The Decatur-Macon County Employer Directory represents a major publishing effort to provide a comprehensive listing of Decatur and Macon County manufacturers, service and support businesses. Included also is a section listing the companies by industrial group (North American Industry Classification).

ARRANGEMENT OF DATA

The directory has been designed to provide easy access for the different types of businesses. Company listings are provided in a straight alphabetical sequence by business name. The listing includes addresses, telephone numbers, contact names and titles with a brief description of the company’s products/services. The Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) codes, North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) codes, distribution of products/services, number of employees and year of establishment are provided when available. It is arranged in three sections. A Top Ten list is included at the beginning of each section.

Manufacturers (page 5) – Companies listed in this section manufacture products. Service Industries (page 25) – Companies listed in this section provide a non-manufacturing service, support or are part of the transportation industry.

Office & Professional (page 53) - Companies listed in this section provide a service and/or support to businesses and the community. This section includes public sector entities, including local governments and schools as well as private businesses. North American Industry Classifications (page 75) – We are transitioning from the use of the old SIC codes to the accepted NAICS codes. This listing groups companies under the two digit North American Industry Classification Codes which are arranged in numerical order and provide a breakdown by a company’s line of business. Some companies may have multiple listings in this section depending on the various industrial activities in which the company is engaged.

NORTH AMERICAN INDUSTRY CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM The majority of the companies listed in the Directory show the North American Industry Classification System code number (NAICS) for the principle products manufactured or the major services furnished by the company in question. This system (NAICS, pronounced Nakes) was developed as the standard for use by Federal statistical agencies in classifying business establishments for the collection, analysis, and publication of statistical data related to the business economy of the U.S. NAICS was developed under the auspices of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), and adopted in 1997 to replace the old Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) system. It was also developed in cooperation with the statistical agencies of Canada and Mexico to establish a 3-country standard that allows for a high level of comparability in business statistics among the three countries. The uses of these codes are manifold; a primary application is to select those companies which are in a particular line of business toward which it is desired to direct a sales campaign. On the other side of the coin, use of SIC makes it possible to line up quickly and easily sources of supply for a particular product. EXPLANATION OF NAICS The first two digits of the NAICS number show the major industrial group into which the company is classified. These two digit divisions are further broken down into six digit subsectors to allow for more flexibility and detail.
