School District of Menomonee Falls resi-dents indicated support for a referendum toincrease the annual operating expenses andimprove facilities while showing less sup-port for a field house addition, according toa survey conducted for the the district.

The survey was conducted by SchoolPerceptions in September and October.Residents were mailed a paper survey, which included information for those who

preferred to take the survey online. Therewas a total of 2,106 responses, with 581coming in paper format. The margin of error for the full sample was plus or minus2.2 percent. Bill Foster of SchoolPerceptions told the School Board Oct. 12that the return rate was approximately 18percent.

Foster said 90 percent of individualsresponding to the survey were district resi-dents, 83 percent were not district employ-ees, and 53 percent do not have childrenattending schools.

According to the survey, 76 percent of respondents indicated that the district hasa positive impact on their home value.

"I do a lot of surveys and this is proba-bly one of the best (responses) I've everseen," Foster told the board.

Respondents were then asked if theywould support specific referendum ques-tions.

According to the survey:• When asked if they would support a

$1.25 million annual operating referendumto maintain current programs and servicesfor the next five years, which would havean impact of $35 for each $100,000 of ahome's value for five years, 48 percent of all respondents said "definitely yes” while28 percent answered "probably yes."Among residents who don't have childrenin the district, the responses were 33 per-cent definitely yes and 80 percent proba-bly yes.

Foster said he was "pleasantly sur-prised" with the satisfaction people had forthe district and for the operating referen-dum.

"Those are hard things for communitymembers to wrap their minds around.People typically support what they canunderstand, nobody understands schoolSee ‘SURVEY’ PAGE 7

PET OF THE WEEK Hi, my name is Taco. I'm an incredibly sweetboy who was transferred from Vilas CountyHumane Society due to lack of space. Myfamily surrendered me to Vilas Countybecause I would wander off when the kidsforgot to close the gate to the yard. I never meant to run away, mynose just took me on great adventures! To keep me safe my newfamily should keep me on leash, a secure fenced in yard, or on aleash while I explore the outdoors. I love to be with my people andcrave a good snuggle on my owner's lap. I am very tolerant andgentle and would do well in a home with children of all ages, otherdogs and even cats. When you come to visit me at the shelter I willbe so excited to see you that I can barely contain myself and youmay hear we whining for you to pay attention to me. Once I'm outof my kennel, I will melt your heart with a hug and a kiss!

    Drs. Richard and Bruce Winter

Dear Dr. Winter, I have been told by mydentist to have laser surgery to fix my gumdisease. Can you comment on whether this is

safe and if it is better than the deep cleanings Ihave been getting for years?Dear Jan, we now have a CO2 Superpulsed

laser at Hampton Dental Associates. The CO2laser is the most widely studied laser on themarket today with the most Universitysupported articles outlining their safety andeffectiveness. I can tell you that lasers arewonderful tools in dentistry if they are usedcorrectly. The ADA Council on ScientificAffairs has recently published a position paperon lasers and how they are used in dentistry. Some of the salient points of their paper are asfollows:

“There are currently more than twentycleared indications for use for dental lasers inthe United States.

According to the ADA position paper: “Thedental literature indicates that when “lasers” areused as an adjunct to meticulous root planing, mechanical or chemical curettage (i.e., theintentional removal of the epithelial lining of the sulcus) (lasers) offer no consistent benefitbeyond scaling and root planing alone withrespect to gain of the periodontal attachment.

Additional clinical data from properlydesigned clinical trials with adequate samplesizes are still required before it can be known towhat extent LANAP (Laser assisted newattachment procedures) are safe and effectiveacross the spectrum of patients with chronicperiodontitis.”

So while lasers can be used for removinglesions, performing frenectemies (removingtissue that holds tongues or lips down) andmany other soft tissue applications it has notbeen found to definitively treat gum disease. If our readers wish to be seen for evaluation of

soft tissue problems, melanin pigremoval, frenectemies or evaluationtreatment of gum problems we invite thecall us for an examination at 414-464-90

(in the second half),” Lutz said. Gleissner helped Fallsturn the game around for a suspense thrilling home-coming game.

It was not until 17.6 second left in the third quar-ter that Falls was on the scoreboard with a 30-yardpass from Gleissner to wide receiver Mason Janson. This set up a 3-yard touchdown run by senior runningback Boyd Sanson. Gleissner threw an 11-yard touch-down pass to Janson with 8:15 in the final quarter tobring the score 21-14.

With a deficit in the first half, Gleissner showedaggressiveness and grit by almost dealing an upset inthe final seconds. Gleissner completed a 30-yard passto senior wide receiver Matt Emmer to keep the gamealive. Menomonee Falls drove down to Hale’s 26-yardline but Gleissner was sacked. Gleissner tried to for
