Happy easter everyone!

The first three and a half months of 2019 have just flown by, haven’t they?! The weather is finally beginning to cool down, and training and trialling for dog sports is in full swing. Over the past month, we’ve hosted trials for Dances with Dogs, Agility, Disc Dogs, and Trialling Obedience. The Flyballers have also been busy playing host at the Canberra Royal’s flyball competition.

The BDOC Committee has also been busy creating and debating policies, and we’re currently working on a “People Policy” to complement our Reactive Dog Policy. As our club is run entirely by volunteers, we feel that these policies are really important to keep volunteers and regular members safe and happy.

We were lucky enough to win some grant money from the ACT Government, and this money will be going towards improved lighting in the main paddock and the clubhouse, and also to improving our watering systems. A very big thank you to the members who spent time writing the grant submissions!

Another change that the Committee has made recently is to way membership fees are calculated. These changes will be effective immediately, so please have a read of our article in this newsletter for more information.

- Maelyn

SCRATCH OUR BACK!

BDOC is run exclusively by volunteers. We’re always on the lookout for more helpers!

Interested in volunteering? Skills we are looking for include administration, cleaning, grounds maintenance, information technology, weeding, events assistants, shed tidying, catering for events, class assistants, instructors and lots more. Volunteer as little or as much as you like and are able to. Every bit helps and you get the chance to make more ‘doggie’ friends. See the BDOC office if you would like to join our volunteer group.

REMINDER FROM THE BDOC COMMITTEE

The BDOC Committee would like to remind our members of the following club rules:

Unless attending a BDOC sanctioned event (such as a trial or workshop), all dogs which visit the BDOC grounds (including the carpark) must be registered and financial with the Club.

All members must supervise their dogs at all times, and are responsible for cleaning up after their dogs - please scoop that poop!

The Belconnen Dog Obedience Club (BDOC) was formed in 1975 to provide dog training instruction and facilities for people living in northern Canberra.

The Club’s main activity is our canine companion

classes, which teach basic obedience and valuable life skills to pet dogs and their families. Our canine companion classes are open to fully vaccinated dogs of all breeds.

We also offer training in dog sports including agility, dances with dogs, flyball, trialling obedience, and rally obedience, and have many teams ranging from beginners to the top trial and competition levels.

The aims of our Club include:• Having fun with our dogs• Promoting responsible dog ownership• Helping our members to become proficient dog

trainers in general obedience, and also in the dog sports of their choice

• Helping our members to develop enjoyable relationships with their dogs

• Promoting the pursuit of recognised dog sports

BDOC is supported with much appreciated financial assistance from ACT Sport and Recreation Services and the Department of Education and Training ACT.

Our Club is staffed and run by a terrific group of volunteers, from the Club’s Committee, office and shop workers, to our incredibly dedicated team of instructors.

If you have enjoyed your time at BDOC, please consider volunteering! We are always on the look out for helpers for our various trials and events, and we run training for new canine companion instructors twice a year in January and June. If you’re interested, please email the Club at [email protected].

MEMBERSHIP FEES UPDATEThe BDOC Committee would like to advise our existing members and potential members that the schedule for BDOC Membership Fees has been updated as of Thursday 18th April 2019.

The Joining Fee ($80) remains unchanged for new and re-joining members. The Membership Fee and the Activity Fee have been adjusted to ensure that they provide a fairer cost to members regardless of when they begin training at BDOC. These fees were previously charged either on a full year or half year basis and so members who joined in the later sessions in their fee bracket (Session 5 or Session 2) were receiving less weeks of classes than those who joined in the beginning of their fee bracket (Session 3 or Session 1). The Membership Fee and the Activity Fee will be dependent on when a member joins the club.

All BDOC memberships will now expire at the conclusion of Session 2 of the Canine Companion Class calendar. This usually occurs around June, and in 2019 the dates for Week 8 are Thursday 20th June and Sunday 23rd June. The new BDOC Membership Year shall commence in Week 1 of Session 3 of each year. Members must renew their membership before Week 4 of Session 3 of the Canine Companion Class calendar (Thursday 18th July and Sunday 21st July 2019), or they will be required to pay the Joining Fee again.

Members can expect to receive reminders about membership renewal via email around June and July. If your details have changed since last year, please send email us at [email protected] so that we can update your membership details accordingly.

Existing members who commence a new activity (such as starting a dog sport with an already financial dog, or adding classes for a new dog to their membership) partway through the BDOC Membership Year can expect to pay the Activity Fee on a pro rata basis, in a similar fashion to what new Canine Companion participants would be charged for starting classes at the same point in the BDOC Membership Year.

The below tables outline the new fee schedule. If you are a new or renewing member and you would like help figuring out how much your fees will be, please visit the Fee Calculator on our new website.

OBEDIENCE TRIAL REPORTReport written by Maelyn Draper

On Saturday 6th April, BDOC held the first of our two annual obedience trials for the year. We were blessed with mostly excellent weather, apart from a random shower or two. A very big thank you to our hardworking trial manager Elaine Temby, and her other helpers behind the scenes including Charlie Giles and Maelyn Draper.

Thanks also goes to our stewards on the day - Cheryl, Liz, Maelyn, Cathie, Lyndal, Christina, Natasha, Dorothy and Julie. If you are currently attending any of BDOC’s dog sport classes but aren’t ready to compete yet, please considering volunteering to steward at trials or competitions. It’s a really great way to see what happens in the ring without the pressure of being entered yourself, and you will learn a lot about your sport just from watching others compete in it. It may even give you the confidence to give competing a go for yourself sometime!

Congratulations to all the teams listed below that achieved qualifying scores!
