Manager’s Message

Winter’s greetings! We have been very lucky with the dry weather holding out in June so far but not for long by the looks of things. We have traded very well in June compared to last year which helps our year-end figures, we are hoping to return a good profit to the Club this year.

Thanks to all involved in our recent Pro-Am event, from our sponsors to our staff, our volunteers & of course, our members who took part in the event. A lot of work went into the organisation of the event and I am delighted that we had a full field on the day. I look forward to hosting more successful events at the Club.

We have been working on some promotional initiatives to try and trade better through the Winter months this year, details are below in the marketing section.

As previously communicated, the Board have decided that the Hospice Day fundraiser is now to take place on a bi-annual basis with the off year being used for a Club fundraiser. This year being an off year, we have pencilled in Friday 13th of October as the date for our club fundraiser with proceeds being used to upgrade our ablution facilities and part proceeds to go to a deserving charity. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Norm Wilhelm for his efforts so far in getting this great initiative off the ground.

We have now sold all the tickets for the Carpet fundraiser raffle with the draw due to take place on Wednesday 21st June. Thanks to all who have supported this cause and best of luck to everybody!

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the members, volunteers & the Board for all the support I have been given

over the first full financial year in my tenure here at the Club. It has been very challenging but very enjoyable at the same

time & I look forward to many more years here at the Club.

The Match play Singles competition is now finalized. Congratulations to the winners Michelle Keogh and Ned Dixon. Presentations will be made when Ned returns from his holiday.

The Pro Am was a great success with 34 teams in the event. Conditions on the day were perfect and 136 Pro’s and Members set out to compete for some great prizes and $’s for the Pro’s. All Pro’s were guaranteed at least $200 in prize money which was well received. The day was followed by a very tasty meal served in our Restaurant by Dale and Bree and Staff followed by Presentation.

Our heartfelt thanks go to our Major Sponsors, Urban Quarter, Whalers Cove and the Brierty Family who made it possible to once again hold this very special event. Our thanks also to Regency (Marg and Warren Dean) and Ez-go Carts (The Wilhelms) who offered Hole- In- One Prizes and Golf Box and Titleist for their donations. Hopefully this will continue to be a Major event on our calendar. Our thanks to all the Members who embraced the competition and made it so easy to fill all the teams.

Changes have been made for weekly Prize giving with Golf Balls being given for NTP’s and Gross. We have started an Eagles Nest and a ball each competition is added. If there are multiple eagles on a day, the balls will be shared. If you win a voucher it is your responsibility to pick it up from the Committee Member of the day doing cards. Prizes not collected will be kept for one month and then revert back to the club.

Thanks to all the Committee Members who give their time weekly to manage our events. Happy Golfing... Sandra Haunold –Captain

ETIQUETTE FOR PRESENTATIONS

It would be appreciated if as many competitors as possible remain for Presentations to honour the trophy winners and

the Sponsors.

Please arrange for someone to accept your trophy if you have to leave or if you have a good score please leave your phone number so we can contact you to return to accept your prize. It is very disappointing for a Sponsor and embarrassing for the

Committee if no one is there to accept their prize.

A Big thanks has to out to the ‘bunker boys’ who have put in a huge effort in installing herringbone drainage in the bunker on the lake side of the 5th Green. They are working in conjunction with the course committee & finance committee to design a plan to roll out drainage solutions for all bunkers throughout the course over the next couple of years. The work done last year on the 10th fairway, it having been deep cored, sanded & the addition of gypsum, will be tested over the next few weeks’ rains. All early indications show that it has improved significantly from last year. Thanks to Lyndsay Stephens, Adam Davies ( Sussex Turf) & Neil Thorpe for their efforts in this venture. Justin & the course committee are also looking at putting additional drainage on some of the worst rain affected fairways over the Winter to improve playability over the wetter months this year & into the future. This work will be undertaken in a stage by stage manner as budgetary constraints mean we cannot do all works in one go. The finance committee is investigating the viability of getting verti cutting heads for our mowers and the purchase of a blower to assist in regularly maintaining thatch build up in our fairways thus avoiding the need to contract major verti cutting in the future.

Water Committee We are currently enjoying the rain filling our lakes and look forward to having the system at capacity again shortly. The Water Corporation works adjacent to the 18th green are scheduled to be completed by the end of August and we are hopeful they will plant a water-wise garden in the areas affected by their works once completed. This should add to the aesthetics of our finishing hole and the course as a whole.

The marketing team is finalising our new website and we hope to go live shortly, thanks to Bob Rose & the team for his efforts. A big thanks to Mike Fisher who has been invaluable in the design & management of our current website over the years. We hope Mike will remain involved with the new version!

We have launched a very attractive Winter Special and advertised it on the website & Facebook with some good initial results so far. We are looking at placing a monthly advertisement in the local papers over the Winter to further promote the deal. We look forward to analysing the data after the Winter to judge its success!

We are sourcing some additional banners to be placed at the junction of Caves Road & Clubhouse Drive to advertise the tavern &

restaurant and its delicious offerings. We have also finalised design of a new flyer for the restaurant and hope to get them delivered to

houses in the greater Dunsborough lakes area in the next few weeks to assist with trade over the Winter period. If there are any

members who are willing to assist in the letter drop, please come and see Paul in the office. As always, your assistance in this matter is

greatly appreciated.

Dunsborough Lakes Pro Am Report

A full field of 136 players, including 34 professionals, took to the course on Thursday 1st June for the Urban Quarter/Whalers Cove Dunsborough Lakes Golf Club Pro-Am. Fast perfect greens and strong winds tested the players but they did not affect Melbourne based Matt Jager who shot a six-under 66 to win by two over Christopher Mueck. ”I love this place, we spent a lot of time down here when I was young as a family and…it’s always great to get back down here when I can,” Jager said. “The golf course was in great shape, credit to the green staff but most of all PGA Life Member Len Thomas and his wife Sally for making this event possible,” he added.

WA local Gavin Reed was third on three-under par and only a further eight players in the field broke par on the day. Club Man-ager Paul Devaney said the event was a great success. “The winning score of 66 was a highlight and although not a course rec-ord, considering the wind combined with some tricky pin positions it was a great score on the day.”

The professionals played for a gross score, but also competed alongside three amateur partners in an adapted version of Canadi-an Foursomes. As was the case at last year’s Pro Am, being paired with the leading professional was the key to success. Sally Thomas, Val Pullan and Maureen Hughes were the fortunate ones to play alongside Jager to finish top on 139 points; and in the process turned their team name If Only into an irony. In a closely fought contest the top five teams finished within three points of each other and the ladies’ scraped home by a point past the Brothers-In-Arms (Paul Kilgren, Andrew Collis, and Chris Hol-man) as Pullan calmly stroked home a birdie on their final hole after Hughes claimed the nearest the pin prize.

After the game all the players enjoyed the hospitality provided in the Clubhouse by Bree and Dale Wiley and their staff. Could we be celebrating Pro-Am of the year 2017?

"Funny now - but not at the time"

A member showed such great interest in the new EZGO Lithium Golf Car at the recent Pro-Am - that he decided at 11 pm to take it home.

This person who shall remain un-named for the present, runs a BackPacker.

It is reliably reported, that after a lake search by those still left and upon returning to the Tavern - that only 1 golf car still remained in the carpark.

So, with those still upstanding and applying to become Donald Trump's new FBI director, it was able to be worked out who was the responsible party.

We are also reliably informed that our Manager, Paul Devaney, who was still "sort of on duty" at the time - was of no help in the search.

It is believed, an even funnier side, was that this member (who always left his house keys in the glovebox) was seen trying to gain entry into his house in his fine state.

As with all good stories - it ended well. Andy now speaks highly as to the performance of the new

Lithium car.

Competition Report 31st May—3rd June

In a busy week, an additional three Club competitions were held. On Wednesday Chairman Craig Costello (43 points) and Captain Sandra Haunold (40 points) took the honours in a Stableford contest. After a rollercoaster opening; Costello stumbled onto some consistent form by posting one-over and 24 points for his second nine to win by three over Steve Kristensen, Gavin Howlett and Graham Hudson. Haunold won

by a point over Linda Jenkins thanks to four pars in her final five holes. In Saturday’s stroke competition, Cy Edwards posted a run of eleven pars and birdie from the 11th to the 4th to finish on 76, and a nett 69, to win on countback over Lyndsay Baxter. There was no luck for the 13 ladies who competed as none finished under par. Janice Johnston (nett 73) prevailed on countback over Sally Thomas after a three-shot swing on the 18th hole in her favour. For Monday’s Stableford contest, visitor Christopher McMullan (42) reigned over Allan Kay (40) after steaming through his second nine in level par and 24 points. Alison Fear (38) claimed victory over Pam Hughes (37) after picking up 13 points over her final five holes.

Competition Report 7th—10th June

Dunsborough Lakes Golf Club held two closely fought Stableford competitions recently. On Wednesday, after a fallow period of scoring in ladies’ competitions, seven ladies bettered their handicap to take the limelight from the men. Sponsor Sally Chandler (40 points) was in-spired by her late husband Tony on his Memorial Day with a solid consistent performance that only contained one blemish on the ninth. Chandler dug in on the back nine and held off challengers Alison Fear and Michele Keogh (both 39 points) who pushed her to the end on the course. In a tight contest four ladies were only a point further back. In the men’s contest Gary Cox (40 points) took advantage of a late capit-ulation by John Edwards to win by a point. Needing only four points from his final three holes; Edwards fell one short to mar what was an otherwise excellent game. Only three other men could better their handicap on the day.

On Saturday, Russell McKay (42 points) returned from his travels over east and turned in a sparkling performance through the back nine to pip Nick Ritchie (41) to the top prize. After sixteen holes both men were on 38 points; with Ritchie one-under the stick. But Ritchie scarred his card after wiping his penultimate hole and gave McKay the luxury of needing only a point on the last for the title; which he duly took. Frank Horwood matched Ritchie’s five birdies but finished two points further back alongside Earl Baker. In the ladies’ contest Sandra Haunold (44 points) continued her rich vein of form after picking up 11 pars on the course. Pam Hughes (42 points) was eight points behind with five holes left to play; but she hauled in the leader and both ladies were on 41 points coming to the last. However, a triple-bogey saw her challenge fall short after Haunold parred it.

Competition Report 14th—17th June

A smaller field of 91 players registered for Dunsborough Lakes Golf Club stroke competition last Wednesday on a course softened by 30mm of overnight rain. In the Men’s contest, Geoff Trevenen signed off an excellent round of nett 66 from his 29 handicap to take the victory. After a quadruple bogey on his 12th hole brought him back level with Sandro Gilomen (nett 68); Trevenen recovered to finish his final six holes three-under to win by two. Six players finished tied a further two shots back. Of these six; Frank Horwood produced the stand out performance after recovering from four-over par after seven to play the rest of his round one-under and finish with a gross score of 75. In the Ladies’ con-test only Pip Girdler (nett 70) bettered her handicap on the day to finish three clear of Ann Linaker and Pam Hughes. Girdler recovered from a mini collapse around the turn; posting three pars in her final six holes to finish comfortably clear of her competitors.

On Saturday, fine conditions attracted a large field of 72 players in a Stableford contest. Jason Beste (42 points) finished four clear of Jamie Ellis, Matthew Hynynen and Gerry Keogh after a positive second nine that included four pars from his 24 handicap. Of the three challengers,

Ellis will perhaps rue a missed opportunity after sitting comfortably on 24 points after nine holes; and five clear of Beste. But two wiped holes in his last four ultimately cost him the top prize. In the Ladies’ contest, Val Pullan (39 points) followed in Girdler’s footsteps as the sole player to better her handicap on the day. Viv Allan (36 points) was her main competitor and both ladies sat on the same score coming to the final hole after Allan had clawed back a two-point deficit. But Pullan made par to take the victory as Allan wiped it.

Competition Report 24th— 27th May

Dunsborough Lakes Golf Club Members’ clearly know who best to pair with; as 37 of the 56 teams who competed in a two-man Ambrose event finished under par on Wednesday. Only half a point separated the top three teams, with Frank Horwood and John Carrico tearing up the course together with a gross 69 and nett 63¼. An eagle on the par-five 8th sparked their game to life and was followed by birdies on the 10th, 13th and 15th to help them win by the narrowest of margins. Runner-up on nett 63½ were Graham Hudson and Milton Sceney who to-gether posted a commanding fifteen pars and a birdie for a gross 73 off a 27 and 11 handicap respectively. Alison and David Fear finished third on 63¾ points; with four bogeys on the back nine ultimately slowing the momentum in their push for the top prize.

On Saturday 43 men and 16 ladies competed in a Par competition. Visitor Richard Michel (13 handicap) must have thought he was dream-ing as he sat on three-under par off the stick, and +7, after ten holes. He couldn’t sustain that level of performance; but a plus point on his penultimate hole lifted him back to +6, and victory on the course. For the third game running Graham Hudson played bridesmaid as both he and Michael Priest finished on +5; neither pushing on after an excellent opening nine of +4. Nick Ritchie was sitting on two-under and +5 after ten holes; but he also slipped back to finish on +3 alongside Glenn Carter, Brett House, and Jim Holroyd. In the ladies’ competition; scoring was not so easy going. Despite wiping her first and last holes; Sue Reynolds produced an otherwise steady +2 round that saw her win by one over Chris Marshall, Sally Chandler, and Vicki Haunold.

Reminder:

We are looking to make a central collection of our Club history.

Do you have:

any information/photos of the development of the course?

further information of the development of the club to add to that in our Foundation Fix-ture book?

photos of any past Presidents, Captains or Club Champions, pennant teams etc?

some great anecdotes we could collect?

ideas of other information we should collect?

Where possible, we would like the information elec-tronically (in a word document or scanned photos). Please hand any suggestions to the staff in the pro-shop or email to Paul Devaney.

A guy on vacation finishes his round, goes into the club-

house. The head pro says, "Did you have a good time out

there?"

The man replied "Fabulous, thank you."

"You're welcome," said the pro. "How did you find the

greens?"

Said the man: "Easy. I just walked to the end of the fair-

ways and there they were!"

Four retired men play golf together once a week

for many years. One day on 16th hole that runs

along side the highway, a funeral procession

drives by. One man says to the others, "Stop

and remove your hats, show some respect."

Afterward, one of the other men asked him

what got into him. "I have never seen you show

anybody any respect."

The first man replied: "I was married to her for

65 years."
