Unfortunately, turning the page in our datebook isn’t quite as effective a way to find a fresh start as is the snow in erasing the dust and debris of the world. In a similar fashion, as we awaken on the day after New Year’s Day, old patterns and unhealthy habits start to reemerge as we far too quickly return to well established, for good or bad, daily routines. I for one am thankful that I haven’t been left to my own devices, that I am not expected to pull myself up by my own bootstraps! No, neither I nor any of us are required to go it alone and do it all by ourselves. Rather, we have been given another chance, a fresh start, a new beginning, each and every day, from the one in whom and through whom all things begin and end. Remember this day, every day, that it is in God that we live and move and have our being 1 , that because of Jesus Christ that we have newness of life 2 , that we have been given a new life of the spirit 3 to live with the Lord now, and for eternity. Pastor’s Epistle

Create in me a clean heart, O God, and put a new and right spirit within me.

Psalm 51:10 So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation:

everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new! 2 Corinthians 5:17

As I sit to write this month’s pastor’s epistle, the last flakes of our first winter snow storm are about to finish blanketing the ground in their usual beautiful fashion. The view from any window of our home is peaceful and serene. Since the sunrise is still a short while away, the only illumination is from the scattered street lights that dot the development. Once again, as is often the case, the freshly fallen snow has transported the world outside from its usual hectic and messy self to a place of clean and calm contemplation.

The scene outside makes me think of the recent New Year’s celebrations, the holiday of a mere changing of the calendar

that evokes our innermost desire to somehow, in some way, start over. No matter who we are or what our life experiences have been, when we look back over the life that we’ve lived, there is usually a handful or bucket load of decisions we’d gladly make differently about the path’s we’ve could have, and in some cases should have, taken.

Unfortunately, turning the page in our datebook isn’t quite as effective a way to find a fresh start as is the snow in

erasing the dust and debris of the world. Before you know it, the beautiful brightness of blanketed snow banks soon gets trodden upon and muddied up with the passage of people going about their daily business. In a similar fashion, as we awaken on the day after New Year’s Day, old patterns and unhealthy habits start to reemerge as we far too quickly return to well established, for good or bad, daily routines.

I for one am thankful that I haven’t been left to my own devices, that I am not expected to pull myself up by my own

bootstraps! No, neither I nor any of us are required to go it alone and do it all by ourselves. Rather, we have been given another chance, a fresh start, a new beginning, each and every day, from the one in whom and through whom all things begin and end. Remember this day, every day, that it is in God that we live and move and have our being1, that because of Jesus Christ that we have newness of life2, that we have been given a new life of the spirit3 to live with the Lord now, and for eternity.

Blessings, Pastor Justin
