• Loyola, Md., has one player — Sean Tuohy Jr. (Briarcrest Christian School) — that calls Mem-phis home.

• On the Tigers’ side, seven players hail from the Memphis area. Tarik Black, Chris Crawford, Trey Draper, Ferrakohn Hall, Joe Jackson and Adonis Thomas all are from the Bluff City. Freshman Anthony Cole is from Arlington, a suburb of Memphis.

BLUFF CITY VERSUS CHARM CITY • When Memphis and Loyola, Md., face off Sun-

day, it won’t only be a game between the two schools. The contest is also a battle between the Bluff City and Baltimore, also known as “Charm City.”

• The Tigers have seven players on the roster rep-resenting the city of Memphis.

• On the other bench, Loyola, Md., has four play-ers from Baltimore. The four Greyhounds that call the “Charm City” home are Dylon Cormier, Josh Forney, Jordan Latham and R.J. Williams.

A CHARMER AND A TIGER • One player in Sunday’s Memphis-Loyola, Md.,

encounter can claim both Memphi and Balti-more as hometowns.

• Junior guard Antonio Barton was born and raised in Baltimore, the “Charm City,” and loves his true hometown roots.

• But, since becoming a Tiger in 2010, the city of Memphis has adopted Barton, giving the 6-foot-2 guard a second hometown.

TIGERS LOVE HOLIDAY HOOPS • The holidays are a time to spread good cheer.

Loyola, Md., match-up have NCAA title rings. • Memphis head coach Josh Pastner won his

NCAA title as a player on the 1996-97 Arizona squad.

• Loyola, Md., head coach Jimmy Patsos won his NCAA crown in 2001-02 as an assistant coach on Gary Williams’ staff at Maryland.

FINAL FOUR REUNION SUNDAY • Sunday’s contest is a 2001 NCAA Final Four

reunion for the two head coaches. • Memphis head coach Josh Pastner and Loyola,

Md., head coach Jimmy Patsos both were at the 2001 NCAA Final Four in Minneapolis, Minn.

• Pastner was on Lute Olson’s Arizona staff that defeatedMichiganStateinthenationalsemifi-nal before falling to Duke in the title contest.

TIGERS LOVE THOSE LONG HOMESTANDS • The Tigers opened a seven-game homestand

Nov. 29 when they hosted UT Martin at Fe-dExForum. The seven-game home stretch con-cludes Sunday, Dec. 30 against Loyola, Md.

• This seven-game homestand is the longest since 2008-09 when the Tigers also played seven-straight home games in December and early January. Memphis posted a 6-1 record in that homestand, with the lone loss coming to No. 11 Syracuse.

• To find a longer homestand inTigers history, one has to go all the way back to the 1979-80 campaign when the Tigers played nine-straight at home from Dec. 1, 1979-Jan. 3, 1980. Mem-phis went 7-2 in that homestand.

HISTORY OF ALL-MEMPHIS STARTING FIVES(*Note: In this research, the Memphis area suburbs are included.)

Research by Matt Dillon, Tigers hoops color analyst and historian

TIGERS ‘BOUNDING THE BOARDS IN2012-13 • A lot of talk in head coach Josh Pastner’sfirst

three seasons centered about rebounding and the Tigers’ frustration in that area.

• Well, it looks as if that’s been corrected early on in the 2012-13 campaign.

• Memphis is out-rebounding its opponents by an average margin of +6.2 boards per game (36.8-30.6), which ranks second in Conference USA.

• The Tigers have won the board battle in eight of their 11 contests this season, including games with Minnesota, Ohio and Louisville.

• The following shows how the Tigers have done ontheglassinPastner’stenure(first11gamesof each season only):

DECEMBER’S BEEN GOOD FOR TIGERS • Since the 1999-2000 season, the Tigers have a

67-29 record (.698 winning percentage) when playing in the month of December.

• Memphis was 5-3 last December. • The Tigers have won 42 of its last 54 December

contests (.778 winning percentage), dating back to the 2004-05 season.

TIGERS NON-CONFERENCE SUCCESS • Since 1999-2000, the Tigers have a non-confer-

ence record (including postseason) of 182-64 for a 74.0 winning percentage.

• In 2011-12, Memphis had a 13-6 record against non-conference opponents (including postsea-son).

THE BAHAMAS AND THE AFTER • Tiger Nation may want to refer to “it” as T.B.

(through Bahamas) and A.B. (After Bahamas). • That’s the way head coach Josh Pastner and

his squad are looking at it. • Despite the 1-2 record in the Battle 4 Atlantis in

The Bahamas, Pastner and his team are taking what they learned from that tournament and us-ing those lessons to get better.

• The numbers below prove it (T.B. is through Bahamas; A.B. is after Bahamas):

THE JOHNSON EFFECT • Most of the talk coming into 2012-13 was how

junior college transfer Geron Johnson was go-ing to help the Tigers offensively.

• However, while his offense will eventually come (it came in the form of a season-high 21 points versus Ohio Dec. 5), it’s Johnson’s de-fense that has helped Memphis early on.

• Johnson had to sit out the Tigers’ first threegames due to an NCAA-imposed suspension, but has seen action in the last eight contests.

• The following shows the defensive improve-mentwithJohnsononthefloor:

D.J.’S CAREER NIGHT/PART II • Earlier this season, D.J. Stephens set career

highs on the offensive end versus Minnesota Nov. 23, scoring 15 points and hitting three treys.

• In the Tigers’ Dec. 28 game versus Oral Rob-erts, the 6-foot-5 forward put up career numbers defensively.

• Stephens posted career bests for rebounds (14) and blocked shots (5) in the win over the Golden Eagles.

• His previous career highs were 11 rebounds ver-sus Western Kentucky Dec. 4, 2010, and four blocks versus Southern Miss Feb. 12, 2011.

MEMPHIS RECEIVES NCAA PUBLICRECOGNITION AWARD FOR THIRD YEAR • For the third-straight year, the Memphis men’s

basketball team received an NCAA Public Rec-ognition Award, given to teams with APRs in the top-10 percent of their respective sports.

• Memphis was one of 13 schools in the nation to receive an NCAA Public Recognition Award and also participate in the 2012 NCAA Tourna-ment.

• Memphis also was the only men’s basketball program in Conference USA to earn an NCAA Public Recognition Award.

• The NCAA Public Recognition Awards are based on the sports’ most-recent multi-year Ac-ademic Progress Rate (APR). This year, the top performing APR scores ranged from 978 to a perfect 1,000. The most-recent APRs are multi-year rates based on scores from the 2007-08, 2008-09, 2009-10 and 2010-11 academic years.

“G” - FENSE, “G” - FENSE • Junior Geron Johnson, who is called “G” by

histeammates, hasdefinitelyhelpedtheTigers’defense, and the team’s defensive numbers prove it.

• But, his individual defensive performance in Memphis’ Dec. 28 win over Oral Roberts was impressive.

• In the contest, Johnson was the primary defend-er on the Golden Eagles’ leading scorer, Warren Niles.

• Niles entered the contest with a 21.3 scoring av-erage (ninth in the nation) and a 53 percent clip from the arc.

• “G” held Niles to only two points on 1-of-11 shootingfromthefieldand0-of-6fromthearc.

DOUBLE YOUR PLEASURE • Freshman Shaq Goodwin posted the Tigers’

second double-double of 2012-13 with his 17-point, 12-board performance versus UT Martin Nov. 29.

• The following tracks Memphis’ double-doubles this season:

• The 12 boards were the most by a Tigers fresh-man since Kareem Cooper pulled down 13 re-bounds versus Southern Miss on Feb. 14, 2006.

around the country year after year, Memphis’ Josh Pastner remains among the youngest head coaches (11th) in NCAA Division I hoops, and the following shows that:
