July 2020 Cancer Coalition Newsletter The SD Cancer Coalition Fall Meeting will be held virtually in 2020. More information coming soon! SD Cancer Coalition Task Force Selection The SD Cancer Coalition Steering Committee has conducted their annual priority setting process to narrow the SD Cancer Plan priorities for selection and implementation as task forces for 2020- 2021. Given the multiple impacts COVID-19 has had on cancer prevention and control, the committee determined that each task force selected will focus at least one of their priority activities on addressing these impacts. The HPV Vaccination Task Force and Early Detection Health Equity Task Force have both requested to continue efforts for another year. Through the state plan revision process and member evaluation, integration of funded implementation grantees with coalition efforts was identified as an opportunity for improvement. Given these findings, this was recommended as a collaborative priority task force. The implementation period will begin in October of 2020 and run through September of 2021. Task Forces Proposed for 2020-2021 Implementation: HPV Vaccination Early Detection Health Equity (increasing age-appropriate screening for breast, cervical, colorectal, and lung cancer) Integrating Funded Implementation Grantees with Coalition Efforts Member Spotlight Southest South Dakota Area Health Education Center (SESD AHEC), formerly Yankton Area AHEC, works to enhance access to quality healthcare, particularly primary and preventive care, by improving the supply and distribution of healthcare professionals through community/academic partnerships. SESD AHEC collaborates with a network of community, state, and regional healthcare and academic partners who are committed to meeting the healthcare workforce needs of SD. Current priorities include increasing rural healthcare workforce, disaster preparedness, HPV education, telehealth, mental health, and opioid and substance use/abuse disorders. The SESD AHEC has active representation on the HPV Vaccination Task Force, and is currently contributing to this priority of the State Plan outside of coalition efforts as well. SESD AHEC continues to work to increase HPV educational opportunities for both healthcare professionals and health profession students. SESD AHEC encourages all healthcare professionals to strongly recommend the HPV vaccine for both boys and girls ages 11-12 and works to educate

2017 SD Cancer Data Now AvailableThe South Dakota Cancer Registry is pleased to announce therelease of the Annual Report on Cancer Incidence and MortalityAmong South Dakotans, Cancer in South Dakota 2017. Alimited number of hard copies are available upon request. Thisreport summarizes the burden of cancer in SD and includescancer incidence and mortality data. The data will enable themany organizations working with cancer prevention and controlto identify public health problems, target goals for cancercontrol, and to inform citizens and health care professionalsabout risks, early detection, and treatment.

CDC Data Visualization Tool

Overall, about two-thirds of people in the United States who are diagnosed with cancer are stillalive five years later. This is one of many statistics you can find in the updated DataVisualizations tool, an easy way to explore new U.S. Cancer Statistics data. U.S. CancerStatistics are the official federal cancer statistics, providing information on the entire U.S.Population. These data can be used to find out what groups are affected most by cancer,measure progress in prevention efforts, and target actions to help improve cancer outcomes forall. They combine cancer registry data from CDC's National Program of Cancer Registries(NPCR) and the National Cancer Institute's Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER)Program.

The Data Visualizations tool is an easy way to explore the data through interactivegraphics and descriptive text. It includes incidence, mortality, survival, prevalence data andmore.The public use database for researchers includes cancer incidence data for all 50 states,the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. This year, a rural-urban county variable hasbeen added. It includes more than 28 million cases diagnosed during 17 years (2001-2017).

Task Forces UpdatesIncrease HPV Vaccination Rates (Priority 6): Chaired by Sarah QuailThe HPV Vaccination Task Force placed an educational infographic in the SD Dental AssociationNewsletter, focused on key points to discuss with patients regarding the link between HPV andoropharyngeal cancer. The task force is also partnering with Medicaid to send client reminders toeligible members.

Early Detection Health Equity (Priorities 7, 9, 10): Chaired by Jill IrelandEarly Detection Health Equity Task Force is identifying resources for early age onset colorectalcancer, assessing lung cancer screening capacity in South Dakota and working with Patricia DaRosa on Lung Cancer Screening Facility map.

Improve Palliative Care Services and Awareness for Cancer Patients (Priority 14): Chairedby Sarah MollmanThe SD Palliative Care Network Member Assessment Report is finalized. This report is based onthe responses of 32 members who completed the assessment. Thank you to those whocompleted it! This report is key as we look to enhance palliative care services across the state.

Reigniting Colorectal Cancer Screening as Communities Faceand Respond to the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Playbook

This resource provides an action-oriented playbook to be adopted throughout the COVID-19pandemic and aims to align National Colorectal Cancer Roundtable members, 80% pledgedpartners, and colorectal cancer screening advocates across the nation to work together to reignitescreening efforts appropriately, safely, and equally for all communities.
