Notes from a Doctor

Have you had a flu shot? Lots of people have and there’s good reason. Like all vaccines, this one can protect you from a pretty awful illness—the flu.

For most people, the flu causes a fever, body aches and other cold-like symptoms. A person who has the flu will sleep a lot and feel sick. But they will get better in a week. The problem with the flu is that it can make some people really sick. They may even need to go to the hospital. That’s why getting a flu shot is so important for everyone.

Who should get a flu shot?Doctors advise all people who are 6 months and older to get a flu shot. Some people have a higher risk of problems from the flu. It’s very important for them to get one. These people include:

• Pregnant women• Kids younger than age 5• People age 65 and older• People of any age who have other

health conditions

When do you get a flu shot? It’s best to get your flu shot in the fall before “flu season” begins. Flu season starts in October and usually ends in May. It is the time of year when the most people have it and you’re. most likely to get it.

Do you need to get a flu shot every year?To be protected against the flu, you need to get a new flu shot every year. Unlike some other illnesses, the flu virus keeps changing. The vaccine also needs to change each year to keep protecting you.

Is the flu shot covered by Vivida Health?Yes. Your Vivida Health plan covers flu shots at no cost to you. Check with your doctor to make sure you get the right shot at the right time to stay healthy.

For more info about flu shots or how to get one, contact your Vivida Health provider at 844-543-5131.

Who Needs a Flu Shot?“ The good news is that the seasonal flu vaccine can lower the risk of getting the flu by about half. Getting the yearly flu vaccine is the best way to protect yourself and your family from the flu.”

– Dr. Piedade Silva, M.D.

Community Connect Profile

Every day, thousands of people in Florida go to bed hungry. This is a problem the Harry Chapin Food Bank is trying to fix.

Since 1983, the Harry Chapin Food Bank has helped collect, transport and distribute food to people across Southwest Florida. All the food and grocery products are donated by local friends and business partners. Everyone is doing their part to put a stop to hunger in the community. This is the main goal of the Harry Chapin Food Bank.

Today, the Harry Chapin Food Bank leads the largest hunger-relief network in Southwest Florida, collecting and delivering about 24 million pounds of food a year. Their food donations feed around 28,000 people each week. But there is still much work to be done!

If you are in need of help or would like to donate, please contact 239-334-7007 or visit harrychapinfoodbank.org today.

The Craft Corner

Lots of great skills can come from putting young kids’ creative minds to work. After all, arts and crafts aren’t just a great way to keep the little ones busy. They also help build fine motor skills, confidence, and problem solving. Plus, they’re fun.

This spook-tacular craft is perfect for Halloween, and it couldn’t be any easier for kids of all ages to make.

1. Fold in the top of a toilet paper roll to create the bat ears. Glue or tape the fold in position, if needed.

2. Cut wings out of a piece of black craft paper, and then glue or tape them to the sides of the toilet paper roll.

3. Draw goofy or spooky faces on the rolls to bring your bat buddy to life.

Create your own Bat Buddy in 3 simple steps:
