• A Hybrid Drug and Mental Health Courts based on the successful Treatment Court Model

• Places Justice-Involved Veterans in appropriate treatment while under close judicial supervision Allows participants to go through the treatment court process with other Veterans

• Utilizes partnerships with the federal, state and local agencies, Veterans Service Organizations and mentor/peers

What is a Veterans Treatment Court?

1. Integrates alcohol, drug treatment, mental health treatment, medical services with justice system case processing

2. Using a non-adversarial approach, prosecution and defense promote public safety while protecting participants' due process rights

3. Eligible participants are identified early and promptly placed

4. Access to a continuum of alcohol, drug, mental health and rehabilitation services

5. Abstinence is monitored by frequent alcohol and drug testing

6. Coordinated strategy governs Court’s responses to participants' compliance

7. Ongoing judicial interaction with each Veteran is essential

10. Forging partnerships among the Veterans Administration, public agencies, and community-based organizations generates local support and enhances Court effectiveness

Welcome to the first addition of the Justice For Vets SITREP, a regular update on Veterans Treatment Courts. The military uses SITREPs, or Situation Reports, to keep personnel apprised of what is occurring in and around military units. Justice For Vets will use this same tool to keep you informed of important developments within the Veterans Treatment Court movement to include news, legislation, media coverage, resources, funding opportunities, special events and more. Please pass this along to anyone you feel would be interested in receiving information on Veterans Treatment Courts.
