February 2, 1957: Memphis beat No. 3 Louisville 81-78 at Ellis Auditorium in downtown Memphis. It was the Tigers’ fi rst win over the Cardinals after six-straight losses. The game was the catalyst to the 1957 Memphis team fi nishing second in the NIT and fi nishing the sea-son ranked in the top-20 of the polls for the fi rst time. The win put the Tigers program on the map nationally. All-American Win Wilfong scored 20 points for the Ti-gers. U of L All-American Charlie Tyra had 21 points and 12 rebounds.

March 6, 1971: Louisville defeated Memphis 102-73 at Freedom Hall in the regular-season fi nale for both teams. Al Vilcheck and Mike Lawhon scored 19 points apiece for U of L, but the Tigers’ James Douglas led all scorers with a game high 22. A sidebar to the game was an ugly fi rst-half altercation between Louisville’s Mike Lawhon and the Tigers’ Fred Horton. After words between the two players, Lawhon struck Horton in the back of the head going up court and a fi ght involving several players ensued. An incensed Horton picked up a metal folding chair and ran toward Lawhon swing-ing it over his head. Memphis assistant coach Wayne Yates raced to grab Horton near mid-court before se-curity guards and police helped shove Horton to the Memphis bench. Horton was handcuffed by a security guard, but went back onto the court before being eject-ed and removed from the bench area. The incident was the second in two seasons between the rivals and was a continuation of a feud that began in the season fi nale the year before (1969-70) in Memphis. In that 1969-70 season fi nale, Louisville’s Al Vilcheck punched Horton while leaving the court following U of L’s 83-82 win at the Mid-South Coliseum and then ran into the dress-ing room. The sucker punch opened a cut on Horton’s right eyebrow and set the stage for Horton’s retaliation a year later.

March 11, 1972: Fourth-ranked Louisville beat the 11th-ranked Tigers 83-72 in a Missouri Valley Confer-ence (MVC) Playoff game – a game that made the ri-valry even more intense. Despite defeating U of L twice in the regular season and sharing the Missouri Valley Conference regular season title, the MVC offi ce called for a playoff game between the Tigers and Cardinals to be held at Memorial Gym on the Vanderbilt campus. Louisville took a 37-35 lead at the intermission on a half court shot by Jim Price. Six U of L players were led into double fi gures by Henry Bacon’s 16 points. Don Holcombe had a double-double for the Tigers (game-high 21 points and 15 rebounds), while Larry Finch tossed in 18. The Tigers’ loss put them into the NIT, and Louisville got the Missouri Valley’s automatic bid into the NCAA.

March 7, 1982: The 13th-ranked Tigers beat Louisville 73-62 at the Mid-South Coliseum in Memphis in the Metro Conference Tournament championship game. All-American Keith Lee posted a double-double of 27 points-15 rebounds and was named Tournament MVP. Wiley Smith’s 17 points led the U of L. It was Mem-phis’ fi rst conference tournament title since winning Mississippi Valley Conference Tournament in 1929.

March 8, 1987: The Tigers, under fi rst-year head coach Larry Finch, beat Louisville for third time in the 1986-87 season in the Metro Conference Tournament cham-pionship game at Freedom Hall 75-52. It was also the second time for Memphis to beat Louisville at Freedom Hall during the 1986-87 season. The loss was U of L’s only Metro Conference Tournament championship game defeat on its home court in Metro Conference his-tory. U of L, the defending national champion, ended the season with an 18-14 record and did not receive an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. Despite winning the Metro title, Memphis was on probation and ineli-gible for postseason play. As a result, for the only time in its history, the Metro Conference had no teams in the NCAA Tournament fi eld. The 23-point win was the Ti-gers’ largest versus Louisville in the series. The Tigers Marvin Alexander, the Metro Conference Tournament MVP, scored 18 points. Herbert Crook scored 14 for U of L. Sophomore Pervis Ellison, the 1986 Final Four MVP, was held to only 3 points.

February 20, 1989: The Tigers defeated 10th-ranked Louisville in Freedom Hall. Memphis jumped out to a 24-0 lead with 13:11 in the fi rst half. Louisville made a run and pulled to within two points at 66-64 at the 2:17 mark of the second half, but Memphis held on for a 72-67 upset. Elliot Perry scored 25 points to lead the Tigers, and Pervis Ellison had a double-double of 23 points and 19 rebounds for Louisville.

February 19, 2003: The Tigers beat 4th-ranked Lou-isville in Freedom Hall in John Calipari’s fi rst U of M coaching appearance on the Cardinals’ homecourt. An-tonio Burks led fi ve Tigers in double fi gures with 16, and Chris Massie added a double-double of 12 points and 11 rebounds. Reece Gaines led Louisville with 19 points. It was Memphis’ fi rst win over a top-fi ve ranked team since beating 3rd-ranked Michigan in 73-72 in the 1996 Rainbow Classic.

March 12, 2005: No. 6 Louisville edged the Tigers 75-74 in the championship game of the Conference USA Tournament. It was the second time the Cardinals defeated the Tigers at the new FedExForum during the 2004-05 season. With Louisville leading 75-73 in the fi nal seconds, Tigers guard Darius Washington Jr. was fouled by the Cardinals on a three-point attempt at the buzzer. Washington hit the fi rst free throw, but missed the next two and crumbled to the fl oor at the free throw line as Louisville claimed the Conference USA Tourna-ment title. Francisco Garcia paced the winning Cardi-nals with 19 points, and Darius Washington Jr. had 20 for the Tigers. The loss left the U of M with a 19-15 regular season record and denied the Tigers an NCAA Tournament berth. Memphis went on to appear in the NIT Final Four in New York, while Louisville reached the NCAA Final Four in St. Louis.

The Rivalry’s Top Games(compiled by Memphis radio analyst and Tigers basketball historian Matt Dillon)

• Siva is the squad’s top playmaker, averaging 5.7 assists (51 total).

• Smith is Louisville’s top three-point threat, hit-ting 38.5 percent from the arc.

• The Cardinals are shooting 44.9 percent from the fi eld, 31.4 percent from the arc and 68 per-cent from the free throw line.

• Louisville is out-rebounding its foes by an av-erage margin of +8.9 boards per game (40.3-31.4).

• The Cardinals average over 12 steals per game (12.4 spg) and force opponents to turn the ball over 20 times per contest (22.1).

MEMPHIS VS. THE BIG EAST • The Tigers are 126-142 all-time versus current

members of the BIG EAST Conference. • Memphis has played Cincinnati (31-36), Con-

TIGERS ON THE RADIO All Memphis basketball games are broad-cast on the Tigers’ network fl agship station, WREC 600AM. Dave Woloshin calls the play-by-play, while Matt Dillon serves as the color analyst. Dillon and Forrest Goodman (in stu-dio) host the pre- and postgame shows. WREC 600AM also broadcasts Josh Past-ner’s weekly radio show, which is held at the Lynchburg Legends Bar & Grill located in the East Memphis DoubleTree Inn. Forrest Good-man serves as host of the weekly call-in show. The Pastner radio weekly call-in show started Nov. 26.

JOSH PASTNERTELEVISION SHOW

Head coach Josh Pastner’s weekly televi-sion coach’s show is televised every Sunday night at 10 p.m. (CT) during the season by FOX 13/WHBQ-TV in Memphis. The show began Dec. 2. Dave Woloshin and Matt Stark serve as the show’s co-hosts.

1), Seton Hall (3-1), Syracuse (1-3), USF (18-3) and Villanova (4-8).

• Memphis has played 13 of the 15 BIG EAST schools, leaving Notre Dame and Rutgers as the only two league programs the Tigers have not faced.

• Most of the contests versus Cincinnati, DePaul, Louisville, Marquette and USF were former league games (Missouri Valley, Metro, Great Midwest, Conference USA).

• Since the start of the 2005-06 campaign (when the BIG EAST realigned), Memphis is 9-7 against teams from the BIG EAST.

• The last time the Tigers played a BIG EAST op-ponent was last season. In fact, Memphis had three games against BIG EAST foes in 2011-12. The Tigers lost to Georgetown twice (91-88 ot in EA Sports Maui Invitational; 70-59 in Wash-ington, D.C.) and Louisville 95-87.

SEE YOU NEXT YEAR! • Louisville is the only BIG EAST Conference

opponent for the Tigers this season, but in 2013-14, Memphis will see BIG EAST foes on a regular basis as a member of the league.

• Memphis joins the BIG EAST July 1, 2013, as a full member.

• The BIG EAST Conference extended Memphis an invite to join the league last February.

A GOOD OMEN? • The Tigers hope so, as they have a 3-3 record

versus Louisville when Memphis is unranked and the Cardinals are ranked since 2000-01.

TIGERS, CARDINALS AMONG ELITE GROUP • Memphis is among the winningest NCAA Divi-

sion I programs since 2000-01 and 2005-06, but it doesn’t end there.

• The Tigers are a part of another elite group at the NCAA Division I level.

• Memphis is one of nine programs that has won 20 or more games each of the last 10 seasons.

• Louisville is also a part of this elite group in NCAA Division I hoops.

• The following lists the nine NCAA Division I programs that have 20 or more wins the each of the last 10 years (2002-03 to 2011-12):

PASTNER VERSUS PITINO • Although this is the second time Josh Pastner

and Rick Pitino face off as head coaches, the two were on opposing sidelines two times prior to the Dec. 17, 2011, match-up.

• The most memorable of the two previous Past-ner-Pitino meetings came in the 1997 NCAA Tournament championship game. Pastner was a player on the Arizona squad that defeated Pi-tino’s Kentucky team 84-79 for the NCAA title.

• The next Pastner-Pitino encounter was in the 2006-07 season. Pastner was an assistant coach at Arizona that year when the Wildcats defeated Pitino’s Louisville squad 72-65 in the 2006 Jim-my V Classic in New York City.

IT’S A (NCAA) RING THING • Both head coaches in Saturday’s Memphis-

Louisville match-up have NCAA title rings. • Memphis head coach Josh Pastner won his

NCAA title as a player on the 1996-97 Arizona squad. Arizona defeated Rick Pitino’s Kentucky team for the championship.

• The year before (1996-97), Louisville head coach Rick Pitino led Kentucky to the NCAA championship.

YOUNG COACH #1 VS. YOUNG COACH #2 • Around 31 years before Memphis hired a young

32-year-old Josh Pastner to take over the Ti-gers hoops program, an even younger 25-year-old Rick Pitino was hired as the head coach at Boston University.

• In his three-plus seasons at Memphis (currently in fourth year), Pastner has guided the Tigers to an 81-31 record, a C-USA regular-season

FedExForumThe Home of The Tigers

The 2012-13 season marks the ninth for the Tigers in their home arena, FedExForum, which offi cially opened in September, 2004. Lo-cated just a few feet off Beale Street on historic Highway 61, FedEx-Forum rises to extend the heart of the Memphis entertainment district. Memphis plays all of its 2012-13 home contests in the 18,400-seat arena, which served as the host site for the 2012 Conference USA Tournaments (men/women). FedExForum also hosted the 2005-09 Conference USA Tournaments, 2009 NCAA Men’s South Regional and 2010 NCAA Women’s South Regional. At 135 feet high, FedExForum provides a new backdrop for historic Beale Street. The 805,850 square-feet arena, covering 13.8 acres, features fi ve levels as well as state-of-the-art locker rooms and facilities for sports teams, as well as an exceptional dining and enter-tainment experiences for its patrons.

BEST HOMECOURT ADVANTAGE • Since 2004-05, Memphis has won 150 games at

FedExForum, the most home wins in the coun-try over that span of time.

• Louisville is tied for the No. 5 spot on the list with 136 homecourt victories since 2004-05.

• The following are the top-fi ve programs with the most home wins since 2004-05 (credit to former Memphis Athletics Communications As-sistant Bryan McEldowney for compiling this list):

TIGERS SUCCESS AT FEDEXFORUM • The Tigers have a 150-17 overall record (.898

winning percentage) at FedExForum since moving to the arena for the 2004-05 campaign.

• Since the 2005 Conference USA Tournament, Memphis has won 140 of its last 151 home games (.927 winning percentage).

• Against non-conference foes (regular-season only) at FedExForum since 2004-05, the Tigers have a 68-10 mark (.872 winning percentage).

• Under head coach Josh Pastner, Memphis is 32-4 (.889 winning percentage) against non-league foes at FedExForum (includes 5-0 record so far this year).

TIGERS LOVE THOSE LONG HOMESTANDS • The Tigers opened a seven-game homestand

Nov. 29 when they hosted UT Martin at FedEx-Forum. The seven-game home stretch continues Saturday, Dec. 15 against No. 6/6 Louisville.

Page 6: Memphis Men's Basketball Game Notes vs Louisville - Dec. 15, 2012

• After Saturday, Memphis hosts Lipscomb Dec. 20, Oral Roberts Dec. 28 and Loyola, Md., Dec. 30.

• This seven-game homestand is the longest since 2008-09 when the Tigers also played seven-straight home games in December and early January. Memphis posted a 6-1 record in that homestand, with the lone loss coming to No. 11 Syracuse.

• To fi nd a longer homestand in Tigers history, one has to go all the way back to the 1979-80 campaign when the Tigers played nine-straight at home from Dec. 1, 1979-Jan. 3, 1980. Mem-phis went 7-2 in that homestand.

• The following are the longest Memphis homes-tands since 1974-75 and the Tigers’ record dur-ing those homestands:

(.732 winning percentage) in November. • Of the 19 November losses, 11 were to national-

ly-ranked teams. • The Tigers are 35-8 (.814 winning percentage)

in November the last eight seasons (2005-06 to 2012-13), with three of the eight setbacks com-ing to ranked opponents.

JOSH PASTNERHead Coach81-31 Record4th Year in 2012-13

• A Kingwood, Texas, na-tive, Pastner was hired as the University of Mem-phis’ 17th head coach on Apr. 7, 2009.

• Pastner posted a record of 75-29 at Memphis in his fi rst three seasons, the most victories by a Tigers head coach in that span of time.

• Last year, Pastner guided Memphis to a 26-9 overall record and a 13-3 Conference USA mark. The Tigers swept the C-USA regular season and tournament titles and earned an NCAA Tournament berth.

• In each of his three seasons, Pastner has led the Ti-gers to a 20-win campaign and a postseason berth (2010 NIT; 2011, 2012 NCAA)

• Pastner served as an assistant coach for the Tigers in the 2008-09 season.

• Prior to joining the Memphis basketball family, Pastner spent 12 years of his college basketball life at Arizona as a player, staff member and assistant coach.

• While in Tucson, Pastner was a member of Wildcats squads that made 12-straight NCAA Tournament ap-pearances and posted a 290-103 record (1997-2008).

• Pastner was a player on the 1996-97 Arizona team that won the NCAA title.

THE JOHNSON EFFECT • Most of the talk coming into 2012-13 was how

junior college transfer Geron Johnson was go-ing to help the Tigers offensively.

• However, while his offense will eventually come (it came in the form of a season-high 21 points versus Ohio Dec. 5), it’s Johnson’s de-fense that has helped Memphis early on.

• Johnson had to sit out the Tigers’ fi rst three games due to an NCAA-imposed suspension, but has seen action in the last three contests.

84-58 win over Ohio Dec. 5. He scored 21 points on 8-of-11 FG, 3-of-5 treys and 2-of-3 FT. He also had three boards, three assists and three steals in 29 minutes.

A MEMPHIS STARTING FIVE • For the fi rst time in over 20 years, the Tigers put

a starting fi ve on the fl oor all from the city of Memphis in their Nov. 12 season opener.

• The starting fi ve from the Bluff City were Tarik Black, Chris Crawford, Ferrakohn Hall, Joe Jackson and Adonis Thomas in Memphis’ Nov. 12 game versus North Florida. The same all-Memphis lineup started the Nov. 17 Samford and Nov. 22 VCU games.

• Prior to this year’s season opener, the last time the Tigers placed an all-Memphis starting fi ve on the fl oor in a season opener was 1987-88. In that year’s season opener versus Jackson State, the all-Memphis starting fi ve were Rodney Douglas, Sylvester Gray, Marvin Alexander, Dwight Boyd and Elliot Perry.

• In overall games, the last time an all-Memphis starting fi ve played for the Tigers was on “Se-nior Day” in 1994-95 season. That game’s (ver-sus Dayton) starting fi ve were Justin Wimmer, Marcus Nolan, Lorenzen Wright, Leon Mitchell and Jason Fox.

• The Tigers’ all-time record in which an all-Memphis lineup started is 134-42 (.761 winning percentage; includes 2012-13).

• The most-successful, all-Memphis starting lineup was the one consisting of Baskerville Holmes-Keith Lee-William Bedford-Vincent Askew-Andre Turner. That all-Memphis start-ing fi ve went 28-3 in the 1984-85 season.

• For a complete historical list of all-Memphis starting fi ves in the program’s history, look at the box on page 7. (Credit to Memphis Tigers basketball historian and radio color analyst Matt Dillon)
