Volunteer Recognition Evening
This is our chance to say a big thanks to all our
mentors and other supporters. It’s an
opportunity to recognise the dedication of our
mentors and let the wider community know how
much effort they put into mentoring their young
people. We welcome all mentors and their
partners to come along and look forward to
seeing you there! We’ll send out an email soon to
get RSVPs.
When: Monday 2nd
December, 7pm
Where: The Boathouse, Wakefield Quay
What: Drinks and nibbles, followed by a short
ceremony acknowledging our mentors, then
dessert and coffee and another chance to mingle.
Take a kid fishing day
The free event is being held on December 7,
and fishing gear will be provided by the Sports
Fish for Youth Charitable Trust.
When: December 7, 8am to 12pm
Where: Access to the ponds is via River Rd,
which goes off State Highway 60 near the
Appleby Bridge. There are signs to the ponds

We'd appreciate your feedback
At our October mentor meeting we held a
brainstorming session seeking feedback on a
range of issues, such as mentor training
needs, the content and format of the monthly
mentor meetings, and how to encourage
more men to become mentors. Thanks to
those who took part – we’ve collated your
ideas and suggestions and they’ll be
considered as we plan activities and events
for next year.
We’ll also be seeking feedback from those
who couldn’t attend the meeting, by inviting
you to fill out an online survey soon. Your
feedback is much appreciated, so please take
a few minutes to do the survey. Of course we
welcome suggestions and ideas at any time,
so don’t hesitate to contact us.
Send us your pics!
We’re always keen to receive photos of
mentors and young people doing things
together, so next time you take some photos
please pass them on. We use the photos in
newsletters, on our website and in
promotional material and they provide a great
illustration of what mentoring is all about. We
do of course check first that we have
permission to use photos of our young people.
An ongoing challenge we have is finding
enough men to be mentors. We always have
more boys needing mentors than girls – at
the moment we have about 40 boys on our
waiting list – and for some reason it’s harder
to recruit men to mentor than it is to recruit
women. This is not just a challenge for our
region – it’s a challenge all over the country.
We’re putting some thought into ways to
attract more men and hope to launch a few
initiatives next year. In the meantime, if you
bump into a man who you think might enjoy
mentoring, tell him your story and encourage
him to look at our website or give us a call.
And if you have some ideas for attracting
more male mentors, share them with us in
the online survey we’ll send out soon, or drop
us an email.
The search is on
for more men
