A few weeks after the final classes for the 2013-14 schoolyear were held at Menomonee Falls High School, the schoolsFuture Business Leaders of America (FBLA) program added afew more trophies to those previously won by the schools stu-dents during the year.

FBLA is a competition in which students are tested in vari-ous forms of business-related skills. The tests include multiple-choice exams along with verbal presentations. Each studentselects a specific area of competition for the entire year.

During the FBLA competition in Nashville in late June,

Menomonee Falls scored one first place and two third placefinishes in the competition.

The national title was won by J.C. Hulce in computer prob-lem solving. Hulces title completed a run with the FBLA pro-gram that also included two sixth place finishes at previousnational tournaments.

I was hoping to at least match my previous results.Knowing that most FBLA members don't get to attend thenational conference at all, I am grateful to have experiencedit three times. I did not believe that I would take first place,although my father did, Hulce said when contacted for com-ment last week.

In FBLA, each student is allowed to participate one specif-ic area one time. Hulces previous national tournament

Froedtert & the Medical College ofWisconsin Community Memorial Hospital cele-brated 50 years of service in the area with acommunity festival held July 13. The festivalincluded food and beverages; a performanceby Accompany of Kids, as well as demonstra-tions by hospital staff, activities for children, dis-plays by the village police and fire depart-ments; and a food drive.

The event was held to commemorate notonly a widely respected and ever-expandingmedical establishment, but also a vision thatbegan with a handful of everyday citizens andflourished into a crown jewel of WaukeshaCounty.

When, in 1957, community membersbegan going door to door to raise funds for aneed they saw a local hospital few couldhave predicted that the facility that opened July1, 1964 would grow from 61 beds, 16 physi-cans and a staff of 70 to 202 beds, a medicalstaff of nearly 600 and more than 1,300 totalstaff.

From humble beginnings, CMH has sinceaccumulated a long list of achievements in thepast five decades, including welcoming morethan 42,000 babies into the world. Accreditedby The Joint Commission, the full-service hospi-tal specializes in cancer care, heart and vascu-lar care, orthopaedics, womens health andadvanced surgical procedures.

"Community Memorial Hospital was builtbecause of a sincere and compassionate con-cern that local residents live healthy lives alongwith a commitment to provide excellent healthcare right here in their community," said CMHpresident Dennis Pollard in reflection of the

hospitals history.Some highlights include: 1958CMH is incorporated and the

Hospital Board of Trustees is formed. 1964Hospital opens. 1970First major building project results

in an increase to 133 beds. The second flooradded; new OB Department/PediatricUnit/Surgical Unit; ICU Unit established;expanded surgery.

197410th anniversary: The hospitalgrows to include 70 medical staff members and450 staff members.

1975Day surgery program implement-ed.

1983Cardiac rehab program starts. 1989LindenGrove opens on hospital

campus; Community Memorial Foundationlaunches; Mental Health Center opens.

Dear Ted, there are many options for fixingunderbites that are non-surgical but I cannotcomment on your options until I havecompleted an examination and x-ray visit.Sometimes orthodontics can correct yourproblem other times crowns can be used tochange your bite. So surgery is always the lastoption considered. It is important toremember that once significant wear andchipping has occurred, the teeth that causedthis chipping also need to be corrected torecover the space that was lost from these teetherupting in to the chipped areas.

Dear Dr. Winter, I had a tooth break at thegumline. I really dont want a bridge as I haveheard they have to shave down the other teethand those teeth will be weakened. I am alsoconcerned that I might need bone grafting tohave an implant. What is your opinion aboutplacing implants the same day the tooth comesout? Can this help me avoid a bone graft?

Dear John, the ability to place an implant theday the tooth is removed is dependent onseveral factors. First the remaining boneshould be intact and thicker than 1.5 mm sothat there is good blood supply to fill in the

gap between the implant and the remainingtooth socket. Next there should be goodstabilization of the implant and if it can not beplaced with good insertion torque, it may bebetter to graft the socket and come back in 3months to place the implant after bone fill hasoccurred. The literature supports both means

of placing implants but it is still dependentupon clinician skill, bone quality and quantityand cosmetic expectations of the patient.

The following report was taken from recordsat the Menomonee Falls Police Department.

Absolute sobriety violation An 18-year-old woman was taken into

custody for violation of absolute sobriety at12:46 a.m. July 5 after she was stopped for atraffic violation at Silver Spring Drive andLannon Road. A second 18-year-old female inthe vehicle was cited for underage alcohol con-sumption.

Domestic violence A 25-year-old Menomonee Falls man

was arrested for disorderly conduct-domesticviolence at 6:14 p.m. June 28 following analtercation with the mother of his child in the19000 block of Silver Spring Drive.

Retail theft A female shopper at Piggly Wiggly, N81

W15182 Appleton Avenue, was taken into cus-tody on a state charge of retail theft at 5:14

p.m. June 30 after stealing five items from thestore. An investigation revealed she had priorconvictions for the same offense.

A female shopper at Woodmans FoodMarket, W124 N8145 Highway 145, wasarrested for retail theft at 4:18 p.m. June 28after stealing steak and other food items fromthe store.

An unknown actor fled Kohls DepartmentStore, N95 W18000 Appleton Avenue, with-out paying for two Dyson vacuum cleaners July1.

Cash was stolen from two vehicles in theN7000 block of Circle Court sometimebetween June 26 and 29. A total of $295 wastaken from one vehicle and $15 from the othervehicle.

he focused on networking concepts his fresh-man year and cyber security last year. As aresult of his previous trips to the national event,Hulce adjusted the way he planned for the

competition.I did make some changes to the way Istudied this year. Previously, I had discoveredthat many of the computer-related FBLA eventscorresponded quite well with real-world IT cer-tifications, he said.

Hulce explained that he relied on booksabout the IT certification as part of his prepa-ration process.

New this year, I placed more emphasison studying consistently using a flashcard appon my phone, and on experience by actuallyfixing real computers, he said.

The preparation paid off, as he answereda 100-question test in which an hour is given

for responses in 15 minutes.As you can imagine, test-taking skills are

just as important here as competency in thesubject material. While there are always afew questions that catch me unprepared, Iwould say that out of every test I have taken inFBLA, I felt the most confident after finishingthis one, Hulce said.

Hulce also noted there is an incentive forfinishing early, as the faster time to completethe test is the tie-breaker. Falls FBLA Co-CoachSara Burling cited Hulces motivation andpreparation as keys to his title.

His natural talent, hard work, and motiva-

tion earned him the title of national champion.I am extremely proud of JC, she said. Inaddition to competing, he always takes advan-tage of the other opportunities offered at thecompetitions such as meeting with officer can-didates, attending workshops, learning aboutother divisions of t he organization, and takingopen event tests.

Co-coach Michelle Oliver added thatHulce was involved with the whole teamthrough the support he offered to teammates.

At nationals, he kept everyone apprisedof who made finals. And he paid everyonecompliments who made it to nationals regard-less of if they made it to the stage, saying thatthey did a fantastic job. He is a true team play-er, even though he was in an individual event,Oliver said.

In addition to Hulces national title, the sen-ior team of Adam Vechart, Zack Marohl andWill VanderHorst placed third in sports andentertainment market. Burling noted she hadVechart and VanderHorst in the FBLA class forthree years and Marohl for two years.

It has been amazing watching them growand mature both in class and in FBLA. Theyare well-rounded individuals as they arebright, outgoing, personable, and motivated toachieve success, Burling said.

In this event, there was a 100-question test,with the top 15 teams advancing to a final

round in which they were given a scenario andhad 20 minutes to prepare a response whichwas then presented to a panel of judges.

Also placing third at the national competi-tion were Jayce Kolinski, Joe OClaire andAndres Ortiz in digital video production.Burling noted the three students didnt knoweach other prior to this year. Their competitioninvolved submitting a video and then explain-ing to a panel of judges how it was created.

We worked with the students on develop-ing their presentation skills in order to create asolid performance. It was neat watching themgrow from regionals to nationals, Burling said.

The national trip ends a year in whichMenomonee Falls hosted a regional competi-tion, won the state competition and had 33 stu-dents qualify for the national competition.

We are extremely proud of all of the stu-dents that competed at the NationalCompetition in Nashville. They were greatrepresentatives of our school. FBLA has adiverse population of students and it is alwaysawesome to watch them come together as ateam, she said.
