The park's vegetation has changed from a dominant composition of forest to savannah.

While this marks a radical shift from the past 50 years, it is beginning to reset to forms more like to what would have been seen at the time of the Karankawa: a landscape that is more resilient to climatic conditions and more hospitable to more diverse fauna.

Harris County Metropolitan Transit Authority is currently reconfiguring bus routes to serve as a grid-based system. Their goal is to create easier point-to-point access between all parts of the city. Many lines will have increased frequencies, and weekend service will be as frequent as weekday service. One of the cities largest hubs--the Northwest Transit Center--will be less than a mile north of the NW entrance at Memorial Drive.
