TTORECORD BREAKERS

The start of the 2009 indoor track and field season has been a very successful one for the entire Men’s and Women’s program at St. Norbert College. However two individuals have been on top of their game and stand out not only among St. Norbert’s best but also among the Nations elite. Meet Ashley Graybill (pictured to the left) and Jenny Scherer (pictured to the right).

It only takes a quick look at the St. Norbert record board to see where these two ladies rank among the best ever at St. Norbert. Out of 23 events that are currently contested at the NCAA level Graybill and Scherer own 13 of those records. That accounts for 56% of the indoor records at St. Norbert. After this coming weekend there is a good chance that a 14th record will be re-written with both of their names stamped clearly on

it. The Distance Medley relay, which eluded the pair last year by .03 seconds, is in serious jeopardy. Not only do they intend to break the school record in the event- but to also hit a National qualifying time as well.

When you expand from the St. Norbert record book and onto the National rankings you will also see The names Graybill and Scherer pop up more than once. As of Feb. 18th, Jenny Scherer currently has the second fastest 5K time among Division III competitors. Scherer posted a time of 17:05.92 this past weekend at the Iowa State Classic. In a race against predominantly Division I athletes, Scherer cruised to a 9th place overall finish beating athletes from schools such as Kansas, Michigan State, Wisconsin and Minnesota. Her time was almost 30 seconds faster than her previous best and rebroke her own school record set back in January. Scherer will attempt to complete the trifecta with All-American awards in a few short weeks. After placing 6th last year in the Outdoor Track & Field championships and 7th at the Cross Country nationals this fall- only an Indoor All-American award is missing from her resume.

Ashley Graybill currently has qualified for the NCAA indoor track & field championships in 3 different events. Graybill is currently ranked 3rd nationally in the 800m run, 7th in the 400m dash, and 3rd in the 4x400m relay. This past weekend she also competed at Iowa State and had a very impressive performance. Running in the fast heat of the 800m run Graybill out kicked athletes from Wisconsin, Nebraska and Oklahoma State to earn 1st place in her section. Her time of 2:11.37 is an NCAA Division III Automatic qualifying time. Graybill who was an All-American in the 400m dash during the 2008 indoor season will look to add to her collection March 13-14 in Terre Haute, Indiana. The question is, what event will she choose to run at Nationals (the 400m dash and the 800m run are contested within 15 minutes of each other so there is not an opportunity to run both). However, if Graybill continues to compete as well as she has all season it really won’t matter what event she chooses- the outcome will be the same!
