The ProPosal: My Aunt Teresa stopped by to chat, and mentioned that she and her husband would love go out on a “triple date” on Saturday night with my parents and my fiance to the Memphis Country Club. Not having plans, I didn’t think anything of it, marked my calendar, and confirmed with Brenton. Brenton picked me up that night and we headed to the MCC and he asked me for directions and acted confused, trying to throw me off! We headed to where I was told we were eating, the Red Room. Before I could get all the way down the hall, I glanced to my left and saw two of my favorite sorority sisters and now bridesmaids, look up through a cracked door like deer in headlights. I FROZE! What were my friends from Fayetteville, Arkansas doing in Memphis, Tennessee? There were so many thoughts running through my head! Before I could turn to Brenton and ask what was happening, the sliding doors opened to the fabulous Breakfast Room and Lounge and I saw all of my closest loved ones! Brenton’s family from Clarksville, my family, and all of my very best friends from all over were there with champagne, cameras, and video recorders! Brenton held my hand and told me how much he loved me and then got down on one knee! I cried with joy and kept saying, “YES!” before he even popped the question!

The Big Day: Since we had a very traditional wedding and did not see or talk to each other before the ceremony, we passed notes hours before the ceremony. It was really emotional to feel his hands and voice without seeing him. I teared up as I read his beautiful note, and it is one of the many memorable things that I will remember from our special day.

Our photographer also surprised us with a photo booth that all of our guests really enjoyed.

One of the most memorable moments during the reception was when the lead singer and my groom serenaded me on the dance floor with the song “You are so beautiful”. I didn’t realize my husband had such a good voice!

WeDDing DeTails: Our colors for the ceremony were new shell pink, platinum, and white which were very soft and romantic with lots of candlelight. Lots of rose petals, wreaths, baby’s breath, and hydrangeas.

The reception colors were pumped up with hot pink and purple lighting, monogram gobo, crystal chandeliers, and fabric swaged across ceiling. ‘Bling’ was the theme

to Make the Most of Bridal ShowsTOP WAYS7

Your engaged and now it is time to start planning… With so many things to see and vendors to talk to, wedding shows can be overwhelming and feel a bit like, well the floor of the New York Stock Exchange. Savvy brides see through the chaos and make the

most of what bridal shows have to offer by way of inspiration, advice and vendor giveaways. With these 7 tips, you can too!

• 1 •Come Prepared. The boy scouts were on to something here… Make sure you have the essentials. Have a pen to take notes and sign up for all the wedding day give-aways. Better yet, pre-print mailing labels with your name, phone number, email and wedding date to save a ton of time. Also, remember to bring your camera to capture all the wedding inspiration on display… vendors are putting their best decorating foot forward and you will want to remember everything you saw.

• 2 •Don’t eat (a lot!) before you come. Weddings have food and so do wedding shows. Caterers and bakers use this opportunity to showcase great samples of their food so hold off on lunch & come hungry!

• 3 •Leave the little ones at home. Children have small attention spans and even with all the cake samples, will quickly lose interest becoming dead weight. It is distracting to have fussy or bored children (or adults!) in your party while you are walking the show floor and trying to talk with vendors. Think carefully about who will join you on wedding show day.

• 4 •Do your homework. It’s worthwhile to familiarize yourself with the services you are still seeking, what questions to ask and who is exhibiting at the show. This helps to maximize the time you have at each booth which can sometimes be limited with busy shows and popular vendors. Having other details such as your wedding date or budget mapped out, are also helpful… you don’t want to fall in love with a vendor only to find out, that they are booked on your wedding date or out of your price range.

• 5 •Come ready to make a deal. Many of the vendors will offer show-only discounts and specials for brides ready to book.  If you have done your research and have your checkbook in hand, the savings will add up fast.  Keep in mind that vendors are not as busy during the fashion show so if you have your dress, use this time to talk one-on-one.

• 6 •These boots are made for comfort. Remember the show floor is big with lots of walking so leave the heels for later that night and wear comfy shoes!

• 7 •FREE tickets! Many local vendors are given free show tickets to hand out to perspective brides that they would like to personally invite to the show. If you plan to set up meetings with vendors before the show, make sure to ask if they will have a booth and you just may get free tickets.

Behind the Story

loVe sTory: We have a mutual friend, my college roommate, who oddly happens to be from the same very small town in South Carolina as Adam. One day she and I were on a run and she mentioned that I should meet her cute friend Adam, who was studying to be an architect...ironically two weeks later he had picked me out of the crowd and called her up knowing we were friends. He came and introduced himself to me in the computer lab at school – then we went out for pizza, fell in love, and the rest is history! It was definitely fate.

Fast forwarding to his proposal...I really wanted to go to New York for Spring Break to visit Adam. He had moved there for a job after graduating but my mom and her friends were coming to Savannah, GA to visit me for a girl’s trip. I was looking forward to spending time with them, but I was still pretty upset that I wasn’t going to see Adam during my time off from school. As it turned out, he had organized a gathering of our families to surprise me that weekend. They had planned for us to meet up on the beach at Tybee Island, where we had our first kiss. He ran up and surprised me on the beach, got down on one knee, and popped the question! It felt like we were the only two people on the beach in that moment. That was also the first time our families ever met. It was an amazing weekend we will never forget!

The Big Day: We decided to get married in my hometown. I will never forget how special our ceremony was....to be together in that moment surrounded by everyone we love. We had a great time celebrating with friends and family at the reception afterwards... for our first dance we used the acoustic version of “The Best Thing” By Relient K.

We chose not to have a groom’s cake but the wedding cake was vanilla with raspberry filling, Adam’s mom worked very hard and made the cake for us from scratch...it was delicious!

The WeDDing Planning ProCess: I think every girl dreams of having the perfect wedding. We made our own invitations and programs...which was A LOT of work but totally worth it. With us both having a strong design background, we wanted something that really identified who we are as a couple.

We chose to have our ceremony and reception at The Retreat at Spring Creek Ranch. With Adam an architect and me a designer, it was extremely important to us that our wedding reflected our own personal style. I searched all over the Memphis area and knew as soon as I visited Spring Creek that it was perfect for us. The staff is excellent, the location is beautiful, the golf house is cool, edgy, and modern. It was exactly what we were looking for and was the perfect location for us – no doubt about it.

Behind the Story

The ProPosal: We met at a mutual friend’s birthday dinner. As Steven tells it, it was love at first sight for him. He remembers thinking...”that will be the future Mrs. Maney.” I needed a little convincing :) After begging Deshawna for my number, Steven called and asked me out. Our first date was at the Melting Pot. I tell people that I knew I loved him within the first 10 minutes.

Steven and I have always said that we are best friends first. I think that’s what makes our relationship work. When things get rough, we can laugh it off. We both seem to roll with the punches in life. We strive to always go to bed with a joke or a funny story. I think laughter is the key to our relationship. My father passed away a few years ago and Steven never had the opportunity to meet him. Father’s Day was approaching and knowing how much my father meant to me, Steven decided to propose to me at his grave site. By propsing at that location, he felt he had my father’s “blessing.”

WeDDing DeTails: We went for more of a vintage/romantic feel. We chose the Peabody because of it’s architecture. I loved the details in the continential ballroom. I chose a lace dress because I felt like it went with the aesthetic of the Peabody.

My favorite DIY project from our wedding was a picture project. We asked our guests who were already married to send us a picture of themselves on their wedding day. With the help of my mother, sister, and grandmother, we framed about 50 pictures in different antique looking picture frames ranging in size from 4x6 to 8x10. We had Happi Names make name cards with the guests names on them (Mr. and Mrs. James Phillips or Mr. and Mrs. Vincent Maney) and we tied kelly green and lavander (our wedding colors) ribbon on each frame with there name tags. It was displayed on an 8 foot table at the cocktail hour and then moved to the reception area. I have sereval people tell me that it wa there favorite thing about the wedding. It certainly was mine. Our whole concept was to celebrate love, not just our love, but the love our guests have for each other.

Another favorite thing about the wedding was that instead of doing your average party favors. We opted to make a donation to the American Cancer society in honor of my father, family friends, and other family members that have passed away due to cancer in the past few years. We typed up cards with a poem for our guests to take with them.

Behind the Story

The Big Day: I most anticipated Zach and I seeing each other for the first time. We decided to have a “first look” with just the two of us and the photographers before the ceremony. It was a really sweet moment. As I was walking down the aisle I kept thinking that I couldn’t believe it all came together. Everything was better than I even imagined and I was so happy it didn’t rain! My Dad and I stood at the end of the aisle for a while and I started tearing up. The emotions of actually marrying the love of my life... I was so happy. I was also really excited about our first dance which was “Just One Thing” by My Morning Jacket.

Our wedding cake was traditional white cake and buttercream icing, but between the layers we had lemon and raspberry filling. Instead of having a groom’s cake we opted for a dessert bar with assorted mini cupcakes, mini pecan pies (Zac’s favorite), mini blackberry cobblers (my favorite) and mini cinnamon sugar doughnuts. I also had antique candy jars filled with penny candies for guests to take home. I used to go to the Old Country Store at Casey Jones’ Village in Jackson, TN when I was younger and I loved the barrels filled with candy!

WeDDing Planning ProCess: I chose my wedding planner Amy Miller Weddings & Events because I thought we had similar personalities and that we would get along well. I knew I wanted someone calm, detail-oriented, and organized. Amy always seemed to be happy and was fun to work with. I also wanted to put my touch on almost everything. I made the save-the-dates, program fans, escort cards, place cards and did the calligraphy. I also made pinwheels with doilies and buttons, doily pennant banners, doily table runners and spray painted doilies onto the paper goodie bags. I collected vintage handkerchiefs to give guests at the ceremony and vintage vases for the flower arrangements. I painted the top of a small, vintage table with chalkboard paint and used it as the “menu”. I made signs for the desserts using vintage spools of thread, memo holders and chalkboard tags. I put different old fashioned candies in mason jars and created tags for each table name. I made vintage button earrings for each of my bridesmaids. Our guests signed quilt squares that I plan on making into a quilt. I loved looking at wedding blogs and magazines. I had a huge binder with all my ideas. I loved all the beautiful colors and design elements.

What most people do not realize is that the entertainment business is unregulated. That means that anyone can claim to be or do anything without actually having the knowledge, abilities or proper equipment to do so. The only real way to verify that you have hired a quality professional is to ask many questions. The answers that you get will help you determine if the person you are considering can truly provide the services that you need for your special day. Here is a list of the most important questions to ask before you hire an entertainer or band and an explanation of why they are important to ask.

1. Do they bring back up equipment? All equipment is subject to failure at any given time. You want to make sure that if there is an equipment failure that your entertainer does have a way to continue to run your event no matter the circumstances.

2. What happens if the entertainer becomes ill or is unable to perform for my event? Many entertainment companies are single, individual owners. That means that there is no one other than them that can handle your event. You should always verify whether or not they have an appropriate entertainer as a back up for your event.

3. Do they have references? Any professional will have references available for your review. You can also ask another vendor that you have already hired for their opinion. Remember, an industry vendor (photographer, caterer, facility coordinator, etc.) will only refer people that they trust. no one will refer a vendor and take a chance tarnishing their own name by taking a gamble with your event.

4. Do they have liability insurance? This is very important because if someone is injured due to the neglect of the entertainer then what will you do? Many entertainers will say that they are covered under the facility’s insurance and this is simply not true. Accidents can happen and you will want the peace of mind that your entertainer has liability insurance. if MeeMaw or Aunt Sally trips over a cable run by the entertainer and break a leg then you will want to be reassured that there is proper insurance to cover the injury. Also, if the entertainer damages something at the facility then you will not want to take the responsibility yourself, so verify that the entertainer does have insurance and can provide you with a copy of their coverage per your request.

5. Do they have experience with wedding receptions? There are many types of entertainers out there. Some are considered “specialists” in the field. Just because you saw someone at a club doing a great job that does not mean that they are familiar with the protocols to run a wedding reception effectively. Always ask if they have experience with wedding receptions and that they know and understand the general flow of a wedding reception.

6. Are they a “full time” entertainer or a “hobbyist”? Many entertainers have full time week day jobs and entertain only on the weekends and some entertain solely for a living. Just because someone only entertains part time does not mean that they are not perfectly capable of handling your event needs, but you may also want to take it into consideration as well. A “hobby” entertainer may see your event as an opportunity to party on your dime

also, so making sure to ask other questions is imperative to verify you have the type of personality running the event the way you prefer.

7. Are you a “low key” entertainer or an “in your face” entertainer? Some people have a very formal event and prefer an entertainer that will only do the minimal when it comes to making announcements and running their event and some people want a more personality driven entertainer that will get guests moving and having a good time by making multiple announcements, line dancing with the guests and so on. We have found that most people want a very formal event for the dinner hour and formalities (1st dance, father/daughter, mother/son dances) and want someone who will get somewhat active when it is time for the event to pick up without going too far or crossing any lines with the guests. First, you have to decide what you expect from the entertainer and then you will need to verify that the entertainer is comfortable running the event the way you are asking them to. if they are not completely comfortable running the event the way you are asking them to do then you may want to speak to someone else for your needs.

8. DOES THE ENTERTAINER DRINK ALCOHOL WHILE THEY WORK? This is, by far, the most important question to ask. Anyone that drinks alcohol while serving a client is a major liability. Very few people are allowed to drink alcohol while they work, so why should it be ok for your entertainer to drink during your event? Anyone that thinks it is ok to drink alcohol while they are being paid to do a job, especially as important as a wedding reception, should be someone that you question greatly. A drunken person with a microphone can be a very bad thing and could ruin your entire event. if the entertainer you choose is not willing to write on the contract that they will not consume alcohol during your event then you will only have yourself to blame if it goes horribly wrong. it is simply too important to take any chances, so don’t take the gamble. You may lose badly.

The entertainer you choose will have a lasting effect on you and your guests for years after the event itself. Some people do not realize how important the entertainment is for their event until it is too late and some are happy that they asked the right questions and picked a professional to make sure their event went as smoothly as possible. Only you know yourself and your guests well enough to know what you really want for your reception. Make sure to explain exactly what you want and don’t be afraid to ask for guidance when you feel it is necessary. A professional entertainer will be more than happy to help you plan and prepare for your event and will be willing to put the specifications you want on the written contract.. People generally want to have an event that their guests remember for years to come. You have to take careful consideration in what is remembered about your event. Most guests will not remember what they ate a year after the reception or what kind of flowers you had, but they will always remember whether or not they had an enjoyable time, so make sure to ask any questions that you feel are important to the success of one of the most important days of your lives.

Aska Pink Lady:

WEDDING VENDORS

I ‘m getting overwhelmed by all these wedding emails! What can I do?First things first... set up a separate email account for your wedding planning.  This will keep wedding emails separate from your personal account and once you’re married, you can simply stop checking it.  Check out MyBridemail.com for a wedding specific email service.  What not to do?  don’t report the email as spam unless you are sure that it is.  if you no longer wish to receive emails from a vendor, simply unsubscribe from the email (at the bottom of nearly all email newsletters) or contact the vendor directly asking to be removed from their list.  Reporting an email as spam can limit a vendor’s ability to email other brides and grooms that want the information.

Is it appropriate to let vendors know that you have booked someone else?Absolutely!  letting a vendor know that you have decided to go with another vendor is definitely a good idea.  not only will this stop email follow-up but vendors are able to release a date to other couples looking to book.  Sending a short email will generally do the trick.  if you feel so inclined, giving a reason on why they weren’t the right fit is normally appreciated as well.  Professional wedding vendors want to know how they can better serve future brides and grooms!

Is it true that vendors charge more when it’s a wedding? The answer is often yes... and it should be.  While this may not seem fair, the difference in the amount of work related to a wedding vs. other social functions or corporate events is fairly significant.  Often an event of similar size and budget for a retirement party or family reunion will require a third of the email and phone correspondence compared to a wedding.  Corporate clients are even less and rarely ask for tastings, multiple meetings outside business hours and numerous proposals adjustments.   All this increases the overall time a vendor spends when working with brides and grooms and since time is money, weddings cost more.  if this still doesn’t seem right, ask your vendors to explain why they charge more.  Confident and professional vendors are happy to explain pricing so it makes sense to their clients.  if not... go with a vendor that has fair pricing policies.

My wedding vendor is not returning my calls and I’m not happy with their services! Isn’t that a breach of contract? ideally, no bride or groom should ever have to deal with a poor performance by a wedding vendor, during or after the planning process.  While i am not a legal expert, i have been on the both sides of this fence.    Before you do anything, take a good look at the contract and cancellation fees.  While few contracts will address customer service, a client always reserves the right to cancel their agreement.  This will likely result in a loss of your initial deposit and could send you on a frantic last minute hunt for a vendor.  instead, i suggest sitting down with your vendor for a heart to heart on your concerns.  Stay calm and offer suggestions for how your problems can be addressed.  Avoid being overly dramatic and attacking a vendor as it will get you nowhere, fast.  if possible, ask to work with another employee that might better mesh with you personally or ask to speak with a general manager or owner.  if no solution is in sight, follow your gut and find a new vendor.  Better to lose a small deposit than have a wedding vendor disaster on your big day.  note:  The closest your wedding day is, the higher the cancellation fee will likely be.  Address your apprehensions when they occur, rather than wait until a budget crunch leaves you little option other than to hope things will work out.  Small Claims Court can be some help here but probably not in time for wedding day.

Behind the Story

loVe sTory: Brandon was friends with my cousin. When it came time for his high school Christmas dance he did not know whom to ask. My cousin introduced us, and we went together. Even though we would not date until many years later, it was the first date of what would eventually become a lifelong journey.

While scuba diving in the Bahamas, our dive boat captain told us about an old shipwreck, and how a storm had washed artifacts into the area we were in. While diving, I found an antique glass vase half buried in the sand. When I got back on the boat I rinsed it out and found a glass ring inside. When I turned around, Brandon held up a real ring, and asked me if I would like to trade. He had set up the whole thing, with the dive company and all.

The Big Day: The most anticipated part of my wedding day was “The First Look.” This was the first time he would see me in my dress on our wedding day. We could not wait to see each other. As I was walking down the aisle, I just kept thinking how perfect the moment was, and the look of Brandon holding back his happy tears.

My favorite part of the ceremony was when we thought the pastor was going to say “kiss the bride” so I went for it, but stopped short when I realized that was not what he was saying. He laughed and said, “never mind, kiss your bride!!” We then went on to the reception where we had our first married dance as a couple to Blue Heaven Rendezvous by Jimmy Buffett.

The WeDDing Planning ProCess: Getting started with wedding planning was the hardest part as I had not been planning since I was a little girl. I found inspiration in a photo I took of a winery while in Napa Valley and ran with it. I picked a rich purple and a vibrant green because it reminded me of the grapes and vines in Napa Valley. For my wedding we did tons of DIY projects! Everything from candy boxes to the groom’s homemade brownie bar, and even some potted plants. Don’t forget the 200 glow sticks we tied ribbon to for the farewell.

My wedding cake was chocolate and vanilla with butter crème in the center. My mother-in-law surprised me with my own “chocolate bar” that had cupcakes from Muddy’s, homemade brownies and other chocolaty delights.

Throughout the planning process and picking out all the details, I think the best was watching everything come together, and spending time with my mom.

We decided to take a delayed honeymoon to Europe in October. Two weeks touring the country! We did take a mini-moon trip to Hot Spring Arkansas for a get-a-way.

loVe sTory: Aaron and I are both cyclists (he races while I am a more casual rider). Three years ago I went to Kentucky to do a ride. While I was there I saw this black and hot pink bike that was pretty. The friends that I was with did some checking around and I found I could get that bike if I ordered it through Outdoors. At that time Aaron was a bike mechanic at Outdoors. One hot Tuesday night after a very hard ride, I yelled to Aaron “I need to talk to you about a bike” before he left. He thought that was my way of flirting with him (I wasn’t though). Needless to say, I ordered my pink and black bike from Aaron and he started calling and texting me daily. After about three months of hanging out we started dating.

Aaron set about making the proposal memorable by popping the question the Thursday before the Mississippi State vs. Georgia football game. Aaron came over to run with me, but I was talking to a friend that I would see that weekend at State. She happened to ask me when Aaron was sitting next to me, “Are ya’ll engaged yet?”. I said no, and once I got off the phone I went to put on my socks and shoes. Aaron followed me into my room and I told him I would just be a second so you can wait in the living room to which he replied – “I’m about to do it.” I knew what he meant but was kind of in shock. He got down on one knee asked me to marry him and then we went for a run.

The Big Day: The most memorable moments during our wedding were the actual ceremony. We had several meetings with Reverend Stephen Cook and I asked him not to tell me what he was going to say the day of our wedding. His whole message was a surprise and we thoroughly enjoyed it.

One thing I really enjoyed about our wedding weekend was the time I was able to spend with my good friends. Since I was getting married in a bed and breakfast, all my bridesmaids stayed with me the night before the wedding.

The DeTails: For our wedding, we planned for a small afternoon wedding. We invited family and close friends and had a more intimate setting. The ceremony was outside - the flowers and gazebo at The Cedars were beautiful. For entertainment we had live music. There was a candy bar in honor of my grandparents who were not able to attend the wedding. We also had a photo booth with chalk boards for all the guests to leave us messages.

The WeDDing Planning ProCess: We were engaged 8 months while I planned our wedding. I looked over some wedding magazines and then just figured out what I thought I would like and asked Aaron what he wanted. From that, we looked for vendors for the venue, flowers, food, cake, and music. Once those were settled, I made some simple decorations and it was all planned.

Behind the Story

WeDDing DeTails: We were engaged for a year and four months. We hired Kamesha Richard of Ava Loren Design Studio, and initially used the Pink Book at the start of our preparation and throughout for organization. One of the most important things of our wedding was to have a WOW factor aspect while keeping it classic, crisp and clean.

We chose Opera Memphis because A few years ago, we had the pleasure to attend an AIA Memphis Gala at Opera Memphis and we were immediately taken with the venue! The sleek, modern architecture and clean, crisp color palette of the space are an aesthetic delight. When it was time to plan our wedding, we KNEW that Opera Memphis would be the place for us, and the color palette of the space MATCHED OUR WEDDING PALETTE EXACTLY! :-) Opera Memphis was everything we wanted in a venue and so much more!

Planning our reception at Opera Memphis was amazing! Jonathan Ealy, OM’s Facility Director, is so incredibly accommodating and made us feel like we were the only clients he had from beginning to end. Being that he is an exceptionally busy man, we applaud him for this coveted ability. Our wedding designer was so glad that we chose Opera Memphis as our venue; she often said “This space just feels like the two of you! It’s so befitting!” We were so excited for arrival of our wedding day and especially our reception celebration at Opera Memphis with all of our friends, family and loved ones.

The Big Day: Our wedding day was simply amazing! Its been a few days since we were married and we are still getting complements on how lovely the wedding was, and how lovely everything and everyone looked, how marvelous the food was, and so forth. I think that one of the most unusual things about our wedding is the fact that we weren’t nervous at all and that neither of us cried. There were quite a few things that we found amusing. One was that Mario was sweating so profusely that I had to use his handkerchief to dab his face in the middle of the ceremony. The guests found it quite funny! Our ring bearer ran down the aisle to the alter, our flower girls did an impromptu dance at the reception, my brothers ‘high fived’ me when they gave her away, and shouted when Mario and I were pronounced man and wife. One of the more memorable moments at the ceremony was when Mario’s mom was singing a song that she co-wrote with him, she inserted my nickname, “Hope.E”, in place of one of the endearments. :-) It was hilarious and touching too.

your loVe sTory: Steffan and I met through some friends at a favorite restaurant in Columbia, South Carolina, where we were both working after college. He won me over with his sense of humor, strong character, and culinary skills! We were able to talk about anything, and he quickly became my closest friend. After dating for a little over a year, we took a trip to see his parents in New Hampshire in October. Steffan took me on a drive that ended at Rudyard Kipling’s house on a mountain in Vermont (most amazing view!) and proposed there. I’m a pharmacist, so he had placed my engagement ring in a prescription bottle labeled with my name. It was a perfectly planned proposal! I was totally shocked and thrilled. The ring was his grandmother’s, and it fit beautifully. We were able to celebrate with his family that night and spend the next few days relaxing away from home and work!

The Big Day: Our wedding day was perfect! The thunderstorms of the day before had stopped the morning of our wedding, and the weather was absolutely gorgeous, sunny and breezy, with temperatures in the seventies. We had a room upstairs at our church where I was able to get ready for the day with my mom and bridesmaids, so that was a special time with the girls. One of my favorite moments was seeing Steffan for the first time. We decided to see each other before the wedding and have photos taken then, and our photographer Brenda orchestrated an outdoor meeting for the two of us in a little garden. It was beautiful and so nice to have a few minutes alone with him before going back inside. I also loved arriving at our reception site and getting to see how amazing everything looked! It was beautiful, and so much fun to get to walk around and greet our guests as they arrived.

The DeTails: We had a traditional wedding ceremony at our church, followed by an outdoor reception with a Southern dinner, music and dancing. The groom’s cake was decorated with a palm tree to signify our love for South Carolina. The most important thing to us about our wedding was that we would be married afterwards! I was really excited about the ceremony and celebrating with all our friends and family, but mostly looked forward to being married to my best friend. Because of that we were able to keep the wedding details mostly simple and stress-free.

Marriage anD aDViCe: We would definitely recommend keeping the wedding as simple as possible, and investing in a great photographer! The day went by so fast that it has been so wonderful to have such beautiful visual documentation of our wedding day to look at later. We are having so much fun being married!

Behind the Story

loVe sTory: We met at friend’s engagement party. We both had plans to go to South America for missions and Richard was able to strike up a conversation with me using that. We talked until the party was over, and we had to run inside due to the yard sprinklers. He proposed to me at the Dixon Gardens on November 18th. The Dixon Gardens is our favorite date place.

The Big Day: My biggest memory was walking down the aisle. Richard and I didn’t see each other before the wedding so walking down the aisle was the first time we actually saw each other that day. All I kept thinking as I was walking down the aisle was “Is Richard crying... yep he is... awwww he loves me and thinks I’m pretty!”. When Richard and I joined hands at the beginning of the ceremony we both giggled and shrugged our shoulders at the same time. It was cute and totally typical of us.

The DeTails: Our wedding was very traditional... we utilized something borrowed, blue, old, and new. My something blue was the tie for my bustle. My favorite was my something old. My Aunt made my veil/hair piece completely out of my mother’s wedding dress. She did this while being treated for breast cancer so not only was it extremely sentimental, but also a labor of love.

When my mom, mother in law, maid of honor, and I walked into Low’s the dress was hanging directly in front of us. It was my size and in my price range. It was perfect!!

Together we made the RSVPs in the invitations and the programs. My very best friend and maid of honor did the centerpieces, such a good friend! Our centerpieces were mason jars with coffee beans and gerber daisies. The wedding cake was strawberry with cream cheese! YUM! Our groom’s cake was the state of Texas with the flag on the icing... you know those Texans... very proud of where they are from!

Christen Jones, our photographer, was recommended to us by a friend of mine, and after seeing her pictures on her website I was so excited that she was available on our date. Christen captured EVERYTHING! She caught every hug, smile, laugh, tear, and awkward dance move! She was amazing! Christen was so easy going. I never had to worry about anything. She made this insecure girl feel beautiful that day! She is truly talented!!! Such a blessing!

We chose Hillwood at Davies Plantation because it had a nice southern feel to it with the lights and the cedar walls. We fell in love with it as soon as we walked in! We decided to book this venue immediately.

loVe sTory: We met in 2008 where we both attended Samford University. We had been good friends but things changed after we trained for a half marathon together. I figured if Hunter could see me all sweaty and still like me, he was a keeper. They say opposites attract and its the truth. My weaknesses are his strengths and vice versa. We catch ourselves saying “we make a good team” often! Also, Hunter is eerily like my dad.

Hunter proposed to me on a random Wednesday afternoon where he decorated my whole apartment and completely caught me off guard!

The DeTails: When asked my wedding “vision”, I would tell people that I wanted it to look like Anthropologie meets Big Sky, Montana. Since our reception was at the Memphis Zoo’s Teton Trek, I really wanted to continue that rustic theme. So, we found ourselves bringing the outdoors in. We brought in trees to the alter which set up a beautiful backdrop for our ceremony. I also wanted the wedding to reflect our personalities which is fun and casual.

I did several DIY projects. In addition to adding ribbon and envelope liners to our Save-the-Dates and wedding invitations, I addressed the envelopes myself. To surprise Hunter, I made cupcake toppers that had fun facts about him for people to enjoy...these surrounded his groom’s cake. Also, we made the programs people received when they arrived at the reception in addition to the pictures of Hunter and I. Finally, the candy favor bag tags that said “How Sweet of you to Come” were a DIY project. There were actually quite a few DIY projects. I just really wanted the day to reflect us as a couple.

The WeDDing Planning ProCess: We were engaged for almost 8 months. We did not hire a wedding planner because we had FANTASTIC friends to help along the way. Since my Mom owns her own business, a garden shop called Millstone Market, she not only had access to flowers and containers but the PHENOMENAL ideas to go along with them. Tim Dalfiume, Director of Events at the Zoo and family friend, helped tremendously with all the details and logistics. Since I am a part of an amazing, creative family with great support and friends, we were our OWN planners.

The Big Day: My dad and I choreographed our father-daughter dance...and surprised EVERYONE! We started out dancing to What a Wonderful World then surprised all our guests...including the groom...by breaking out into Soulja Boy’s Crank That and Michael Jackson’s Thriller! It was so fun! We wanted our guests to have an amazing time at the reception and leave FULL. We probably “splurged” the most on our food and drink. And I know it was well worth it because we got so many compliments.

Behind the Story

loVe sTory: Within the first year of dating, Brandon finished up his program and became employed at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana. At the same time I was accepted into a psychology Ph.D. program in Greensboro, North Carolina. For two years we had a long-distance relationship, and Brandon and I would frequently make the 10-hour trek to each others’ places.

In April 2010 Brandon and I met up in Corbin, KY for a weekend together. That first evening Brandon proposed to me under the moonlight in view of Cumberland Falls! We spent the rest of the weekend giddy, sharing the news with friends and family (and hiking around the beautiful park!).

The Big Day: We got married at 7pm on a Friday evening, but started preparations for the ceremony early in the day. After an easy-going photo shoot with Sweet Water Images we all dressed back down and enjoyed a meal together. Starting early left us with plenty of time to relax before the nuptials and the pace of the day wasn’t too hectic!

The ceremony was beautiful, but the most memorable aspect of the wedding may have been the recessional! Eli announced us and we turned to walk out hand-in-hand. I made that first step, but managed to completely skip the second! Fortunately, I didn’t actually fall over, just stumbled awkwardly, but we all had a good laugh. I would advise future brides to practice in shoes similar to those they will wear on the big day!

Our reception was also held at the church, and we created a playlist of our favorite bluegrass songs to celebrate to. The menu consisted of hors d’oeuvres, and the mashed-potato bar and groom’s key lime pie (instead of a groom’s cake) were big hits! We knew the reception would go by fast, so we ensured we would be able to continue to celebrate with our wedding guests later in the evening. After a wardrobe change we enjoyed the company of our great friends and family at an “after party” at my brother’s home in Memphis. The next morning my parent’s hosted a breakfast for the wedding party and family. Brandon and I were both glad to have some time after the wedding to continue visiting with everyone. If we had returned to Muncie or taken a honeymoon directly after the nuptials we would have missed out on some great times.

The WeDDing Planning ProCess: Our engagement was relatively short, from April to November. After graduating with my Masters, I relocated to Muncie, and Brandon and I were able to plan the wedding together. We couldn’t have done it without help from our families though! My mother-in-law got me a great “Bride’s book”, and my mom lives in Collierville, so she was able to speak directly with any vendors if necessary.

loVe sTory: We met at a Marine Corps birthday party.. My neighbor is a marine and he asked me to come not everyone had dates. I met Michael and we instantly had a connection.

The day before his 21st birthday The day before his 21st birthday and his family decides to get everyone together for a birthday dinner. His family decided to get together and take him out for a birthday dinner. We all got dressed and were waiting downstairs in the kitchen. He came down and said that he had something to say. He talked about how important family was to him, and how much he loved his family. Then he got down on one knee and said he was ready to make me a part of his family and to start his own. The ring Michael got me had diamonds and an aquamarine stone, which is my birthstone.

The Big Day: I was so excited for my Daddy to give me away to Michael. I know that sounds cheesy but I was looking forward to being his wife. Michael and I could only think about how happy we were.

I think the funniest moment of our wedding started when we told my maid of honor and his best man that when we cut my cake they needed to say a little speech. They were so nervous and spent forever writing one. When we cut the cake instead of them giving a toast we smeared cake in their face. It was priceless.

It was very important for us to make the wedding fun for everyone that came. When the end of the night arrived, everyone was sweating from dancing so much and laughing. I wanted my friends to enjoy and remember how special of a moment this was for us, and everyone had a blast!!!

The WeDDing Planning ProCess: I alwasy thought I wanted a small wedding and had never put much thought into it. As soon as we got engaged, I wanted the fairy tale wedding. Angela at Southern Event Planners, is so amazing. It was a really big wedding and she made it so easy.

I did not do any personal DIY projects, but my mother-in-law did. I am a huge Mississippi State University fan, and she got miniature maroon cowbells and tied white ribbons on them. That is what we had instead of throwing rice, and everyone rang their cowbells!!!

I knew that I wanted black bridesmaid dresses and then I picked my two favorite colors that would go with black. I picked fuchsia and tiffany blue.

Then for my wedding cake, I wanted the cake layers to vary. It was strawberry cake with buttercream icing and fondant, and then vanilla cake with strawberry shortcake filling and strawberry icing covered in fondant. There was also a charm cake with lemon cake with vanilla fondant, topped with chocolate seashells. The groom’s cake was vanilla cake in the shape of a New York Yankees baseball cap.

Behind the Story

loVe sTory: After a long week of teaching ninth grade English, Pete picked me up from school, and we drove to Lake Rabun (north of Atlanta) where we had planned to spend the weekend with his mom. On most Saturday mornings at the lake, we take a walk together, and this morning was no different. On our walk, as we passed a dock on the lake near the marina, Pete motioned for me to come “explore” the dock with him. I told him we were trespassing and we should keep walking, but he was persistent. As I rounded the corner of the dock, he was there on one knee and asked me to marry him! After I said yes, we went to the Lake Rabun Hotel for lunch, just the two of us. When we got back to his lake house, my parents were waiting as a final surprise!

The Big Day: Pete and I chose not to see each other until I walked down the aisle; therefore, that moment of first seeing each other on our wedding day was most anticipated (and was so worth it!). All I could think as I approached Pete at the altar was “don’t cry, don’t cry, don’t cry!” But I did anyways. We would both agree that having all of our family and friends together in one place was the most important thing to us about our wedding, especially since I am from Memphis (where the wedding took place), and Pete is from Atlanta (where we live now). Although there are a lot of favorite moments to choose from, my absolute favorite would have to be when Pete and I walked back down the aisle as husband and wife and could finally be together after not seeing each other all day!

The WeDDing Planning ProCess: One of my best friends got married a year before I did, and she recommended Amy Miller Weddings & Events. As a bridesmaid in my friend’s wedding, I noticed how calm and professional Amy was and instantly kept her in mind in case I got engaged soon! Amy has wonderful taste and would always answer all of our questions, no matter how many times a week my mom or I would e-mail her. On the day of the wedding, I felt relieved to know that Amy was there making sure everything got taken care of and that everything happened on time. She definitely knows a lot about weddings and has an extensive list of vendors in Memphis. We could not have had such a perfect day without her!

Marriage anD aDViCe: A lot of our dating relationship had been long distance, so I am most looking forward to being in the same place as husband and wife. Pete and I had never lived with each other, so it has been fun setting up our new apartment!

Behind the Story

The DeTails: My vision for the wedding was what I liked to call “bedazzled.” I wanted everything to be about bling and sparkle. Our colors were silver, white and a dark metallic blue. I believe that we were able to bring our vision to life by tying in all the different elements from the Save-the-Dates, to the invites to the linens and decor at the reception. I made sure that everything about the wedding had to do with sparkle and bling. I definitely think that the blue up lighting that we had Moonshine Lighting set up to light up the ballroom at the Esplanade really brought our reception to life. The lighting truly made everything in the room glitter.

We did two partial DIY projects for our wedding. One of those projects was to take personalized candy wrappings that we had ordered with Ben’s and my name and our wedding date on them and cover miniature Hershey bars with them. We then placed a large crystal bowl with the tiny candy bars at the guestbook/engraveable picture frame table at the entrance to the reception. After our guests signed our personalized picture frame, they could help themselves to a little treat. The other project that we did was to order personalized cones which we filled with lavender rice (when you step on the rice it gives off a lavender scent) and then pass them out after our ceremony so that all of our guests could throw rice at Ben and me while we left the church and got into our limo to head to the reception. It made for a wonderful photo opportunity!

WeDDing Planning ProCess: We were engaged for 13 months. My mom and I spent months coming up with ideas that would bring our vision to life. We hired Charese Feliciano to be our florist and wedding coordinator. She was the one who made our vision a reality. During the actual planning process, I used a number or wedding organizers, including the Pink Book wedding planner that I had purchased at a wedding show. I also used the planning tools that came with the purchase of Ben’s and my wedding website. We used WeddingWindow for our wedding website. WeddingWindow comes with interactive tools that allow you to keep everything in one place. I was able to keep up with my guest lists, gifts that we received, and thank you notes that were sent.

Debunked! Is wedding advice coming at you from every angle? Determine what’s fact and what’s fiction by debunking these common wedding myths.

IT’S NOT REALLY A WEDDING IF YOU DON’T FOLLOW TRADITION.

The first person to buck tradition and wear white was Queen Victoria (that’s right...brides have not always worn white). This is now taken for granted as standard attire as is a wedding cake, first dance, bouquet toss and something blue. A wedding simply requires an officiant, license and witness. The celebration of said wedding should be an expression of the couple’s personalities and sometimes breaking the rules leads to new traditions that are a better fit than those of past generations.

Thank you notes can be sent by email. While email is the preferred way of communication for many a message, it is generally frowned upon when thanking your wedding guests. Hand written thank-you notes are far from out-dated and though tedious to a generation of texters, it must be done. Appreciate this dying art and take the time to communicate as your grandparents. Years later, a friend will dig out your hand written note, carefully saved. not your email.

THe BriDe CAn OnLY Be GiVen AWAY BY Her FATHer. This myth dates back to the days of old, when daughters were literal property of their fathers and a wedding was merely a business deal for dad to expand his fortunes through the sale of his daughter. While the tradition still sticks to this day, i doubt very much that modern brides would describe themselves as part of dad’s estate. Your aisle escort should be a person that played a significant and supportive role in your path to find true love.

The Bride’s parents pay for wedding and reception, groom’s parents pay for rehearsal dinner. Wouldn’t it be nice if Mom and dad still footed the bill but not so with modern weddings. This myth goes out the window as at least a third of wedding costs are now covered by the couple themselves. Families today are pooling their resources and then together, determining how funds are spent for all related events.

5 WEDDING LUCK (AND MARRIAGE) DEPENDS ON A SIXPENCE, SPIDERS AND SUPERSTITIONS.

Here’s the thing about luck... it all depends on the belief that wearing a certain color, carrying a token or changing your behavior will shift future events to their preferred outcome. luck is mostly used as a way to counter those things completely out of our control and has often been a way of explaining the unexplained. if only making it through the first year of marriage was as easy as saving the top tier of your cake. Make your own luck with careful planning, professional vendors and a positive attitude.

Page 89: Memphis Pink Bride 2011

Vendors will always give a discount if you ask. Wedding vendors are not Mexican bazaars where you haggle the best possible deal. While a vendor may run a promotion, expecting to get a discount because you’re a bride is like expecting your doctor to run a special because you’re a patient. This doesn’t make long-term business sense. instead, plan to attend a local bridal show for show-only specials or giveaways and be honest about your budget and vision with wedding vendors. Professionals will work with brides to find creative ways to stretch your buck and meet their bottom line.

If you can’t foot the bar bill, offer a cash bar.

Cash bars are T-A-C-K-Y... as well as anything else on your wedding day that require your guests pony up cash. Remember these are the same dearly loved friends and family that bought a special outfit, traveled across the country, paid for a hotel room and bought you a gift for your wedding. during the wedding day, guests’ wallets should stay in back pockets and purses. Tactful Solution… if you are set on offering liquor at your wedding but fear the cost, consider a limited bar with only wine and beer (better yet keg beer, often costing half as much per serving as bottled).

Brides on a budget save big with DIY Projects. With the vastness of today’s World Wide Web, the likelihood of finding a bargain can make diY more costly than one thinks. This is even more apparent when your inner crafter is not well matched to make diY magic (but Martha Stewart made it look so easy!). And remember time is money, even if it is your time. Be realistic about how much time will need to be dedicated to diY projects, particularly in the last few weeks leading up to wedding day (when the to-do list is never ending and you’d rather be with your family). if the budget is stretched thin, it might make more sense to skip it all together.

Wedding Day is the Bride’s Day.

While you and your groom are certainly the guests of honor, a bride with her sights set on making wedding day entirely about her is likely to be labeled a bridezilla. Weddings are as much about the happy couple and their new life together as it is a celebration for all the related family members. instead find ways to celebrate your family or close friends and their traditions with your new love and the traditions in store for years to come. This ensures your guests feel part of a truly special event.

Your bridal party must have the same number of bridesmaids and groomsmen.

Today’s bride has thrown out all the rules when it comes to bridal parties. With you closest friends and family by your side on wedding day, trying to stay in the box of specific numbers or even genders just doesn’t work. nowadays, your maid of honor is now your man of honor, pooches are playing ring bearer and dancing to the altar is what makes wedding ceremonies personal, memorable and unique.

Behind the Story

The Big Day: Even though there were a couple of unexpected mishaps, our wedding day was still perfect. I was truly a blushing bride on our wedding day. I was calm and relaxed right up until it was time for me to make my entrance. I had to walk down a rounding staircase and I was so nervous that I would somehow step on my dress and go tumbling down it. Thank goodness, I made it down without a gliche. I almost cried when I saw my dad at the end of the staircase holding his hand out waiting to walk me down the aisle. One of my most memorable moments is probably so cliche, but it is when Chakevin and I laid eyes on each other for the first time. He rubbed my hands and told me how beautiful I was. The only sad part about our wedding is that my 104 year old great-grandmother was not able to attend. However, I was so overjoyed and felt so loved. We had lots of family members that flew in or drove from many different states to help celebrate our special day.

WeDDing Planning: We didn’t have a theme, but I did have a vision of a wedding that was centered around elegance and romance. Our colors were spice, sunshine and ivory with hints of peach and silver. We chose these colors because we were going to go with Khaki suits for the groomsmen, but after Chakevin had the hardest time finding the right color, we ended up with ivory tuxedos.

We were engaged for 6 months so we didn’t have a lot of time to plan for our wedding. Our wedding planner was very helpful. Our decorator was thorough and explained every detail down to the exact name and type of each flower that we had selected. She did the underwater flower centerpiece that I requested at the last minute perfectly. The most important thing to us about our wedding was that our guests have a great time that included plenty of drinks and food to eat. Our reception was held in the ballroom. It was very entertaining. Chakevin was so excited about our first dance. It was not the typical first dance everyone expected from us. We did a Tango to “Por Una Cabeza”. Everyone loved it. There was a part in the dance where he picked me up and spun me around. I still remember holding my breath until I landed safely on my feet.

aDViCe: The best advice I can give a bride and groom while planning their wedding is to start planning as soon as possible. Prepare for the unexpected. Set time frames and deadlines. Stick to them! Don’t be obsessed with getting every little detail perfect. No one will ever notice that everything was not perfect, neither will you. Your wedding day will be perfect to you regardless. I look forward to my husband and I raising a family and living a long life filled with joy and happiness.

Behind the Story

loVe sTory: I met Ben in my senior year of high school when he was a sophomore at The University of Tennessee Knoxville. Our love story, however, is not about the day we met, but about how we became a family. Shortly after becoming exclusive, we found out that we would soon be parents. Despite the obstacles in the rush to grow up, we found that we were a phenomenal team. Raising our son, Brayden, brought us closer and closer together. Then, on Christmas Eve of Brayden’s first holiday season, Ben got on his knee and asked me to spend ‘forever’ with him. In that moment I knew that our rushed little life had slowly evolved into an opportunity for a lifetime together.

The Big Day: The big day started out with my childhood friend, Allyse Anderson, and I clipping bradford pear branches from a nearby field in the pouring rain for centerpieces. We picked up the remaining centerpiece flowers and headed to the Botanic Gardens to begin the floral arrangements. My other bridesmaids were setting up tables, chairs, and linens when we got there, and four and a half hours (and one missed hair appointment) later, the reception space was perfect. In a whirlwind of hairspray and bronzer, we emerged for pictures with Mary Helen, and there was no turning back from there. Regardless of the rain, forgetting the veil, and a cream cheese confusion, I’d say we pulled it off pretty well.

The DeTails: My husband is an officer for the Memphis Police Department, and I surprised him with a grooms cake made completely of donuts, topped with a squad car to celebrate his passion for his career. We included pictures of our family members at their own weddings behind our wedding cake to pay respects to those who have been role models in their own loving relationships. My son and I painted birdhouses to occupy the kid’s table along with crayons and coloring books. We also collected fun and colorful candy to make a kid friendly candy corner.

We didn’t let the rain stop our fun! I told the bridesmaids to find fun and quirky rainboots to wear when we heard about the weather. Embracing and adapting to the unexpected is what brought Ben and I together in the first place.

We wanted our son to be as involved as possible in the wedding. We had conversations for months leading up to the wedding about what this meant for our family and why we were doing it. His favorite part was definetly going to the cake testing! He was so excited to give his opinion on which to choose. On the big day, he walked our flower girl down the aisle but was quick to inform guests that he was the Best Man. He ate donuts off the groom’s cake all night and danced so hard he fell asleep in my arms at the end of the celebration. It was very special for our family to go through this big event together, and Brayden still talks about it to this day.

Behind the Story

loVe sTory: Donny and I worked together for 8 months prior to dating. Our cubicles were next to each other at the office. We slowly became friends as we learned to tolerate one another’s differences and opinions. We laugh about the fact that initially we got on each other’s nerves – he told me that he used to tell his best man pretty girls were so difficult to deal with- he would never date me! As we learned to appreciate each other, we just really grew on each other and our relationship developed beyond just friends. When I came home from work, Donny sent the dog out into the garage with a note attached that said, “If you want to be my mommy forever, say ‘yes’ to Daddy’s question. If not, crumple up paper and discard.” When I looked up, Donny was holding the ring in his hands.

The Big Day: The most anticipated part of my big day happened when I was walking down the aisle and seeing Donny. I was trying to hold it together so I would not cry. I was not nervous until about five minutes before, and then it all hit me. He was very open about what he wanted my dress to look like – I was eager to see how he was going to react to what I chose. I think when he heard how much I paid for my dress he was a little nervous about whether or not he was going to like it.

People ask me what my favorite wedding moment was and I always explain the story when Donny sprained his ankle two days before the wedding and was limping down the aisle. During pictures at the church, we locked ourselves out of the van with the van running and then locked ourselves out of the bridal room at the church. Luckily, we were able to call a locksmith for the van – while were waiting on the priest to arrive, the bridesmaid tried to talk the locksmith into opening the bridal room since the flowers were locked inside. It is the crazy things that make the most memorable memories. Outside the unexpected, I would say it was when the dueling pianos had Donny and I stand up and sing and do this crazy dance to Joy to the World.

The WeDDing Planning ProCess: I made all of the centerpieces, bouquets, and altar flowers for the ceremony myself. I purchased the flowers from Costco and put everything together myself. My father also printed all of the wedding invitations, RSVP cards, rehearsal dinner invitations, menus, and programs. He did an awesome job. I think my favorite part of the wedding planning would have to be the wine tasting for the rehearsal dinner. My parents, Donny and I, and our best man went down to South of Beale after our engagement pictures for dinner. They have so many choices and options at the restaurant to choose from, and I think we tried every one on the menu. There was no stress as most parts of the wedding planning can be – we really laughed and enjoyed ourselves.

Behind the Story

loVe sTory: When he proposed to me, Erik wined me and dined me! He took me to a restaurant called Top Of the World, a revolving restaurant on the 106th floor of the Stratosphere hotel/casino. We were celebrating another school semester (for him) coming to a close. We had to go through metal detectors and empty our pockets before getting on the elevators. Of course, I was curious, and watched as he emptied his pockets…car keys, chapstick, wallet, eye glasses. Nothing resembling a ring. We had a wonderful dinner and very enjoyable night. I was stuffed and wanted to go to the outside observatory upstairs. So we went and walked around for a bit. Then, he got down on one knee and pulled out his eyeglass case, where a beautiful diamond engagement ring was hidden!

The Big Day: The event I anticipated the most on our wedding day was having Erik see me for the first time, as I walked down the aisle. It was everything I imagined and more. He teared up and I think we took each other’s breath away. Amazing and unforgettable moment. We had a fairly traditional Methodist ceremony with vows and the giving of rings.

Our first dance was a medley and a huge surprise! In December, we began taking private dance lessons with an instructor in Vegas. We decided to put together several songs and she choreographed our first dance. We took lessons about once a week, and practiced 2-3 nights a week in our garage. And we didn’t tell a soul!. We had so much fun with all of this that we added a second surprise for our guests…about halfway through the reception, we broke out into a fast swing dance. Everyone was blown away and shocked by our secret dances. It was and will always be one of the highlights. And we had a blast learning it!

The WeDDing Planning ProCess: We wanted to bring a little Vegas into our reception because it’s where we met and where we call home, but we didn’t want it to be cheesy. Instead of numbering our dinner tables, we named each of them after a different Vegas hotel. We went to each of those hotels and bought real $1 poker chips. I made picture frames with a picture of the hotel to decorate each table. Then I labeled each chip…everyone found their name, then flipped over the chip to see which table they were seated at.

I enjoyed the entire wedding planning process. I never stressed (thank you, wedding planners!) and really enjoyed all of it. The icing on the cake though was getting to see all of that hard work pay off and see all of the plans come together.

Behind the Story

loVe sTory: Sam and I met at a mutual friend’s apartment at college. The first time I met him, I pretty much ignored him. Obviously, things have changed a bit since then! We soon became inseparable!

After a day filled with some of our favorite activities, such as going to downtown Starkville, MS, for ice cream, feeding the fish at a local pond, and going out to dinner, he took me back to the spot where he asked me to be his girlfriend, which was the football stadium at Mississippi State University. We went onto the field, he knelt down, and, after telling me he loved me, asked me to marry him!

The ring Sam picked was actually the first ring I ever tried on. When I saw the look on his face, I was fairly certain that he would buy that particular one, and I was so glad when I found out later that he did!

The Big Day: When I walked down the aisle toward Sam, all I kept thinking was just how excited I was that this long awaited moment was actually happening. My favorite wedding moment was when Sam and I entered our reception. We got to walk down the grand staircase in the Pink Palace to our cheering guests below. I felt like a princess! The Pink Palace is truly breathtaking both inside and out, and its rich history endows it with the essence of classic Memphis. I love how the variety of rooms at the Pink Palace allowed our guests areas to eat, dance, or just sit and chat. It was a perfect day! We danced as a married couple for the first time to “Say Hey (I Love You)” by Michael Franti. I think now that we’re married, am most looking forward to waking up every day for the rest of my life with my best friend at my side.

The DeTails: My dress was a Casablanca strapless gown with embroidery on the front bodice and all down the back and train. I knew it was the one when my mom, two sisters, and college roommate all started crying when I walked out in it! My something blue was a small blue bow on the inside of my garter, which I ordered from Latvia. I liked the classic neutral tones of champagne and cream as my wedding colors and I also included touches of pink to add some pizzazz. In addition to having something old, new, borrowed, and blue, I had henna tattoos on my hands and feet in the tradition of the other Indian brides in my family.

Details and the guest gifts were very important to me. My mom and I scoured stores for the perfect candy for our wedding guest favors, which were bags of candy from a candy bar. When it came to the wedding cake we chose vanilla almond flavored with white buttercream icing. Sam is notorious for wearing his cowboy boots everywhere, including church and his medical school interview. Consequently, his groom’s cake was a cake replica of one of his boots resting next to a German chocolate cake.

loVe sTory: We had gone to Dallas to look at places because I wanted him to move there, too. I ended up spending the day with a girlfriend at the spa (spur of the moment or so I thought - he had planned the whole thing!). Later, he picked me up because he wanted to show me a condo. The condo was all set-up, he proposed there because he had decided to rent it and make the move. My ring was something that we had chosen together. Matter of fact, we chose both of our rings together!

The Big Day: During my venture to find the perfect dress I was teased that “my entourage” was with me. But really there was my mom, two sisters, and three best friends. It was the last thing I had expected. I had already picked a dress in Dallas, but before buying my mom wanted me to look in Memphis. I laughed and goofed off with all the dresses until I put this on. To add to my wedding gown I decided that my “something blue” would be my shoes. When it came to choosing the bridesmaid dresses I didn’t want to look back and think I can’t believe I made them wear yellow (or fushia) so it was easy for me. I went with black.

I think the most anticipated moment of my wedding ceremony had to be actually walking down the aisle. I was just so excited it was finally happening. Then there was our first dance, Flower by Amos Lee. It was perfect!

Chris and I picked three different cakes for the wedding…banana nut, Bavarian chocolate chip, and yellow cake. For the groom’s cake we decided to order Gigi’s Cupcakes and set them out for our guests! Overall I think that Chris and I just wanted to have fun. So many people had come in town to be with us, so we wanted to enjoy being with them and hope that they had as much fun as us.

The WeDDing Planning ProCess: I chose Amy Miller Weddings & Events, my wedding planner, because we had heard so many great things about her. I love all the weddings she has been involved with! We (Moms really) did the candy table and hotel guest gift bags. We decided that a little DIY project would make the feel more personable. I think that I have been planning my wedding since I was little so it was all very exciting and different. For the most part, I think that I was excited to see projects coming to an end knowing that the big day was just around the corner. I like being able to mark things off my “to-do” list.

For our honeymoon we went to Bora Bora and it was amazing. The thing that we have the most in common is travel. We love traveling to new places and seeing the world together.

Behind the Story

your loVe sTory: Austin and Christy met the summer of their 10th grade year of high school in a Bridges program at the University of Memphis. Christy and Austin dated for 8 years before he popped the big question. Austin proposed at their favorite picnic spot by the river in Harbor Town over Valentine’s day weekend.

The Big Day: Our wedding day flew by so fast! The most memorable moment before the ceremony was when our photographer, Brenda Jobe, planned for Austin and I to meet at a door where we held hands without seeing each other, as she took pictures. It was such a special moment.

The DeTails: We really wanted a traditional Roman Catholic wedding with a fall floral theme. Our colors were plum, dark orange, and cream. Susan did an amazing job with our flowers. She is very creative! Our wedding party dressed in black and white. My bridal gown and bridesmaids dresses were all purchased at Lows Bridal in Brinkley, AR. Our cake was a delicious 4 tiered round cake. Each layer was a different flavor. We topped our cake with a floral arrangement similar to that of the bridesmaids. All of our colors coordinated perfectly with our October evening wedding. Drapers was our caterer and baker. They were wonderful to work with. They are a family owned business, which we loved immediately. Our photographer was perfect! She captured every detail from engagement all the way to the end of the reception. We could not have asked for a better photographer. She was incredibly easy to work with, creative, and very open minded. Austin and I definitely recommend taking your time when choosing your photographer. Brenda Jobe with Photiq captured every moment of our celebration without missing a detail. We are very thankful to have had such a wonderful experience.

The WeDDing Planning ProCess: We were engaged for 9 months. Our moms were the most helpful throughout the wedding planning process. Our wedding would not have been possible without the help and generosity of our wonderful families. The best part of our wedding was spending time with all of our family and friends, many who traveled from many miles away.

The WeDDing BuDgeT: Our wedding budget was between $15,000-$20,000 (ceremony and reception). We stayed within budget by having our ceremony at our home parish, St. Peter Catholic Church. We splurged on the wedding gown and decorations.

Marriage anD aDViCe: Remember to cherish every moment of the planning and ceremony. Since we have been married, we have enjoyed traveling and cooking together. We look forward to living together, happily ever after!
