parks superintendent Jason Kitner said the grand opening celebration of the new play-ground will be announced and take place sometime this month.Got a photo you’d like to share with the Island in our “Eye on MI” feature? another measles case reported

Local public health offi-cials have confirmed a mea-sles infection in a child who was in King County during the contagious period.

The child is a King County resident who was incom-pletely vaccinated — with only one of the recommend-ed two doses of vaccine at an age earlier than recommend-ed — and was exposed to a sibling who had the measles, whose case was previously announced by public health officials. The child was at several Eastside tennis ven-ues on Aug. 28 and 29.

Because most people in this area have immunity to the measles through vaccina-tion, the risk to the general public is low and outdoor exposure locations carry lower risk. However, all peo-ple who were in the locations around the same time as the individual with measles should check to make sure they have been vaccinated.

For information on this and other recent cases of measles, go to the King County Health Department, at www.kingcounty.gov/healthservices/health/com-municable/diseases/measles.aspx.

Marijuana rules to allocate stores by population

The Washington State Liquor Control Board (WSLCB) has approved the filing of proposed supple-mental rules that, if ulti-mately enacted, will help govern Washington state’s system of producing, pro-cessing and retailing recre-ational marijuana.

The board has determined that a maximum of 334 retail outlets will be allowed state-wide. Per Initiative 502, the WSLCB retail store locations will be determined by using state population figures with a cap on the number of retail stores per county.

Given that formula, one outlet could be placed on Mercer Island.

Fewer stopped for DUI in August

Over a period of 17 days beginning late last month, 292 motorists in King

County were stopped and arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs (DUI). Last year in King County during the same time period, officers on routine and extra patrols arrested 374 people for DUI.

The ‘Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over’ enforcement campaign was conducted statewide from Aug. 16 through Sept. 2.

August is one of the deadliest months on Washington’s roadways, including all causes of traf-fic fatalities. Across the state, last month, law enforcement officers arrested 1,420 driv-ers for DUI, including King

County.State and federal grant

money paid for the extra patrols with more than two dozen police departments, including Mercer Island and the Washington State Patrol.

Some old themes from the campaign and defeat of the original bond lingered. Along with cost, the idea that most buildings are still sufficient and worth saving is still part of the discus-sion.

When superintendent Gary Plano related some issues with the contractor for the newly remodeled music space at the high school, Islander Dwight Schaeffer commented that such hassles were anoth-er reason “to leave good enough alone.”

When discussing the need for a larger multi-purpose room at the school to eliminate the three-lunch period issue, Ira Appelman asked why the west wall of the space couldn’t simply be expanded outward. Plano was quick to point out that he believed it would not be a good use of taxpayer money.

“Why didn’t we save the old ‘mushroom’ (struc-ture) at the high school?” he asked. “Why should we pay to maintain an old, out-dated school?”

Those who support the bond, however, are con-

cerned that the initial esti-mates for construction on these areas have increased by a third. They are wor-ried that they will not be able to convince voters that the new plans are the right way to go.

Former bond opponent, Ralph Jorgenson, said he now supports the bond, saying that the new propos-al is backed up by specifics.

“They did it right this time,” he said. “We needed those ‘ed specs’ to be able to see where the money would go.”

But he also said the new construction estimates

bother him. They have increased. He wanted to know how he was going to “sell” the new amount to skeptical voters.

Design consultants and school officials say it is the timing.

Others are worried that the scaled-down plans are merely to make sure that the bond issue passes.

“Will this be a Band-Aid?” asked one parent who supported the first bond measure. “Will this meet our kids’ needs? Or is this amount to make sure (Islanders) pass it this time?”

District finance direc-tor Dean Mack pointed to two factors that drove changes in plan costs.

The first, he said, was the change in the economy. When the plans were first put together, he explained, the country was in a major recession and interest rates were low. Construction activity dropped dramati-cally, and many companies were offering their services at greatly reduced rates, downsizing and laying off workers or simply going out of business.

Next, interest rates were significantly lower, he added, meaning that the cost of borrowing also fell. Those interest rates have rebounded somewhat, increasing the cost of bor-rowing money.

Now that the economy has picked up steam, fewer contractors are available to bid for business. Many are already busy. As a result, bids have gone up. Also quite notable is that new energy codes enacted

recently and site require-ments for dealing with stormwater and drain-age issues on the land also increase the project cost.

Another listening ses-sion held the next day at the old North Mercer gym concerned the elemen-tary school to be built there. It will be the fourth such school and will hold about 500 students. Some 40 people came to talk to Islanders about the project. They again had questions regarding cost and design. Many who came the previ-ous evening attended that session as well.

The new school will take over the property occu-pied by Youth Theatre Northwest, the old North Mercer gym and the build-ing that houses CHILD and Country Village Day School, at the corner of S.E. 40th Street and 86th Avenue S.E. It will also be

close to the Boys & Girls Club PEAK building.

At the regular School Board meeting on the morning of Aug. 29, Jorgenson, David D’Souza and Schaffer all spoke of the changes in the proposal that have emerged over the past several months. Those changes, most importantly in the area of more spe-cifics on the design, have brought them to support a new bond amount.

D’Souza noted that the school district has done a great deal of work since the bond was defeated.

“We cannot dismiss all the work that has gone on to (refine) this present pro-posal,” he said.

By Reporter StaAugust was hot, but not

in the way that we usually measure heat. Weather blog-gers noted that the average daily low temperature last month was the highest of any month in Seattle since record keeping began back in 1891. Simply put, at just a tick under 60 degrees, no month in the last 112 years has ever been warmer at night than last month.

In the real estate market, the number of Island homes

whose sales were final last month were up by nearly 10 percent from a year ago.

As a result, the number of homes active on the market as of Labor Day were down.

According to Northwest Multiple Listing Service numbers, 38 new homes were added to the market during August 2012, mak-ing a total of 104 homes available for sale that month.

This year, the same num-ber of homes and condos

were added to the market in August. But as quickly as homes were added, homes were sold. As a result, just 57 were counted as active for the entire month.

The number of pending sales during the month also jumped 72 percent to 38 units, up from 22 in process a year ago.

The median price for final home sales went up as well, from $587,500 to $975,000 — a 72 percent increase from over a year

ago.What is more difficult to

ascertain is how long such a trend will last.

With higher demand for Island homes, and the lower inventory, it makes sense that prices are trending higher — all of the ingre-dients that might make for a tighter real estate market. But what about those inter-est rates?

Mike Gain, the CEO and president of Prudential Northwest Realty Associates, said many industry watchers predict-ed that rising interest rates would slow down the mar-ket.

“Well, it has not because despite jumps in prices and interest rates, homes are still more affordable than they have been in decades,” he said. He stated that buy-ers are on “heightened alert” because of the recent upward movement in inter-est rates.

Darin Stenvers, a direc-tor with Northwest MLS, offered advice to sellers who have unrealistic expecta-tions.

“Sellers should still be concerned about overpric-ing their homes,” he empha-sized. “Some markets may handle the overpricing; oth-ers will not,” he noted, add-ing, “While sales are brisk, many sellers are not getting the full listing price.”

The team, Swimmers Saving MI-llions, was the top fundraising team in the area and raised $25,000 for the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance. Team captain Sabrina Steinhauer was the top individual fundraiser, bringing in over $10,000. The group includes former Islander and Olympic champion, Mary Wayte. T h u r s d a y night. The game, set for T h u r s d a y evening, has been canceled. Thanks to some unfor-tunate timing,

the Mercer Island foot-ball team will play only eight games this season, one less than usual.

T h e Islanders were originally scheduled to play a non-conference opponent this Friday, but after the origi-nal team wasn’t available, the Islanders started looking for a new team to play.

Making things more com-plicated, the observance of Yom Kippur, which begins on the evening of Sept. 13, would have moved this week’s game to either Thursday, Sept. 12, or Saturday, Sept. 14. Unfortunately, this close to the beginning of the sea-son, few teams were available on Friday, let alone available to play on a Thursday or Saturday during the regular season.

Mercer Island will play its first home game on Friday, Sept. 20 — homecoming — against Lake Washington.

There will be just three home games this year.

By Megan ManaganI learned long ago some

stories are harder to write than others. Whatever the reason, sometimes the words won’t flow the way I want.

That’s the case with this column, my last as a reporter for the Mercer Island Reporter.

I’ve been offered the chance to build a sports depart-ment from the ground up at a local newspaper closer to home — an offer that was too good to say no to. Last week was my last with the Reporter.

In the almost five years I’ve worked here, I’ve covered thousands of games, written even more stories, taken tons of pho-tos and watched middle schoolers join high school teams and graduate from high school.

It would be pretty hard to pick out top moments of working on Mercer Island — from my first day, get-ting car sick somewhere on East Mercer Way during a tour around the Island, to wrapping up the fall sports previews for the final time last week.

Thanks to the stellar teams the Islanders have had, I’ve had the oppor-tunity to go to just about every state tournament

there is and I’ve seen the true excitement and joy that winning those tourna-ments can bring. I’ve also had a sideline seat for some tough defeats. No matter the outcome, it has never failed to surprise me how amazingly smart, kind and good-willed the people are here.

It will be extremely weird to head anyplace other than the MIHS on a Friday night in the fall, or hit the gym to watch back-to-back bas-ketball games in the winter.

As a former band geek myself, I’ve always appreciated the top-notch per-formances of the MIHS marching band.

In many ways, I’ve felt more a part of this com-munity than anywhere else in a long time. This is

the longest I’ve been in one spot since graduating high school. Now it’s time for a new chapter.

Thank you to my fabu-lous co-workers, both past and present, for making the office a fun place to spend my working life, and to my wonderful family for putting up with my weird hours and the general craziness that comes with having a journalist in the family.

Last but certainly not least, a big thank you to all the readers, teams and people who have been the inspiration for so many of my stories. Muses like that make all the difference.

Island tennis players take sectional titles

Two Island tennis play-ers recently competed in the USTA Pacific Northwest Sectional tour-nament in Oregon.

Sasha Cayward and Chris Elliot competed at the tournament held in August in Beaverton, Ore.

Cayward won two titles, winning the singles and doubles competition in the girls 14 division, while Elliot won in the boys singles and doubles in the boys 12 division.

Both players train at the Mercer Island Country Club.

The sectional tourna-ment is the largest in the

Pacific Northwest, featur-ing 435 junior players from the area.

Senior tailback Bryce Steckler scored all four of Redmond High’s touchdowns to lead the Mustangs to a 28-20 season-opening vic-tory over Mercer Island High School on Friday night.

Steckler rumbled into the end zone from 20 yards and 4 yards out in the first quarter, and from 14 yards and 1 yard out in the second quarter, and staked Redmond to a 28-7 lead at halftime.

Also in the first, Islander Alex Bell scored on a 54-yard pass from quarterback Alfonso Gonzalez. In the second half, Mercer Island scored on a pair of end zone runs; a 3-yard (Gonzalez) and 5-yard (Kalen Hopkins), one each in the third and fourth quarters, but Redmond held on for the home nonleague win.

Redmond had 223 total yards rushing.
