Welcome to our Professional Development Program for summer term 2015. As doctoral candi-date or postdoc of one of our member programs you gain access to our workshops according to your program regulations. If you are a doctoral candidate or postdoc of Freie Universität, or any other university, but not member of Dahlem Research School, you are also very welcome to register.

Whether you choose to take part in one of our transferable skills trainings, our career deve-lopment workshops, or any other of our offerings, the Professional Development Program is designed to support you in any aspect of your career that goes beyond the core activities of your individual research areas. Our program will provide you with the tools necessary

• to succeed in your dissertation project,• to enhance key competencies and maximize your potential,• to prepare for a career in industry, academia or the public sector.

Dahlem Research School encompasses 27 outstanding structured doctoral programs at Freie Universität Berlin. With currently about 900 doctoral candidates, a third of whom come from abroad, DRS fosters transdisciplinary research in an international context. This gives you the chance to get to know your peers from different disciplines. We strongly encourage you to take advantage of these opportunities to expand your horizons!

coNDitioNS of PaRticiPatioN

The Professional Development Program is open to the fol-lowing target groups. Available spaces are first given to mem-bers of priority group 1 and then to those of priority group 2 and 3:

Priority group 1• Doctoral candidates and postdocs of DRS doctoral pro-

grams• Postdocs of the DRS fellowship lines HONORS, POINT

and COFUND.

Priority group 2• Doctoral candidates and postdocs of Freie Universität

who are not members of DRS doctoral programs

Priority group 3• Doctoral candidates and postdocs of other universities

Each course description provides information about the targeted subject area, skill level and the format of the course. Use these in-dicators to find courses that are appropriate for your educational objectives and developmental needs.

1. Course Is Related To Your Subject Area: Please note that some workshops are specifically designed for participants of certain sub-ject areas, e.g. the natural and life sciences.

2. Course Format Meets Your Needs: The majority of our workshops are trainings. For some topics you can avail yourself of additional coaching sessions and open door talks.

3. Course Matches Your Skill Level: Does the course advance your level of skill and meet your particular professional needs? For each course you will see a scale with four circles, symbolizing from left to right the 1st, 2nd and 3rd year of the doctorate. Courses for postdocs are marked by the fourth circle. From the following ex-amples you can see which courses target which levels:

Registration opens online approximately three weeks before the se-mester begins. In order to register for a course, please click on the course link and complete the online registration form, which you will find at the bottom of the course page.

You will receive an email confirmation once your booking is pro-cessed. If the course is full, your name will be added to the waiting list and you will be notified via email as soon as a place becomes available. If you belong to priority groups 2 or 3, you may be placed on the waiting list until registrations from members of priority group 1 have been processed.

3. How Do i Register for courses?

CANCELLATION POLICy

1. If you are unable to attend a course you have booked, you must request withdrawal at the latest 21 days prior to the course via email to [email protected].

2. For cancellations we receive later than 21 days before the beginning of the course, you/your doctoral program will be charged with 100% of the course fee. The num-ber of course days you are entitled to book by your program will be reduced accor-dingly.

3. For cancellations received at the latest 21 days before the beginning of the course, you/your doctoral program will not be charged. The number of course days that you are entitled to book by your program will not be reduced or your course fee will be refunded.

4. Cancellations due to illness are only acceptable on production of a valid medical certificate which you must send by mail or email within one week after the course. In this case you/your doctoral program will not be charged. The number of course days that you are entitled to book will not be reduced or your course fee will be refunded.

5. How Many courses can i Register for?

Our Professional Development Program consists of high-quality courses taught by expert trainers and coaches. The Dahlem Re-search School therefore asks for a contribution of € 100 per par-ticipant per course day. For members of priority group 1 the DRS doctoral programs of Freie Universität Berlin often cover this con-tribution.

If there is no funding available, you have to pay for your courses yourself. In this case, we can only accept your registration if we receive full payment before the start of the course via bank transfer. You will be first put on the waiting list and asked to transfer the course fee. You will receive the confirmation for participation after we have received your payment.

If there is funding available for you, the number of courses you can register for may be limited by your doctoral program. Please con-tact your program coordinator to find out how many course days you are entitled to book, before you register online. If you want to exceed the designated number of course days, you can ask your program for further financing or pay the fee yourself.

If there is no funding available for you, you may also register for courses, but you will have to pay the course fee yourself. There is no limit to the number of courses you may register for.

Please Note! Ask your doctoral program, your department or your

supervisor if there is funding available for your course participation.

6. DRS Doctoral can-didates: How Will My attendance be accre-

dited?

7. What Happens to My Data?

Dahlem Research School offers and administers its interdiscipli-nary course program but does NOT award credits for the courses. Each doctoral program has its own rules on awarding ECTS credits for courses taken at DRS.

Individual training records are made available by Dahlem Research School to each program coordinator at the end of each semester.

After you have completed your doctoral studies your program coor-dinator will issue to you a transcript of records including all courses taken as part of the curriculum of your doctoral program. Please note that you will not receive a separate certificate for each course.

Participants' data is stored in a database at Dahlem Research School (DRS) for the purpose of recording attendance at workshops, pro-viding statistical information and maintaining training records.

At regular intervals, individual training records are made available to the institution which is funding your place in the course pro-gram. This is your doctoral program, and in some cases your de-partment ("Fachbereich").

Non-personal data is used as the basis for our internal quality ma-nagement and control. It is our goal to continuously improve and develop our services.

Knowledge and competence in your field of research are vital foun-dations for a successful doctorate. Equally important is a range of key competencies that are crucial not only for your academic devel-opment, but also in other professional contexts: Communicating adequately in different settings, organizing yourself and your work and mastering IT are examples of this. The fact that only a maxi-mum of 1 out of 10 doctoral researchers continue their career in academia highlights the need for a varied skill set even more.

Management Competency courses give you the opportunity to ac-quire and improve additional skills that complement your academic performance and prepare you to take on responsible positions in your future career. You will find workshops focusing on a range of IT tools, support for motivating and organizing yourself, as well as strategies for improving your networking skills.

Each career requires individual planning. Our program provides you with courses that support you along the way, from exploring your options and choosing a career path to applying for jobs. Other offerings give you a chance to gain new perspectives by, e.g. getting acquainted with the basics of economics.

TRAINING – COACHING – MENTORING

Within our Professional Development Program you can choose be-tween different educational formats depending on your needs and career goals.

Training sessions constitute the major part of our program. In one to two-day highly interactive workshops our experienced trainers instruct you in achieving expertise and mastering new skills in var-ious fields, for instance about the best way to present yourself and your research results, teach at university level or organize your time.

Coaching in small groups aims at developing your awareness and the power to reflect on your existing skills and knowledge and help-ing you to find the best way to enhance your performance. Our qualified coaches guide you in finding, trying and evaluating ef-fective motivation strategies for completing your doctoral studies or in determining your professional potential in order to devise a suitable career strategy.

Mentoring aims to support female doctoral candidates in explor-ing and pursuing their career options. It brings them together with experienced professional mentors who offer guidance, encourage-ment and support. Mentors and mentees meet regularly through-out a one-year program and participate in specially designed work-shops, coachings and networking events.

OPEN DOOR TALKS

Open Door Talks is a lecture series addressing all students, doctor-al candidates and postdocs. Experts from different occupational fields share their individual experiences and discuss with you how to make the right career move. Other Open Door Talks deal with funding opportunities for research stays abroad or postdoctoral projects.

Our mission is to constantly improve our Professional Devel-opment Program and to enhance the quality of our doctoral candidates' learning and development.

• Trainers and coaches are recruited and selected on the basis of their professional experience and outstanding qualifications.

• The course program is regularly reviewed and revised to meet the current needs and profiles of the course participants.

• Course assessment ensures the evaluator’s anonymity.• The results of course assessments are compared to

One of the core responsibilities of Dahlem Research School is to promote research integrity as the basis of all academic work. From the very beginning of your doctorate we support you in obtaining strategies and gaining confidence in conducting and presenting your research according to the standards of good scientific practice.

Since winter term 2014/15, we are closely cooperating with Hum-boldt Graduate School (HGS), Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, and Potsdam Graduate School (PoGS), Universität Potsdam. This coope-ration allows us to expand and vary our offers and tailor them to specific disciplines.

WHat iS gooD ScieNtific PRactice?

Good Scientific Practice is an attitude of mind that becomes an at-titude to work. It is about the way in which research is planned and conducted, the results are recorded and reported, and the fruits of research are disseminated, applied and exploited. It allows ready verifications of the quality and integrity of data, transparent basis for the investigation of allegations.

The two-hour introductory course provides an overview of the ran-ge of areas in which young scientists can come into contact with the subject. The goal should be to develop a sense of what "Good Scientific Practice" is.

Our joint key courses will introduce you to the main principles of research integrity in your field, i.e. conducting and communicating your research honestly and openly, employing reliable and accounta-ble methods and being fair towards your colleagues and their work.

Jede/Jeder will sie, alle glauben sie zu erfüllen: Aber was ist eigent-lich gute wissenschaftliche Praxis? Ausgehend von einer Nominal-definition wollen wir in diesem Workshop zügig zur Anwendung voranschreiten. Was genau bedeutet zum Beispiel das Urheberrecht für meine Forschungsarbeit? Was bedeutet es für die neuen und al-ten Publikationsformen, für die Vergabe von Nutzungsrechten und für die Frage, wer als Mitautor eines Textes gelten darf? Am zweiten Workshoptag konzentrieren wir uns auf die Nutzung von Quellen für unseren eigenen Text, schreiben Paraphrasen von fremden Tex-ten, werten einige Plagiatsfälle aus und diskutieren über Sinn und Unsinn von Plagiatssoftware. • Publizieren: Einführung in das Urheberrecht; Nutzungsrechte

Methods

Preparation

To help the students develop a good sense of judgment about con-ducting their scientific work, with both high professional and ethi-cal standards.

The first part will involve instruction on matters of procedure in do-ing and recording scientific work, to ensure that the work is reliable. The second part will deal with all sorts of situations that raise ethical issues in the doing and publication of scientific work.

There will be two short lectures, with Power Point presentations and some assigned reading (before the workshop starts and during it), but the main mode of teaching will involve discussion of issues, both between pairs of students and by the group as a whole.

The preparation will involve reading one assigned article in advance

and bringing two problems or situations to discuss, one bearing on

scientific procedure, the other on ethics.

Sie wer-den für eventuell auftretende Konfliktbereiche sensibilisiert und erwerben Kompetenzen, um im Forschungsalltag angemessene Entscheidungen dazu treffen zu können. „Publish or perish“ – so lautet eine Grundregel des Wissenschaftsbetriebs, die zunehmend auch schon in der Promotionsphase gilt. Um hier zu bestehen, ist eine professionelle Haltung zum Schreiben unbedingt notwendig. In diesem Workshop werden die notwendigen Kenntnisse und Fertigkeiten für einen produktiven Schreibprozess vermittelt. Durch diagnostische Übungen zu den unterschiedlichen Phasen des Schreibprozesses reflektieren die TeilnehmerInnen ihr Schreibverhalten, um es zu optimieren und bewusster steuern zu können. Sie erhalten Hintergrundwissen aus der Schreibforschung und erproben in praktischen Übungen verschiedene Schreib- und Arbeitstechniken, um ihr eigenes Repertoire zu erweitern.

The focus of the workshop will be:• implementing verbal and non-verbal presentation strategies

effectively, • communicating complex contents, and • taking questions, also difficult ones, in the follow-up

After the workshop, participants have a clear, realistic impression about their individual strengths and about aspects they should work on to become more successful.

In this workshop, good presentation skills are assumed and the par-ticipants are to bring a prepared (PowerPoint) talk to give in front of their peers. An explanation of presentation criteria creates the foundation for the workshop. The greatest benefit then comes with direct feedback from the participants and trainer who base their evaluations on the presentation criteria, which include among others: good vocal technique, addressing broader audiences, and strong take-home messages. All presentations are followed by a discussion to create the realistic scenario of a conference talk. Also, difficult situations that can occur during discussions and how to master them professionally, will be addressed.

Feedback is based on the 12-Parameter Model which was designed by textATRIUM specifically for evaluating academic presentations.

Egal ob bei der Präsentation eines Papers auf einer Konferenz, bei einer Podiumsdiskussion oder in der täglichen Zusammenarbeit mit Kollegen: um erfolgreich zu kommunizieren, braucht es rhe-torisches Geschick. Während der Promotion gibt es zahlreiche Gründe für forschungs-bedingte Aufenthalte im Ausland. Vorträge auf internationalen Konferenzen, die Teilnahme an Sprach- und Sommerkursen oder längere Forschungsaufenthalte an renommierten Universitäten in Europa und Übersee sind in vielen Fachrichtungen ein Muss, in jedem Fall aber ein Plus im akademischen Lebenslauf.

Finanzielle und z.T. auch organisatorische Unterstützung dieser Aufenthalte bieten verschiedene Förderprogramme und -organisa-tionen. Da unterschiedliche Bedingungen und Fristen gelten, sollte man sich jedoch frühzeitig über die verschiedenen Möglichkeiten informieren.

ReferentInnen der Abteilung Außenangelegenheiten geben einen Überblick über die verschiedenen Programme, die jeweiligen Be-werbungsvoraussetzungen und AnsprechpartnerInnen an der Frei-en Universität.

The goals of this introductory class to business administration are three-fold: First, the participants shall acquire a basic knowledge of selected key areas of business administration (i.e. business models, strategic management, decision theory, financial accounting and managerial accounting). Second, they shall understand how these areas are not isolated but intimately connected to each other. Third, they shall acquire an understanding of how this basic knowledge of business administration can be applied to specific real-world set-tings. Acquiring skills to transfer this knowledge is a key to furthe-ring the competencies of the participants regardless of whether or not they will pursue an academic carrier after they have completed their doctoral dissertation.

In this course, the idea of a ‘business model’ is used as a starting point. A ‘business model’ is central to any firm because it is used to pre-structure many activities of a firm. Therefore, topics like the strategy of a firm, the ways in which a decision maker in a firm decides and the way the firm accounts are often informed by a busi-ness model. Thus, the topic ‘business model’ sets the stage for this course because it signifies how the key areas of business administ-ration relate to each other.

The course uses interactive case study discussions, poster sessions, role plays and video analysis. These more interactive elements com-plement lectures given by the trainer.

Mit DRS Pro Business und DRS Pro Gründung gibt es seit 2014 zwei neue Pro-gramme, die auf Berufsfelder jenseits der Wissenschaft vorbereiten. Beide Formate sind in enger Kooperation mit profund, der Gründungsförderung der Freien Universität, und dem Fachbereich Wirtschaftswissenschaft entstanden.

DRS PRo buSiNeSS

DRS Pro Business verbindet die Vermittlung von betriebswirt-schaftlichen Grundlagen mit Angeboten zur individuellen Potenzi-alanalyse und bereitet dadurch auf den Berufseinstieg in der priva-ten Wirtschaft oder im öffentlichen Sektor vor.

Bestandteile des Programms sind u.a. die Erstellung eines Kompe-tenzprofils, ein Planspiel zur Simulation typischer Unternehmens-situationen und eine Einführung in die Betriebswirtschaftslehre.

Vertiefende Veranstaltungen aus dem Bereich Career Development der DRS und aus dem Kursprogramm der Kooperationspartner können die TeilnehmerInnen nach individuellem Bedarf wählen.

DRS Pro Gründung bereitet die TeilnehmerInnen gezielt auf eine Unternehmensgründung vor. Angefangen mit der Ideenfindung über die begleitete Entwicklung ihres Geschäftsmodells und der passenden Marktanalyse, erarbeiten die TeilnehmerInnen ein Konzept zur Finanzierung ihrer Unternehmensgründung. Ihr Ge-schäftsmodell stellen sie abschließend den anderen TeilnehmerIn-nen und externen ExpertInnen vor. Die dabei erlernten Methoden, wie z.B. Design Thinking oder der Business Model Canvas, können nicht nur auf eine Unternehmensgründung angewendet werden, sondern sind auch für andere wirtschaftliche Zusammenhänge re-levant.

Hannes Berger

Hannes Berger supports the Research Funding Support Service at Freie Universität

Berlin and provides advising on proposals for the Departments of Education and

Psychology, Philosophy and Humanities as well as the Einstein Foundation Berlin.

After graduating with a degree in history and political science from Albert-Ludwigs-

Universität Freiburg, he worked as a research associate for the Vice-Rectorate for

Research and Early Career at the University of Basel.

Diane Brüggemann

Diane Brüggemann is a consultant for start-ups. She offers consulting with a main

focus on business model and business plan development, process optimization,

and fundraising. Additionally, she conducts team-building and leadership trainings

as a senior trainer for the MALAMUT Team Catalyst GmbH. She completed a psy-

chologically oriented study program and an MBA and has many years of professio-

nal experience in the non-profit sector and in the start-up scene.

Dr. Andrea Adams

Andrea Adams is a trainer and coach for Academic Writing and Career Develop-

Petra Eggensperger

Petra Eggensperger is responsible for the educational staff development pro-

gram of the Baden-Wuerttemberg Center for Teaching and Learning at Universities.

Previously, she served for five years as director of the German Children’s and

theology and classical archaeology in Germany and England and completed further

education in theme-centred interaction and person-centred counselling.

Dr Matteo Garavoglia

Matteo Garavoglia is a research associate at the Centre for International Studies

of the Politics Department of the University of Oxford. He was educated at the

Universities of London, Paris, and Berlin, has lived in ten countries worldwide and

speaks English, French, Italian, Spanish and some German. He offers workshops in

disputation training, academic presentations, rhetorical techniques and intercul-

Dr. Christine Issa is a Geographer, commercial educated, a certified Mastercoach

a project controller, led international and interdisciplinary research projects in the

international academic cooperation and conducted training for Scientists in Afgha-

Ellen Winter and Robert Kötter founded zweirat-consulting nine years ago. They

Ulrike Lange is a trainer and counsellor for academic writing and a member of

the team at the Writing Centre of Ruhr-Universität Bochum. In her workshops she

Dr Philipp Mayer

in forest science at Technische Universität München.

Dr James Murphy

James Murphy has taught academic English as a freelance teacher-trainer at vari-

Britta Micheel

Dr Claudia Niggebrügge

Claudia Niggebrügge supports the Research Funding Support Service at Freie

Andrew Wilkins

Andrew Wilkins is a trainer for good scientific practice and scientific writing in the

Natural and Life Sciences. He had 17 years experience as an experimental scientist

in four different labs and was editor of a scientific journal for 19 years, in which he

discussed scientific work and its problems with literally thousands of scientists.

Ellen Winter

Ellen Winter and Robert Kötter founded zweirat-consulting nine years ago. They

focus on communication, creativity and mental strengths. As certified coaches

and experienced trainers, they have been working with CEOs, universities and

organisations. They are renown for fun and effective workshops. Living in the west

of Germany, they both enjoy coming to FU Berlin a lot.
