If any other members arrive at the same decision I'm sure our CMSG membership would be a good place to look for a buyer. Keep it in mind just in case. QUESTIONNAIRE SUGGESTIONS - The survey brought up some good ideas including the following:1(1) a question and answer section - good idea; the Editor will try to research any short questions or steer enquiries to the experts; (2) More information on meter machines, towns, issues and varieties;(3) reprint more obscure references - what do you want to see?(4) lists for shorter types by number and town and user - the Editor thought Type I would be easy but now has over 300 entries with 2-3 for specific meter numbers. A good idea - does anyone have a list in the works for any given meter type that the rest of us could contribute to finishing? (5) A document with final town lists for types 1-10 - yep, in prepara- tion the Editor will distribute it when its typed up:"CMSG Misc. Publication No.1" or some such titled series. ODDS AND ENDS - 'Nilf Whitehouse would like some help with Bell Telephone Patriotic cachets. These were in use in both Montreal and Toronto. Toronto dates range from Sept to Dec 1941 while Montreal dates start in June-Dec 1941. Anyone with examples during or before the war period might contact Will' with photo- copies to assist in a compilation. also sent along a few early slogans and notes that Hasler meters starting with H2000700 can be found small letters in Postes, Postage and the meter number. (illustrated below). Similar US Hasler apparently have seen overall reduction in indicia size becasuse many users had complained of run-over of the impression onto windows of commercial envelopes. Perhaps the same problem existed here in Canada.

Marcel Cool of Chateauguay,Quebec is coolecting(oops not another typo!!) Quebec meters by town and meter number. He would like help and provides a short list for his home type and invites additions. Marcel noted also that my reference in Newsletter No. 12 to retreat-ing into the"cool basement"could have meant a bunch of CWiSG members arriving at his door which he thought would have been most enjoyable. THE USE OF POSTAGE METERS IN CANADA IN 1933

Ross W. Irwin

By 1933 postage meters had been in use in Canada for a decade. The Pitney . Model M postage meter first appeared in 1923 and was foll- owed by the Universal Postal Frankers Midget meter in 1926 and the Pitney Bowes Model H meter in 1929.

There were approximately 400 postage meters in each of the above series available for use. However, by 1933 only the Pitney Bowes Model H was marketted, the others being obsolescent and on a planned program of with-drawal.

Acceptance of postage meters had not advanced rapidly. Total revenue from this source was about $2 million, or 10 percent of total postage revenue. The sales distribution system was still inadequate. Distribution was in 6 towns in Nova Scotia, 5 in New Brunswick, 7 in Quebec, 21 in Ontario, 4 in Manitoba, 2 in Saskatchewan, 3 in Alberta and 3 in British Columbia. A total of 51 meter towns.

Major reasons for the concentration of postage meters in larger centres were the market potential, and Post Office regulations required that each postage meter be serviced regularly. The postage meter companies found it expensive to place and service postage meters in the smaller towns off the main railway lines.

As of January 31, 1933, there were 702 postage meters in use in Canada. These were distrihuted: Pitney Bowes. Model M - 186; Midget(3) - 190; Midget (5) - 3; Pitney Bowes H5 - 322 and Pitney Bowes Model HS - 1.

Following is a listing of every postage meter in use in each town, together with the name of the user, and the accumulated number of impressions on each postage meter. The information is of use as a guide to the potential scarcity of a certain meter variety.

For example: Type Meter

Number User Town Total

Impressions

3.2.5 689 James Morrison

3.2.3 671 City of Regina

3.2.2 798 Hudon & Orsale

3.3.4 634 Victor Talking Machines 5.1.1 40140 Anglo FRench Drug Co

Toronto 79,220 Regina 120,490 Montreal 280,050 Montreal 556,360 Montreal 125,780

The numbers are a guide as they represent all denominations on the meter and the location of hoards influence the numbers as well.
