MIAC SHOWCASE WRAP-UP... The 2011 MIAC Men’s Hockey Showcase wrapped up Saturday and Sunday with six more games, and the theme of the weekend certainly was parity. Each of the nine games either ended in an overtime tie, or the margin of victory was a lone goal. The close games highlighted a great weekend of action at Fogerty Areana in Blaine, Minn.

MEET THE GUSTAVUS COACHING STAFF... Head Coach Brett Petersen is entering his 12th season as the head coach of the Gustavus men’s hockey team. Petersen has compiled a 148-126-20 record in his 11 seasons at Gustavus. His 148 wins at Gustavus ranks second behind legendary coach Don Rob-erts. He has been named MIAC Coach of the Year twice in his tenure, once in 2001-02 after helping the Gusties make the jump from ninth place the year before to a second place finish in the conference, and again in 2009-10 after leading the Gusties to their first MIAC Title since 1993. Petersen, a Roseville, Minn. native, received his Bachelor of Science degree in business administration from the University of Denver in 1992 and his Master of Science degree in athletic administration in 2000 from St. Cloud State.

Petersen is assisted by Jared Phillips and Aaron Hoiland. Jared Phillips, a 2003 graduate of Gustavus, is in his third season as the full-time assistant coach with the men’s hockey program. Phillips, a Bemidji, Minnesota native was a two-year letterwinner for the Gustie hockey team as a goaltender from 2001 to 2003. He completed his master’s degree in applied kinesiology with an emphasis in sports management at the University of Minnesota in the summer of 2009. Jared also serves as the Athletic Department’s Compliance Coordinator.

Aaron Hoiland joins the Gustavus men’s hockey program for his sixth season as a volunteer assistant coach. Originally from Anoka, Hoiland is a 1992 graduate of Forest Lake High School. After graduating from St. Thomas, Hoiland earned his Master of Arts degree in English from Stephen F. Austin State University in 2003.

ABOUT THE GREEN KNIGHTS...The St. Norbert College men’s hockey team opened the 2011-12 season with three games last week, going 2-0-1. The Green Knights defeated Concordia University 8-0 on Oct. 25 before splitting with UW-Stevens Point over the weekend. SNC fell 5-1 to UW-Stevens Point on Friday on the road before turning around to beat the Pointers 4-1 on its home rink on Saturday night.

Jordan Ryd is currently the team’s leading scorer with six points on two goals and four assists. Cullen Bradshaw (2G, 2A) and Alain Joanette (4A) each have four points.

Travis Bosch has logged the majority of the minutes in nets so far with 160:00. He enters the weekend with a goals against average of 2.25 and a save percentage of .878.

St. Norbert is scoring an average of 4.33 goals andallowing 2.00 goals per game. The Green Knights are hitting at 11.1-percent on the power play, yet are killing penalties at a 92.3-percent rate.

ABOUT THE POINTERS...UW-Stevens Point enters the weekend at 1-2-0 after falling 5-4 to Marian in its season opener on Oct. 21, and splitting with St. Norbert last weekend.

Kyle heck is the leading scorer for the Pointers through three games, notching four points on four goals. Harrison Niemann, Sean McNeely, and Luke Nesper all follow Heck with three points.

Nick Graves has done all of the goaltending for the purple thus far, logging a total of 179:33 minutes. He enters the weekend with a .865 save percentage and a 3.34 goals against average.

The Pointers are both scoring 3.33 goals and letting in 3.33 goals per game this season. They are 21.1-percent on the power play and 85.7-percent on the penalty kill. UW-Stevens point is also the most penalized team in the NCHA, averaging 27:00 penalty minutes per game.

TOP RETURNERS... Inexperience will be no excuse for the Gustavus men’s hockey team this year, as the Gusties return 18 letterwinners from last season’s squad to the ice.Returning letterwinners include senior Ross Ring-Jarvi, juniors Henrik Reisvang, Dan Erickson, Alec Ackmann, Andrew Peterson, Sam Blaisdell, Tim LaBombard, Brian White, Ryan Johnson, Jason Aguiar, and Tyler Venne, and sophomores Ilya Kravtchouk, Joey Olson, Zach May, Adam Smyth, Gustav Bengtson, Mark Jackson, and Patrick Hurley.

SUIT UP FROSH... Gustavus enters the season with nine fresh faces wearing black and gold. This year’s incoming class is the oldest class Coach Petersen has brought to campus in his tenure behind the Gustie bench. All frosh on the roster have a minimum of a year of junior hockey experience under their belts. This season’s newcomers include forwards Jack Walsh, Schyler Adams, Nate Weingarden, Andy Pearson, Cory Ellis, and Blake Schammel, defensemen Sam Smith, Nate Paulsen, and goaltender John McLean.

AROUND THE GLOBE... The 2011-12 Gustavus Adolphus men’s hockey team features 21 players who previously played junior hockey on 14 different teams. Coach Brett Petersen’s squad features players from six states; Minnesota (18), California (2), Texas (1), New Hampshire (1), Nevada (1), Oklahoma (1), and three countries outside the U.S. in Canada, Norway, and Sweden.

RINGO ONE AWAY.. Gustavus senior forward Ross Ring-Jarvi is all that remains from the 2008-09 Gustavus team that made a run to the NCAA Championship game. The last member of the old guard earned All-Conference honors for the third-straight time at the conclusion of last season, finishing 11th in the MIAC in scoring with 26 points (9G, 17A). Ringo, who wears the “C” on his chest for the second straight season, has played in 88 straight games in his three years at Gustavus. With a point last weekend at the MIAC Showcase, Ring-Jarvi came one point closer to earning the 100th of his career. 32 players in the history of

GUSTAVUS VS. ST. NORBERT... Gustavus matches up with the Green Knights for the 23rd time on Friday night in De Pere, Wis. St. Norbert holds the advantage in the all-time series with a mark of 13-9. Gustavus looks to get redemption for its last trip De Pere. The Gusties fell in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Playoffs by the score of 3-1 to SNC. With the score tied 1-1 in the first period, the Green Knights added two unanswered goals on their way to the win.

GUSTAVUS VS. UW-STEVENS POINT...Saturday’s contest between Gustavus and UW-Stevens Point is the ninth of the all-time series between the two schools. Gustavus holds the edge in the all-time series with a mark of 4-3-1. The Gusties came out victorious in the last meeting 6-3 in Stevens Point, Wis. Gustavus picked up six goals from six different players in the victory, scoring three unanswered in the third to win the game.

MAY ON HIS WAY...Gustavus Adolphus sophomore forward Zach May picked up right where he left off last season with two goals in the season-opener against Saint John’s on Friday night. May scored Gustavus’ opening goal of the season at the 3:30 mark of the first period then added another a the 13:52 mark of the second. He is the first Gustavus player since David Martinson in 2008 to score two goals in the opening game of the season. Martinson scored twice against St. Norbert on Oct. 31 in the 2008-09 opener.

POLL POSITION... St. Norbert enters the weekend as the top-ranked team in NCAA Division III hockey. The Green Knights have locked down the No. 1 spot since Feb. 28, 2011.

ON THE DOTS...After splitting the faceoff contests 37-37 in the opener against Saint John’s, the Gusties controlled the dots in their second contest against Concordia. Gustavus went 49-27 in faceoffs in the game. Brian White and Ryan Johnson led the team on the draw. White was 15-2, while Johnson was 14-5.
