October is National Apple Month An apple a day keeps the doctor away!

To help recognize October as National Apple Month, we have decided to see just how many ways to put the “spice of life” back into one of our favorite fruits.

Also, keep a watch out for any National Food days that might pop up this month as well.

Please bring us your favorite family recipe for apples and together, we can make October the best Apple month yet!

Stay tuned to see all the delicious dishes on our menu here at Oak Wood Place!

Thank you, Chef Alan and the Culinary Team

Did You Know?

Jack o’ Lanterns originated in Ireland where people placed

candles in hollowed-out turnips to keep away spirits and ghosts on

the Samhain holiday.

Tootsie Rolls were the first wrapped penny candy in America.

Halloween candy sales average about 2 billion dollars annually in

the United States.

Bobbing for apples is thought to have originated from the Roman

harvest festival that honors Pamona, the goddess of fruit

trees.

Halloween is the 2nd most commercially successful holiday,

with Christmas being the first.

The common little brown bat of North America has the longest life span for a mammal its size, with a

life span averaging 32 years.

Chocolate candy bars top the list as the most popular candy for

trick-or-treaters, with Snickers #1.

Pumpkins also come in white, blue and green. Great for unique

monster carvings!

Health TipThis October we are proud to recognize National Breast Cancer Awareness Month by asking our residents to wear something pink every Friday this month.

Breast cancer is the second most common kind of cancer in women. About 1 in 8 women born today in the United States will get breast cancer at some point.

The good news is that many women can survive breast cancer if it’s found and treated early.

Talk to a doctor about your risk for breast cancer, especially if a close family member of yours has had breast or ovarian cancer. Your doctor can help you decide when and how often to get mammograms.

Hearing ProblemsAn elderly man was having hearing problems and went to see a specialist. The doctor fitted him with some hearing aids that brought his hearing back to full strength.

After a few weeks the man came back to make sure the new equipment was working properly, which it was.The hearing specialist said, “It all seems perfect. Your family should be delighted you can hear everything now.”

“Oh no,” the man responded. “I haven’t told any of them. I just sit quietly, listening carefully. I’ve changed my will four times.”
