Bud Walsh,of Walsh Jewelers in downtown
Menomonee Falls has found a creative way to
help families in need this Christmas. Beginning
in December, Walsh Jewelers is selling
Platinum colored cultured pearl earrings for
$5, and donating the entire amount, not just
the proceeds, to the Menomonee Falls Food
Pantry. My family and I are very grateful to
this community, which has allowed us to stay
in business for so long says Bud Walsh.
This is just a small way for us to be able to
help local families during this holiday season.
Every $100 donated to the pantry buys about
$1000 in food. It feels good to be able to help
make a difference. his wife Mary Pat adds.
Our supply of earrings is limited and I want
as many customers as possible to be able to
participate, so we have a limit of one pair of
earrings per person.

Signs of the pending reconstruction of Pilgrim Roadfrom near Park Boulevard to Megal Drive which willoccur from spring into fall next year are already presentin the village.
Tom Hoffman, village director of engineering services, summarized the work that will be done as part of the proj-ect during a Dec. 1 presentation to the Village Board.Hoffman noted that barrels have already started appear-ing along the road as utilities are relocating facilities priorto construction. The project is scheduled to begin on April21 and is slated to be completed by Nov. 25.
According to Hoffman, the project began initially as apavement replacement. However, as tax incrementalfinance districts (TIFs) were approved nearby, new devel-opment generated by the TIFs will create additional traffic. As a result, the focus changed to include capacityupgrades, including added turn lanes and wider intersec-tions.
Under the plans, a change will be made to the accessto Pilgrim Road for Wacker Neuson Corp. and Harley-Davidson. While Harley-Davidson currently has directaccess to Pilgrim Road, the plans call for having the Harley-Davidson and Wacker Neuson access be combined onto aroad called Megal Court, which will have access to PilgrimRoad, with traffic on Megal Court being navigated throughthe use of a roundabout. Hoffman noted that the round-about was suggested by the companies.
With the change in the Harley-Davidson entrance, a
traffic signal on Megal Drive will be able to move more traf-fic.
In addition, a large detention basin will be added tohandle runoff from Pilgrim Road.
Further south, Falls Parkway will be improved so that itwill have two left turn lanes, one through lane and a rightlane. For southbound motorists seeking to turn onto south-bound 41/45, dual left turn lanes will be added to dualthrough lanes and a right turn lane.
Hoffman said that the grade of bridge will be raised3.5 feet as part of the conversion of Hwy. 41/45 to aninterstate. In addition, Hoffman said the bridges will be alittle more decorative than they are now.
Concrete will be used for the road surface due to truck

BYNIKKI ACKERMANSTAFF WRITER
In the three and a half years sinceHartford residents Brian and NancyGehrung brought their daughter, Ava, intotheir home from China, their lives havebeen filled with lots of laughter and love.
She is sweet, happy, loving, funny, described Nancy in an interview with theExpress News. She is a great kid who lovesto make people laugh.
The effervescent nature of the nine-and-a-half-year-olda little person with thesame form of dwarfism as her adoptiveparentsmakes it especially hard for thosearound her to watch her experience somuch pain from the near-constant seizuresthat plague the girl.
She has experienced a lot of trauma inher short life, said Nancy.
It was clear early on that Ava had neu-rological issues so soon after he adoption,Nancy took her daughter for a CAT scanthat delivered devastating results.
Before we even got home from theappointment, the doctors office had called
us, she said. Tests had revealed that Avahad suffered a massive stroke at birth andthat had affected 75 percent of the left sideof her brain, and the Gehrungs were toldseizures would be a side effect.
A month later we saw her first seizure, said Nancy. It was even worse than theythought, she said, as a MEG scan that cap-tured pictures of Avas seizures revealedthat the affected part of her braintheoccipital lobewas continuously seizing. In two and a half hours she had at least200 seizures.
The Gehrungs decided surgery was thebest option and a year ago they attempteda two-part process; however, Ava was onlyable to make it through the first half of thesurgery due to an undiagnosed blood clot-
ting disorder.A second attempt at the surgery duringwhich doctors severed the part of her brain
that is seizing from the healthy areas wasmade at Childrens Hospital Nov. 3.
The surgery itself went smoothly withno complications, but the recovery hasbeen slow and painful, Nancy said. Imguessing it will be about four to six monthsbefore she is really back in action, andhopefully there wont be any more surgeriesafter this.
It has been a long journey for the fami-ly.
Married for six years, the Gehrungsdecided to adopt Ava after seeing her onthe Little People of America adoption web-site. Nancy already had two grown chil-drenCollin and Shannon OConnell, 21and 19, respectivelybut wanted to start afamily with Brian.
They adopted Ava and we neverlooked back, said Nancy.
Despite her strugglesemotionally andpsychologically Ava is about four yearsoldthe girl brings much joy to the familyand has many gifts, her mother said.
Because the right side of Avas brain isstrong, she is extremely creative. She lovesto pick up odd things and make beautiful
art out of them, Nancy described. She isa huge fan of Disney princesses and sheloves everyone in her family so much.
The surgery appears to have been asuccess, which is exactly what theGehrungs wanted, but the medical billsremain. Also, with Brian undergoing backsurgery and possibly missing up to sixmonths of work at the Menomonee FallsPost Office, the familys finances will likelybe a struggle for the near future.
The community has been incredibly sup-portive through everything, Nancy said.
Family friends Bob Howe and Gloria-Jean Siegel-Howe held a fund raiser forAvaat which more than $5,000 wasraisedat Trysting Place Pub inMenomonee Falls in September.
It was so humbling for us, said Nancy.
Local girl continues fight againstseizures, family in need of donations
traffic on the route, Hoffman said. He saida decorative element of poured concretewill be used for the crosswalks.
Also as part of the project, access forCleveland Avenue will be limited to a rightturn in, right turn out, eliminating left turnaccess from the road.
Hoffman said there are four fundingsources for the project. Hoffman said thestate Department of Transportation will payfor all costs from Cleveland Avenue to theHarley-Davidson driveway. The agency willalso pay for improvements to Main Street. From south of Park Boulevard to ClevelandAvenue and from the Harley-Davidson
driveway to Megal Drive, that willthrough the surface transportation (STP) in which the DOT will pay 80and the village will pay 20 percen
The village will pay all the coMegal Court construction. Hoffmthat for that portion of the projeclage received a $205,000 transenhancement assistance grant fstate as part of the addition of through the expansion of the Neuson facility. If the jobs are mafor seven years, the grant will notbe repaid.
Hoffman added the village coproject will be paid through the edistrict.
The following report was takenfrom records at the MenomoneeFalls Police Department.

The Menomonee Falls Plan Commissionsupported a change last week in the condi-tional use permit for Froedtert HealthCommunity Memorial Hospital for twoadditions.
According to a staff report prepared forthe Dec. 2 commission meeting, CommunityMemorial is proposing an addition on the
northeast side of its facility at W180N8085 Town Hall Road that will serve as asmall clinic and will provide patient admis-sion testing, waiting rooms and education. The second addition will involve the expan-sion of the existing emergency room on thesoutheast side of the building, which wouldinclude a covered patient drop off and pickup area and a small parking lot with hand-icap parking.
No one spoke at a public hearing onthe request and the request was supportedby the commission, with Village PresidentRandy Newman abstaining from voting.
The commission also supported a
request from Wacker Neuson ProductionAmericas LLC to amend the conditional usepermit to allow outdoor storage and testingof machinery and equipment at N92W15000 Anthony Ave. The companyrequested the change to allow for testinginside a company building and storingbetween 100 and 150 skid steers outside.
The fully built skid steers would be on theeast side of a building, 450 feet from thenearest residence and not visible from resi-dences or from Pilgrim Road.
While village staff recommended thatoutdoor activities at the site not exceeds 75decibels at the property line (the sound of atoilet flushing, according to the staff report),the commission recommended the noise belimited to 65 decibels at the property line.
Both items will go to the Village Boardfor final consideration

A new one stop shop for furniture, appliances, cabi-netry and construction and building supplies just openedin Germantown.
The Habitat for Humanity ReStore, the ReStore affiliateof Habitat for Humanity of Washington and DodgeCounties, opened last September at W188N10707Maple Rd., Germantown, Wis to much excitement.
"Its the only store in the world that helps build homes,"
ReStore Manager Bernie Hletko said.Indeed the ReStore is the only retail store that actuallyhelps people get brand new, affordable housing as allthe profits go straight into Habitats home constructionand home repair programs.
But thats not all. The ReStore takes donations from thepublic and nationwide businesses and offers them to cus-tomers at half off of retail. Imagine finding a brand newAnderson window at half cost. They even offer free pickup for donations.
"Its amazing what youll find at the ReStore," Hletkosaid. "It has everything and the kitchen sink."
With the profits from their three ReStores as well asgrants from various organizations such as ThriventFinancial, Habitat for Humanity of Washington andDodge Counties is currently building their 31st home. Incollaboration with that the affiliate has helped to repairnumerous homes through their "A Brush With Kindness"program.
"The way the ReStore works with the affiliate is notsomething you see everyday," Hletko said. "To see suchcollaboration and such a willingness to help other peopleis amazing. Ill be hard pressed to find another nonprofitthat is set up like Habitat. We are one of a kind because
at the end of the daywe will do anything tohelp these people."
So what is a Habitathouse? How do peo-ple qualify for one?
Executive DirectorRussell Wanta said that
a Habitat home is anaffordable house builtcompletely by volun-teers that through thepower of partnershipand a zero interestloan is made availableto people that demon-strate a strong need.
"We like to partnerwith people in the community that need a hand up in life,"Wanta said. "Through 250 hours of partnership andfinancial commitment to us we are empowering thesedeserving people to own their homes and be an activepart of the neighborhood and the community."
Wanta said the ReStore is one of the most crucial waysthey make these affordable homes possible. He addedthat the secret to all of Habitats success is "average peo-ple that are looking to make a difference in their commu-nities."
"We are 100% volunteer powered," Wanta said."Everyone you see out there with the exception of thebuild site supervisors is a volunteer. Without these won-derful volunteers, we would be left scratching our heads
wondering what to do."Volunteers are a necessary portion of the Ha
model."The volunteers are what make the store, they are
of our greatest assets and we are always lookinmore," Wanta said.
If you want to volunteer or would like more informabout Habitat for Humanity of Washington and DCounties, email [email protected] or call 338-0690.
If youd like more details on the Germantown ReSor would like to schedule a donation pick up coBernie Hletko at 262-255-7470.

It's been six years since Benedon's moved into the
Falls from the Colonial Plaza to the current loca-
tion at N85 W16158 Appleton Avenue, next to Bel-
Aire flowers and Chen's Chinese restaurant.
We're proud to part of this great community andhave made great friends and acquaintances, here,
and look forward to the next 6 years and more.
The staff now includes Chuck, Sam and Judy
Benedon and Brandon Dearth.
Chuck is a diamond dealer and jewelry manu-
facturer by trade for over 35 years. He's a skilled
guitarist, likes politics and law.
Sam is an outstanding musician, specializing in
guitar while also playing multiple instruments. He's
built numerous guitars and does set up and repair on
some instruments. He's a "gear-head" with extensive
knowledge in vintage gear.
Judy is a former grade school teacher whoseorganizational skills help Chuck keep the place
together. She's the real boss and office manager.
B randon, a "picker" since childhood, specializes
in coins and currency and other specialty items.
Last year, we got our Federal Firearms License
and currently provide loans on guns, along with the
other things we've been doing, here.
We are the only licensed pawnbroker in
Menomonee Falls and there are very few in the
entire metropolitan area, and the ONLY Firearms
pawnbroker in southeast Wisconsin. We know thatthere are many businesses that advertise online and
in the yellow pages under the pawnbroker head-
ings, but are not pawnbrokers, at all. They simply use
the term in a way that is wrong and misleading, to
bait you in to sell your valuables. Pawn is a collat-
eral based loan, plain and simple. If it's not a loan,
it's not a pawn. Selling your things is simply "selling."
In some circles, it might be called "hocking."
We hold four federal, state and local licenses,
three bonds and are insured. This is not something to
take lightly when selling your valuables. As an exam-
ple, a retail jeweler is only required to have a sec-
ond hand dealer's license to buy your products nobonds or further licensing required. Pawnbrokers
with licensing like ours, at Benedon's, withstand fed-
eral and state background criminal checks and the
state bank license requires yearly reporting to the
Department of Financial Institutions banking division
and a clean financial history.
