Providing a Future and a Hope for Youth
Pure and undefiled religion in the sight of our God and Father
is this: to visit orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself unstained by the world. – James 1:27
mission:“We exist to love at-risk children, by providing Christian adult volunteers, of character and vision, to become their role models and companions.”
Objectives:1. To proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ to our community by training mentors in expressing the love of Christ with words and life and matching them with at-risk children.
2. To focus on the needs of the children from single-parent households by continually recruiting, evaluating, and monitoring the fruit of our mentoring program and the current needs of the at-risk children.
3. To extend the ministry of mentoring to the area around us by building partnerships and networks with local, statewide, and national mentoring organizations.
4. To be dependent, as individuals and an organization, upon Jesus Christ and His Word for the direction and strength to fulfi ll our mission.

PROVIDING A FUTURE AND A HOPE FOR YOUTH
One-to-One Mentoring acknowledges God’s longing love for the fatherless children and gives
Christians an opportunity to join God in administering this love to them. Mentors commit to
spending 1 hour a week with their mentee. Our children are between the ages of 6 and 14
when they are initially matched. Their weekly meetings are activity and relationship based such
as: shooting baskets, going fi shing, baking cookies, and scrapbooking. But the one commonality
of these meetings is that as mentors pray-up and show up, the children experience the love of
their heavenly Father. We also host a monthly activity for all the matches where everyone can be
encouraged and have fun getting to know each other.
The mothers of our mentees have a special place in our hearts. Over 75% of our children have
single moms, while the remaining live their dads, a grandparent, or guardian. We want to see
our mothers thrive in all areas of their lives and so we have begun to have a time for them to
interact with each other and women who have gone through similar situations. We are also
working with area churches who have single mother or mother’s ministries. If our single moms
are interested in a more one-to-one relationship, we are also setting up a mentor for them.
Our Bridge Teams are ministries within churches that
we have helped establish. MentorKids KY trains and
oversees a team of volunteers who act as staff to recruit
for mentors and youth, interview prospective mentors,
and supervise matches. MKK provides everything
necessary, as well as background checks and continual
oversight.
MentorKids KY is pioneering efforts to reach out
in Daviess County and Kentucky, uniting mentoring-
related programs to best serve families in need.
We have begun the Kentucky Christian Mentoring
Community with the vision of “working together to
reach more.”

7Mentoring Matters
DAVIESS COUNTY KENTUCKYhas a signifi cant number of children from fatherless homes. In a 2007 study it was recorded that there were 5,480 single parent households in our community. Of these 4,453 are fatherless homes and the rest are motherless or children living with guardians or grandparents. This reveals that there are easily 11,000 at-risk children in Daviess Co. Will you volunteer to be a mentor to one of these children?

. . . To
Serve Others?
When we think of being hospitable, we often think of serving those we know through our church or perhaps those we work with, but is this an accurate picture of hospitality? What does it mean to serve an at-risk child or a single mother, either by mentoring or by supporting the ministry? It means to be hospitable in the truest sense of the word.
The word hospitality is actually a compound word in its original language; it could look something like Phileoxenos. It comes from two words phileo and xenos. Phileo means love, like Philadelphia, the city of brotherly love. Xenos means stranger or foreigner. If you’ve seen “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” you might remember that xenos is a word used to say that someone is not like us or is not of our kind in Greek. So the word hospitality simply, yet profoundly, means to love strangers.
When is the last time you showed love to a stranger?
When is the last time you served someone you didn’t know because you saw that they had a need?
Hospitality has for its foundation the Gospel of Jesus Christ. When God displayed His love for us by sending His Son to be cursed in our place, by dying on the cross, He was in one sense showing hospitality to us. He loved us even as strangers and aliens of His promises. He showed grace, mercy and love to those who did not know Him and did not deserve to. Hospitality has a “Good Samaritan” feel to it, rather than a “love yourself” kind of love, or a “love those who are like you” kind of love.
When we love an at-risk child, we bring someone into our lives that would otherwise be a stranger. When we reach out to thousands of children from over 5000 single parent households in Daviess Co, we are coming along side those who have need of the next person to cross their path. We love in the same way that our Lord loves us.
Is it hard? Is the job fi lled with many hurts, burdens, and hard places to see? Of course but that is the point, these are the ones
that are hurting. They are the ones in need. How long will we show love to ourselves instead of reaching out to those in need?
The ministry of mentoring is one of great reward, but the greatest aspect of it is serving those without Christ and seeing His truth and grace set them free; sending them out into the world shining for Christ. Ps 146, James 1:27

Sarah Beth and Kelsi had been matched for 4 years and their match closed as Kelsi graduated high school. This is another testimony of the impact of longevity in matches.
Sarah Beth and Kelsi have enjoyed going to bookstores, eating out, talking, shopping, music, and MKK activities. Their fondest memory is dressing up as Wilma and Betty, from the Flintstones, for a MKK Costume party. They have also had a spiritual relationship where many opportunities of discipleship and growth have taken place. Now she is graduating from high school and pursuing a college degree in nursing.
