IntroductionChristChurchCathedralistheCathedraloftheAn-glicanDiocese of British Columbia. The DiocesecoverstheareaofVancouverIslandandtheGulfIslands.TheCathedralisaboveallacommunityoffaiththathasacceptedthechallengeofprovidingapublicspiritualhomeforchurchandsocietyalike.While our beautiful building gives us visibility, italsocreatesasacredimperativetoprovideagath-ering place for people who value, support, andarecommittedtothethingsoftheSpirit–prayer,music, art, theworks ofmercy, the demands ofjustice, the settingof amoral compass, and thedeepeningoffaith,amongothers.TheFriendsoftheCathedralareinvitedbothtoidentifywiththewiderangeofministriesinwhichChristChurchCa-thedralisengaged,andtoprovidetimelysupportfortheupkeepandenhancementofthebuildingsandgroundsthataretheplatformforsomuchofwhatwedo.
HistoryThe first Christ Church (1856–1869) dates to thetimeofFortVictoria,whichwasestablishedbytheHudson’sBayCompany in 1843.Thewoodenca-thedralburnedtothegroundin1869.ThesecondChrist Church (1872–1929) was another woodenstructure, which by the 1890s was deemed toosmallforthegrowingcongregation.
In1889anarchitecturalcompetitionwaslaunchedforthedesignofanewAnglicancathedralinVic-toria.Thedesignwasbroughttorealitybyoneofits creators, JohnCharlesMalcolmKeith,aScot-tish architect whomoved his practice from SanFranciscotoVictoriatocompletethework.
Lack of funds delayed the building of the newcathedral until 1923, when the cornerstone waslaidbytheLordBishopofLondon.WhenWinstonChurchillvisitedVictoriain1929,helaidastoneonthenorthtower.Therewereonlyenoughfundstobuildthenave,thenarthexandthelowerportions

The Friends of Christ Church Cathedral are agroupofpeoplewhovalueandactivelysupporttheCathedral,andwhorecognizeitsimportancetothespiritual,social,andculturallifeofVictoria.TheFriendsalsocherishtheheritagevalueoftheCathedral,andseektoensurethatitcanbeap-preciatedbyfuturegenerations.
What do the Friends do?
TheFriendsofChristChurchCathedralfulfillthreemainroles:
1. Theyareambassadorstothecom-munitytowidenbothsupportfortheCathedralandawarenessofitsimportancetothespiritual,social,andculturallifeofVictoria;
2. Theyraisefundstosupportthemaintenance,restoration,repair,con-servationandbeautificationoftheCathedral,itsgrounds,anditsculturalprograms;
3. Theyprovidetheirexpertise,skills,andnetworkstosupportspecialprojectsofChristChurchCathedral.
How do the Friends operate?
Working in consultationwith theDeanand theParishCouncil,theFriendssupportprojectsthatrequirespecialfundingabovenormaloperatingbudgets.Theseprojectsmay include, forexam-ple:
• Restorationworkonthebuilding• BeautificationoftheCathedral’s
landscaping• ExpansionofCathedralartsandmusic
of the northwest and southwest towers. ThesewereconsecratedinSeptember1929.
In 1936, a peal of eight bells for change-ringingwas installed in the northwest tower. The bells,madebyMears&StainbankofWhitechapel,Lon-don,areofthesamedesignasthepealatWest-minsterAbbey.
In1957thewesterntowerswerecompleted,andthearchovertherosewindowwasbuilt.Tosavecosts the towerswere built 12 feet shorter thanoriginallyspecified.
In the 1980s a stone-clad addition—containing achapel,ameetingroomandancillaryspaces—wasaddedtotheeastsideofthecathedral.
In2005,after10yearsoffundraising,aneworganwasadded.ItisthelargestorganeverbuiltbyHell-muthWolffandAssociatesofLaval,Quebecandhasbeenpraisedbyorganistsaroundtheworld.TheorganhasgreatlyenhancedthemusicallifeofboththeCathedralandthecityofVictoria.
Withanavemeasuring93feetby140feet,and122-foottowers,ChristChurchCathedralisoneofthelargestchurchesinCanada.
ChristChurchCathedralhasarichandfascinatinghistory.ItisabuildingofsignificantheritagevaluetothecityofVictoria, theprovinceofBritishCo-lumbia,andCanada.
