In lieu of my personal presence at the September 5 Health Sciences Committee, I am providing this written summary of recent activities and developments affecting UNSOM. I will follow the usual outline format of past meetings, an updated version of which is attached. Las Vegas Major developments in Las Vegas include:

Official opening of the new Patient Care Center in Henderson, Early development of a full partnership with MountainView Hospital which will lead to

several new residency programs to start as early as 2016, The formal appointment of the UNSOM Dean as an ex officio member of the UMC

Governing Board (along with Dr. Atkinson, the UNLV Planning Dean), Development of a collaborative approach between UNSOM, UNLV and UMC to a

strategic focus for residency and fellowship training that matches UMC expertise with resources,

Launch of two new fellowships (cardiology and GI) on July 1, 2014, and Planning for new programs in pulmonary/critical care and orthopaedic surgery in July

2015. Reno Major developments in Reno include:

The formation of a standing executive committee composed of Renown Health and UNSOM leaders to manage the newly-formed partnership and serve as a clearinghouse for a wide range of operational ventures between the two institutions,

Preliminary work in developing an affiliation agreement with Renown Health which describes the nature and scope of a formal partnership,

Early exploration of the clinical integration of the Department of Pediatrics with Renown Children’s Hospital,

Agreement on a job description, funding model, recruitment strategy, and search committee for a Chair of the Department of Pediatrics who will also serve as Pediatrician-in-Chief of Renown Children’s Hospital,

Exploration of potential philanthropic support for the combined Pediatrician-in-Chief/Department Chair position described above,

Early plans to develop a new residency program in Neurology, Development of plans for funding and launching a new Office of Community Physician

Faculty Engagement to support all administrative needs for volunteer community physician teachers,

Continued development of plans for a family medicine residency program at St. Mary’s Hospital,

Exploration of a new family medicine residency program at Carson-Tahoe Hospital, and Development of a pilot project to care for high-intensity, complex PEBP patients with a

patient-centered medical home team of health professionals supported by a substantial case management fee.

Statewide Major developments statewide include:

Continued discussion of the implications of the Statewide Steering Committee and BOR directives regarding the long-term vision for UNSOM as a Reno and UNR based school of medicine with continued GME partnerships and limited but critical medical student teaching capacity in Las Vegas,

First group of student to complete years 1 and 2 of the revised curriculum received particularly high scores on the first step of their license exam (USMLE),

Continued planning for a new 3rd year curriculum to be launched in July 2015, Continued launch of the new Practice Management and Clinical Electronic Medical

Record system, with the departments of Pediatrics and Obstetrics/Gynecology (in Las Vegas) to be brought on-line in September 2014,

Pilot implementation in several departments of new physician salary plans based on clinical and academic productivity,

Launch of a new rural family medicine residency program in Winnemucca with the first residents starting in Las Vegas in July 2014 and moving to Winnemucca in July 2015, and

Continued development of the application for a Physician Assistant program (described by Dr. Klass previously).
