forlorn hopes held for nursing homeAGED CARE

Members of a committee ghting to save a Melton aged-care centre from closure are disappointed and disheartened a er a meeting with Western Health.

Save Reg Geary House members and representatives of Western Health, Melton council and Djerriwarrh Health met last Wednesday to discuss the possibility of keeping the Melton South nursing home open.

Western Health has decided to close the 30-bed nursing home by June 30 next year.

Save Reg Geary committee member Dirk Sauer said the group was facing an uphill battle. “It was a two-and-a-half-hour meeting and a lot was discussed,’’ he said.

‘‘We begged them to reconsider their decision .

“[Western Health chairman] Ralph Willis was very sympathetic and said he would take it back to the board, but it doesn’t look good .’’

Mr Sauer said an extra 50 beds, at a cost of $30,000 each, would need to be added to the facility to make it viable.

“You have to buy licences from other organisations as the government doesn’t give them out easily,’’ he said.

“Most likely, if [the centre] was bought by anyone else, they would look at having to knock it down and start again to update the facilities.”

Mr Sauer said the group was considering its next move.

A petition bearing more than 600 signatures was last week presented to the state

government by Melton MP Don Nardella .In Parliament, Mr Nardella urged Health Minister David Davis to reverse Western Health’s decision.

“ e community of Melton is outraged that the lives of these residents of Reg Geary House and

their families are being upended,’’ Mr Nardella said.

“ e residents have to leave Reg Geary House, their home which they love, and have to nd another place to call home.

‘‘It’s outrageous. ere is no reason for this.” \ TM

police plead for sanity and safety in holiday trafficroad watch

Police o cers including Sergeant Michael Haschka (pictured) will be out in force during the Christmas holidays to crack down on drivers breaking laws on Melton and Moorabool roads.

Melton highway patrol’s Leading Senior Constable Allan Edwards says police are urging drivers to stick to speed limits and avoid drink-driving and fatigue .

Despite police issuing a warning earlier this month a er a series of deaths on Melton roads, it would appear not all drivers are listening.

O cers recently nabbed a man doing 120km/h in a 60 zone at Taylors Hill, while a stolen car struck a tree a er a drag race with another car on Caroline Springs Boulevard.

“We say this every Christmas,’’ Leading Senior Constable Edwards said. ‘‘We are hoping drivers listen to these warnings.’’

Extra police are out on local roads as part of Operation Summer Stay, which is being run in four phases until January 5. \

function centre a fire risk: council

LONG FOREST

e owners of a historic Long Forest property have been temporarily banned from using it as a function centre for up to 200 guests a er the CFA said it was an unacceptable re risk .

A planning application to continue running Boyd Baker House as a function and accommodation venue was refused by Moorabool council on December 4 .

e application proceeded to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal last ursday , with council’s order to cease operations approved until a full hearing on January 28 .

Boyd Baker House is set on 14.1 hectares of bushland between Bacchus Marsh and Melton. e property includes three heritage-listed buildings.

e post-war house was sold to Peter Mitrakis at auction in 2006.

Six residents spoke out against the planning permit at the council meeting, and a petition with 59 signatures was presented.

Long Forest resident Julie Lewin said that on the weekend prior to the council meeting, music from the venue was so loud it could be heard in her living room.

“All that noise shatters our peaceful weekends. It’s having a pretty big impact on neighbours and local wildlife.”

Resident Tim Feetham , who attended last week’s VCAT hearing, said there had been issues with the site’s use in recent years. “Mr Mitrakis’s solicitor argued that it’s not as great a risk as we’re saying, and questioned whether the CFA was an appropriate body to comment,” Mr Feetham said.

Cr Tonia Dudzik said the re risk was very real. “To have people drinking and smoking in the bush during a potentially dangerous re season ... it isn’t a good recipe,” she said.

Mr Mitrakis could not be reached for comment. \

council CEO challenges critical auditINFRASTRUCTURE

Melton council’s apparent inability to meet infrastructure renewal targets has again been highlighted by an auditor-general’s report.

e annual report is aimed at informing State Parliament on the nancial sustainability of Victoria’s councils.

Melton was one of two municipalities identi ed as having a high-risk “renewal gap”.

e gap refers to whether a council has been maintaining existing assets at a consistent rate.

e rate is calculated on a council’s aggregate spending on renewal, restoration and maintenance of infrastructure.

Melton was assessed as being in the high-risk category for the fourth time in ve years, indicating spending on assets had not kept pace with consumption .

Last year, Melton was rated a medium risk.In the report, Auditor-General John Doyle

said outer metropolitan councils typically spent less on infrastructure renewal .

“As predominantly growth-area councils, they have higher new infrastructure needs compared with established councils that require greater focus on maintenance and renewal,’’ he said.

Melton was assessed as a medium risk in capital replacement, indicating renewal spending was insu cient. But council chief executive Kel Tori said the formula used was skewed towards non-growth councils and should be reviewed.

“ e formula only takes into account expenditure that renews a piece of infrastructure to its pre-existing condition and does not include expenditure where it

expands or extends the capacity of an asset,’’ he said.

“For instance, the Melton library project – where the former library was demolished and replaced with a completely new library –

is not considered to be expenditure that would fall within the renewal gap

equation.“ e key issue, however, is that

in a municipality such as Melton, with a rapid rate of growth, the vast majority of our assets are relatively

new and as such require less renewal expenditure during their early years.

‘‘ e benchmarks that have been established for the industry, which are universally applied in assessing the level of risk, are not in my opinion appropriate for a growth municipality.” \

say ‘Hola’ to a new careerA Bacchus Marsh couple will turn their love of entertaining into a new career, opening up a Mexican restaurant in Bridge Road, Richmond, in the new year. Kylie and Scott Benson (pictured with Ella, 7, Jack, 13, Braith, 6, and Brooklyn, 2) won the Salsas restaurant in a radio competition. Ms Benson says their ve children are “just as chuffed as we are”. Mr Benson, a licensed aircraft maintenance engineer, will dedicate his days to running the restaurant and cooking, while Ms Benson plans on taking a step back from the family’s photobooth hire company. “Beyond our children, this is the biggest life change we’ve had,” she says. “We can’t wait to add our personality to the place and take this opportunity to entertain on a larger scale.’’ \ PM

flood warning for goat country plansBACCHUS MARSH

Plans to rezone a 167-hectare site in Bacchus Marsh for a future residential estate are open for public comment. But comment already made isn’t entirely positive.

Kataland Developments is seeking to build a 1400-house estate west of Bacchus Marsh on land formerly occupied by Underbank Stud .

e area has been identi ed in the Moorabool planning scheme as “potential residential” since 2009.

In a proposal seen by the Weekly earlier this year, the company said the estate would “comprise a balanced use of land with a sensitive mix of residential, commercial, community and green space”.

Several residents have already voiced their objections, saying the area is a ood zone.

Bacchus Marsh’s Lisa Mitchell said her

family used to own a dairy on the land.“It oods very easily down there – we

copped a hell of a lot of rain between 1995 and 2000 and there were times where you couldn’t get out unless you were in a four-wheel drive,” she said.

Ms Mitchell said she was disappointed that the old farm, believed to have been used by Phar Lap and his owner, could be overrun by housing lots.

“ ey have a 70-year-old eucalyptus tree there; they’re just going to knock down years of history,” she said.

Former mayor Pat Gri n said his main concern was the land’s steepness.

“It is goat country,” he said. “It would be a di cult development and on too big of an area. Where the river ats are, it’s a ood plain.” Council chief executive Rob Croxford

said an extended consultation period had been set so the council could gauge public opinion. “We want the result to be the best outcome for growth and tra c in Bacchus

Marsh,” he said. John Summers, 81, who lived and

raced horses at Underbank for about 12 years, said that while he had a “so spot” for the area, he understood the desire for development.

“As long as they’re above the ood line they’ll be OK,’’ he said. ‘‘I just hope

it’s the right thing for everyone in the area.”Submissions will be considered by the

council a er a planning panel hearing . e closing date for submissions is January 24 . \

boys’ cool cart a vehicle for generosityMELTON

For most children, the thought of giving away a billy cart they have only just made wouldn’t cross their minds.

But that’s exactly what St Dominics Primary School pupils Brodie, Peter and Deng have done – bringing joy to less-fortunate children in the process.

e grade 5 and 6 boys made the cart as part of a school program designed to improve reading and literacy. e process included watching videos and reading instruction manuals on how to put the billy cart together. Peter says the trio decided to ra e the cart at school, with the $160 used to buy presents to put under Kmart Melton’s wishing tree.

“We decided to have a lolly jar and got everyone [at the school] to pay to make guesses on how many lollies were in the jar,” he said. “Whoever was the closest got the billy cart and the second-closest got the lollies.” \

Brodie, 18, died in June a er paramedics took 27 minutes to reach him a er he su ered an asthma attack. e nearest available crew was in Sunbury.

Matthew, 23, waited 16 minutes a er having a cardiac arrest at a Melton recreation centre on October 8.

“ e stress of being part of a service that is losing the race to improve response times must be immense,” Ms Wilson told

hundreds of paramedics. “As a mother who has been directly impacted by these response times, I am here to tell each and every one of you that I support and respect you.

“ e rst step in providing Victorians with a reliable and functional ambulance service is to pay you, the workers,

correctly.”Mr Gibbs said paramedics deserved more support.

“I was at the scene and watched as ve professional paramedics worked tirelessly on my son,” Mr Gibbs said. ‘‘ eir commitment

is something I will never forget. I have directly witnessed the

conditions you work under, the stress you are exposed to on a daily basis and the lack of internal support for your service.”

As reported by the Weekly, there have been three cases since October last year in which Melton patients waited longer than 15 minutes for an ambulance.

Ambulance Victoria has said additional resources have been allocated to Caroline Springs and more resources will be added to Melton by April next year. \

MELTON’S PLAN MELBOURNE WISHLIST■ Electri cation of the Melton line■ New train stations at Toolern and Caroline Springs■ Rail links to Melbourne and Avalon airports■ Improved public transport

Bring jobs here: leadwest

Plan Melbourne concentrates too much on central Melbourne and not enough on opportunities in other regions such as Melbourne’s west, LeadWest chief executive Craig Rowley says.

In its submission on the plan, LeadWest compared how Plan Melbourne tted in with its own Western Agenda strategic action plan. That plan looks at uniting local leaders and working together to create a prosperous, sustainable, healthy and fair region.

“[Plan Melbourne’s] focus in Melbourne’s west is more about people and doesn’t focus on the workforce-to-job ratio,” Mr Rowley said. “You’d solve a whole lot of transport issues if residents didn’t have to travel to get to work.”

Mr Rowley said LeadWest welcomed the proposed development of Werribee and Sunshine as employment clusters and urged the state government to ensure open communication, citing the importance of relationships with regional cities.

He said present zoning regulations would make it hard for councils to attain the government’s goal of “20-minute” neighbourhoods, where residents can get to where they need to go within that time- frame. \ TM

PLANNING

e electri cation of the train line between Melton and Melbourne should be included in future transport plans, according to two regional lobby groups.

e Western Transport Alliance and LeadWest made the call in a joint submission to the state government’s Plan Melbourne growth strategy. Released in October, the plan is designed to be a planning and transport blueprint that will shape how Melburnians work and live for the next 40 years.

Both the alliance and LeadWest are made up of members of local councils in Melbourne’s west, including Melton.

In the submission, the alliance said the electri cation of the Melton rail line was more important than the Doncaster project.

“Given the occurring growth in the outer west, and in particular the Melton municipality, the region believes the Melton rail line upgrade should be a higher priority than a Doncaster rail line given the excellent bus service already serving that area, a luxury not currently available to the Melton area,” the report stated.

LeadWest chief executive Craig Rowley said rail upgrades would make it easier for people to commute to work and would link Melton

with regional areas of signi cance. “[ e train line] has to be electri ed and have stations at Toolern and Caroline Springs to allow for residents to commute to Melton for work,’’ he said.

“ e transport corridor from Melbourne to Ballarat needs to see the rail line duplicated to connect Bacchus Marsh to the [proposed] neighbourhood activity centre in Melton.

“It also makes it easier for residents from Bacchus Marsh to reach the employment clusters in Sunshine and Werribee.”

In its submission, the alliance said Plan Melbourne was a well-researched, broad-based strategy, but there were many questions le unanswered as to how the vision would be delivered. \

Yarraville is an unlikely starting point for a story about the world’s rarest zebra.

But it’s the natural habitat of Brooke Squires, one of the architects of a remarkable program that helps an impoverished tribal people and a highly endangered

species. The program is a home-grown conservation effort that owes

its success to the people of Melbourne, and it is now being adopted by zoos around the world.

Thanks to the Beads for Wildlife program, initiated at Werribee Open Range Zoo, hundreds of Kenyan women and their families are enjoying a better quality of life, and the numbers of Grevy’s zebras are slowly on the rise.

Squires admits that when she was introduced to the Rendille and Samburu tribal people of North Kenya in 2009, she had no idea where it would lead.

She was working as a rhino keeper at Werribee Zoo when its partnership with the Northern Rangelands Trust – which administers community conservancies across Kenya – was forged. The goal was to develop a program that would help communities financially and at the same time change attitudes towards endangered native wildlife.

At the top of this list was the critically endangered Grevy’s, or Imperial, zebra – the largest, least social of the three species of zebra, with bigger ears and narrower stripes. It is specially adapted to semi-arid grasslands.

But how to achieve such ambitious conservation aims?“We know that to save wildlife in the field, you can’t just tell

people to stop hunting them, exploiting them, driving them off their tribal land, because they do these things for a reason and it is usually based on survival,” says Squires, who now works full-time in international conservation for Zoos Victoria.

“What you need to do is provide people with other income

streams that are sustainable to allow them to move away from practices that are harming wildlife and natural resources.”

That’s how the most improbable environmental champion – the plastic bead – became the seed of a scheme that has turned around many lives.

“Beadwork is a massive part of these people’s culture,” Squires says. “Women tell the stories about their life, clan, number of children through their beadwork.

“The principle was to take something that was culturally appropriate that the women do every day and turn it into a product for the western market.”

When Beads for Wildlife started four years ago, there were 40 Kenyan women in the program. Now there are more than 900 women supporting their families through traditional handicraft sold through Zoos Victoria. The women made between 50 and 75 per cent profit on each of the more than 104,000 beadwork items sold to date.

Some of the women are earning up to $400 a month – four times Kenya’s average monthly wage.

Having an alternative income stream has not only helped families get through the drought but also reduced livestock pressure on the land.

“While they were having herds that were too big for the landscape to sustain, eating every single blade of grass, the Grevy’s zebra didn’t stand a chance,” Squires says.

“But when you have fewer cattle, goats and sheep, it’s a whole different story and we are seeing a difference in the grazing systems with the Northern Rangelands Trust reporting a 40 per cent reduction in livestock between 2011 and 2012.

“Because the community members recognise the income they earn from beads – which is quite substantial – is because of the wildlife, they are becoming more tolerant and helpful

and are starting to leave water in the top of wells for the zebras.” The extra income has provided security for families eking out an existence on the harsh, dry rangeland.

“These are nomadic pastoralists. Men are away with livestock for most of the year,” Squires says. “They don’t leave money or a cow or anything like that – the families are virtually left to fend for themselves. In tough times they will usually lose two or three members of their extended family.

“Now the women have the income to keep food on the table, to buy medical supplies to combat malaria, which kills so many people, to keep their kids at school and keep clothes on their back.”

Taking the pressure off households has reduced conflict and violence but also given the women a sense of

pride in themselves. “For so long they were just on a hamster wheel: ‘This is my life, I have no expectations beyond this: I am going to birth these children and I am going to live as long as I can, then I am going to die.’

“It has been remarkable to see the change in these women. They have pride and confidence because they

have seen where their lives can go.“One woman, Josephine, took her business beyond beads

by opening her own little shop in her hut selling sugar, tea and some staples. She can now afford to send her kids to secondary school and that is massive because so few of these kids ever get to secondary school.”

It’s all down to families in Melbourne. “The truth is, the theory of relieving pressure on native habitat by providing alternative forms of income for Kenyan tribes people would not work without the practical support of the people of Melbourne,” Squires says. “They have been so generous.” \

The case was heard as a contest mention at Bacchus Marsh Magistrates Court on December 6 and was set down for a two-day hearing by magistrate John Lesser. The girl is still recovering after her jaw was broken and teeth were knocked out during the June 22 attack. She has undergone reconstructive microsurgery and plastic surgery after suffering extensive facial injuries. She had 300 stitches inserted. After a two-month investigation, Moorabool council

‘festive’ holly nothing but a pest The holly plant and its bright red berries may look festive, but environment groups say it should be cut down and poisoned to stop it from spreading. Forestcare spokeswoman Gayle Osborne said Wombat State Forest had recently been invaded by English holly plants and several other weeds. She said the problem started in people’s gardens. “ The red berries contain seeds and they’re spread by birds,” she said. “People need to understand their favourite garden plants may be causing environmental problems. Weed infestations severely threaten the ability of our native ora and fauna to survive. They overtake native vegetation and can push native ora species to extinction.” \

‘merit’ in joining forumpublic transport

Melton council is likely to seek membership of the Metropolitan Transport Forum.

As reported by the Weekly, the council met with forum representatives last month to discuss joining the local government transport group, which seeks to secure e ective, e cient and equitable transport across metropolitan Melbourne.

All other councils in Melbourne’s west are members of the forum.

Councillors will vote on the matter at tonight’s Melton council meeting.

An o cer’s report stated there was merit in council joining the forum and collaborating with other councils and the transport sector generally to promote “improved transport for Melbourne as a whole”.

e council will also vote on the proposed relocation of the Vietnam Veterans Association’s Melton sub-branch to Mac’s Cottage at Willows Historical Park. e association needs to move because of the expansion of the council’s McKenzie Street community care and inclusion aged centre .

e association planned to move to Blackwood Drive Reserve, but the council was informed in August that this shi couldn’t go ahead due to “unforeseen nancial circumstances”. A report stated the proposed use of the cottage by the association made sense as it was located next to the Melton Men’s Shed, which o ers men’s health programs.

e council is also being advised to approve $22,000 for a gravel

car park next to Exford Primary School. e school’s car park has 50 spaces and hasn’t been able to

cope with the huge increase of students at the school.

A report to councillors stated: “In the circumstances, this would seem a reasonable request, particularly given the remote, rural nature of the school whereby students and parents are unable to access the school by means other than by car.” \

A young Bacchus Marsh adventurer is attempting the rst full ascent of the Murray River.

Chris Hayward will kayak more than 2500 kilometres, hike 236 kilometres and climb to Mount Kosciuszko’s summit as part of a journey he started this month and won’t complete until June next year.

e 19-year-old trail blazer has already trekked a vastly di erent path compared to others his age, most of whom will spend the coming year studying, working, and if they’re lucky, tting in some travelling.

“From my friends, there’s been a mixture of encouragement, doubt and thinking I’m absolutely insane,” Hayward says. “But I’m thrilled to have the chance to do it. I’ve been enthusiastic about the outdoors most of my life and I’m all for challenging myself.”

Hayward’s latest adventure will retrace the steps of Captain Charles Sturt, who discovered the Murray River 183 years ago.

He will begin his river odyssey in the Southern Ocean, where the mouth of the Murray River lies.

Last year, Hayward became the youngest person to kayak solo down the Murray River from source to sea, which he describes as indirect training for his full ascent. He hopes his trek will raise environmental awareness and highlight the impact humans can have on the environment.

Hayward is raising funds for environmental charity Green eet, which encourages people to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions.

“ is is important as an adventurer, because without preserving the environment we live in, we’ll have nothing for us to explore in future.”

Hayward says his parents are as “supportive as they can be” while still hoping he will chose to do something

more ‘‘safe and normal’’ later in life. “ I think they’ve realised from last year I have the commonsense and ability to look a er myself.”

Hayward, who is trained in survival and rst-aid, says he’s prepared for any emergencies.

“I’ve got a grab bag on the kayak which contains shelter, warmth, re-starting means, hunting and shing tools, rst aid kit and medicines.’’

One of the biggest challenges he’ll face on his journey

is loneliness. “On days where its windy and you can’t get out on the river and you’re not progressing, it can hit you. It’s like ‘crap, what am I doing here?’

“But you do get used to constantly being on your own, and you get a lot of thinking time to learn about yourself and your limits.” \

of multiple traditions for Italian, Indian, Filipino, Sri Lankan, Spanish, Vietnamese and Slovenian Catholics.

e event is of particular importance to Victoria’s Maltese community, with shrines hoisted on shoulders in a procession that reminds many of their homeland.

Four generations of the Baldacchino family attend the service, from

children through to patriarch Salvu Baldacchino , 75.

Salvu’s son, Gino, said the local celebration was a passionate reminder of Easter observances in

the family’s ancestral village.‘’We used to carry this in our own

village,’’ he said. ‘‘ ere’s a 30-year wait to carry the statues; it’s passed down from generation to generation.’’

e council grants included $3000 for e Longest Lunch, staged by Djerriwarrh Health Services, and Yendon History Group’s World War I memorial restoration project. Gordon’s Back in Time festival received $1000 and a fun run hosted by St Brendans Primary School’s parents and friends association received $5000.

Moorabool council did not respond before the Weekly went to print. \

Christmas is a special time to spend with family and friends.

It’s also important to reach out to those in our community who are in need. I encourage residents to get involved in Council’s Christmas donation project. You can place non-perishable food and toys under Council’s Christmas tree, located at the Visitor Information Centre, and we’ll pass the items on to those who are in need in Melton.

Christmas time also means there are lots of

drivers on the roads, driving on roads they don’t travel very often, so please take extra care on the roads during this busy time.

On another note, I have had many residents ask me what is happening with the roadworks at the intersection of Coburns Road and Barries Road. I would like to thank all our drivers for the patience they have shown at this junction during the construction period. While this is not a Council project I would like to give residents a brief update on the works. These works are being undertaken by the developer of Woodgrove Shopping Centre, QIC as part of the shopping centre’s expansion. Works have been delayed due to issues regarding the relocation of telecommunications infrastructure. Council has been advised by QIC that interim arrangements will be put in place later

I hope you all have a very Merry Christmas and a safe and prosperous New Year. I look forward to the challenges we will face in 2014 and look forward to leading our great City.

I am available to meet with residents most Saturday mornings from 9am, by appointment. Please contact Barb McKenzie on 9747 7200 to book a time, or contact me directly on 0412 584 224 or via email at [email protected]

Ever wondered why sake is drunk from small porcelain cups, known as an ockoko?

“Small glasses are based on social reasons but people do drink from larger vessels at home,” says Leigh Hudson. “If you’re drinking with colleagues, you pour for the other people and never ll your own – it’s very rude if you do.

“The small glasses allow you to nish your drink quickly. At the

end of the night everyone will have poured for each other.”

Sake is not aromatic like wine, so serving it in a glass with a large bowl does not improve its enjoyment. A smaller vessel, known as a tokkuri, is used to pour sake at the table. Tokkuri come in portion sizes, starting with a measure for two people. Porcelain tokkuri help the sake to be warmed and sit in hot water to stay warm. \

Does your family have a Christmas wine tradition? For us there’s always sparkling shiraz at the table and Rutherglen muscat poured with the pudding.

is year, I’m going to change the pace a little and serve sake with one or two of the Christmas Day courses. Sake is a great option with food, complementing and highlighting elements rather than competing with them as some wines can.

“When you drink sake you should eat. In Japan, you’ll order food and sake – every round of drinks has a little nibble with it,” says Melbourne-based sake importer and sommelier Leigh Hudson.

Just like wine, di erent sake styles are suited to di erent dishes, from oysters and salmon to charcuterie and even steak – pretty much anything you might nd on the Christmas table.

Try karakuchi with oysters, oni koroshi with cured meats, and nama with prawns on Christmas Day.

While there are di erent styles and a host of brewers with names that are hard to remember, let alone spell, sake’s actually a really approachable drink.

“Sake is where beer and wine meet – in avour and how they are made,” says Hudson. “I think beer drinkers can nd something familiar with sake and wine drinkers will nd something very familiar, too.”

ere are common characters that wine and beer lovers will appreciate, from the citrus and minerality of a riesling and stone fruits of chardonnay to the tropical aromas and caramel avours of a beer.

“Sake’s made from rice that’s speci cally grown for sake; it tends to be a bigger grain with a starchy centre. ere are many breeds and some are better than others: just like grapes, price is a good indicator for quality.”

Sake producers mill the rice grains down to take the

DECANTER \ BEN THOMAS IS TURNING JAPANESE

husks o , before milling them down further to get to the starch and remove proteins on the outer grain, which add impurities to the nished sake. It ends up being a rather expensive process.

ere’s a strict classi cation system regarding how far the grains are milled down – or polished – too. When 50 per cent or less is polished o , it’s called daiginjo; up to 60 per cent is ginjo and between 60-70 per cent is classed as honjozo. e more the grain is milled, the more expensive the sake is.

A er it’s polished, the rice is steamed and inoculated with koji, a mould that converts starch to sugar. Water and yeast is added and fermentation takes place in an open fermenter. As the process progresses, more steamed rice and yeast is added to trigger a parallel fermentation, in which the yeasts feed on the sugars as they are converted by the koji.

e mixture is pressed, just like fermented grapes, then the extracted juice pasturised and le to settle in tanks for a few months before being bottled. Some sake is forti ed with alcohol, others are broken down with water or le unadulterated.

Sake is at its best up to a year a er bottling and will last a week in the fridge a er being opened. \

One of the many nice things about this weatherboard and brick combo, apart from its good looks, is the clever incorporation of the gabled roof line into

interior spaces. This factor alone gives the house a classy finish but details such as box bay windows, stepped skirting boards, wall niches, lovely floorboards, porcelain floor tiles, white plantation shutters and soft-grey colour palette also contribute.

On a corner block (in a service lane) at the northern end of Bulmans Road, the house has

kerbside appeal in spades. Behind a picket fence with capped posts, the front path is flanked by small lawns and pebbled gardens planted with lavender, seaside daisies and standard bushes – which perfectly complement the facade.

Beyond a leadlight front door, the boarded hallway has an open, carpeted lounge room/adult retreat to the left. Double doors opposite open to the main bedroom with a good-sized en suite with dual basins in an L-shaped vanity; an enclosed toilet and a walk-in wardrobe border the bathroom area.

The living hub, under a vaulted ceiling, is a wonderful light-filled space, sensibly allocated lots of room for family downtime. A gas log fire makes things cosy and the kitchen is an appealing workspace. Caesarstone benchtops, 2pac cabinetry with soft-closing drawers, a four-door pantry and D’Amani dishwasher, canopy rangehood, 900mm gas cooktop and underbench oven are salient features.

Three bedrooms, each with mirrored wardrobes, are down a hallway, as is a separate toilet, laundry with storage, and a sparkling main bathroom.

The integrated deck outside the family room is a cracker. With a lined ceiling rising into end dormers, each with a small window, and TV and mains gas connection, it also extends beyond the roofline to allow a spot to soak up the sunshine. Pittosporums screen the fence and a ground-level rock water feature peacefully bubbles away.

A side gate allows trailer access to the backyard; the opposite side yard has a pergola, utility area and vegie box. A four-car garage has workshop space, and hot and cold plumbing. \

Corolla rolls onThe Toyota Corolla is sitting in poll position on this year’s list of Australia’s best selling cars, and its 35,900 total national sales to date make it the most popular car.Looking at the 2013 list, which includes the similarly compact Mazda 3 reeling in 3613 yearly sales, it’s safe to say consumer preferences have gradually shifted toward favouring smaller cars that zip around urban terrain in a stylish and economical fashion. But why is the Corolla consistently winning over buyers and who’s buying them?Salesperson Grant Salisbury from Melton Toyota says the Corolla’s popularity can be attributed to its appeal to a wide demographic. “Its economical, sporty, and European in style which are the main reasons this car is popular with all generations of buyers,” explains Salisbury. “And the fact they’re made in Japan inevitably creates consumer confi dence in the product and supports its reputation for longevity.”It seems as though part of the Corolla’s success is that Toyota has taken a proven winner and made it as commercially appealing as possible. The Corolla line now includes a fi ve-door hatch, a four-door sedan, plus Ascent, Ascent Sport, Conquest, Levin SX, Levin ZR and Ultima models.

The hatch model takes what was working with the original Corolla and goes the extra mile in terms of added creature comforts of redesigned seats, console and display units and the panoramic sun-roof. Its modern makeover is characterised by slim headlights, bold grille design and funky colours. Optional features include satellite navigation systems, reversing cameras and rear sensors for parking assistance. And when it comes to safety, the Corolla has all bases covered, being awarded the maximum 5-star Safety rating by ANCAP.

twenty20 triple treat for bullsTWENTY20

Bacchus Marsh is celebrating back-to-back Gisborne and District Cricket Association Twenty20 premier division titles a er a comprehensive 57-run win against Sunbury at Clarke Oval last Tuesday night.

It was even more one-sided down the road at Eric Boardman Memorial Reserve as Ash eld captured the district division title with a nine-wicket win against Rupertswood.

Bacchus Marsh made 5-135 against Sunbury and faced few scares defending the total as the home team was out for just 87 in reply.

e victory gives Bacchus Marsh a record third Twenty20 title as well as being the rst team to go back-to-back.

e Bulls made a conservative start, 1-22 o the rst ve overs before Ian Spiteri (43) and Tom McColl (34) sparked an acceleration with 10 runs o the sixth over.

When Spiteri went at 2-69 the Bulls were going at better than a run a ball, but McColl missed out on the chance at a 50 as he was stumped in the 16th over running down the wicket at Brad Hunter (2-20).

Dylan Wright wowed the crowd with the shot of the game, responding to three straight yorkers from Jason McGann by pulling out the ramp shot for four in the nal over.

Sunbury made a shaky start to its chase

when Michael Treweek was caught at mid-wicket in the rst over, then Patrick Tyler was run out in the decisive moment of the match in the second.

Having hit a full toss to long o , Tyler waited too long before committing to a second run, beaten to the keeper’s end by a

throw from the deep by McColl.Bacchus Marsh took great heart

from the dismissal, and the impressive elding performance continued as Brad Croxford held a catch on the deep mid-wicket boundary to dismiss Jacob Brewer.

Opener Stephen Treweek played a lone hand as partners came and went,

with Heath Bo ey bowled leg stump walking across the crease by Rhys Watson.

McGann then came and went for just two as Watson held a sharp chance at mid wicket o Spiteri’s bowling.

Another catch in the deep le Sunbury 6-47 at half way, with Treweek’s resistance nally ending for 27 in the 12th over as he was caught at mid-on.

A leg-side stumping ended the match in the 17th over, with Spiteri (4-31), Croxford (3-13) and Watson (2-13) the multiple wicket-takers for Bacchus Marsh.

At Boardman reserve, Rupertswood’s Jay King (20) and Haydn Ross (12) were the only batsmen to make double gures as Rupo was knocked over for 68 in the 18th over.

Ash eld lost one wicket early but powered

to victory therea er, with Ryan Pretty (27no) and Matthew Bulluss (34) getting the chase to 1-72 by the 14th over.

Pretty (3-12) was best of the Ash eld

bowlers while King (2-17), Bulluss (2-13) and Branden Paul (2-9) all took multiple wickets. \

BALLARAT FLThe Cameron Richardson era at Bacchus Marsh will start with the Cobras matched against North Ballarat City in a tough opening to next year’s Ballarat Football League season. A draft xture was released last week, with Eastern Bloc featuring prominently in night games and Sunday blockbusters. The Cobras face tough early trials under new coach Richardson, coming off a rst round bye with a Good Friday blockbuster against North Ballarat City at Eureka Stadium, followed by an Anzac Day clash in a derby against Darley at Darley Park. Darley also has a blockbuster start to the year, a Sunday feature match against Sunbury on April 13 at Clarke Oval before the town derby against the Cobras. New coaches Brad Murphy (Melton) and Phil Carmen (Sebastopol) will clash in round one (April 12) at MacPherson Park, while Melton South opens the season away at Ballarat before its rst home game, a Saturday night clash with Sunbury at Melton Recreation Reserve (April 26). Finals start on the weekend of August 30-31, leading up to the grand nal at Eastern Oval on Saturday, September 20. The under-18 interleague match against Riddell District league will be on Wednesday, May 14, at Eastern Oval in Ballarat, while country championships interleague will be on Saturday, May 24, away to Goulburn Valley. \

VSCDAMelton will need to make the biggest score of the season on Lakeside Drive Reserve’s normally bowler-friendly wicket if it wants to beat Roxburgh Park-Broadmeadows this weekend. The Falcons made 221 batting rst on Saturday. Syed Hussain and Patrick Matautaava were both dismissed for 50 as ve RPB batsmen got starts but couldn’t go on to big innings. Paul Halfhide (3-24) was best of the Melton bowlers . \

WDCALate wickets have offered hope to Melton Centrals as they defend 134 against Bellbridge this weekend in A-Turf. Centrals were all out by the 53rd over but bounced back to have Bellbridge 3-29 at stumps. Division rival Melton South is in need of a miracle to take the points. It was all out 98 with Grand United already 1-63 in reply. \

WSUCCAEynesbury is within touching distance of rst-innings points after a brisk chase of Maidstone’s 157 in AE Lowe Shield on Saturday. The Eagles were 2-131 at stumps. Division rival Rockbank faces a tough chase after Altona Sports made 265. \

BALLARAT CAA Matt Cape century has put Darley in a position to pull off an upset as ninth threatens to roll second-placed Brown Hill in rst grade. Cape’s 103 held the Darley innings together – particularly a 103-run stand for the sixth wicket with Clint Salisbury (33no) as Darley made 7-229 . \

A clear divide has opened between the contenders and also-rans of McIntyre Cup a er Sunbury United’s outright win on Saturday blew out the margin between fourth and h.

St Anthony’s was no match for United and fell to an innings defeat a er starting the day 150 runs behind on rst innings.

e 10 points for United (fourth, 28) means it is now 10 clear of h-placed Wallan and sixth-placed Woodend (both 18).

Woodend fought hard in its second innings to stave o outright defeat against Sunbury. Sunbury’s lead at the top of the ladder is now only four points, on 46, from Riddell on 42, with Bacchus Marsh third on 30.

Having been skittled for 43 in the rst innings, St Anthony’s fought for 49 overs in its second dig, but only Michael Yates (28) could make it past 20.
